Dear VDP members, the Vienna Doctoral School together with the Vienna Doctoral School of Theology and Research on Religion, and the Research Center "Religion and Transformation in Contemporary Society" are organizing a workshop on how to organize academic events, such as conferences, symposia, or workshops with a focus on the humanities. Talk on mental health and well-being on 26.5.

Dear VDP members, The DocSchools VDSEE and CoBeNe are pleased to invite you to an upcoming session on mental health and well-being in academia, which will take place on Monday, 26 May 2025, at 16:00 via Zoom. Dr. Markus Boeckle, coach, psychotherapist, and Senior PostDoc at the Karl Landsteiner University for Health Sciences, will lead the session. This session explores the complex realities of well-being during the PhD journey. Drawing on current research and professional experience, Dr. Boeckle will highlight common challenges early career researchers face--from stress and isolation to unclear expectations and role conflicts--and offer tools for navigating them with more awareness, agency, and resilience. About the speaker: Markus Boeckle's work focuses on psychosocial support for researchers and developing digital interventions. His research interests include self-efficacy, future planning, and mental health in academic settings. He is a coach, supervisor, and psychotherapist with individuals and groups. Scientific practices began to be understood in a pluralistic, piecemeal fashion, shifting the focus from a monolithic conception of science to a multiplicity of approaches (cf. Galison & Stump 1996). Pluralism has since evolved into an active and explicit research program within the philosophy of science (cf. Ludwig & Ruby 2021). Very recently, the pluralist stance has materialized in forms like scientific perspectivism (cf. Giere 2006; Teller 2019; Massimi 2022; Kendig 2024) and pragmatist philosophy of science (cf. Price 2011; Andersen & Mitchell 2023; Chang 2022). At the HHU Summer School, we aim to foster a rich dialogue between pluralism, pragmatism, and perspectivism, anchored in their shared pluralistic foundations (see Price 2011 for a non-representational understanding that underlies both pragmatism and causal perspectivalism). In this context of P3, the role of scientific models as vehicles of representation (cf. Frigg & Nguyen 2021; 2022) and traditional conceptions of truth (cf. Andersen 2023) are reinterpreted through new philosophical lenses. By the same token, the representational means by which the representational function of models is achieved are irreducibly pluralistic. (See Suárez 2024's proposal for representational pluralism). Questions about the role of scientific instruments and the extent to which instruments are 'perspectival' and reflect a 'point of view' are becoming increasingly relevant (cf. Giere 2006; Crețu 2022 for a recent reappraisal). Invitation to Graduate Conference - From Minds to Movements: Foresight in Cognition and Activism (May 8–10, 2025)

Dear Colleagues, We warmly invite you to the graduate conference "From Minds to Movements: Foresight in Cognition and Activism", taking place from May 8 to May 10, 2025, at the University of Vienna. The conference will be held in a hybrid format, allowing both in-person and online participation. Information about registration and how to obtain the Zoom link can be found below. The first two days of the conference will be held at Aula am Campus Hof 1.11, featuring workshops on Conceptual Change and Climate Activism, alongside presentations by PhD and postdoctoral researchers in philosophy and cognitive science. On the third day, the conference will move to the Sky Lounge at Oskar-Morgenstern-Platz 1, focusing on further research presentations and concluding with a discussion on future research directions. The symposium will also coincide with a panel discussion on The Future of Knowledge, AI, and Climate Science, organised jointly with the Vienna Cognitive Science Hub. What form does the Measurement Problem take in relativistic quantum field theory (QFT), when both the measurement theory and the dynamical theory are relativistic? This question has recently become more tractable with the development of a number of measurement theories for QFT that, in contrast with the longstanding tradition in QFT, represent measurements as occurring in local spacetime regions. I will argue that the Measurement Problem takes a substantially different form in QFT than it does in NRQM. Two characteristic features of the Measurement Problem in NRQM do not carry over to the Measurement Problem in QFT. First, in QFT the Measurement Problem does not take the form of an apparent incompatibility between the post-measurement states prescribed by the dynamics and the state update rule. Second, the state update rules in the measurement theory for QFT do not describe an effective measurement collapse: the state update rules do not admit a literal interpretation as representing a physical, measurement-induced change of state that occurs in some region of spacetime. These differences in the form that the Measurement Problem takes in QFT carry implications for the interpretation of QFT. The Vienna Circle and the Austrian School have shaped the development of philosophical, scientific, and political debate in the 20th century. In the 21st century, logical empiricism has undergone extensive re-evaluation, while the Austrian School experiences another revival. Yet, despite numerous connections and interactions between the two movements, their relationship has captured surprisingly sparse attention in the historical and philosophical literature. If an account is provided at all, logical empiricists and Austrian economists are portrayed as philosophically, scientifically, and politically antithetical groups. Among the most frequently mentioned contrastive pairs of catchwords are empiricism vs apriorism, formal methods vs verbal reasoning, and socialism vs classical liberalism. Acknowledging the existence of disagreements between logical empiricism and the Austrian School, recent scholarship has challenged the received view of antithetical opposition by reconstructing hitherto neglected compatibilities and similarities between the two movements. This workshop aims to advance historical as well as systematic discussions on the relationship between logical empiricism and Austrian economics. Contributions that fruitfully inform contemporary debates in philosophy, methodology, politics, or the sciences are particularly welcome. Die gesellschaftliche Produktion ist kapitalistisch organisiert ebenso wie die Weise, wie in unserer Gesellschaft Waren verteilt werden. Betrifft uns Kapitalismus aber nicht auf eine viel grundlegendere Art? Bedingt er, wie wir als Individuen denken, fühlen, handeln und begehren? Formt er die Beziehungen, in denen wir mit anderen und unserer Umwelt stehen? Diese Fragen sollen im Rahmen der Tagung unter dem Schlagwort der spätkapitalistischen Subjektivierung in den Blick genommen werden. Diskutiert werden sie mithilfe der methodischen und begrifflichen Mittel der Kritischen Theorie und in einem interdisziplinären Austausch zwischen Philosophie, Soziologie und Psychologie. The workshop is organized under the auspices of, and funded by, the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy (VDP). THEME Explanations recur as a constant and central theme in philosophy: philosophers contend that in mathematics, proofs are favoured for their explanatory values; in the sciences, theories are selected according to explanatory virtues they exhibit; in metaphysics, explanatory relations direct our accounts of concepts and ontological priority; in philosophy more broadly, we offer and compare explanations for facets of reality in order to resolve conceptual problems. Date: 10/04/2025 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3A Abstract: Much philosophical attention has recently been paid to Conceptual Engineering - or, the intentional modification of concepts by philosophers in order to achieve epistemic, ethical, or political ends. The most controversial aspect of conceptual engineering are its aims, but there is also much debate over the mechanism by which the process could even be carried out. In this project, I will propose a mechanism derived from the work of Friedrich Waismann by which intentional conceptual amelioration can - and does - occur. I will then argue that this account of conceptual engineering solves a number of standing problems in the literature, but in doing so, places some key checks on the ambition of conceptual engineering as a project.

Even opponents of the doctrine often concende that, in retrospect, utilitarians were often right to oppose discriminatory laws and customs. The idea of progress has also been used by utilitarians as an argumentative resource against competing normative theories. Dear all, we are delighted to invite you to the next instalment of the APSE talks series, as well as to the accompanying reading circle prior to the talk. The talk will be given by Remco Heesen (LSE). When: Thursday, 10.04.2025, 15:00 - 17:00 Where: HS 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien) The Division of Cognitive Labour under Poisson Productivity When a community of academics faces a research problem and multiple methodological approaches to solving it, how much effort should they devote to each approach to maximise their chances of solving the problem and minimise the time to a solution? This problem is known as the division of cognitive labour (DCL). More specifically, Philip Kitcher, Michael Strevens, and Kevin Zollman have asked whether and to what extent academics’ expectations of credit for solving the problem can act as an invisible hand to produce an efficient DCL without a need for top-down planning. Here I revisit this question using a modelling framework (key ingredient: academic productivity follows a Poisson distribution) that has more empirical support than Kitcher’s, Strevens’, and Zollman’s, and is also more flexible in that it can be used to address broader questions about credit incentives. The somewhat surprising finding is that in this framework the DCL problem becomes essentially trivial. I’d like to discuss implications for how we think about the model and/or the DCL problem. KiC Information session for all PhD students on teaching at the Department

Dear VDP Researchers, the Director of Studies Philosophy (Studienprogrammleitung Philosophy) publishes a call for applications for "external" teaching in the department of Philosophy every year. The current SPL Michael Staudigl has informed about the respective procedures and opportunities for predocs / PhD students in one of our Pragmatic Academic events in January, this year. In the context of the current call for applications for the year 2025/26 Paulina Sliwa and Max Kölbel asked us to invite you to an information meeting about external teaching that is organised by the Cluster of Excellence Knowledge in Crisis. The meeting is open to all PhD students in the department and will take place on Tuesday 8 April from 14:00-15:00 in Room 3A, NiG. Date: 03/04/2025 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3A Abstract: There is a rather widespread consensus, among historians of philosophy, concerning the decline of Wittgenstein amid recent analytic philosophy. However, the exact import of such a decline, its chronological development, as well as its causes and several other features, are difficult to ascertain with the traditional methods of the history of philosophy. In this talk we apply a distant reading approach, and a variety of other quantitative methods, to provide a more reliable and accurate account of Wittgenstein's decline. We focus on a corpus consisting of the metadata of US PhD dissertations in philosophy from 1981 to 2010 (although other kinds of data are also taken into consideration), and we try to relate the topic of the dissertation to the success of the candidate in his/her subsequent academic career. The results of this analysis, corroborated by other evidence, allow us to put forth the more reliable and accurate account just hinted at, and at the same time to suggest - as a contribution to external history of philosophy - a plausible mechanism at the basis of the decline itself, notably a process driven by those who controlled the recruitment policies in the philosophy departments.
