[Reminder] CFA - VDP Writing Retreat at Stift Zwettl (July 7–12, 2025)

Call for Applications: VDP Writing Retreat at Stift Zwettl (July 7–12, 2025) The VDP Writing Retreat will take place for the first time from Monday 7 July to Saturday 12 July 2025 in the serene Stift Zwettl (Lower Austria). The retreat will provide a setting for doctoral candidates in philosophy to dedicate themselves to their dissertation in a peaceful, distraction-free environment. It offers an opportunity to make progress on their work in a structured and supportive peer environment. During the retreat, participants will follow a program carefully designed to support the writing process. The program includes 4-5 writing sessions per day (1 to 1.5 hours each), providing structured blocks of uninterrupted time for focused work, as well as writing exercises to stimulate creativity and overcome potential writing blocks. Additionally, there will be writing circles where participants can share their progress, give and receive feedback and engage in peer support. Overview: * Dates: Monday, July 7 – Saturday, July 12, 2025 * Location: Stift Zwettl, Lower Austria * Expenses covered by the VDP: * Accommodation (mostly shared rooms for two people) * Full board (including breakfast, lunch, and dinner) - drinks are not provided * Travel costs Eligibility Criteria: * You are a member of the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy. * You have passed the FÖP, signed your Dissertation Agreement and have submitted your Annual Reports (on time or until the Writing Retreat). PhDs für Fokusgruppen zum univie Website Launch - PhDs for focus groups for the univie website launch

Liebe Alle, wie ihr alle wisst, steht die Uni Wien 2025 vor einem großen Website-Relaunch. Um sich die Perspektive von Studierenden reinzuholen, werden Fokusgruppen mit BA und MA Studierende und auch Fokusgruppen mit PhDs organisiert (DLE Kommunikation in Kooperation mit unserer und anderer DLEs). Ziel ist es mittels dem Input aus den Fokusgruppen spezifisch Websites rund um alle Fragestellungen vor, während und nach dem Zulassungsprozess bestmöglich neu zu gestalten. Wir sind dabei Personen für diese Fokusgruppen zu rekrutieren; leider hatten wir auf eine Massmailer Aussendung (an ca. 500 zugelassenen PhDs im ersten Semester) bis dato nur eine Anmeldung!!! Wir brauchen aber ca. insgesamt 30 Personen (idealerweise im ersten Semester mit einer Mischung aus Finanzierten und Internationals). Ich wäre euch sehr dankbar, wenn ihr uns unterstützen könntet, PhDs für die Fokusgruppen zu rekrutieren. Aus unserer Erfahrung sagen Leute zu, wenn sie persönlich angesprochen werden (und nicht mittels einer Aussendung). Hier habt ihr mittlerweile den Kontakt zu den PhDs und wenn theoretisch jede Schule 2 Personen rekrutiert, hätten wir schon genug Personen… Es gibt eine Aufwandsentschädigung für die Teilnehmer*innen von 30 Euro, die Fokusgruppen finden in Englisch an folgenden Terminen in der Berggasse 7, SR1 statt. 4. Zwei Mitglieder der AG sind auch Mitglieder im „Quality Circle Philosophie" des SMC, der unter anderem einen Leitfaden für Journalist:innen entwickelt, welcher helfen soll, philosophische Expertise und hochwertige Fachpublikationen besser zu identifizieren. Für dieses Projekt wurde eine Umfrage erstellt, in der von akademisch Philosophierenden anonym Einschätzungen zu Expertise und Publikationsqualität abgefragt werden. Der Arbeitsbereich ist u.a. für die Einführung in die Theoretische Philosophie und die Einführung in die Logik verantwortlich. _Ihre Aufgaben_ - Lehre im Umfang von z. Zt. 16 LVS in den Modulen der Theoretischen Philosophie innerhalb des BA-Studienganges sowie der MEd- und MA-Studiengänge, - die Unterstützung der Systemakkreditierung für das Institut, also u.a. KALENDERWOCHE 2025 Liebe Mitglieder, viele von uns sind als Autorin oder als Herausgeber an Büchern beteiligt, die in der WBG Darmstadt (Wissenschaftlichen Buchgesellschaft) erschienen sind, die bedauerlicherweise Insolvenz anmelden musste. Im Rahmen des Insolvenzverfahrens der Wissenschaftlichen Buchgesellschaft hat die Insolvenzverwalterin die Rechte an den meisten in diesem Verlag erschienenen Werken an die Urheber:innen zurückgegeben. Der Fachinformationsdienst Philosophie (FID Philosophie), dessen Aufbau an der Universität Köln von der DFG gefördert wird, bietet nun allen ehemaligen WBG-Autor:innen und Herausgeber:innen an, Ihren Büchern auf www.philportal.de [1] kostenlos ein dauerhaft gesichertes neues Zuhause zu geben, das allen daran Interessierten den kostenfreien Zugang (open access) zu allen ehemals von der WBG veröffentlichten Werken in Form von pdf-Dateien ermöglichen wird, deren Urheber:innen dies wünschen. Summer School Call for Applications (Deadline: February 15, 2025) 23rd univie: summer school Scientific World Conceptions (USS-SWC) The History and Epistemology of Econometrics Vienna, July 7-11, 2025 https://summerschool-ivc.univie.ac.at/ Course Description Models and their econometric estimation play an increasingly important role in modern economic and political life. From macroeconomic policy and financial regulation to public health and climate policy, models contribute to shaping policies. The generation of ever more data is likely to support the proliferation of models and econometrics. Research resources in academia focus on the theoretical foundations of the underlying model and on the statistical methods of econometrics; much less attention is devoted to the epistemological challenges of the underlying concepts, the normative challenges of the everyday work with econometrics, and the application of its results in policy decisions and evaluation. The objective of this program is to increase attention amongst philosophers of science, academic economists, and empirical economists in policy institutions (eg, central banks) to these issues. The course is also structured around a particular point of view namely, that economics is a science of models and that most of the main features of econometrics relate generally to the role of models in science. Topics will be selected reflecting participants interests and may include: * History of econometrics to frame the philosophical issues to be discussed in the course * The Vienna Circle and econometrics * Values and Ethical Pitfalls in econometric research * Key philosophical issues of how models relate to the world and how they relate to each other * Data: observation, classification, and measurement of economic variables from a modeling point of view * Conceptual issues related to modeling randomness * The identification problem: how possibly, if at all possible, to map descriptive relations onto theoretical variables? * Issues related to optional stopping, search methodologies, and the proper interpretation of results obtained through search * Different approaches to the nature of causation and different strategies of causal inference * The conceptual basis of graphical causal modeling and controlled, natural, and field experiments * The conceptual issues surrounding the problem of model uncertainty, as well as some of the strategies economists use to address it Main Lecturers: Kevin D. Hoover (Duke University) Kevin D. Hoover is Professor of Economics and Philosophy and Senior Fellow of the Center for the History of Political Economy at Duke University. He is the editor of the journal History of Political Economy and a past editor of the Journal of Economic Methodology. His current research addresses causality, causal inference in economics, the history of macroeconomics, philosophical issues related to the microfoundations of macroeconomics, and the engagement with economics of the American pragmatist philosopher Charles. S. Peirce. He is the author of The New Classical Macroeconomics, the Methodology of Empirical Macroeconomics, Causality in Macroeconomics, Applied Intermediate Macroeconomics, as well as many articles in monetary and macroeconomics, the history of economics, the philosophy of economics, and applied econometrics. Jennifer Jhun (Duke University) Jennifer Jhun is an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department at Duke University, as well as a Senior Fellow of the Center for the History of Political Economy. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh. Her main research interests are in the philosophy of science, especially philosophy of economics, but also in issues in other areas, such as psychology and physics. The 1st day of the conference will focus on theory, covering empirical and philosophical research on cognition and its interpretations. The 2nd day will focus on various political, social and epistemic issues considered through the lens of empirical research. On the 3rd day, the conference will be centered around future directions of research in cognitive science, and its broader implications, based on the work presented during the first two days. The conference will coincide with the Cognitive Science Hub’s Annual Lecture which will take place in the Großer Festsaal on one of the two nights of the symposium. The participants of the conference will also be invited to attend the lecture and the proceeding reception. Instructors: Justin Broackes (Brown), Cathy Mason (CEU), Silvia Panizza (UCD/UPSE), Rachael Wiseman (Liverpool) Dates: July 14th-18th, 2025 Deadline for application: March 30th, 2025 Location: Neues Institutsgebäude (NIG), Universitätstrasse 7, 1010 Wien Overview of the Topic Although Iris Murdoch is still best known for her novels, her philosophical work is finally beginning to receive the recognition that it deserves. An Oxford philosopher, educated during the Second World War and later employed there as a lecturer, Murdoch’s philosophy marks a significant departure from the dominant analytic tradition of her place and time: a return to a philosophy deeply attuned to the human condition and to metaphysical thinking. Murdoch’s ideas began to develop with a critique of the prevailing approaches to language and thought, later evolving into a novel conception of ethics. Engaged with both analytic and continental traditions, she proposed vision as the basic category of evaluation and freedom as the ability to see the world rightly, rather than as detachment from it. As opposed to the amoral view of metaphysics, she sought to reanimate the concept of a world that finds meaning through “the Good”. She writes in dialogue with a diverse range of philosophers, including Plato, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Wittgenstein, Heidegger, French existentialists, and Derrida, among others, and she has had a strong influence on some of today’s best-known philosophers, including Cora Diamond, John McDowell, Martha Nussbaum, and Charles Taylor. The summer school aims to bring together promising young philosophers with some of the leading experts on Murdoch’s philosophical work. Participants will have the chance to engage with her major themes, uncover less-explored aspects of her work, and contribute to the ongoing discussion of her ideas with their own research. Application & Fees We welcome applications from PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and advanced MA students in philosophy and related disciplines. GAP Sondermail: Projekt zur Sichtbarkeit von Frauen

Liebe PhilosophINNEN*, ich arbeite an einem Projekt zur Sichtbarkeit von Frauen* in der Philosophie und produziere dafür die #erklärt-Videos für den GAP-YouTube-Kanal. Die Idee der Reihe ist: * Eine Philosophin* erklärt in etwa fünf Minuten einen Begriff, ein Gedankenexperiment, ein Problem, gibt einen ersten Einstieg in eine Debatte, etc. Es soll aber kein eigenes, kontroverses Material präsentiert werden, sondern eben wirklich etwas erklärt werden, das weitgehend akzeptiert, der Standard-View, etc. ist. Die Videos werden auch auf PhilPublica [1] geteilt. * Mit dem Projekt sprechen wir zunächst bewusst PhilosophINNEN* an. Es geht auch darum, Frauen* in der Philosophie sichtbarer zu machen, da bei vielen Laien noch das Bild des "alten, weißen, männlichen Philosophen" vorherrscht. Insbesondere Journalist:innen sollen so Anreize bekommen PhilosophINNEN* einzuladen und SchülerINNEN* dadurch ermutigt werden, dass Philosophie auch "etwas für sie sein kann". * Idealerweise richten sich die Themen hin und wieder nach den Philosophie-Lehrplänen aus, um Material zu generieren, das im Schulunterricht eingesetzt werden kann. Es gibt bereits ein Video mit Inga Bones zum Sorites-Paradox [2], das das Format illustriert. Ein Video mit mir selbst zu Fake News ist in Arbeit, Videos mit Sanja Dembić (Krankheit und psychische Störung) und Eva Weber-Guskar (KI und Emotionserkennung) folgen. Gern würde ich weitere PhilosophINNEN* für die Videoproduktion gewinnen. Wenn Sie sich vorstellen können, ein Video beizusteuern, freue ich mich über Nachricht. Was heißt das für Sie? Wenn Sie mitmachen, würde ich gerne jeweils einen Termin für die Skript-Einreichung (ca. 5min./ ca. 700 Wörter) und für den Videodreh (max. 60min. Drehzeit) vereinbaren. * Das Skript soll Ihnen möglichst wenig Arbeit bereiten. Sie dürfen gern das Thema wählen, das Ihnen am leichtesten fällt. Wenn Sie nur wenig Zeit haben, beschränken Sie sich gerne auf eine Stunde, in der Sie das gewünschte Thema in Stichpunkten strukturieren und anfangen auszuformulieren. Die Redaktion ist bei der Ausformulierung des Textes gern behilflich. Stellen Sie sich als Zuhörer:in eine interessierte Philosophie-Anfänger:in vor. * Sie müssen das Skript nicht auswendig lernen, wir werden den Text prompten, so dass Sie ihn ablesen können. * Die Redaktion übernimmt die vollständige Post-Production. Zur Aufnahme gibt es 3 Optionen: 1. Wir nehmen in unserem Studio in Berlin auf, wenn Sie einmal in Berlin sind. 2. Wir nehmen im Laufe der GAP.12 (8.9.-11.9.25; HHU Düsseldorf) auf, wo wir ein temporäres Studio aufbauen werden. 3. Wir geben Ihnen vorher ein Briefing für die Eigenproduktion und Sie nehmen bei sich auf. (Das hat bspw. Inga Bones gemacht, die dazu gern ihr Wissen teilt.) Call for Applications: VDP Writing Retreat at Stift Zwettl (July 7–12, 2025) The VDP Writing Retreat will take place for the first time from Monday 7 July to Saturday 12 July 2025 in the serene Stift Zwettl (Lower Austria). The retreat will provide a setting for doctoral candidates in philosophy to dedicate themselves to their dissertation in a peaceful, distraction-free environment. It offers an opportunity to make progress on their work in a structured and supportive peer environment. During the retreat, participants will follow a program carefully designed to support the writing process. The program includes 4-5 writing sessions per day (1 to 1.5 hours each), providing structured blocks of uninterrupted time for focused work, as well as writing exercises to stimulate creativity and overcome potential writing blocks. Additionally, there will be writing circles where participants can share their progress, give and receive feedback and engage in peer support. Overview: * Dates: Monday, July 7 – Saturday, July 12, 2025 * Location: Stift Zwettl, Lower Austria * Expenses covered by the VDP: * Accommodation (mostly shared rooms for two people) * Full board (including breakfast, lunch, and dinner) - drinks are not provided * Travel costs Eligibility Criteria: * You are a member of the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy. * You have passed the FÖP, signed your Dissertation Agreement and have submitted your Annual Reports (on time or until the Writing Retreat). The ontological problem is based on assumptions about the nature of the social reality in which we act. Does this reality allow for a connection between the past and future based on human action? The pragmatic problem has to do with how our projects change because we act as part of the world, observe how we and others act, and make predictions about future states based on that observation. The common denominator of all problems is that something that is of our making cannot be independent of us. Through the lens of economic philosophy, the aim of this call for papers is to explore how theories or approaches in disciplines such as economics, philosophy, or ethics have dealt with the three problems mentioned above. Within this tradition, many philosophers held that, among animals, only humans possess intellect and will--the higher cognitive and conative powers--which align them with even nobler beings, such as angels and God. This seemingly straightforward characterization of intellectual faculties raises profound questions that have been repeatedly explored and debated throughout Western philosophy. Key questions include: (1) Are these two intellectual faculties genuine entities or merely constructs? (2) What is the nature of these faculties, and what are their capabilities and limitations? (3) How do these faculties interact? Does the intellect govern the will, or does the will govern the intellect? (4) In what ways do these faculties relate to discussions of human freedom and morality, and how do they feature in anthropology and science? Title: *From Pandoras Box to Pandoras Hope: Opening the Lid on Transdisciplinary Work in Public Health* Date: Thursday, January 30th 2025 Reading Circle: 1pm - 3pm Talk: 3pm - 5 pm Location: Room 3A, NIG Abstract of the talk (3-5 PM): Climate change, armed conflicts, rising inequities, pandemics, and the displacement of large population groups constitute some of the most pressing current concerns for the discipline of Public Health. These complex issues require intersectional analyses and solutions—and a turn to transdisciplinary research. This need is commonly voiced in Public Health literature and increasingly enacted through funding calls and commissions. In this talk, I want to show how the over-reliance on biomedical knowledge and its accompanying reductionism has left Public Health not only “de-socialized,” but current attempts to “add in” social science knowledge—as one pathway for transdisciplinarity—often fall short of the promise to transcend disciplinary boundaries and create more suitable types of knowledge. Starting with the work of John Ryle, Julius Tandler, and Andrija Stampar, I will provide a short overview of the historical development of Public Health and its separation from the field of Social Medicine. Using the examples of Michael Marmot and Camara Phyllis Jones on the "Social Determinants of Health," I will then present the changes in the field in its move towards structural explanations of health inequalities. Finally, I end on the work of Emily Yates-Doerr and her critique of the pervasive “determinants model,” showcasing the potential, affordances, and demands of true transdisciplinarity in Public Health today.
