Dear all,
You are hereby invited to the next "Physics meets Philosophy" talk by
Antoine Soulas (University of Vienna)
Title: An interpretation-independent formulation of the measurement
problem (see abstract below)
Date: May 7th (Wednesday)
Time: 11:00-12:30
Location: IQOQI Seminar room (Boltzmanngasse 3, 2nd floor)
Zoom link (for those that cannot join in person):
https://univienna.zoom.us/j/66902590859?pwd=HaoStYqIbHUcDcq8fMl9MYm6OibV2E.1
Abstract:
In this presentation, I do not try to solve the measurement problem, but
rather to properly formulate it. One of the reasons why it still lacks a
precise, agreed definition is that the problem may take very different
forms depending on the interpretation of QM embraced. I propose to
identify the common root of the puzzle in an interpretation-independent
way (i.e. as a property of the probabilities only) and derive its
philosophical consequences. The key point is that the violation of the
total probability formula in QM does not allow to construct an objective
ontology, independent from epistemology. This enables to: (i) better
compare the different interpretations of QM; (ii) propose a reason why
QM and GR are so fundamentally incompatible, not relying on purely
mathematical or technical arguments.

Dear VDP members,
The DocSchools VDSEE and CoBeNe are pleased to invite you to an upcoming
session on mental health and well-being in academia, which will take
place on Monday, 26 May 2025, at 16:00 via Zoom. Dr. Markus Boeckle,

University for Health Sciences, will lead the session.
This session explores the complex realities of well-being during the PhD
journey. Drawing on current research and professional experience, Dr.

face--from stress and isolation to unclear expectations and role
conflicts--and offer tools for navigating them with more awareness,
agency, and resilience.
About the speaker:
Markus Boeckle's work focuses on psychosocial support for researchers
and developing digital interventions. His research interests include
self-efficacy, future planning, and mental health in academic settings.
He is a coach, supervisor, and psychotherapist with individuals and

Call for Papers (Sonderband, Deadline: 01.10.2025)
Synthese: Feminist Logic
CFP - Synthese Topical Collection - Feminist Logic
Guest editor: Sara Ayhan, Ruhr University Bochum
Deadline: October 1, 2025.
Information page: https://link.springer.com/collections/hiejjifchd
Topical Collection Description:
Feminist Logic examines intersections of formal logic and feminist
philosophy. As such it challenges traditional conceptions both of
feminism and of logic. This is a very broad description, but it captures
the diversity of the field of Feminist Logic that will also be reflected
in the contributions to this topical collection.
More specifically, Feminist Logic can mean
- to use logical tools for feminist ends, e.g., to uncover biases in
arguments or to model social hierarchies to make patriarchal structures
explicit,
- to devise, revise and/or argue for logical systems from a distinctly
feminist perspective, e.g., certain logical systems may seem suited
better or worse for formalizing feminist arguments,
- to look at the history of logic from a feminist perspective, e.g., by
revealing so far disregarded contributions by female logicians and
exposing exclusionary practices that led to their invisibility,
- to consider teaching practices in logic and how those disadvantage
certain underrepresented groups.
As this list of possible topics shows, there are also strong connections
to other discourses in philosophy of logic (e.g., the debates about
logical pluralism, anti-exceptionalism and the normativity of logic) and
in epistemology (e.g., combining formal and social epistemology). Thus,
this is a topic which combines various subdisciplines of philosophy.
Contributions covering any of the above listed topics or which in
another way combine logic and feminist philosophy are welcome. Note that
the listed topics are not meant to be restricted to gender discourses
but that submissions addressing intersectional feminist approaches are
also particularly encouraged.
Submissions will be subject to the usual review process of Synthese and
are to be made via https://www.editorialmanager.com/synt/default.aspx
When submitting, select "T.C. : Feminist Logic" in the drop-down TC
list.

HHU Summer School, 15th ‑ 19th September 2025
Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany

In the intellectual climate following the decline of post-positivist
philosophy of science, scientific pluralism emerged as a direct critical
response to the perceived failure of post-positivism to offer a unified
view of science. Scientific practices began to be understood in a
pluralistic, piecemeal fashion, shifting the focus from a monolithic
conception of science to a multiplicity of approaches (cf. Galison &
Stump 1996). Pluralism has since evolved into an active and explicit
research program within the philosophy of science (cf. Ludwig & Ruby
2021). Very recently, the pluralist stance has materialized in forms
like scientific perspectivism (cf. Giere 2006; Teller 2019; Massimi
2022; Kendig 2024) and pragmatist philosophy of science (cf. Price 2011;
Andersen & Mitchell 2023; Chang 2022).
At the HHU Summer School, we aim to foster a rich dialogue between
pluralism, pragmatism, and perspectivism, anchored in their shared
pluralistic foundations (see Price 2011 for a non-representational
understanding that underlies both pragmatism and causal
perspectivalism). In this context of P3, the role of scientific models
as vehicles of representation (cf. Frigg & Nguyen 2021; 2022) and
traditional conceptions of truth (cf. Andersen 2023) are reinterpreted
through new philosophical lenses. By the same token, the
representational means by which the representational function of models
is achieved are irreducibly pluralistic. (See Suárez 2024's proposal for
representational pluralism). Questions about the role of scientific
instruments and the extent to which instruments are 'perspectival' and
reflect a 'point of view' are becoming increasingly relevant (cf. Giere
2006; Crețu 2022 for a recent reappraisal).
