Trans*Formations Workshop with Juliana Gleeson, 15.10.

Dear all, it is a pleasure to invite you to the next installment of the Trans*Formations event series at the department of philosophy. This talk and workshop series organized by the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy provides insights into recent developments in trans* philosophizing. When & Where: October 15, 17:00 to 18:30 at HS 3A, NIG, Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien Intersex: Beyond Introductions! A Book Presentation on _Hermaphrodite Logic_ This workshop will showcase the key arguments made by Juliana Gleeson's new book _Hermaphrodite Logic_ (published June 2025): 1) That intersex advocacy followed on rapidly from intersex people meeting one (on and offline) another in the early 1990s. 2) That this new intersex movement developed in conjunction with feminist research, offering a moment of self-consciousness that was spoken to by intersex advocacy's rhetoric, and wit ("90s edgy"). 3) That their protests from 1996 to the present served as a revelation, which challenged professional authority (specifically claims to clinical "management"), and objectivity, and rewrote the history of sex (in ways still being processed today). Along the way, participants will be challenged in turn, with regards to "intersex" being a topic that requires continual introduction. Gallows humour guaranteed. Juliana Gleeson is a writer and reader raised in west London, who now lives in east Berlin. Her first edited collection was the pioneering anthology Transgender Marxism [1] (2021), which she oversaw with Elle O'Rourke. Well noted for her love of two word titles, her first book Hermaphrodite Logic [2] was published this summer - addressing the history and style of the intersex movement. She's currently writing three follow-ups: a co-written philosophical manuscript _Dyke __Dialectics_, a collection of dialogues about sex hormones, and a brief book on femininity's substance. If you would like to participate in the workshop (which will be in English), please register via U:RISE. However you want to describe the book, it should ultimately be indisputable that _Against Method_ is undoubtedly a classic of modern philosophy of science. Such a book, which was seen as an event in its time and provoked reactions far beyond the scientific community, is more than that: It is a watershed in modern philosophy that still leads to fierce debates about the nature of knowledge, the practice of the scientific community and the theory of knowledge. Since _Against Method_, Feyerabend has devoted much of his career to arguing that science as practiced cannot be described, let alone regulated, by any coherent methodology, whether understood historically, as in Thomas Kuhn's use of paradigms, or epistemologically, as in classical positivism and its offspring. 50 years after the publication of _Against Method_, the conference aims to capture the current significance of this book in modern science. To what extent did it have an impact on debates on science? What influence did it have on the field of modern philosophy of science? To what extent does the historical perception at the time of publication coincide with our current perception? Are there Feyerabendians in philosophy of science today and if so, would Feyerabend have wanted this? Are Feyerabend's conclusions regarding scientific claims and understandings still pungent and timely as ever? VDP Coordinator Consultation Hours Starting this semester, I will be offering consultation hours every Tuesday (working days only) from 10:00 to 11:00 during the winter semester 2025 (WiSe25). You may inform me in advance if you wish to present your case beforehand, but no prior scheduling is required for these consultation hours. Supervision and co-supervision It is advisable that meetings with supervisors take place once per month, and they should occur at least once per semester. If this is not the case, please feel free to contact the VDP office for advice regarding your supervision. All such matters are handled with strict confidentiality. Please also keep in mind that co-supervision and thesis advisory committees are practices encouraged by the University of Vienna to enhance the quality of PhD supervision. Tagung "Deleuze 100. Ein deleuzianisches Jahrhundert?" - 14./15. November, Wien

DELEUZE 100. EIN DELEUZIANISCHES JAHRHUNDERT? AKTUALITÄTEN, PERSPEKTIVEN, ZUKÜNFTE [1] Tagung an der Universität Wien 14./15. November 2025 2025 jährt sich der 100. Geburtstag sowie der 30. Todestag des französischen Philosophen Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995). Zu diesem Anlass widmen wir uns in einer Tagung den mannigfaltigen gegenwärtigen Gebrauchsweisen von Deleuzes Werk und fragen insbesondere nach den produktiven sowie kritischen Perspektiven, welche die Philosophie von Deleuze (und Guattari) bereithält. Foucaults berühmte und von Deleuze selbst als Scherz verstandene Prophezeiung - "Aber eines Tages wird das Jahrhundert vielleicht deleuzianisch sein" (Foucault, _Schriften in vier Bänden II_, 94) - dient dabei als Anlasss einer Bestandsaufnahme wie spekulativer Durchgangspunkt: 100 Jahre zurück, 100 Jahre voraus. Auch im Hinblick auf die im Juli 2027 in Wien stattfindende internationale _Deleuze and Guattari Studies Conference_ laden wir junge sowie etablierte Forscher:innen im November zu _Deleuze 100_ nach Wien ein, um die Potentiale eines von Deleuze inspirierten Denkens auszuloten. Aim In the last decades, several initiatives have dealt with developing ontologies for health, as witnessed by many of the resources provided by the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology (OBO) Foundry. Recently, attention has also been given to modeling sustainability issues, which resulted in ontologies like Sustainability Core Ontology (SCO) [3], Sustainable Development Goals Interface Ontology (SDGIO) [4], Sustainable Met Systems Ontology (SuMSO) [5], and Sustainable Development and Climate (SDC) Ontology [6]. It is imperative to enhance interconnectedness among these ontologies and related applications. In particular, it will be important to communicate across different ontology communities to adequately capture the intrinsic connections between health and sustainability. This workshop aims at promoting discussions in this direction, focusing on waste, especially food and plastic waste, as a starting use case. The choice of this use case is motivated by the intrinsic relevance that this theme holds both in terms of human health and food systems sustainability. Topics of interest for this workshop include, but are not limited to: * Ontologies, logics, and semantics for sustainability and health. * Conceptualizations and models of food and plastic waste. * Ontologies of plastic pollution, including micro- and nanoplastics * Ontology applications to reduce and upscale waste in food systems. * Initiatives to synergize sustainability and health ontologies and applications across ontology communities.
