Call for Abstracts Graduate Conference Identity and Right-Wing Ideology Freie Universität Berlin Institute for Philosophy 14 February 2025 Confirmed keynote speakers: Nikita Dhawan (TU Dresden) and Torsten Menge (Northwestern University in Qatar) Right-wing movements have increased exponentially over the last decade. They pose a threat to democratic political systems by promoting nationalism, xenophobia, racism, and politically motivated violence. They tend to be structured around exclusive identities involving political myths about the existence of supra-personal entities or groups. These identities are portrayed as something under threat that is nonetheless worth preserving. An example is the Great Replacement Theory, which claims that white, Christian Europeans are being demographically and culturally replaced, usually by Muslim populations. This theory is, of course, not supported by quantitative evidence. However, proponents of this theory include prominent mainstream politicians (e.g., Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy, or Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister of Hungary) and people in extraordinary positions of power (e.g., businessman Elon Musk). Equally, a great proportion of the incidents involving considerable political violence (i.e., terror attacks such as the Christchurch Mosque shootings, or Anders Breivik’s attacks) occurring in recent years have been motivated by fears fuelled by this theory. This form of identity – conceived as a set of characteristics of a social group – involves a different, relational understanding implied by the desire for the former to 'remain the same'. In metaphysics, identity is conceived in two ways: qualitative (as a relation between two entities that have the same properties) and numerical (as a relation that an entity can only have with itself, usually conceived and examined as it is extended temporally). These issues come up in the context of the metaphysics of the self, as the question of personal identity over time. This asks what a necessary and sufficient condition is for a person at one point in time to be (numerically) identical with a person at another point in time – or what constitutes this identity. We invite abstracts from graduate students in philosophy and the social sciences that explore the ways in which right-wing ideology involves matters of identity. While interdisciplinary approaches are welcome, the aim will be to focus on the metaphysical commitments about identity these tend to involve. Conversely, can insights from metaphysics, especially but not limited to the question of personal identity (e.g., reductionism), be used to critique right-wing concerns, such as those involved by the great replacement theory? And on what grounds can we distinguish legitimate concerns that involve comparable identity relations (e.g., those informing anti-colonial struggles)? Participants will be offered up to 20 minutes to present their papers, followed by 10 minutes for discussion. Presentations will be in English. Bursaries will be awarded to help with travel costs (paid as an honorarium). Priority will be given to those who cannot rely on institutional support to cover these costs. Submission guidelines: Please submit an abstract of up to 400 words by 12 January 2025. Das Buch History and Legacy of Isotype zeichnet diese Geschichte nach und verweist auf ihre ungebrochene Aktualität wissenschaftliches Wissen in der Gesellschaft und im politischen Diskurs zu stärken. Invitation Policy bias in economic research and the epistemological problems of econometrics: Lessons for designing economic policy processes SUERF BAFFI Bocconi webinar Tuesday, January 14, 2025 Online, Webex, 3-4.30 pm A recent paper finds considerable policy bias in economic research. Jelveh, Kogut and Naidu (2024) show that partisanship is detectable across fields and within fields, even across those estimating the same theoretical parameter. This poses serious challenges to economic policy development. Models and their econometric estimation play an increasingly important role in modern economic and political life. From macroeconomic policy and financial regulation to public health and climate policy, models contribute to shaping policies. The generation of ever more data is likely to support the proliferation of models and econometrics. Yet, research resources in academia focus on the theoretical foundations of the underlying model and on the statistical methods of econometrics; much less attention is devoted to the epistemological challenges of the underlying concepts, the normative challenges of the everyday work with models and econometrics as well as the inevitable role of expert judgement. Yet, understanding these challenges would be crucial to design policy processes that effectively address potential policy biases on economic policy development and ensure the integrity of that process. This SUERF panel discussion discusses how serious the policy bias in economic research is and how it affects policy development. Furthermore, panellists will explain how that policy bias is possible even when rigorous mathematical /statistical methods are employed. Finally, the panel suggests design features of economic policy development processes that improve its integrity in the face of the policy bias in economic research. Project description: Some of the core fields of philosophy - including moral philosophy, value theory, and epistemology - are, at their heart, concerned with normative questions: questions about what is good or bad, right or wrong, justified or unjustified. These questions concern the content of judgements that human beings are constantly making and that structure our way of thinking, feeling, and acting. But while there is wide agreement in contemporary philosophy that normative judgements form a unified and important category of human thought, philosophers still struggle to understand what normativity actually is. One highly attractive hypothesis is that normativity can be analysed in terms of reasons - i.e. in terms of the factors that count in favour of or against actions or attitudes. The aim of REASONS F1RST is to systematically explore this Reasons-First Approach on a large scale and across various philosophical subdisciplines. Fostering multidisciplinary conversations between moral philosophy, epistemology, value theory, aesthetics, the philosophy of emotions, and related areas, the project will develop novel analyses of normative phenomena. It also seeks to address recent challenges to the Reasons-First Approach and to compare it to competing approaches. REASONS F1RST thus pursues a twofold objective: (i) to assess the merits and demerits of the Reasons-First Approach compared to alternative proposals, and (ii) to work out in detail how different normative phenomena - including values, obligations and rights, the justification of beliefs, as well as appropriateness norms for emotions - can be explained in terms of reasons. The work programme of REASONS F1RST will be carried out in four sub-projects: (1) Reasons and Value; (2) Reasons and Ought; (3) Reasons and Knowledge; and (4) Reasons and Fittingness. According to our present plans, one of the advertised positions is associated with sub-project (3), while the other is associated with sub-project (4). Bossert, Bernice Bovenkerk, Mark Ryan Symposium Description: Artificial intelligence (AI) holds the potential to dramatically impact the lives of domesticated, urban, and wild non-human animals (hereafter: animals), for good or bad (Singer and Fai Tse, 2023). AI-powered drones can take companion dogs for a walk, and animal robots can replace living companion animals or zoo animals (Bossert and Coeckelbergh, 2024). AI can provide alternatives to animal testing, for example, by predicting the toxicity of chemical compounds (Singer and Fai Tse, 2023). On the other hand, experiments with brain-computer interfaces can increase animal use (Coghlan and Parker, 2023). AI is used in self-driving cars, which may or may not be programmed to avoid animals on the road. Monitoring animals via AI-enabled trackers and drones can aid wildlife conservation but can also be abused by poachers (ibid.). AI-powered cameras for the scientific study and protection of wild animals can lead to animals changing their habits (ibid.). Finally, AI promises to make interspecies understanding and communication possible, e.g., with Alaskan humpback whales (McCowan et al., 2023). However, AI also raises ethical challenges. For example, speciesist bias in algorithms can either reinforce the popular image of animals as commodities and edible products, or it can paint an overly rosy picture of the way 'production animals' are housed (Hagendorff et al, 2023). Datafication in animal farming may lead to the further objectification of animals (Bos et al. 2018). It may lead us to conceive of animals as a 'batch of data'. Precision livestock farming (PLF) may also lead to alienation between farmers and animals and erode farmers' experiential knowledge. Farming systems that are run by AI harbour many health and welfare risks in case of malfunction. The use of AI in the case of urban or wild animals may have unintended consequences for animal behaviour and welfare. Trying to communicate with whales or other animals with AI can have detrimental effects on these animals' social structures and culture (Ryan and Bossert, 2024). During this symposium, we will discuss the ethical aspects of a wide range of AI applications in the context of animals. We invite talks that focus on specific applications of AI to animals and their ethical consequences and talks that deal with more theoretical issues around using AI for animals. Besides ethicists and philosophers, we invite scientists and engineers in AI design to join the symposium. The symposium relates to several topics central to the conference, but with animals as a central focus, as opposed to humans. The derivation indicator view says that all proofs stand in some relation to a derivation, i.e. a mechanically checkable syntactical objects following fixed rules, that would not have any gaps. For a long time this was a mere hope. There may have been proofs of concepts from early logicists but derivation never played a big role in mathematical practice. The modern computer might change this. Interactive and automated theorem provers promise to make the construction of a justification without any gaps feasible for complex mathematics. Is this promise justified? Will the future of mathematical practice shift to more formal mathematics? Should it? Outstanding Female Philosophers from the Lvov-Warsaw School Philosophy of Science Colloquium The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows. Date: 12/12/2024 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 2G Abstract: From today's perspective, one of the most significant 20th-century discoveries in Polish philosophy's history was the Lvov-Warsaw School's rediscovery. The turbulent history of Poland and the political events after the Second World War led this group's members, who were still living, to the conviction that science would forget them. However, thanks to the woman philosopher Izydora Dąmbska and her influence on her pupils, the memory of the Lvov-Warsaw School has survived. I would even say - that the Lvov-Warsaw School has been rediscovered. Although the Lvov-Warsaw School was founded at the end of the 19th century by Kazimierz Twardowski, to a large extent his female students have contributed to the survival of the memory of his legacy, not only in the immaterial sphere, but also in the form of artefacts, archives and documents. In addition to their merits in the struggle for the survival of memory, women at the Lvov-Warsaw School practised philosophy equally with men. At the turn of the 20th century, this was a phenomenon unprecedented in any school of philosophy. A critical analysis of the history of philosophy is a vital phenomenon. After all, people write histories, and several different factors influence them. Thus, it is the history of Polish philosophy which I have been studying for several years. In the case of the Lvov-Warsaw School, we are dealing with a phenomenon that has yet to be sufficiently described-namely, the number of active women in this formation. In this seminar, I am eager to present the potential impact of my research, conducted as part of my PhD at the University of Lodz in the Doctoral School of Humanities. I will also share the inspiration that led me to this topic. How has the issue of women in the Lvov-Warsaw School been addressed in the past, and what promising avenues are there for further exploration? My research is primarily a critical analysis of the history of philosophy and a comparative analysis of the state of Polish philosophy at that time. In telling the story of women associated with the Lvov-Warsaw School, I will also present my research methodology and the unique historical and social conditions that enabled women in Poland to climb the scientific Olympus. I will emphasize the need for philosophical reflection in women's history, as it is not just a reenactment and reminder of forgotten figures and their achievements, but a crucial aspect that adds depth and significance to our understanding of the past. In the current situation, in addition to multiplying research on women's history, we should also ask ourselves - how do we do it? To what end do we conduct such research, and what does it result in?

The duration of the position is one year, and an extension is scheduled for another two years based on a positive evaluation after the first year. This interdisciplinary PhD project is jointly supervised by Marcel Weil (technology assessment) and Rafaela Hillerbrand (philosophy of engineering and technology) and is part of the KLIREC graduate school (https://www.hs-pforzheim.de/forschung/institute/inec/studium_promotion/klir…). Batteries, as a versatile storage option for electricity, are seen as an enabling technology of the energy transition towards renewables, both for the mobility sector and for ensuring the electric grid's stability. At present, lithium-ion batteries are widely used, especially in the mobility and stationary application sectors. Lithium-ion batteries contain critical raw materials like e.g., cobalt, nickel, copper, and graphite, besides lithium. However, the extraction of these metals may have adverse social and environmental impacts. While the latter are addressed to some extent in sustainability assessments, there is not much work yet on the ethical aspects of extraction and usage, particularly regarding circular economy frameworks. This PhD project is meant to fill this research gap and connect quantitative environmental sustainability research with qualitative ethical research. A particular focus shall be placed on international justice aspects within energy ethics. We offer a 1-year contract with the possibility of an extension of another 2 years within KLIREC and affiliation with ITAS (Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis), KIT. You will participate in the graduate school training program and join a research group at ITAS. Würzburger Studierenden-Werkstatt für Philosophie Das Institut für Philosophie der Universität Würzburg lädt interessierte Philosophie-Studierende in fortgeschrittenen Semestern ein, ihre philosophischen Untersuchungen und Forschungen im Rahmen einer Studierenden-Werkstatt vorzustellen. Der Workshop bietet Studierenden der Philosophie die Möglichkeit, eigene Ideen vorzustellen, sich an einem philosophischen Fachvortrag zu versuchen und sich mit etablierten Forschenden im kollegialen Rahmen des Würzburger Instituts für Philosophie auszutauschen und zu vernetzen. Dies ermöglicht den Teilnehmenden, ausgiebige Rückmeldungen zu ihren Arbeiten von Würzburger Professor*innen und Mitarbeiter*innen zu erhalten und mit diesen in Dialog zu treten. Im Fokus steht die Einübung einer Praxis des gemeinsamen philosophischen Denkens. Many philosophers of this era characterize the preceding paradigm as mechanisticor materialist, in reference to the philosophical outlook, derived by science and presupposed by science, that suggests a specific view of the methods, aims, and standards of intelligibility in science and epistemology. Here, I will describe how this paradigm operates in the work of three representatives of philosophy in the twentieth century: Ernst Cassirer, Alfred North Whitehead, and Philipp Frank. These figures position themselves as overcoming mechanistic philosophy through an understanding of science as symbolic. I focus on how their broadly functionalist, semiotic views develop out of reflections on the methods of the physical sciences in the second half of the nineteenth century (particularly electromagnetic theory), and how this is taken up in their later work in considerations of the role of symbols in politics and culture more generally. All three, I argue, have a critical project in common, aimed at freedom from historically conditioned symbols. The primary tool they use in this project is narratives of the history of philosophy of science. In the case of Whitehead, my focus is primarily on two lecture series’, published respectively as Science and the Modern World in 1925, and Symbolism: its Meaning and Effect in 1927. My focus in Cassirer will be his application of symbolic forms to nationalism, and in the case of Frank, I will offer a reading of his symbolic view of science in service of a humanistic project “synthesizing” the sciences with other parts of human culture, without just latching onto evocative general terminology in the sciences (like matter, energy, etc.) to do so. This project moves to recognize the centrality of the concept of the symbol in twentieth century philosophy; its genesis, and its common place in the work of seemingly diverse philosophers, towards a different thematic emphasis in the history of analytic philosophy and the history of philosophy of science. 3pm: Christian Damböck (IVC): Fascism as Illogical Reasoning. Rudolf Carnap's Forgotten Approach In his now completely forgotten contribution to the Harvard Tercentenary Celebration in 1936, Rudolf Carnap outlines a theory of illogical reasoning that can be interpreted as a theory of fascist politics. While theories of fascism often see the loss of humanistic values as the primary problem, Carnap sees the values of humanism as natural components of the scientific world conception, so that anti-humanism and fascism can only arise as a consequence of the loss of the latter. According to Carnap, illogical thinking occurs in three forms: (a) political attitudes are disguised as facts or destiny, (b) inconsistent or logically misconstrued value systems are accepted, (c) insufficiently confirmed or empirically false premises are taken as a basis. Fascism arises from propaganda that spreads illogical thinking in society. I contextualize Carnap's 1936 approach to explain why it was not pursued further and why value-based theories of fascism continue to prevail today. On this basis, I also outline some consequences of a Carnapian understanding of fascism for contemporary politics.

The role of diagnosis in the scientific as well as therapeutic discourse requires a consideration of its practices as well as its theoretical foundations, combining empirical, analytical and normative approaches. This workshop aims to create an interdisciplinary scientific discussion in which the various facets of diagnosis form the leading motif. We invite social scientists, especially anthropologists and sociologists focusing on field research and critical discourse analysis, and philosophers, examining the foundations of psychiatric diagnosis with ethical and epistemological normative frameworks. A particularly relevant philosophical framework presents itself in the theory of hermeneutical injustice. This approach analyzes harm stemming from deficient interpretive resources, a category arguably applicable to psychiatric diagnosis. This closely relates to the fact that diagnosis can also be a process in which new empirical and identity qualities are conceptualized. The process is embedded in institutional, economic, and social conditions, the influence of which has a direct impact on an individual's experiences. Diagnosis is also a practice that actively shapes expert and non-expert discourses, and also creates a field for their mutual interaction. It provides an opportunity for new interpretations of oneself in expert discourse through the non-expert practice of self-diagnosis. In an era whendiagnosis and its language are penetrating social interpretative resources, new fields of scientific consideration are opening up for philosophy and the social sciences. Liebe Kolleg*innen! ich freue mich sehr, euch mitteilen zu können, dass dank der Unterstützung verschiedener Forschungsinstitute der Universität Wien ein interdisziplinäres Symposium zum Thema "Psychoanalyse-Recht-Religion. Zur Bedeutung und Aktualität von Pierre Legendres dogmatischer Anthropologie" stattfindet! Dies ist eine der seltenen Gelegenheiten, sich mit dem faszinierenden Denken des französischen Rechtshistorikers und Psychoanalytikers vertraut zu machen, das im deutschsprachigen Raum bislang noch unzureichend diskutiert wurde. Mit freundlichen Grüßen Kanau Kobayashi MA Institut für Philosophie ---------------------------------- Abstract: Im Jahr 2023 verstarb Pierre Legendre, einer der bedeutendsten Denker unserer Zeit. Seine Forschungsarbeit zeichnet sich insbesondere durch einen trans- und interdisziplinären Ansatz aus, der unterschiedliche Wissensgebiete miteinander in Verbindung bringt. Dazu zählen die Psychoanalyse, die Rechtsgeschichte und die Theologie bzw. Religionsgeschichte. Die Berücksichtigung dieser Spannungsfelder, in denen Legendre zufolge das Wissen über die Reproduktion der sprechenden Gattung Mensch aufbewahrt wird, führte ihn zu einer erneuerten Fokussierung der politisch- und sozialphilosophisch bedeutsamen Frage nach dem Verhältnis von menschlicher Existenz und Institution: Ist das Institutionelle für die menschliche Existenz etwas Äußerliches oder ist es ihr ein wesentlich zugehöriges Phänomen, ohne das sie selbst nicht sein könnte? Welcher Bedeutung kommt in dieser Hinsicht Legendres Begriff der „dogmatische Anthropologie“ zu? Diese Frage gewinnt in der heutigen Zeit zunehmend an Bedeutung, in der, wie Roberto Esposito treffend formuliert, konservative Institutionen und anti-institutionelle Praktiken jede politische Dialektik der Erneuerung zu verhindern scheinen. Obwohl die Relevanz seines Denkens für unsere Gegenwart mittlerweile als unbestritten gilt, befindet sich die Rezeption von Legends Werk im deutschsprachigen Raum noch im Anfangsstadium. Um die Erforschung des Werkes von Legendre weiter voranzutreiben und auch Kolleginnen und Kollegen auf sein Denken aufmerksam zu machen, orientiert sich das Symposium an folgenden leitenden Fragen: Was sind die theoretischen und ideengeschichtlichen Hintergründe seines Denkens? Wie und was ist unter dem Begriff der „dogmatischen Anthropologie“ zu verstehen und inwiefern kommt ihm eine herausragende Bedeutung zu, über das Verhältnis von Indivduum und Institution Auskunft zu geben? Anhand dieser Leitfragen zielt das Symposium darauf ab, die Relevanz und Aktualität von Legends Werk aus den Perspektiven von Recht, Religion und Psychoanalyse zu diskutieren. Damit soll nicht zuletzt sein Denken einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht werden.
