Dear all,
We are happy to invite you to the first APSE (Applied Philosophy of
Science and Epistemology) lecture of the semester, with a talk by
Gurminder K. Bhambra (University of Sussex).
Title: Critical Theory and the Need for a Political Economy of
Colonialism
When/Where: Thursday, 14th of November, 3-5 pm, ONLINE!
You can join the event via the following Zoom link:
https://univienna.zoom.us/j/69090163424?pwd=Y2JCxwmd7L88U1OPOLw7OCrGuuxZIe.1
Abstract:
Frankfurt School critical theory is grounded in a theory of capitalist
modernity which, in common with wider sociological approaches, elides
histories of colonialism. This results in a misdiagnosis of current
problems of inequality and inadequate solutions for their address. Many
critical theorists, for example, focus primarily on issues of
redistribution associated with a capital-labour relation organised
nationally and now seen to be threatened by globalisation and migration.
Such an understanding fails to account for how the decommodification of
labour through the development of national welfare arrangements in the
West – an explicit issue for critical theory from Habermas's
"Legitimation Crisis" onward – has been bound to wider colonial
histories and, specifically, colonial patrimonies. A proper address of
these issues requires a more expansive approach to distributive justice
conducted in a reparative frame that recognizes the ways in which the
legacies of our shared, but asymmetrically experienced, colonial pasts
continue to configure the present and its possibilities. It involves
making colonial histories central to understandings of capitalist
modernity and to the normative address of inequalities that otherwise
risk being legitimated by the standard accounts of critical theory. In
this talk, I take issue with the central conceptualisation of modern
society as capitalist at its core, and the way in which capitalism is
understood separately from colonialism. I further question the implicit
nationalism of critical theory and argue that what is missing from it is
a political economy of colonialism.
Please feel free to share this invitation with anyone who might be
interested.

(1) STELLENAUSSCHREIBUNG (Bamberg und Bayreuth, Deadline: 15.11.2024)
Short-Term Position (up to one year, 0.65 FTE, 13 TV-L) in Theoretical
Political Science and Philosophy
*Short-term position* (up to one year, 0.65 FTE, 13 TV-L) in Theoretical
Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Bamberg and the
University of Bayreuth.
The position will be affiliated with the Chair of Theoretical Political
Science (Prof. Dr. Johannes Marx) at the Otto-Friedrich-Universität
Bamberg or the Chair of Philosophy I (Prof. Dr. Olivier Roy) at the
University of Bayreuth as part of the research project "Simulating
Collective Agency "(SColA), funded by the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft.
Description:
The SColA project studies mechanisms underlying the emergence and
stability of collective agency. It first investigates the role of shared
beliefs and intentions for the emergence and stability of collective
agents, and second, it studies how these shared attitudes contribute to
the stability, growth, or decline of autonomy in such groups. The
project will do so through a computational and game-theoretical study of
so-called' team reasoning' (Bacharach, 2006), an extension of classical
non-cooperative game theory in which the players can reason either
individually or as a team member.
Candidate profile:
* Initiative and aptitude for teamwork.
* Background in Philosophy or Political Science, interested in
theoretical questions and computational
approaches.
* Familiarity with decision, game theory, and practical philosophy in
the analytic tradition.
* Basic experience with programming.
The position is relatively flexible and can be adapted to the successful
candidate's timeline and experience, e.g. by turning it to a 1.0 FTE for
a shorter period. Its main purpose is to conduct scientific research
related to the SColA project. It could, however, also be used to prepare
a funding application for a follow-up position. The SColA project
finishes on November 30th, 2025, and the position cannot be extended
beyond that date. Remote work is possible.

== Topic:
In 1960, physicist and Nobel Laureate Eugene Wigner wrote an article
entitled "The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural
Sciences." Wigner was surprised that the mathematical structure of a
physical theory not only accurately describes the physical world but
also leads to new predictions and further advances. This phenomenon
puzzled him, leading to the term "unreasonable effectiveness": Why is
mathematics so effective in describing the natural world? More recently,
a Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for work that many might consider
to belong to computer science. The first image of a black hole, for
example, relied heavily on sophisticated code. Formal tools are now
integral to many complex measurements, cutting across various scientific
practices.
We are organizing a two-day exploratory workshop. The main theme will
broadly explore the applicability of mathematics both within and outside
its traditional boundaries. Day 1 will focus on the use of mathematical
tools in the sciences, particularly in the life sciences. The life
sciences are increasingly becoming more mathematical, and there are
ongoing fruitful discussions-both scientific and philosophical-on how
mathematics should be coordinated with biological and medical phenomena.
Day 2 will shift to internal mathematical considerations, such as how
formal tools, like theorem-proving software, can be applied to these
interdisciplinary efforts. Moreover, "applicability" has become a major
theme in mathematical research, as some analytical resources prove to be
more suitable for different contexts within pure mathematics. This is a
topic that has recently garnered the attention of philosophers of
mathematics, especially those interested in the "practice turn" in
philosophy.
Finally, a common thread throughout both days of the workshop is the
ethical dimension. The way we mathematize and quantify the real world,
and how automation influences various fields, has wide-reaching
implications for society and numerous professional practices.

Moral rights occupy a central place in contemporary moral theorizing. At
the same time, a promising hypothesis in the theory of normativity is
that normative phenomena (including moral phenomena) can be explained in
terms of reasons, i.e., in terms of the factors that count in favour of
actions or attitudes. The aim of this workshop is to investigate and
discuss the relation between moral rights and normative reasons.
The workshop will focus on (but is not limited to) questions such as the
following:
What are the connections between moral rights, moral duties, and moral
reasons?
Can rights be analysed in terms of reasons or should rights be
regarded as reason-providing?
What (if anything) do reasons-based analyses of rights imply for the
justification of moral rights and for first-order moral theory?
What can our best accounts of moral rights contribute to our
understanding of normative reasons?
Participation is free, but registration is required and places are
limited.

Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Georg Schiemer
On two types of instrumental devices
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 14/11/2024
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 2G
Abstract:
Instrumental devices are linguistic expressions that are formal or non-representational but nevertheless indispensable or at least instrumentally useful for certain theoretical purposes. We give a systematic study of such expressions and their roles in theorizing, thus offering a unified treatment of instrumental devices across different philosophical areas. Specifically, we present an explication of two general types of such devices, namely merely expressive devices and merely inferential devices and discuss their respective theoretical roles based on a number of philosophical examples. Joint work with Hannes Leitgeb (LMU Munich).
Summer School
Call for Applications
(Deadline: February 15, 2025)
23rd univie: summer school Scientific World Conceptions (USS-SWC)
The History and Epistemology of Econometrics
Vienna, July 7-11, 2025
https://summerschool-ivc.univie.ac.at/
Course Description
Models and their econometric estimation play an increasingly important role
in modern economic and political life. From macroeconomic policy and
financial regulation to public health and climate policy, models contribute
to shaping policies. The generation of ever more data is likely to support
the proliferation of models and econometrics. Research resources in academia
focus on the theoretical foundations of the underlying model and on the
statistical methods of econometrics; much less attention is devoted to the
epistemological challenges of the underlying concepts, the normative
challenges of the everyday work with econometrics, and the application of
its results in policy decisions and evaluation.
The objective of this program is to increase attention amongst philosophers
of science, academic economists, and empirical economists in policy
institutions (eg, central banks) to these issues.
The course is also structured around a particular point of
view namely, that economics is a science of models and that most of the
main features of econometrics relate generally to the role of models in
science.
Topics will be selected reflecting participants interests and may include:
* History of econometrics to frame the philosophical issues to be
discussed in the course
* The Vienna Circle and econometrics
* Values and Ethical Pitfalls in econometric research
* Key philosophical issues of how models relate to the world and how
they relate to each other
* Data: observation, classification, and measurement of economic
variables from a modeling point of view
* Conceptual issues related to modeling randomness
* The identification problem: how possibly, if at all possible, to
map descriptive relations onto theoretical variables?
* Issues related to optional stopping, search methodologies, and the
proper interpretation of results obtained through search
* Different approaches to the nature of causation and different
strategies of causal inference
* The conceptual basis of graphical causal modeling and controlled,
natural, and field experiments
* The conceptual issues surrounding the problem of model
uncertainty, as well as some of the strategies economists use to address it
Main Lecturers:
Kevin D. Hoover (Duke University)
Kevin D. Hoover is Professor of Economics and Philosophy and Senior Fellow
of the Center for the History of Political Economy at Duke University. He
is the editor of the journal History of Political Economy and a past editor
of the Journal of Economic Methodology. His current research addresses
causality, causal inference in economics, the history of macroeconomics,
philosophical issues related to the microfoundations of macroeconomics, and
the engagement with economics of the American pragmatist philosopher
Charles. S. Peirce. He is the author of The New Classical Macroeconomics,
the Methodology of Empirical Macroeconomics, Causality in Macroeconomics,
Applied Intermediate Macroeconomics, as well as many articles in monetary
and macroeconomics, the history of economics, the philosophy of economics,
and applied econometrics.
Jennifer Jhun (Duke University)
Jennifer Jhun is an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department at Duke
University, as well as a Senior Fellow of the Center for the History of
Political Economy. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of
Pittsburgh. Her main research interests are in the philosophy of science,
especially philosophy of economics, but also in issues in other areas, such
as psychology and physics. She is currently engaged on a project that
investigates antitrust from a historical and philosophy-of-science
perspective: Whats the Point of ceteris Paribus? or, How to Understand
Supply and Demand Curves. Philosophy of Science 85, no. 2 (2018): 271-292;
Economics, Equilibrium Methods, and Multi-scale Modeling. Erkenntnis 86,
no. 2 (2021): 457-472; Multi-Model Reasoning in Economics: The Case of
COMPASS. Philosophy of Science 90, no. 4 (2023): 836-854; Implied Market
Shares and Antitrust Markets as Fuzzy Sets. Forthcoming at The Antitrust
Bulletin. (Joint with Matthew Panhans, Federal Trade Commission)
Guest Lecturer:
Marcel Boumans (University of Utrecht)
Marcel Boumans is historian and philosopher of science at Utrecht
University. His main research focus is on understanding empirical research
practices in science outside the lab from a philosophy of
science-in-practice perspective. He is particularly interested in the
practices of measurement and modelling and the role of mathematics in social
science. The first step in these practices is to make sense of the available
data. Visualisations play an important role in this. His current research
project Vision and Visualisation is nearing completion with a book
manuscript Shaping the Phenomena.
The program is primarily directed at graduate students and junior
researchers in philosophy of science and economics as well as empirical
economists at policy institutions (eg, central banks) but the organizers
also encourage applications from people in all stages of their career and
from fields other than economics that apply advanced econometrics.

(5) STELLENAUSSCHREIBUNG (Zürich, Deadline: 20.01.2025)
PhD Position in Philosophy at the University of Zurich
The Institute of Philosophy at the University of Zurich offers a 4-year
funded PhD position under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Michael Messerli.
_Brief Description of the Project_
Human motivations sometimes change. A travel lover stops flying to
distant places in the face of climate change. A politician begins to
seek power instead of justice. Sometimes changing preferences seems to
be a good thing; at other times, it appears regrettable. How we evaluate
such changes is an important question. At the same time, we must
understand how preference change comes about in the first place. Why do
one person's preferences change in response to a given situation when
the preferences of another person - in a similar situation - do not?
When is it rational to change one's preferences?
Despite its strengths, standard decision theory cannot answer these
questions. That is, it cannot describe fundamental preference changes.
This calls for a paradigm shift in the relevant academic disciplines.
However, it is only recently that decision theorists have started to
develop new approaches to examining the question of preference change.
Furthermore, crucial normative issues have been neglected. For example,
once we better understand preference change, some might suggest that we
should try to change people's preferences, building on recent
influential research concerning changing the behavior and choices of
individuals via "nudges" or by modifying the "choice-architecture."
This project will adopt a conceptual, model-building, rational and
normative approach to motivational change and develop and empirically
test an original model of preference change. Its main objectives are:
(1) To understand motivational change better, both descriptively and
conceptually (What is motivational change? How should motivational
change be modeled?)
(2) To develop an original model of motivational change - the
"commitment-based theory" - and test whether it is normatively and
descriptively adequate (Does the theory stand up to normative testing?
Does the theory make correct predictions?)
(3) To explore and evaluate the normative dimensions of preference
change (When is a preference change rational? Are there other normative
constraints on motivational change? Are adaptive preferences rational?
Why are adaptive preferences so relevant in the context of current
feminist philosophy? Should we change people's preferences?)
_PhD Project_
In tackling some of these problems, the applicant can work within the
following areas:
- Nudging
- Adaptive Preferences
- Ethics
- Rationality
- Value Theory
- Decision Theory
- Other topic related to the project on Motivational Change
_Scientific Requirements_
The candidate should:
- Have a Master's degree in philosophy at the moment of starting the PhD
position
- Have a strong analytical background
- Be an independent thinker, enthusiastic and physically present
- Be socially competent and motivated to work with people in the
Department
_Salary _
The PhD position is fully funded for 4 years.
_How to Apply_
Applications must be sent by e-mail to Michael Messerli
(mich_messerli(a)yahoo.de) by 20 January 2025. They should include the
following documents (in one single pdf file):
- CV
- A short description of which research question the candidate would be
interested to work with (approx. 2 pages)
- A writing sample (e.g. a Chapter of MA-thesis, approx. 15-20 pages)
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in February 2025 (in Zurich
or via Zoom).
_Start of Employment_
Employment start April 1, 2025, not later than May 1, 2025.

(6) CALL FOR PAPERS (Konstanz, Deadline: 28.02.2025)
What is the Point of Morality?
_When?_ June 5 and 6, 2025
_Where? _University of Konstanz, Germany
_Submission Deadline:_ February 28, 2025
_Organizers: _Stefan Fischer, Jacob Rosenthal
_Conference Topic:_
Does morality have a point or function, and if so, what is it? Can we
learn anything about the nature of morality by asking for its point? And
what, if anything, would a point of morality imply for normative ethics
and metaethics? The aim of the conference is to bring together moral

(7) CALL FOR PAPERS (Special Issue, Deadline: 01.04.2025)
Synthese: New Waves in Hinge Epistemology (Topical Collection)
_Guest Editor(s):_ Jakob Ohlhorst - VU Amsterdam, Andrew Sherrod -
University of Glasgow, Martin Miragoli - University of Glasgow, Nikolaj
Pedersen - Yonsei University
_Topical Collection Description: _In recent years, a new idea has taken
root in contemporary epistemological theorising that proposes a shift of
attention from singular beliefs of individual agents to maintenance
practices of entire belief systems. This new perspective, going back to
Ludwig Wittgenstein's late work, takes its moves from the key assumption
that our belief systems are ultimately supported by sets of unquestioned
pre-theoretical presuppositions, which function as the hinges of our
systems of thought. Hinge Epistemology, as the area of research
sprouting from this basic model has come to be known, has taken a more
applied and interdisciplinary turn in recent years. Drawing on cognitive
scientific theories, hinges have been compared to procedural knowledge,
drawing on feminist theory and social science, they have been compared
with prejudices. Additionally, hinge epistemologists have engaged with
the Moorean concept of common knowledge.
_Appropriate Topics for Submission include, among others: _
* How do hinges relate to non-standard, non-JTB, kinds of knowledge?
* What role do hinges play for political disagreement?
* How can hinges be applied in cognitive scientific models?
* What role do hinges play in pedagogical contexts?
* What is the ethics of hinge epistemology?
For further information, please contact the guest editor(s):
j.ohlhorst2(a)vu.nl;
The deadline for submissions is 01.04.2025. Submissions to the Topical
Collection will be subject to the normal Synthese review process.

(10) VERANSTALTUNGSANKÜNDIGUNG (Groningen & Online, 09-10.01.2025,
Registration Deadline: 29.12.2024)
Climate Change and the Long-Term Future - a PPE Winter School (online)
Date: January 9 - January 10, 2025
Location: online; hosted by the Faculty of Philosophy and Centre for PPE
at the University of Groningen
More information: link [4]
After several successful installments, the Faculty of Philosophy of the
University of Groningen [5] will host its yearly Winter School, aimed
primarily at advanced undergraduate students and early-stage graduate
students. The theme of the Winter School is Climate Change and the
Long-Term Future. It will consist of 6 lecture tutorials where topics
related to the theme will be discussed from different disciplinary
viewpoints: Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE). To facilitate
attendance by people from outside the Netherlands and Europe, the winter
school will be held online.
_Theme_
Climate change is among the biggest challenges humanity faces today. How
should individuals, societies, and humanity at large respond to climate
change and other long-term challenges? Far from being a question for the
natural sciences alone, a good answer also requires a 'PPE perspective',
that is, a perspective that combines philosophy, politics, and
economics. In this winter school, different researchers will take a PPE
perspective in exploring climate change and our ethical and political
obligations towards future people. The winter school starts with
fundamental normative questions, such as: What are our moral obligations
to future people? Do they extend to all future people and, if so, does
this imply that our longtermist moral duties trump any short-term
concerns? Climate change mitigation is typically seen as a collective
action problem and calls for an institutional solution that facilitates
widespread cooperation among individuals and countries. But what exactly
makes for successful and sustainable institutions? And a
social-psychological perspective will ask: what explains people's
attitudes and actions towards the environment and future generations and
how can those be improved? How can democracies respond to wide
disagreement around climate impacts and appropriate mitigation measures?
And, finally, what are effective solutions to securing a sustainable
energy supply? For example, should such a mix include nuclear energy?
And are European carbon pricing initiatives on the right track?
_Programme _
Prof Lisa Herzog [6], 'Climate Science and Democracy - Considerations
from Political Epistemology'
Prof Frank Hindriks [7], 'Sustainable institutions'
Prof Marijke Leliveld [8], 'Sustainability and other moral behavior: a
psychological perspective'
Prof Edwin Woerdman [9], 'Carbon pricing policies in the EU: a law and
economics perspective'
Prof Simon Friederich [10], 'Climate change as a collective action
problem and the importance of very cheap energy'
Prof Andreas T. Schmidt [11], 'Longtermism and our duty towards
far-future people'
The winter school is aimed at advanced undergraduate students and
early-stage graduate students. It also offers students interested in
studying the PPE Master [12] in Groningen an insight into the kinds of
teaching and research done at the PPE Centre.

SCIENTIFIC PICTURES, MODELS, AND THEIR JUSTIFICATION

ABSTRACT:
In this paper, I first show that similarity accounts of scientific
pictures fail with more realistic cases of scientific pictures. My
primary case study is the picture of a black hole, from which I develop
an interpretation-based account of picture representation analogous to
how models represent: a picture represents a designated target system
iff, once interpreted, it exemplifies properties that are then imputed
to the target via a de-idealising function. Then, I show that
justification of the inferences from pictures crucially depends on their
causal mechanisms of production, in contrast with the standard
justificatory strategies we employ for model inferences.

(1) STELLENAUSSCHREIBUNG (Bremen, Deadline: 29.11.2024)
13 PhD Positions in Contradiction Studies at the University of Bremen
The Research Training Group "Contradiction Studies--Constellations,
Heuristics and Concepts of the Contradictory" at the University of
Bremen is welcoming applications for 13 3-year positions as Doctoral
Candidates.
This interdisciplinary group examines the ways in which individuals,
groups, institutions, and states navigate the concept of contradiction,
particularly in relation to the prevalent demand for consistency
(freedom from contradiction). It aims to develop novel forms and
procedures for addressing the inherent contradictions of living
together. (Philosophers should note that it not only studies logical
contradictions, but also a broad range of other types of
contradictions.)
Members of the group are expected to complete their dissertation over
the course of the term. They are expected to participate in the
modularized doctoral program and in the group's research colloquium. The
working language of the program is generally English. The positions
carry no teaching obligation and are 75% positions paid on a TV-L 13
basis (which translates to a net pay of at least 26.500EUR/year).
Deadline for application is Nov 29, the positions are expected to begin
on June 1, 2025.

(2) VERANSTALTUNGSANKÜNDIGUNG (Bochum & Online, 08.11.2024)
The Role of Imagination in Learning, Understanding, and Knowledge
Dear all,
We cordially invite you to the hybrid Workshop "The Role of Imagination
in Learning, Understanding, and Knowledge", which will be held at the
Ruhr-Universität Bochum (GA 04/187) on the 8th of November 2024, from
9:30 to 17:15 CET.
Philosophers across various traditions and areas of research have long
debated the epistemic roles of imagination. While imagination is often
associated with creative thinking and the discovery of possible or
fantastical worlds, the question remains: does imagination enhance our
understanding of the actual world and help us acquire knowledge?
This workshop brings together experts across various
fields--phenomenology, philosophy of language, and philosophy of
mind--to examine the diverse epistemic roles of imagination. By
exploring how imagination can be a source of learning, deepen
understanding, and contribute to knowledge formation, we aim to foster
interdisciplinary dialogue and uncover new insights into this essential
cognitive process.
Confirmed speakers:
* Kristina Liefke (Ruhr University Bochum)
* Joshua Myers (University of Barcelona)
* Sofia Pedrini (Ruhr University Bochum)
* Zuzanna Rucińska (University of Antwerp)
* Alfredo Vernazzani (Ruhr University Bochum)

(3) VERANSTALTUNGSANKÜNDIGUNG (Online, 15.11.2024)
Call for Interferences - Act up/Building up: EcoTechGender Action Group
Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists, Paderborn
University
The era of strictly demarcated sciences is over, at least since the
COVID-19 pandemic. Over the years, changing social values, modern
technologies, but also scientific misconduct and demands for
emancipation based on diversity have led to the fact that science has
become a multidisciplinary but also increasingly interwoven institution
since at least the second half of the 20th century. The present bias is
particularly evident in the institutionalization of knowledge and
content from the humanities and the natural sciences and technology,
which are in part still strictly separated and not automatically related
to each other. This lack of contextualization and intertwining of
nature, culture, technology, society, and gender theory can be
illustrated by a number of problematic examples: Crash test dummies that
only represent men and make cars all the more unsafe for women; toxic
cultures of masculinity in engineering courses that make it almost
impossible for women to build careers and reveal a serious lack of
female role models; racist or sexist algorithms that overwhelm the
increasingly important AI and fuel resentment; or supposedly glorious
inventions by men for women, such as the Pinky Gloves released in 2021,
that reveal a sometimes disastrous picture of gender stereotyping. All
these examples clearly show that there is an urgent need to link the
cultural sciences and humanities, which have been strictly separated,
with the natural, technical, information and engineering sciences.
However, these experiences also show how strong the influences of
social, political, economic and societal factors are, which also have an
unconscious effect on the natural and technical sciences and their
results. This modern change therefore confirms all the more the
establishment of an interlocking perspective and instructions for action
for the scientific enterprise. An appropriate culture/expansion of
discourse makes it possible to show how research in the natural,
technical, information, and engineering sciences can be seen and
evaluated in a multiple and constantly changing world in the context of
society, politics, the environment, technology, and gender. Science is
no longer a homogeneous and awe-inspiring entity that can sustain
itself. It is increasingly criticized and confronted with demands to
open up and to represent all aspects of social life in an interconnected
way. There is therefore a need for other interfaces and interconnections
that drive this world of research, transform it, make it usable, and
build it in a future-oriented way. This particular entanglement has
always been explored in the EcoTechGender research project [1] (est.
2007 by Prof. Dr. Ruth E. Hagengruber [2]).
In the context of a workshop, we would like to emphasize this importance
once again, work it out together, and offer space for a
philosophical-interdisciplinary workshop and discourse in which young
scientists can present their visions and contributions to the
entanglement field of EcoTechGender. In addition to invited speakers,
lecture slots will be advertised in order to provide a platform for
exchange for interested young scientists. The aim of the workshop is to
present different perspectives on EcoTechGender from young scholars from
different academic disciplines to show the interferences of humanities,
social sciences, science and technology studies, medicine and computer
science.
The workshop will be introduced by our Keynoter _Kateryna Karpenko [3]_,
Director of the Center for Gender Studies at Kharkiv National Medical
University, Ukraine. Afterwards, we will have the opportunity to follow
and listen to several different PhD students from STEM fields,
STS-Studies, medicine, gender studies and philosophy, who will present
their views and ideas on EcoTechGender. For more inspiration have a look
at our preliminary program [4].
The Workshop will take place on November 15, 2024 at the _Center for the
History of Women Philosophers and Scientists_ as _online event._ For
participation please register via our registration platform [5].
_The workshop is organized by __Ruth E. Hagengruber [2]__ & __Felix

(7) VERANSTALTUNGSANKÜNDIGUNG (Heidelberg, 23-24.01.2025)
Workshop: Recent Work on Authoritative and Formal Normativity
Over the past decades, a range of different fields in philosophy has
made use of the distinction between a _formal _and an _authoritative
_variety of normativity. However, within the metanormative literature,
scholars have come forward raising doubts about the conceivability of
that distinction, and several attemps have been made to rebuttal these
reasons supporting scepticism. In the course of this workshop, we aim to
bring different voices and perspectives on the authoritative-formal
divide and its application together.

Dear all,
Please find below a Call for Registration for our workshop on the Ethics
of Climate Emergency that will take place here at the University of
Vienna on November 15.
Workshop on the Ethics of Climate Emergency
Co-hosted by Department of Philosophy University of Vienna and Knowledge
in Crisis FWF Cluster of Excellence.
November 15, 2024
Room 3A, Universitätsstraße 7 (NIG)
Department of Philosophy, University of Vienna
A declaration of climate emergency calls for a radical break from
business-as-usual in climate policy. Yet it raises crucial moral,
political and institutional questions: Should the demands of urgency and
the extent of potential harm alter procedures of decision-making or
frameworks of justification? Which courses of action/institutions are
permissible to avoid the harms of global warming? How should we
understand responsibilities for remedying loss and damage as well as
future generations in the context of climate emergency? This one-day
workshop will bring together researchers working on the above and
related issues surrounding climate emergency.
Speakers:
Kathrin von Allmen (Harvard University)
Ali Emre Benli (University of Vienna)
Angela Kallhoff (University of Vienna)
Ross Mittiga (SOAS University of London)
Tracey Skillington (University College Cork)
The workshop is free, but places are limited. Online participation is
