Dear VDP members,
I would like to ask you to register for the next Pragmatic Academic on
organizing academic events via u:rise. The event is aimed at PhD
students with no experience in organizing academic events. The idea is
to give you a basic overview of the things you need to consider and a
toolkit for organizing different kinds of events at the university.
Experience in organizing academic events is a must for anyone pursuing a
postdoc.

Please register very soon, I will soon announce an open call to other
doctoral schools to close registrations, so better hurry up.

Dear all,
The Philosophy of Science Group by Prof. Knuuttila is kindly inviting
you to join us for the following talk:
Weaving Metaphors into Better Theories – Talk by Oscar Mauricio
Rodríguez Bohórquez
You are warmly invited to a talk by Oscar Mauricio Rodríguez Bohórquez,
Doctor of Medicine and philosophy student at the National Autonomous
University of Mexico (UNAM).
Title: Weaving Metaphors into Better Theories: The Case of Immunology
Date: Friday, 9 May
Time: 15:15
Location: Room 3A
Abstract:
Immunology is undergoing significant changes in its theoretical
foundations. In this presentation, I will assess the relevance of
metaphors as a powerful cognitive and social phenomenon, in advancing
contemporary immunology. I address the problem of how to grasp and
profit from the epistemic role of metaphors in modeling scientific
progress in contemporary immunology through Ludwig Fleck’s concept of
translation in science. My main argument is that, to promote a fruitful
change in immunology, we may need to reconsider its theoretical
framework in conjunction with, rather than separately from, its
metaphors. I propose that the project of reshaping immunity’s imagery is
closely tied to how we conceptualize the organism’s relationship with
the environment. Since metaphors can diversify scientific disciplines
and connect communities with different areas of expertise, they could
play a crucial role in this endeavor.
We hope to see you there!

Dear all,
the Vienna Forum for Analytic Philosophy warmly invites you to join a
talk to be held by Quassim Cassam from the University of Warwick in two
weeks. The title of the talk is "How To Be A Political Epistemologist".
When? Wednesday, 21.05.2025, 01:00 - 2:30 pm
Where? Lecture room 3A, NIG Universitätsstaße 7, 1010 Wien
Abstract
One of the fastest growing areas of philosophy today is political
epistemology. In my lecture, I will discuss the extent to which its
leading figures operate in an epistemic bubble or echo chamber. I will
draw on Kusch's conception of a sociology of philosophical knowledge to
investigate the background assumptions, concerns, ideologies, and master
narratives of mainstream political epistemologists. I will propose a
class-based analysis of political epistemology and explore the
suggestion that this field's major preoccupations are essentially the
preoccupations of what Musa Al-Gharbi calls 'symbolic capitalists'. I
will conclude with a plea for a more diverse and self-critical approach
to political epistemology.
Quassim Cassam has kindly recommended the following texts as preparatory
reading:
* Kusch, M. (1995). Psychologism: The Sociology of Philosophical
Knowledge. Routledge. https://doi.org/10.4324/9780203983898 [1] [read
chapter 2]
* al-Gharbi, M. (2024). We Have Never Been Woke: The Cultural
Contradictions of a New Elite. Princeton University Press. [read
introduction and chapter 1]
The WFAP will discuss them as part of its discussion session at 06:30 pm
on Friday, May 16th in lecture hall 2i, NIG. You can find the
recommended reading attached to this e-mail. Anyone is welcome to join!
Kind regards,

Subject: [News] Einladung zum Workshop „Erreichbarer Frieden“ – 13. Juni
2025
Date: 05.05.2025 13:41
From: Carina Wurzinger <carina.wurzinger(a)univie.ac.at>
To: news(a)lists.philo.at
Erreichbarer Frieden – Eine interdisziplinäre Annäherung
Friedenskonzeptionen unterscheiden sich in der Art und Weise, wie sie
Frieden begreifen: Philosophische Ansätze diskutieren einerseits ideale
Datum: Freitag, 13. Juni 2025
Zeit: 9:00 – 17:00 Uhr (inkl. Mittagspause von 12:30 – 13:30 Uhr)
Ort: Institut für Philosophie, Seminarraum 3A, Universitätsstraße 7,
3. Stock, 1010 Wien
Vortragende:
* Max Haller (Universität Graz)
* Georg Kunovjanek (Theresianische Militärakademie)
* Stephanie Fenkart (International Institute for Peace, IIP)
* Angela Kallhoff (Universität Wien)
* Lisa Tragbar (Universität Wien)
* Andreas Oberprantacher (Universität Innsbruck)
Der Workshop ist kostenlos, aber die Plätze vor Ort sind begrenzt. Ich
bitte daher um eine formlose Anmeldung an lisa.tragbar(a)univie.ac.at.
Eine Online-Teilnahme über Zoom ist möglich. Nach Anmeldung schicken
wir Ihnen gern einen Link zu.
