Dear all,
This is a kind reminder for tomorrow's talk of the PACE/KiC
Metaphilosophical Talk Series by
Amie Thomasson, Dartmouth College
Title: Starting a step back: Functional Pluralism and the Work of
Metaphysics
Date: March 27th, 2025 (Thursday)
Time: 16:45-18:15
Location: Hörsaal 50, Hauptgebäude (2.Stock, Stiege 8) -
Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien
Abstract:
Metaphysics traditionally answers questions such as “Are there
properties, universals, numbers, composite artifacts, fictional
characters…?’ ‘(If so), what are they like? How are they related to
minds, physical objects, etc.? Does ‘positing’ these things add
explanatory power to our theories?’… In this paper I will argue that we
should begin our questioning back a step, and begin by asking: “How does
talk of properties, numbers, ... enter language, and what functions does
it serve?” For doing so (I will argue) enables us to reevaluate many
classic metaphysical debates, to reassess prominent criteria used in
metaphysics, and to redirect metaphysics to more fruitful pursuits.
We look forward to seeing you!
Best wishes,

(3) CALL FOR PAPERS (Hannover, Deadline: 15.05.2025)
Student Conference: Science and Philosophy - Shared History, Diverging
Paths?
We are pleased to announce the student conference _Science and
Philosophy - Shared History, Diverging Paths?,_ which will take place on
_25-26 July 2025_ at _Leibniz University Hannover. _
We invite _Bachelor's and Master's students_ to submit their abstracts.
Participation in the conference is free for everyone and _some financial
support is available for international participants._ Please find the
full call for abstracts and more information in _our website [2]_. Feel
free to contact us at _team(a)sciphihan.de_ with any questions.
Description:
The question of the relationship between philosophy and science is as
old as the respective practices themselves. In recent debates, however,
it may seem as if both have grown out of sync, talking past each other,
often with little or no respect for each other's realm and method, their
arguments and positions. Our conference focuses on three main themes to
address this gap:
_I. HISTORICAL AND COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS_
We will examine _the relationship between philosophy and (the)
science(s)_, their emergence, differing methods, and potential decline,
_across different historical periods_, including, but not limited, to
the _Western canon_ from ancient to contemporary philosophy.
Participants who are interested in _non-Western traditions_ (such as
Islamicate or Buddhist philosophy) may submit a paper that does not
correspond to the periodisation mentioned above.
_II. PHILOSOPHY OF THE SCIENCES_
In this section we address key thematic areas in _contemporary
philosophy of scientific fields_, e.g. philosophy of biology, philosophy
of physics, philosophy of the social sciences. These contributions
should focus on the relationship between philosophy and one defined
scientific field, and/or on the different methodologies and
characteristics of the philosophy of the hard sciences vs the philosophy
of the soft sciences.
_III. META-REFLECTION OF THE RELATIONSHIP OF PHILOSOPHY AND SCIENCE_
explore the respective _roles, boundaries, and evolving relationship
between philosophy and science_, as well as emerging intersections
between them.
Organisers: Johannes Baer, Anni Bukowski, Seung Hoon Hahm, Amir Latifi,
Kristina Malzahn, and Paulina Oppermann

Secondary Qualities and the Epistemology of Perception
Workshop of the DFG Emmy-Noether Project 'A Sensible World'
_Secondary Qualities and the Epistemology of Perception_
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 10-11 April 2025
The workshop aims to discuss the relationship between theories of
secondary qualities and the epistemology of perception, both
historically (with the help of figures from the phenomenological
tradition and early analytic philosophy) and theoretically. It is based
on the idea that different accounts of secondary qualities are proper to
create different epistemological problems concerning perception. In
particular, eliminativists about colors, sounds, etc., have to explain
to what extent our perception of physical reality is still veridical,
while naive realists have to explain how our naive beliefs can be
compatible with the conclusions of the natural sciences, especially
physics, whose worldview includes nothing like colors, sounds, etc. as
given to us in ordinary experience.

(6) VERANSTALTUNGSANKÜNDIGUNG (Hannover, 25-27.02.2026, Submission
Deadline: 01.06.2025)
Phil-Econ-Model Lab, University of Hanover, 25-27 Feb 2026
Dear fellow economists and philosophers of economics,
We are pleased to invite you to our Phil-Econ-Model Lab (PEM-Lab), a
workshop taking place from 25-27 February 2026 at the University of
Hanover, Germany. With this workshop exclusively for early career
scholars, we offer a venue for cutting-edge research at the interface of
(a) philosophy of economics and (b) values in science debates. Namely,
we want to investigate in-how-far non-epistemic value judgements enter
the modelling process in economic models currently important in policy
design.
We aim to create a unique collaborative environment aside from the
beaten paths of conference sessions: rather than merely presenting
worked-out proposals and finished papers, we want to think together
about novel ideas and shape joint future projects in real-time. Thus,
the PEM-Lab will consist of two distinct phases: First, a set of online
reading group sessions to discuss the relevant literature in connection
to our own research ideas taking place in January and February 2026.
Here, we get to know each other and each other's work. Second, an
in-person meeting in Hanover (Germany) at the end of February 2026 to
deep-dive into debates where we have left off. The aim here is to foster
international collaboration. Please find more information about the
PEM-Lab's subject matter, structure, dates and other details here [4].
We encourage submissions from all early PhD students who are working on
the nexus of values in science and models in economics regardless of the
disciplinary affiliation. We especially encourage applications from PhD
students from non-European and North American universities and ask for
circulation in relevant communities if you happen to know some. We will
assist attendees with visa applications, accommodation and are securing
funding to provide travel grants for scholars without sufficient
institutional means.
_Submission and Deadline_
Please prepare the following documents and submit your application
through the application form [5]:
1. A letter of motivation (max 800 words) including a brief summary
of your previous academic work and a concise statement of what you want
to learn and work on during the workshop. Note: this should not be a
fleshed-out research proposal, novel and conceptual ideas are welcome!
2. A CV
Submission Deadline: 1 June 2025
Decisions communicated by: 1 July 2025
Please visit the project's web page for more details regarding the
selection process.
_Date and Location_
[Online] Informal Get-together: December 2025
[Online] Reading group and presentation sessions: 07 January 2026, 21
January 2026, 04 February 2026 and 18 February 2026

Dear all,
we warmly invite you to the next APSE (Applied Philosophy of Science and
Epistemology) Reading Circle. The talk will be held by Natalie Alana
Ashton (University of Sterling).
When: Thursday, 27.3.2025, 15:00 - 17:00
Where: HS 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien)
Creating a Strong Foundation for Neurodiverse Epistemology
Autistic people have had unprecedented success building effective
epistemic communities online. A detailed analysis of the conditions and
practices which produced and sustain these communities would be
illuminating for both the epistemology of social media and the emerging
area of neurodiverse epistemology. However, epistemology has only
recently begun to theorise about marginalised groups, and many of its
foundational principles are ill-suited to this work. In this talk I'll
outline a planned project to develop a novel approach to neurodiverse
epistemology, which challenges some of the fundamental assumptions of
the early, exploratory literature, and lays the groundwork for a
participatory methodology which can do real justice to neurodiverse
communities.
Speaker Bio:
Natalie Alana Ashton works on the political and social aspects of
epistemology, and is interested in how oppression and power effect
political deliberation in the online sphere. In the past she has focused
on theoretical issues (exploring how to integrate feminist standpoint
theory and hinge epistemology, whether these views should be understood
as relativist, and what that means). Her current work is on the
practical applications of such views: what they tell us about social
media legislation, platform design, and online communities.
Reading Circle (1-3 PM):
We will focus our discussion on an article by Natalie Ashton and a few

Alma Wittlin (1899, Lemberg/UA – 1991, Palo Alto/CA), promovierte Kunsthistorikerin (1925, Univ.
In Museum. Learning. Democracy. The Work and Life of Alma S. Wittlin (1899-1991) (Bd. 19, Reihe „Emigration – Exil – Kontinuität“, Herausg.

Dear all,
The PACE and KiC Projects cordially invite you to the next talk of the
Metaphilosophical Talk Series by
Amie Thomasson, Dartmouth College
Title: Starting a step back: Functional Pluralism and the Work of
Metaphysics
Date: March 27th, 2025 (Thursday)
Time: 16:45-18:15
Location: Hörsaal 50, Hauptgebäude (2.Stock, Stiege 8) -
Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien
Abstract:
Metaphysics traditionally answers questions such as “Are there
properties, universals, numbers, composite artifacts, fictional
characters…?’ ‘(If so), what are they like? How are they related to
minds, physical objects, etc.? Does ‘positing’ these things add
explanatory power to our theories?’… In this paper I will argue that we
should begin our questioning back a step, and begin by asking: “How does
talk of properties, numbers, ... enter language, and what functions does
it serve?” For doing so (I will argue) enables us to reevaluate many
classic metaphysical debates, to reassess prominent criteria used in
metaphysics, and to redirect metaphysics to more fruitful pursuits.
We look forward to seeing you!
Best wishes,

(2) STELLENAUSSCHREIBUNG (Berlin, Deadline: 14.04.2025)
Research assistant (postdoc) (m/f/d) in the Emmy Noether group CRITICAL
AGENCY at FU Berlin
_Full-time job limited to 2,5 years (+1,5 years upon positive evaluation
of the Emmy Noether project), salary grade (Entgeltgruppe) 13 TV-L FU,

Apply here:

The CRITICAL AGENCY project (funded by the DFG Emmy Noether programme)
explores critique as it is manifest in critical encounters: critique as
shaped by two logics - the logic of analysis and the logic of
resistance. Such critique does not always land as critique, some critics
are systematically ignored, some talk past each other, and sometimes
people have limited access to the resources needed to develop a critical
stance. In such cases, critical agency, i.e. the capacity to form and
put forward critique that is actually taken up as critique, is limited.
The research group explores what critical agency consists in and what
circumstances promote or inhibit it. It pays special attention to the
roles that understanding and ignorance - on the part of the critic(s),
the addressee(s), and the bystanders - play in critical encounters. In
order to answer philosophical questions that arise from our real-world
practices, it theorises critical agency with the help of ethnographic
resources, such as thick descriptions, field work, interviews, etc. The
project thereby develops an ethnographically informed political
epistemology that studies the interaction between socio-political and
epistemological aspects of critical agency.
_Job description:_
- Research and publication activities in the following areas: social and
political philosophy, critical theory, political (i.e. feminist and
critical race) epistemology, social epistemology, ethnographically
informed philosophy
- Focus on theories of resistance and analysis and on methodological
issues in ethnographically informed philosophy
- Collaboration with the project leader (resulting in joint paper
publication) on how to evaluate critical projects and the role that the
interaction of the two logics of critique (resistance and analysis)
plays in it
- Content-related and organisational support of the project leader,
mentoring of the doctoral student, participation in the activities of
the CRITICAL AGENCY research group
The research work can be carried out as part of a philosophical
habilitation project or in the form of article publications for further
academic qualification.
_Requirements:_
Completed university degree and doctorate in philosophy on a topic
relevant to the project.
_Desirable:_
- Experience in collaborative research projects
- specialised focus and knowledge in the areas of philosophy relevant to
the project (documented by academic publications), especially knowledge
in the fields of social and political philosophy and critical theory
- experience in ethnographic field work and/or access to an
ethnographically interesting field (e.g. through activist work).
Willingness to develop your philosophical project in an ethnographically
informed way (e.g. working with an ethnographic case study, using
ethnographic literature, etc.)
- excellent written and spoken English
- ability to achieve good work results even under time pressure and
ability to work in a team
- sound knowledge in all or some of the following areas of philosophy:
social philosophy, political philosophy, critical theory, political
(i.e. feminist, critical race) epistemology, social epistemology,
ethnographically informed philosophy, ethnography. Interest in questions
of philosophical methodology and interdisciplinary co-operation with
anthropologists
- publication experience (articles, editing special issues, anthologies,
etc.).
Please enclose with your application two writing samples: your
dissertation (or a chapter of your dissertation) and a journal article.

Abstract
A priori knowledge in the Kantian sense is characterized as being
independent from experience, insofar as it is necessary for the possibility
of experience in general. This notably includes the fundamental principles
of geometry and physics. With scientific changes such as non-Euclidean
geometry and relativistic physics, there arose the question whether the
Kantian a priori ought to be revised in the light of the best current
theories or replaced by pragmatic considerations or conventions. This talk
will offer a review of the progressive relativization of the Kantian a
priori from the Marburg School of neo-Kantianism to Hans Reichenbachs early
work. It will then use Paps taxonomy to differentiate among these early
relativizing strategies and to contrast them with attempts to relativize the
Kantian a priori in contemporary philosophy of science.

*Abstract:*While in most universities worldwide, the foundations of
quantum mechanics remain outside mainstream research, in Vienna, this
field thrives. With two Nobel laureates, E. Schrödinger and A.
Zeilinger, for their contributions to the foundations of quantum
mechanics, and hundreds of active researchers, Vienna is now recognized
as one of the strongholds for quantum foundations. But how did this come
about?
In this historical journey, we will explore how such a fertile ground
for foundational research emerged from a unique cultural milieu dating
back to Vienna’s intellectual golden age, when physics and philosophy
were deeply intertwined. We will also examine how the rise of
Nazi-fascism disrupted this thriving environment and how Viennese
institutions struggled to reconstruct modern physics after WWII.
Moreover, the postwar era’s pragmatic approach to physics, epitomized by
the motto „shut up and calculate,“ relegated quantum foundations to
almost taboo status. Even J. Bell, whose inequalities paved the way for
quantum nonlocality and quantum information science, received little
recognition for his foundational contributions during his lifetime.
We will see that, while this was also apparently the case in Vienna,
physics and philosophy were never fully disentangled, and foundational
interest kept smoldering under the ashes of pragmatism.

With kind regards,
The VDSP and VCQ Team
*/Quantum Outside the Box/*/is an interdisciplinary event series that
explores the intersection of quantum physics with other fields, offering
researchers fresh perspectives and unexpected connections. Through
engaging talks and discussions, participants gain new insights into the
ethical implications of emerging quantum technologies, draw parallels
between scientific creativity and artistic expression, and reflect on
the historical and philosophical dimensions of quantum discoveries. By
bridging disciplines, Quantum Outside the Box challenges researchers to
view their work in a broader context and consider its impact beyond
traditional scientific boundaries./

Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Alexander Reutlinger (LMU)
WHY STRATEGIC SCIENCE SKEPTICS ARE NOT “MODERN-DAY GALILEOS”. DEBUNKING
THE ARGUMENT FROM SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium
with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 20/03/2025
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS
3A
Abstract:
Strategic science skeptics criticize scientific claims solely to promote
non-epistemic (for instance, political and economic) goals. Strategic
science skeptics present arguments to support their criticisms of
scientific claims. In this paper, I will analyze and debunk a neglected
argument exploited by strategic science skeptics: the argument from
scientific revolutions (aka the "Galileo gambit"). According to this
skeptical argument, strategic science skeptics liken themselves to key
figures in scientific revolutions throughout the history of science - in
particular, to Galileo Galilei - in order to enhance the credibility of
their own claims. In this talk, I will argue that the argument from
scientific revolutions is not sound, because at least one of its
premises (stating that skeptics are, like Galileo Galilei, revolutionary
scientists) is false.
Dear all,
I hope you have a nice weekend.
One of the PhD students invited to the retreat will not be able to join
us. This opens up a space for a person who is willing to attend the
retreat at Stift Zwettl. As you may know, the VDP will cover
transportation, lodging, and meals so that you can focus on what is
important, which is your dissertation.
Please drop me a quick note if you would like to join. If there is more
than one person interested, I will randomly choose.
See you later at the doctoral assembly,
Raphael

DEUTSCHE GESELLSCHAFT FÜR PHILOSOPHIE E.V.
INFORMATIONEN DER DGPHIL
10. KALENDERWOCHE 2025
Dr.in Ingrid Becker, Postdoktorandin an
der Ruhr-Universität Bochum und Habilitandin an der Universität Sankt
Gallen, übernimmt das Ressort Wissenschaftskommunikation/IT.
Prof.in Dr.in Ruth Edith Hagengruber

Dear doctoral researchers,
There is an open call for PhD students at the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
As far as I am aware, the basic scholarship should be for 4 year, 800
euros per month, netto, no taxation. But you should ask this directly to
them. If there are some projects, it can be, of course, more.
PhD students have a lot of freedom in Slovakia, so in case 800 euros is
not enough, they often take some part time jobs, as teachers,
translators, or in some philosophy related institutions... Usually it
works very well.
It is not that much, but you a minimum for Bratislava or Košice. If
arrangements are satisfactory, it could be in principle possible to
pursue a co-tutelle at the University of Vienna. There is an office at
the University that deals with these matters.
Plese find the information in the attachment and at this link:
http://klemens.sav.sk/fiusav/?q=en
Best wishes,
Raphael
Dear all,
we are delighted to invite you all to the next installment of the APSE
talks series organized by the Applied Philosophy of Science and
Epistemology Unit at the Department of Philosophy, and to the
accompanying reading cycle. The lecture will be given by Natalie Alana
Ashton, University of Sterling.
As usual, at 13:00 on the day of the talk, there will be a possibility
to discuss some core readings of the talk with the APSE reading group.
If you wish to obtain the papers, and to partake in the reading cycle,
please contact vinzenz.fischer(a)univie.ac.at. Feel free to bring your
lunch!
We are also happy if you share this invitation with anyone who might be
interested!
Best wishes,

Happy about a gender neutral "hello"!
Dear VDP members,
This message is to remind you to attend and register for the Doctoral
Students Assembly of the summer term.
When and Where: Monday, 17 March from 18:30 to 20:00 in room 2i, NIG
(2nd floor, Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Vienna).
Agenda:
i) New rules for the distribution of ECTs; Working spaces for
non-salaried researchers; Pragmatic Academic Series SoSe25 (VDP
Coordinator)
ii) Reflection on topics raised in the previous assembly on 31 October
2024 (diagnoses, solutions, etc.)
iii) Objectives and issues to be addressed at the upcoming VDP Steering
Committee meetings and StuKo meetings
iv) Observations, questions, suggestions on behalf of the doctoral
researchers.
I kindly ask you to attend the doctoral student assembly. This is the
most important forum for the doctoral students. Apart from being a
social forum for a community that does not have so many opportunities
for interaction, it is also the main place to raise concerns, discuss
issues, and gather input to improve our doctoral education. The issues
raised in the assembly are collected by the student representatives and
brought to our government for action. Thus, this forum is essential for
the government to make policies that are in line with your interests.
Apart from this, the student representatives organize some social time
over pizza and drinks. In order to plan for this and to avoid waste,
they kindly ask you to confirm your attendance by email to
mira.magdalena.sickinger(a)univie.ac.at, ideally before Sunday, March 16.
We would be very grateful for your future participation and
registration.
Thank you for reading this message and considering this request,
Raphael

2. On the Cass Review: A Philosophy of Science Perspective -
Trans*formations Series
The Cass Review was a report commissioned by NHS England in 2020 to
recommend new practice guidelines in transgender healthcare for children
and adolescents, as well as to document problems with the existing
gender identity services. Following its release last year, it was cited
by both major political parties to justify the wholesale closure of the
services, a halt and then ban on the prescription of puberty blockers to
under 18s, and the suspension of a pending law to outlaw
conversion-therapy. A valuable case study as a piece of scientific
research and communication, this presentation examines the scientific
Cass Review from a philosophy of science perspective, evaluating its
conclusions and methodology with respect to notions of evidential norms,
standpoint epistemology, prejudicial attitudes, and the current paradigm
for trans* healthcare.

(2) CALL FOR PAPERS (Passau, Deadline: 07.04.2025)
Panel "Politische Ästhetik zwischen Entdeckung und Konstruktion"
_Politische Ästhetik zwischen Entdeckung und Konstruktion_ (Panel auf
der XII. Tagung für Praktische Philosophie am 25.-26. September 2025 in
Passau)
_Organisatorinnen:_ Katharina Naumann (Magdeburg/Berlin) & Larissa
Wallner (Frankfurt/Berlin)
'elite capture'.
Welche
politischen Funktionen übernimmt Kunst in der Zivilgesellschaft (Triki)?
Anonymisierte Abstracts (max. 500 Wörter) für einen Vortrag von 20
Minuten werden bis zum _7. April 2025_ erbeten an:
larissa.wallner(a)gmx.de und katharina.naumann(a)ovgu.de.
eingereicht.

(3) CALL FOR PAPERS (Dortmund, Deadline: 31.05.2025)
2nd Dortmund Conference on Philosophy and Society with Kate Vredenburgh
(LSE)
_October 1-2, 2025_
The Department of Philosophy and Political Science at TU Dortmund
University and the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial
Intelligence are delighted to announce the 2nd Dortmund Conference on
Philosophy and Society, taking place on October 1-2, 2025, in Dortmund,
Germany. The event will feature Kate Vredenburgh [2] from the London
School of Economics, who works in the philosophy of social science,
political philosophy, and the philosophy of technology, and who was
recently awarded a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship for a project on the
future of work. The first day of the conference will be reserved for up
to six presentations from speakers selected via this call for papers.
Kate Vredenburgh will be present to respond to the papers. She will also
give a public evening lecture. On the second day, we will hold a student
workshop on Vredenburgh's work.
_Conference Themes_
The conference will engage with themes from Vredenburgh's work, in
particular philosophical perspectives on artificial intelligence (AI)
and on the future of work. Concerning AI, Vredenburgh investigates the
moral implications of the use of opaque AI systems in the institutions
of our society, arguing for a right to explanation. She has developed an
ethically informed picture of algorithmic bias, and proposed an account
of how we should respond to such bias from the perspective of justice
and fairness. She is also an advocate of a right to explanation in the
context of AI, based on explanation's relevance in protecting the
possibility of informed self-advocacy. Regarding the future of work,
Vredenburgh's research focuses on the impact of AI on the workplace. She
draws on egalitarian theories of justice and argues that AI should be
deployed so as to enable more equality at work, and she maintains that
opaque AI contributes to working conditions which undermine workers'
autonomy while alienating them from their work.
_Call for Contributions_
We invite scholars to submit papers for the first day of the conference.
We welcome contributions on the topics sketched above, including, but
not limited to:
* Explainable AI - perspectives from ethics, political philosophy,
epistemology, and philosophy of science
* The right to explanation
* Algorithmic bias and algorithmic fairness
* The impact of AI on institutions
* The impact of AI on the future work
Contributions engaging with Vredenburgh's are especially welcome, but we
will also consider work on these topics more broadly.
_Submission Guidelines_
* Abstracts should be no more than 500 words, prepared for blind review.
* Submissions should be sent as PDF attachments to Paul Klur
[paul.klur(a)tu-dortmund.de]. Please use the subject line "CfP
Vredenburgh".
* The _deadline_ for submissions is _May 31, 2025_.
* Limited funding may be available to cover travel and accommodation
expenses for speakers who cannot otherwise finance these costs.

(4) CALL FOR PAPERS (Special Issue, Deadline: 31.07.2025)
Topoi: Linguistic Derogation and Its Prevention
Paper submissions are invited for the special issue/collection of Topoi
entitled: The Darkside of Language: Linguistic Derogation and Its
Prevention. The special issue aims to bring together researchers on
different areas of derogatory and manipulative language who also discuss
the practical implications of their research when it comes to preventing
both linguistic derogation/manipulation and its negative effects.
Special issue article publications often bring higher citations and
visibility than regular papers and attract more relevant readership due
to its scope. Topoi is indexed in the Web of Science under AHCI,
currently in Quartile 1 and placed in the top-10 ranked
Philosophy-Category journals, with a 2023 IF of 1,3 and CiteScore of
3,1.
Guest Editor(s):
* Stefan Rinner, University of Duisburg-Essen, Email:
stefan.rinner(a)uni-due.de
DESCRIPTION
Language can be used in highly destructive ways. One such way is the
usage of pejorative language. These are individual expressions, such as
slurs, or larger linguistic constructions, such as hate speech, that are
used to derogate an individual or group because of a certain group
identity (e.g. based on race, nationality, religion, gender, sexual
orientation, or the like) or because of personal characteristics, such
as appearance. As a consequence, derogatory language primarily has two
functions. First, it can be used to offend or psychologically harm.
Second, it can be used to create or reinforce negative attitudes towards
the derogated individual or group. For example, most uses of derogatory
language for Jewish people in Nazi propaganda had mainly the purpose to
create and reinforce anti-Semitic attitudes that would lead to
increasing discrimination and violence against Jewish people, to their
expulsion or incarceration in concentration camps, and, ultimately, to
genocide.
In the philosophy of language, the question then arises how linguistic
derogation is accomplished. A satisfactory answer to this question
should explain both the offensiveness of derogatory language and the
fact that it can be used to create and reinforce negative attitudes.
Since a comprehensive understanding of language requires an
understanding of how language is used to derogate, providing such an
explanation is generally seen as a touchstone for the quality and
correctness of theories from the philosophy of language. Moreover, a
better understanding of how linguistic derogation is accomplished is not
only of theoretical interest, but also of practical and ethical
relevance. If we can understand how linguistic derogation works, then we
can also understand how to prevent or at least contain the negative
consequences of its use, and whether such attempts at containment are
compatible with, for example, the right to free speech.
The discussion of linguistic derogation is often scattered throughout
different areas of inquiry, such as slurs, hate speech, or misgendering.
Furthermore, the question of how a better understanding of linguistic
derogation can help us to prevent or at least contain the negative
consequences of its use is often neglected. The ambition of this
collection is to close both gaps by bringing together researchers on
different areas of derogatory language who also discuss the practical
implications of their research. In addition, the issue will discuss
phenomena in the vicinity of linguistic derogation, such as linguistic
manipulation (e.g., the use of dogwhistles).
Possible topics include (but are not limited to):
* The semantics and pragmatics of derogatory language (including
misgendering)
* Derogatory language and free speech
* Counterspeech and other ways of blocking the negative effects of
derogatory language
* Linguistic manipulation and its prevention (e.g. dogwhistles, coded
language, fake news)

(6) VERANSTALTUNGSANKÜNDIGUNG (München, 28.07.-01.08.2025, Application
Deadline: 31.03.2025)
MCMP Summer School for Widening Participation in Mathematical Philosophy
(LMU Munich)
The Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP) is organizing the
second edition of the _"Summer School for Widening Participation in
Mathematical Philosophy"_, which will take place from 28th July to 1st
August 2025 in Munich, Germany.
The summer school continues a successful tradition, which began in 2014
with eight editions of the summer school on mathematical philosophy for
female students and was expanded in 2024 to underrepresented groups.
The 2025 "Summer School for Widening Participation in Mathematical
Philosophy" is open to women and members of other groups that are
under-represented in mathematical philosophy. These groups include
under-represented gender identities, races and ethnicities, people with
disabilities, people from low income and non-academic family
backgrounds. The target level is master students and last year-bachelor
students.
The school's aim is to encourage students to engage with mathematical
and scientific approaches to philosophical problems, and thereby help to
redress the under-representation of women and other marginalized groups
in mathematical philosophy. It offers the opportunity for study in an
informal and interdisciplinary setting, for lively debate, and for the
development of a network of students and professors interested in the
application of formal methods to philosophy.
The 2025 edition of the summer school will feature:
* A lecture series by Francesca Boccuni [5] (University Vita-Salute San
Raffaele) on _Frege and New Logicism_;
* A lecture series by Hilary Greaves [6] (Oxford) on _Introduction to
Formal Epistemology and Formal Ethics_;
* An evening lecture by Alyssa Ney [7] (LMU);
* Talks on mathematical philosophy by members of the MCMP;
* Talks and discussion concerning diversity and the profession;
* Poster presentations by the Summer School's participants;
* As well as social events and opportunities to explore Munich.
The organizing committee consists of Nicola Bonatti, Cordelia Berz, John
Dougherty, Levin Hornischer, Alessandra Marra, Toby C.P. Solomon.
[How to Apply:]
We welcome applications from women and members of other
under-represented groups (including under-represented gender identities,
races and ethnicities, people with disabilities, people from low income
and non-academic family backgrounds) who want to specialize in
mathematical philosophy. The school's target level is master students
and last year-bachelor students.
_When: _28 July - 1 August, 2025;
_Where: _in-person, in Munich, Germany;
_Application Deadline: _March 31, 2025;
_Participation fee: _The participation fee is 80EUR. For LMU students:

The first talk in this semester will be by Michael Rieppel
(Syracuse University) [2]: "In Search of Essentially Predicative
Entities“ this Monday 10.03.2025.
Abstract: According to a Fregean view recently revived in
higher-order metaphysics, predicates do not denote objects, construed as
any kind of thing a name could denote, but must denote things of a
fundamentally different logical type. A common route to that conclusion
is via Russell's Paradox, but this doesn't do much to illuminate what it
is about names and predicates that prevents them from both denoting
kinds of objects. This paper critically examines more linguistically
oriented arguments that attempt to establish the negative Fregean
conclusion by reflection on the nature of predication, or how names and
predicates combine to form truth-apt sentences in the first place. I
begin with two such arguments but conclude that, properly situated in a
general syntactic and semantic framework, they remain unconvincing. I
then reconstruct a third argument, inspired by Wittgenstein's picture
theory of meaning, showing that something in a sentence must indeed have
a semantic function other than that of denoting an object. However, the
Fregean victory remains constrained, in that we have little reason to
think English predicates must be what play that non-denoting role,
especially if predicate position is to be open to quantification.
