Call for Papers “Experimenting Philosophy of Religion: Altering Politics, Ecology and Aesthetics in Transition”: 21 - 23 October 2026 at the University of Vienna

Dear colleagues, we are pleased to invite submissions for the conference “Experimenting Philosophy of Religion: Altering Politics, Ecology and Aesthetics in Transition”, which will take place from 21–23 October 2026 at the University of Vienna. The conference explores “experimenting philosophy of religion” as a field, method, and performative mode of exchange. It aims to engage with pressing contemporary challenges—particularly in politics, ecology, and aesthetics—by fostering exploratory, unconventional, and interdisciplinary approaches. While the focus lies on philosophy of religion, contributions from related disciplines such as sociology, political science, and cultural studies, artistic and other related disciplines are very welcome. We especially welcome contributions that work with innovative methods, address marginal questions, or challenge established disciplinary boundaries. The conference is structured around three thematic panels: * Politics & Society * Ecology & Nature * Arts & Aesthetics Early career researchers are particularly encouraged to apply. Presentations will be 20 minutes long, followed by a response and discussion. Reminder: Trans*Formations Talk Jane Russell, KC

Dear All, this is a reminder for the next Trans*Formations Event at the Philosophy Institute. For those who do not know the series: This talk and workshop series organized by a bunch of people from the Philosophy Department (BA, MA and PhD) provides insights into recent developments in trans* philosophizing. Thanks to the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy (VDP) [1] and queer@hochschulen [2] for their financial support! In the next talk, Jane Russell KC (Lawyer from London) will discuss her experiences with contemporary cases in UK law that deal with rights of trans* people. She will give insight into her practice, and reflect on anti-trans* presuppositions and British terfism that become evident in these court cases. The event will be in English! When: 15.5.2026, 16:00-17:30 Where: HS 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien) Trans* Exclusion in UK Courts A Talk by Jane Russell KC As a lawyer, Jane Russell KC has represented the interests of the British trans* community in some of the most high profile cases of the past decade: Bailey v Stonewall and Garden Court (2022), involving the co-founder of the prominent anti-trans lobbying group LGB Alliance; Forstater v CGD (2019), involving the founder of Sex Matters, and which established that "gender critical views" are protected as a 'philosophical belief' under the Equality Act 2010; recently, Peggie vs Fife Health Board and Dr. B Upton (2025), which considered whether a nurse had been subject to discrimination by virtue of being expected to share a changing room with a trans* colleague. With her legal expertise and personal insights into the fight for trans* rights inside the courtroom, Jane Russell is ideally placed to shed light on how powerful groups use the law to target trans* people, and how trans* rights can be protected by the court. We are especially happy if those join the talk who are versed in the legal situation of trans* people in Austria, so we can have a fruitful discussion on similarities, differences, and possible strategies for action. Open Call for Applications: PhD and Postdoc positions in UnAxiMa: Uncovering the Axioms of Mathematics

Open Call for Applications - PhD and Postdoc positions in UnAxiMa: Uncovering the Axioms of Mathematics The FWF Emerging Fields project UnAxiMa (Uncovering the Axioms of Mathematics) is offering up to 12 postdoc positions and up to 12 PhD positions at TU Wien and the University of Vienna, Austria. The goal of the 5-year project is to explore the axioms of mathematics taking into account aspects of mathematical logic (in particular, set theory, computability theory, and reverse mathematics), complexity theory, automated theorem proving, and philosophy. The project is jointly led by six principal investigators: Juan P. Aguilera (TU Wien), Vera Fischer (University of Vienna), Laura Kovács (TU Wien), Sandra Müller (TU Wien), Michael Pinsker (TU Wien), and Georg Schiemer (University of Vienna). UnAxiMa is looking for highly motivated and creative candidates, and in particular encourage female researchers to apply. The applicants should have a strong background in at least one of the following fields: mathematical logic, theoretical computer science, universal algebra, or philosophy of mathematics. For the PhD positions the requirements are a Master's degree or equivalent in mathematics, computer science, or philosophy. For the postdoc positions the requirements are a PhD or equivalent in mathematics, computer science, or philosophy. Successful candidates will be based at either TU Wien or University of Vienna, but will collaborate with all of the 18-30 team members intensively. Dates: Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. For full consideration, we encourage applications by May 22nd, 2026. Successful applicants will start in October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter, but not later than October 2027. The duration of the positions will be up to 4 years (for PhD positions) and 3 years (for postdoc positions), with initial contracts offered for one year, and prolongation subject to evaluation. The positions carry no teaching load; however, participation in teaching might be arranged if desired. There is sufficient funding for conference and research exchange trips. Online interviews are planned for June 15th–17th, 2026. Documents: Applicants will be required to submit: a motivation letter, CV (including list of publications, if applicable), a statement of research experience and interests (2 pages maximum). In the case of the PhD positions, a transcript of records as well as a copy of the Master's thesis should be included if available (otherwise, any other written work such as a draft or Bachelor's thesis are welcome).
