Dear All, The next talk in the "Wittgenstein=steine" series is this Friday (June 13th) at 3pm in room NIG 3D. The speaker is Konstantin Deininger, and his title is: _"On the Material and Formal Aspects of (Moral) Certainty"_. Abstract: Does morality have a binding character in the sense that chains of justification come to an end? In this talk, I will affirm this question and argue that we can plausibly distinguish between formal and material aspects of moral certainty. As a starting point, I will interpret Wittgenstein's idea of "bedrock," introduced in §217 of the Philosophical Investigations, as standing for the end of a chain of reasoning. In doing so, I align with certain Wittgensteinian interpreters who maintain that some chains of moral reasoning end with certainty. However, I will arrive at deviating conclusions by demonstrating that different kinds of moral certainties function in different ways. Wittgensteinian scholars such as Cora Diamond and Nigel Pleasants correctly identify the formal aspect of moral certainty, showing that some propositions resist justification and doubt. However, the candidates for formal certainties they propose do not fully satisfy the criteria of certainty. This, I argue, is due to their failure to adequately distinguish between the formal and material aspects of certainty. Material certainties, such as Diamond's "slavery is unjust and insupportable" or Pleasants' "killing is wrong," remain intelligible to some extent and are thus subject to justification and doubt. Still, these propositions function as regress stoppers by putting an end to the chain of reasoning--but they do not mark the boundary of the unintelligible as formal certainties do. Drawing on Wittgenstein's later writings, I will argue that only formal certainties--which I refer to as transcendental certainties--are entirely exempt from justification and doubt. I identify the principle "equals are to be treated equally" as a plausible candidate for transcendental certainty. This certainty is foundational to moral reasoning and enables moral thought. VDP Summer School - Extended Deadline - 4 Dec. 25

Dear VDP members, Unfortunately, we did not receive any proposals for our 2026 summer school this year. As the VDP Summer School is a key event in the internationalisation of our Doctoral School, we would like to encourage any potential teams who missed the initial and second deadlines to submit proposals. We will thus extend the deadline again until 4 December (noon). Please see the call for proposals below. If you have a draft proposal ready and an established team willing to take on this commitment, please apply by then. Best regards, Raphael ---- The Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy is seeking proposals for the sixth edition of its summer school, to take place in 2026. We're currently accepting proposals for organizing and leading our next year's Summer School. Deadline: 4 December 2025 (noon) (CET) Funding: The VDP will cover organizational costs for the conferences, as well as travel expenses for international and local instructors. How to apply? Interested parties should submit a proposal for the upcoming Summer School, which should not exceed 2-3 pages. The proposal should include: 1. Suggested title(s) 2. A description of the summer school 3. Target audience(s) (e.g., late master's students, PhD students, postdocs) 4. Dates 5. Organizing team, including VDP members, postdocs and faculty (ideally up to 4 to 5 members) 6. List of possible instructors 7. About the summer school The European Advanced School for the Philosophy of the Life Sciences (EASPLS) is a biennial one-week summer school that aims at fostering research, facilitating collaborations, and providing professional training to students in the field of the philosophy, history, and social studies of the life sciences, broadly construed. The summer school includes lectures by invited keynote speakers as well as by senior researchers from the organizing consortium, group work, and general discussions. Special sessions will be dedicated to career and skills development. The summer school is aimed at early-career researchers working on any topic in the philosophy, history, and social studies of the life sciences, but every edition of EASPLS has a focus theme. The 2026 focus theme is "philosophy of biology for a healthy planet". Our planet is increasingly facing threats of climate emergency, biodiversity depletion and anthropogenic harms to life cycles around the globe, with challenges including a radical threat to the "health, maintenance and future of the web of life on planet Earth" (UNESCO - Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems). This situation raises the question what it means to lead a healthy life on a threatened planet, what the goal of a "healthy planet" would encompass, and how scientific research may contribute to achieving it. Never before has biological research been under more pressure to address what may constitute healthy living, under which conditions healthy living can still be achieved, and for which species and ecosystems a concept of healthy living can be applied. The philosophy of the life sciences can and should play an important part in addressing such questions. Participants will be able to present their own research and there will be ample time for discussion on participants' own topics, but participants will also be asked to reflect on how their work could contribute to achieving a "healthy planet". His idea that our practice of doubting requires us to rely on "hinges" has gained significant prominence in recent discussions, but many of his other observations on skepticism and the idea of ignorance also allow for a range of interesting applications. Based on a close and attentive reading of Wittgenstein's works, this workshop aims to make progress on understanding our epistemic practice and the issues surrounding it. The workshop will feature keynote lectures by Hans-Johann Glock (Zürich) and Michael Williams (Johns Hopkins), as well as six other talks.
