Wer eine solche Veranstaltung planen möchte, ist herzlich eingeladen, bis zum 15. März 2026 einen Vorschlag für das WiSe 2026/27 oder SoSe 2027 einzureichen. Begrüßt werden neben klassischen Themen der analytischen Philosophie auch Veranstaltungen, die die Stärken der analytischen Philosophie für aktuelle gesellschaftliche Debatten fruchtbar machen. Gefördert werden die Reise- und Hotelkosten und ggf. Abendessen der Sprecher:innen bis zu einer Höchstsumme von insgesamt 2.500EUR. Die Rechnungen sind später einzureichen. Die Organisator:innen oder Teams planen ihre Ringvorlesung inhaltlich und organisatorisch selbst (konzeptionelle Arbeit, Auswahl der Sprecher:innen, Streaming, etc.); zur Beratung steht der GAP-Vorstand zur Verfügung. Der Umfang der (hybriden) Ringvorlesung sollte mindestens sieben Einheiten betragen. Unter den Ausrichter:innen muss mindestens eine Person GAP-Mitglied sein. Die formlosen Bewerbungen sollten eine Beschreibung der Thematik der Ringvorlesung sowie die Namen der angefragten oder anzufragenden Vortragenden enthalten, ferner ein Konzept zu Aufzeichnung und Streaming, einen Zeitplan, Angaben zur curricularen Einbindung für die Studierenden und eine Kostenaufstellung. Vorschläge in Form von kurzen PDF-Dateien (1-2 Seiten genügen) sind bis zum 15. März 2026 zu richten an: info(a)gap-im-netz.de. Der Vorstand wählt unter allen eingegangenen Vorschlägen einen aus. Die Veranstaltung wird als „GAP-Ringvorlesung" in einer Sonder-E-Mail und im Newsletter der GAP angekündigt. Die Mitschnitte sollen später auf dem GAP-YouTube-Kanal zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Dafür ist eine ansprechende Bild- und Tonqualität der Aufnahmen erforderlich. Zur Historie: Bisher haben zwei GAP-Ringvorlesungen stattgefunden. Die erste im SoSe 2024 hatte das Thema „Umkämpfte Begriffe: Philosophische Perspektiven auf Rassismus, Antisemitismus, Sexismus, ..." und wurde von Geert Keil, Anna Schriefl und Markus Schrenk in Berlin und Düsseldorf ausgerichtet. New VDP Statutes

Dear VDP Faculty and PhD Researchers, I am pleased to share the new statutes of our doctoral school with you. These statutes have been unanimously approved by our steering committee and confirmed by our rectorate. They replace the former constitution, which specified our governance structure. The document defines the following: 1. the types of memberships of the VDP and how the school is organised; 2. how the VDP is governed and the tasks of the governing bodies; 3. election procedures; 4. membership and membership termination conditions; 5. a procedure for recruiting external supervisors. These statutes will be published on the new VDP website, which, as you know, is under construction. They should help to ensure an efficient government transition, future government onboarding, and recruitment of external supervisors. Lastly, I would like to thank in particular our Vice-Director, Prof. Arne Moritz, for his work in this document, which is a legacy of his time as interim Director (March–September 2025). Machine Learning (ML) systems are increasingly central to scientific inquiry, from climate modeling and drug discovery to astro- and particle physics. These developments raise fundamental questions about the nature, role, and value of understanding in science: * Does scientific understanding require interpretable models, or can it also be achieved through opaque models? * What is the role of methods from 'explainable Artificial Intelligence'? How do these connect to traditional notions of understanding and explanation? * How do ML methods shift epistemic priorities between explanation and prediction? * Can advances brought about by ML models in science shed new light on the relation between understanding and explanation? * Are new forms of understanding with or without explanation emerging in data-intensive, ML-driven science? * How does understanding with ML models trade on traditional notions related to understanding, such as grasping, skill, or the subject, object and medium of understanding? * Historically, how did ML in science evolve from being mostly a classification device into a rich source of novel representations, knowledge and, potentially, understanding? * In this capacity, how does today's Neural Network-driven ML compare to historically dominant forms of AI, including symbolic ones? The VSI seeks to critically examine how ML is reshaping the epistemic landscape in science, with a particular focus on the concept of scientific understanding. It aims to provide a forum for philosophers of science and ML, as well as philosophically inclined ML practitioners, to assess whether and how ML methods are altering the conceptual and methodological foundations of scientific inquiry. Wittgen=steine talk this Friday

Dear All, The next talk in the "Wittgenstein=steine" series is this Friday (June 13th) at 3pm in room NIG 3D. The speaker is Konstantin Deininger, and his title is: _"On the Material and Formal Aspects of (Moral) Certainty"_. Abstract: Does morality have a binding character in the sense that chains of justification come to an end? In this talk, I will affirm this question and argue that we can plausibly distinguish between formal and material aspects of moral certainty. As a starting point, I will interpret Wittgenstein's idea of "bedrock," introduced in §217 of the Philosophical Investigations, as standing for the end of a chain of reasoning. In doing so, I align with certain Wittgensteinian interpreters who maintain that some chains of moral reasoning end with certainty. However, I will arrive at deviating conclusions by demonstrating that different kinds of moral certainties function in different ways. Wittgensteinian scholars such as Cora Diamond and Nigel Pleasants correctly identify the formal aspect of moral certainty, showing that some propositions resist justification and doubt. However, the candidates for formal certainties they propose do not fully satisfy the criteria of certainty. This, I argue, is due to their failure to adequately distinguish between the formal and material aspects of certainty. Material certainties, such as Diamond's "slavery is unjust and insupportable" or Pleasants' "killing is wrong," remain intelligible to some extent and are thus subject to justification and doubt. Still, these propositions function as regress stoppers by putting an end to the chain of reasoning--but they do not mark the boundary of the unintelligible as formal certainties do. Drawing on Wittgenstein's later writings, I will argue that only formal certainties--which I refer to as transcendental certainties--are entirely exempt from justification and doubt. I identify the principle "equals are to be treated equally" as a plausible candidate for transcendental certainty. This certainty is foundational to moral reasoning and enables moral thought.
