While debates on economic justice often take place within specific political camps, where many assumptions are shared, the Dortmund Disputes take a different approach. The idea of the Dortmund Disputes is to foster debate across political boundaries. It seeks to bring together open-minded scholars with diverse political outlooks--whether liberal egalitarian, libertarian, socialist, conservative, or otherwise--who are committed to our shared goal of advancing our understanding of economic justice. The keynote speakers for the first installment of the Dortmund Disputes are Miranda Fleischer and Nicholas Vrousalis. Miranda Fleischer is Richard and Kaye Woltman Professor in Finance at University of San Diego's School of Law. Her work focuses on ethical and legal issues surrounding taxation, wealth and wealth transfer, and charitable giving. She's the co-author of a recent book on Universal Basic Income. Nicholas Vrousalis is Associate Professor in Practical Philosophy at Erasmus University Rotterdam [2]. His work revolves around distributive ethics, democratic theory, and the history of political philosophy, with emphasis on Kant, Hegel, and Marx. He is the author of a recent book on capitalism and exploitation. We invite scholars to apply with an abstract of around 500 words. Abstracts will be selected based on their quality, fit with the spirit of the conference, and broad alignment with the research interests of the keynote speakers. But experts are not beyond doubt. In his forthcoming book, Thomas Grundmann argues that a different attitude towards experts is needed. Laypeople should stop thinking for themselves and typically defer to experts. In short, laypeople should treat experts as epistemic authorities. Grundmann presents a novel argument for this bold view and engages with its main challenges. For example, doesn't the view make experts too powerful and completely immune to criticism? The book replies to these and many more concerns about the authority of experts. Dear doctoral students, we are formally inviting you to the first student assembly of the new academic year on 31 october from 5 – 7 pm in room 2i, NIG (2nd floor, universitätsstraße 7, 1010 vienna). The schedule will be the following: i) short overview of numbers, fundings and (last year's) budget, provided by the scientific coordinator of the VDP Raphael Aybar ii) objectives and issues to be brought forward at the next VDP steering committee meetings/ STUKO meetings and to be pursued in the upcoming year on behalf of the doctoral researcher representatives iii) observations, questions, suggestions on behalf of the doctoral students iv) advice, insights and discussion with Léah Maurer and Isabel Seelmann from the SSC; possibility to ask for information regarding recognition/administrative processes or similar We strongly encourage all doctoral students to attend the meeting and participate in the discussion, as this is an essential contribution to the doctoral community and an opportunity to raise important observations and concerns. Researchers who are new at the department are encouraged to use this space for connecting with their colleagues and sharing their questions and needs. RIPPLE visiting fellowship (KU Leuven - Political Philosophy and Ethics)

*SHORT-TERM VISITING FELLOWSHIP IN POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY AND ETHICS (AY25-26)* RIPPLE <https://hiw.kuleuven.be/ripple/> (Research in Political Philosophy and Ethics Leuven) welcomes applications for a visiting fellowship during the academic year 2025-2026. The fellow will be a full member of RIPPLE for the duration of the visit and will be provided with accommodation, internet access, office space, and access to university libraries. The fellow will be expected to participate in the group's activities, make use of the provided office space, as well as to present their current research by way of a lecture or seminar to the RIPPLE group. The fellowship is given for a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 3 months and can be taken up between 22 September 2025 and 27 June 2026. Please note that January and June are exam months in Leuven with no RIPPLE activities; we also have an Easter break from 4 April to 19 April 2026. The stipend covers the fellow’s travel costs up to 1500 euro (some restrictions apply), as well as accommodation (for the fellow and partner/children) in Leuven. However, these discussions have become so rich and entangled that now we can speak of a confusing "plurality of [scientific] pluralisms" (Wylie 2015). The overall goal of this workshop is to examine and clarify different ideas of scientific pluralism. While proponents of scientific pluralism argue that pluralism offers a range of epistemic benefits which are conducive to scientific progress (Chang, 2012, 2022), pluralism not only comes with benefits but also with costs (e.g., Lari and Mäki 2024). This raises the question of the conditions under which pluralism contributes to scientific progress and those under which it may impede it. In addition to its role in promoting progress, the relationship between pluralism and the social and institutional organisation of science is also a subject of growing debate. Given that science is significantly shaped by social values (Longino 1990), scientific pluralism is increasingly discussed in the context of social and epistemic diversity as a crucial element for objective and inclusive knowledge production. One of the primary subjects to be addressed is that of how diverse research groups can fruitfully collaborate in order to foster scientific progress, and what part institutions play in this process. The workshop investigates the complex relationship between scientific pluralism, epistemic diversity and scientific progress, both theoretically and through the examination of case studies. The overall goal is to discuss whether pluralism hinders or contributes to progress, and to explore the roles of institutional and social structures in this dynamic. It offers an open space to present and discuss the participants' current projects. The colloquium is organized jointly by the chair for philosophy of religion (Sebastian Gäb) and the Romano Guardini chair (Ana Honnacker). In recent years, philosophy of religion has more and more been confronted with the charge of having reached a dead end. Critics argue that as a discipline, philosophy of religion is preoccupied with Western theism in its most scholastic version, and that it ignores non-Western and non-theist forms of religion. Instead of studying just one particular religion, it is argued, philosophers of religion should rather devote their attention to the phenomenon of religion itself, in all its different manifestations. Consequently, traditional philosophy of religion should be replaced with a new, globalized philosophy of religion, as e.g. Victoria Harrison, or Yujin Nagasawa have argued. The colloquium will focus on all issues in connection with the concept of a globalized philosophy of religion, for example: what methods should philosophers of religion use when engaging with non-Western religions? When Susan Stryker stood up at a Lesbian and Gay History conference in New York in 1995 and yelled “I am a transsexual and I am not sick!”, she reclaimed the participation of the transsexual intellectual in the production of truths, refuting discourses of dehumanization. This inaugural scene of Trans Studies places the undoing of epistemic violence as both a precondition and a fundamental commitment of trans theoretical practice. But what does this commitment to emancipatory forms of knowledge production entail? What are the contradictions of aspiring to anti-normative purity? What conversations can we build on the repeated condemnation of those reproducing symbolic violence? Does this commitment not miss the practical reason of cultural narratives? And is it possible to separate the epistemic violence from our sense of self, our needs and desires? Do the voices of trans people really hold the key to an emancipatory meaning? And if we betray the idea that we just need to let trans people speak, what then can hold the possibility of undoing epistemic violence? In this talk, I reflect on these questions based on my own research trajectory, which spans topics such as trans subcultural spaces, neuroscientific studies of (trans)gender identity and trans social reproduction in global capitalism. The talk traces the shifts of my theoretical practice by building a personal cartography of minor truths. I take the term “minor truths” from the title of a show by the artist Spence Messih. Their glasswork compositions and philosophical considerations introduce a phenomenological sensibility in my analysis, inspiring me to search for a language that reflects the inseparability of theoretical standpoint from affective states, social relationships and political conjunctures. In conversation with Messih’s work, the talk evolves in a non-linear motion connecting five modes of epistemic experience: abstraction, vulnerability, praxeology, dialogue and betrayal. Bio: Eric Llaveria Caselles is a PhD Candidate at the Center for Interdisciplinary Women and Gender Studies (ZIFG) at the Technical University Berlin. His recent publications explore the limitations of gender identity positivism and queer deconstructivism as the two main approaches to trans theory. His research builds on current trans Marxist proposals and historical materialist traditions of gender theory to set the groundwork for an alternative framework in Trans Studies. The Academic Writing Workshop “_From First to Final Draft: Revising Academic Texts_” will focus on strategies for revising and finalizing academic texts. The workshop covers the different aspects and stages of reworking and revising academic texts at PhD level. This includes recognizing issues and translating feedback into concrete issues. We will cover structural revisions (paragraphs, connecting paragraphs, argumentation structure), reading flow, style (personal/impersonal, vague/precise), positioning (critique of sources, confident position), and succinctness (concise phrasing to reduce word count). The workshop is tailored to PhD-Students, but master’s students are also welcome to join. VDP Academic Writing Workshop (15.10.24) & VDP Writing Evenings (changed to tuesdays!)

VDP Academic Writing Workshop From First to Final Draft: Revising Academic Texts - Markus Rheindorf Tuesday, October 15, 2024, 13:00 - 14:30 Room 3A, NIG 3rd floor, Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Vienna For the winter semester 2024-25, the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy (VDP) and the Early Career Scholars Working Group of the East European Network for Philosophy of Science (EENPS) are planning a hybrid kick-off workshop to start into our weekly Writing Evenings. The Academic Writing Workshop “From First to Final Draft: Revising Academic Texts” will focus on strategies for revising and finalizing academic texts. The workshop covers the different aspects and stages of reworking and revising academic texts at PhD level. This includes recognizing issues and translating feedback into concrete issues. We will cover structural revisions (paragraphs, connecting paragraphs, argumentation structure), reading flow, style (personal/impersonal, vague/precise), positioning (critique of sources, confident position), and succinctness (concise phrasing to reduce word count). The workshop is tailored to PhD-Students, but master’s students are also welcome to join. This email is to welcome you and provide you with some basic information for the winter semester that has just started. To apply for the fellowship, you and your supervisor(s) must submit a completed application, which is available in our Moodle (in "All Forms"). Amount: EUR 1,050 per month Duration: up to 6 months The scholar will not be provided with office space at the university. The scholar may not have received financial support for the doctoral project for more than two years (through contractual employment with the university, a third party, or a fellowship) and not within the six months prior to application. At the time of application, work on the dissertation must have progressed to the point where it can be realistically expected that the dissertation can be submitted by the end of the funding period (maximum 6 months). Multiple funding from other organizations or the university is excluded. Recipients are responsible for all taxes and insurance during the fellowship period and are advised that any net annual income in excess of EUR 8,580 will be taxable. The scholarship will be considered as "income from self-employment".
