In this talk, I aim to examine the birth, circulation, and normative power of the concept of nature, as well as its current crisis. How was the idea of nature and a natural order invented? To which events was this idea connected? How was it deployed across all levels of Modern experience to become the focal point of all major issues? Finally, how did nature become a political force that now reveals its limitations within the framework of the "new climatic regime"? These questions will be explored through the lens of several thinkers, primarily Whitehead, Deleuze, Stengers, and Latour. In eigener Sache Auf dem GAP-YouTube-Kanal ist vor wenigen Wochen eine neue Serie in der Reihe #erklärt gestartet. In den kurzen Videos dieser Reihe erläutern Philosoph:innen zentrale Begriffe, Probleme, Gedankenexperimente, Thesen oder Theorien. Die aktuelle Produktionsrunde entstand in Berlin und in einem Pop-up-Studio auf dem GAP.12-Kongress. Über 15 Videos mit Beitragenden aus ganz Deutschland sind bereits fertiggestellt, weitere folgen. Eine Besonderheit der aktuellen Produktion ist, dass es sich um eine Kollaboration mit dem Bildersturm-Projekt [2] handelt, das die Sichtbarkeit von Frauen in der Philosophie stärkt. Towards a social epistemology of Artificial Intelligence Artificial intelligence (AI) is currently all the rage in most sciences and medical practice. Deep neural networks and other AI systems are successfully utilized to diagnose diseases from medical data, make predictions, and support treatment planning. Most of its tasks are epistemic, i.e., AI is used to gain knowledge or support inquiry and decision-making. As AI applications learn on the spot and become increasingly autonomous, it seems appropriate to consider them as _epistemic agents_. This opens up a new perspective on AI applications: They become partners with which humans can interact in similar ways as with other humans. The idea that our inquiries are social - that they involve several humans and take place in specific "information ecosystems" - is crucial for _social epistemology_, a young and thriving subfield of epistemology. It is thus no surprise that scholars have begun to assess the use of AI in social epistemological terms. This workshop brings together philosophers from the philosophy of AI and social epistemology to explore the current state of thinking about AI as a social, epistemic agent. The aim of the workshop is to find out how AI applications and their work can be understood using concepts and insights from social epistemology. A special focus is on applications from medicine. Questions to be addressed include, but are not limited to: * Are current AI applications really epistemic agents or rather mere tools? * Which epistemic roles can current AI tools take in inquiry? * Which insights and concepts from social epistemology can be transferred to the use of AI tools in medicine? * Can, and should, some AI tools be treated as epistemic authorities? * Which collaborative settings are recommendable for AI use in medicine? * What consequences does the social epistemology of AI tools have for the demands of explainability? We invite scholars interested in contributing their research to this workshop to submit an extended abstract of 500-1000 words and a short abstract of about 150 words. Denn tatsächlich lässt sich zeigen, dass schon Babys und Kleinstkinder, lange bevor sie sprachfähig sind, sich als resonanzfähig und -bedürftig erweisen. Sie reagieren auf Stimme und Berührung, und im Blickwechsel entsteht die Vorahnung eines Subjekts bzw. ein Selbstgefühl. Und auch wenn wir im Alter, etwa aufgrund von Demenz, unsere Sprach- und Vernunftfähigkeit verlieren, bleiben wir Resonanzwesen: Deshalb arbeiten Psychologen mit Demenzkranken oft mittels Musik. Was aber sind die Grenzen der Resonanz in unserem Weltverhältnis: Wo sind wir gezwungen, Resonanz bewusst zu unterbrechen - etwa bei der wissenschaftlichen Analyse oder im Operationssaal - wo verlaufen ihre politischen und zwischenmenschlichen Grenzen? Seeking collaborators for organizing a VDP Summer School on "Science, Academic Freedom & Democracy"

Dear colleagues, when Raphael recently sent out the Call for Organizers for the VDP Summer School 2026 again (see below), the idea crossed my mind that it would be nice to organize something on the topic of "Science, Academic Freedom & Democracy". I am currently looking for colleagues from the VDP who would like to join and work as a team towards such a proposal. In case you are interested to take part in such an endeavour, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. In my mind, there are at least three good reasons why "Science, Academic Freedom & Democracy" could be an interesting topic for a summer school: (1) It seems particularly timely considering the ongoing authoritarian assault on science and the academy in the United States and other countries. (2) It allows to bring together instructors and participants from different areas of philosophy (philosophy of science, political philosophy, epistemology, environmental ethics, ...) as well as different disciplines (philosophy, political science, STS, history of science, ...). (3) Internationally renowned guests could be brought together with people from Vienna, for there is already a lot of expertise on the topic present at our university (including the departments of philosophy, STS, political science, and history of science) as well as other academic institutions within the city (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Central European University, ...). There is no lack of possible ways in which the topic could be broken down, such that it allows people from different areas of philosophy to work together. To name just a few examples off the top of my head: -- Authoritarian assaults on science, past and present -- The nature and value of academic freedom within democracy -- Science denialism and contestation of expertise -- Academic activism and civil disobedience -- Democracy and climate change -- Science and Politics in the Vienna Circle -- ... Again, please do not hesitate to get in touch in case you would like to work on these or other related topics! A Book Presentation on _Hermaphrodite Logic_ This workshop will showcase the key arguments made by Juliana Gleeson's new book _Hermaphrodite Logic_ (published June 2025): 1) That intersex advocacy followed on rapidly from intersex people meeting one (on and offline) another in the early 1990s. 2) That this new intersex movement developed in conjunction with feminist research, offering a moment of self-consciousness that was spoken to by intersex advocacy's rhetoric, and wit ("90s edgy"). 3) That their protests from 1996 to the present served as a revelation, which challenged professional authority (specifically claims to clinical "management"), and objectivity, and rewrote the history of sex (in ways still being processed today). However you want to describe the book, it should ultimately be indisputable that _Against Method_ is undoubtedly a classic of modern philosophy of science. Such a book, which was seen as an event in its time and provoked reactions far beyond the scientific community, is more than that: It is a watershed in modern philosophy that still leads to fierce debates about the nature of knowledge, the practice of the scientific community and the theory of knowledge. Since _Against Method_, Feyerabend has devoted much of his career to arguing that science as practiced cannot be described, let alone regulated, by any coherent methodology, whether understood historically, as in Thomas Kuhn's use of paradigms, or epistemologically, as in classical positivism and its offspring. 50 years after the publication of _Against Method_, the conference aims to capture the current significance of this book in modern science. Todestag des französischen Philosophen Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995). Aim In the last decades, several initiatives have dealt with developing ontologies for health, as witnessed by many of the resources provided by the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology (OBO) Foundry. Recently, attention has also been given to modeling sustainability issues, which resulted in ontologies like Sustainability Core Ontology (SCO) [3], Sustainable Development Goals Interface Ontology (SDGIO) [4], Sustainable Met Systems Ontology (SuMSO) [5], and Sustainable Development and Climate (SDC) Ontology [6]. It is imperative to enhance interconnectedness among these ontologies and related applications. In particular, it will be important to communicate across different ontology communities to adequately capture the intrinsic connections between health and sustainability. This workshop aims at promoting discussions in this direction, focusing on waste, especially food and plastic waste, as a starting use case. The choice of this use case is motivated by the intrinsic relevance that this theme holds both in terms of human health and food systems sustainability. While debates on economic justice often occur within specific political camps, the Dortmund Disputes aim to foster discussion across political boundaries by bringing together scholars with diverse outlooks--liberal egalitarian, libertarian, socialist, conservative, or otherwise--who share the goal of advancing our understanding of economic justice. Following the successful first installment in 2025 [6], which featured Miranda Fleischer and Nicholas Vrousalis, the second installment will take place on June 25-26, 2026. The keynote speakers are Chiara Cordelli and Bas van der Vossen. Chiara Cordelli, Professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago, works on social and political philosophy, especially political economy and democratic theory. She is the author of _The Privatized State_ (2020), a Kantian critique of privatization that develops a democratic theory of public administration. Bas van der Vossen, Professor in the Smith Institute for Political Economy and Philosophy and the Philosophy Department at Chapman University, works on political philosophy, with a focus on political economy, global justice, and property rights. His books include _In Defense of Openness_ (2018) and _Debating Humanitarian Intervention_ (2017). We invite scholars to apply with an abstract of around 500 words for a 40-minute talk. Call for Papers – Call for Contributions Konferenz: „Denkfiguren von Individuum und Masse“ 6.–7. Februar 2026, Universität Wien Von Revolutionär*innen geliebt, von Liberalen gefürchtet, von Kulturkritiker*innen bemitleidet – die Masse bleibt eine Provokation. Sie gilt als politische Kraft, die ebenso gefürchtet wie als Hoffnungsträgerin beschworen wird. Dem gegenüber steht das Ideal des autonomen Subjekts, das philosophische, politische und kulturelle Debatten bis heute prägt. Zunehmend rückt dabei die Frage in den Fokus, unter welchen Bedingungen Selbstbestimmung möglich ist und welche Grenzen ihr gesetzt sind. Daraus ergeben sich weiterführende Überlegungen: – Wie lässt sich die Beziehung zwischen Individuum und Masse philosophisch denken – als Antagonismus, Wechselwirkung oder dialektische Einheit? – Wie wird das Verhältnis des Einzelnen zu kollektiven Ordnungen – etwa Nation, Klasse, Religion oder Geschlecht – im philosophischen Denken konzipiert, gerechtfertigt oder kritisiert? – Worin unterscheiden sich neue (digitale) Massen von klassischen (physischen)? Die interdisziplinäre Konferenz widmet sich diesen Fragen aus historischen und systematischen Perspektiven. Zur Diskussion stehen Modelle sozialen Zusammenhangs, ethische Konzepte des Einzelnen und ideologiekritische Reflexionen über das „Wir“ – unter anderem ausgehend von (dem kleinen) Otto Bauer, Albert Camus, und Simone Weil. Keynote-Speaker: Dr. Markus Brunner (psychoanalytische Sozialpsychologie) Dr.in Stephanie Graf (politische Philosophie & kritische Theorie) Dr. Jonas Oßwald (Poststrukturalismus & politische Philosophie) Eingeladen sind Beiträge aus der (Rechts-)Philosophie, den Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften, der Geschichtswissenschaft sowie angrenzenden Disziplinen.
