Am Fachbereich Philosophie und Geschichtswissenschaften der
Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main ist am Institut für Philosophie
folgende Stelle im Beamten- oder Arbeitsverhältnis zum nächstmöglichen
Zeitpunkt zu besetzen: _Professur (W1 mit Tenure Track) für Ethik_
Die Professur wird zunächst für sechs Jahre befristet besetzt, nach
erfolgreicher Evaluation erfolgt die unbefristete Übertragung einer
höherwertigen Professur (W2) gem. § 70 ab. 1, 2 und 4 Hessisches
Hochschulgesetz (HessHG). Die Ausschreibung richtet sich an Sie, wenn
Sie sich in einem frühen Stadium Ihrer wissenschaftlichen Karriere
befinden und noch keine Habilitation bzw. habilitationsäquivalente

Wir suchen eine Persönlichkeit, die international sichtbare Forschung in
der Ethik aufweist und dieses Fachgebiet in der Lehre breit vertreten
kann. Die Professur wirkt an der Konzeption, Koordination und
Durchführung eines neuen interdisziplinären Masterstudiengangs zu den
Themenbereichen Mensch, Natur, Geschichte mit (beteiligte Fächer:
Philosophie, Ethnologie, Geschichte). Die Bereitschaft zur Mitarbeit in
Lehrkooperationen und Forschungsinitiativen des Instituts und der
Universität wird erwartet.
Voraussetzung für die Bewerbung ist eine einschlägige Promotion im Fach
Philosophie. Die wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit nach der Promotion soll in
der Regel vier Jahre nicht übersteigen; § 70 Abs. 4. S. 2 HessHG findet
entsprechende Anwendung.
Die Professur ist auch an der Lehrkräftebildung beteiligt; Erfahrungen
und Konzepte zur Vermittlung der Fachinhalte an Schulen werden begrüßt.

PhD Position in Philosophy at the University of Zurich
The Institute of Philosophy at the University of Zurich offers a 4-year
funded PhD position under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Michael Messerli.
_Brief Description of the Project_
Human motivations sometimes change. A travel lover stops flying to
distant places in the face of climate change. A politician begins to
seek power instead of justice. Sometimes changing preferences seems to
be a good thing; at other times, it appears regrettable. How we evaluate
such changes is an important question. At the same time, we must
understand how preference change comes about in the first place. Why do
one person's preferences change in response to a given situation when
the preferences of another person - in a similar situation - do not?
When is it rational to change one's preferences?
Despite its strengths, standard decision theory cannot answer these
questions. That is, it cannot describe fundamental preference changes.
This calls for a paradigm shift in the relevant academic disciplines.
However, it is only recently that decision theorists have started to
develop new approaches to examining the question of preference change.
Furthermore, crucial normative issues have been neglected. For example,
once we better understand preference change, some might suggest that we
should try to change people's preferences, building on recent
influential research concerning changing the behavior and choices of
individuals via "nudges" or by modifying the "choice-architecture."
This project will adopt a conceptual, model-building, rational and
normative approach to motivational change and develop and empirically
test an original model of preference change. Its main objectives are:
(1) To understand motivational change better, both descriptively and
conceptually (What is motivational change? How should motivational
change be modeled?)
(2) To develop an original model of motivational change - the
"commitment-based theory" - and test whether it is normatively and
descriptively adequate (Does the theory stand up to normative testing?
Does the theory make correct predictions?)
(3) To explore and evaluate the normative dimensions of preference
change (When is a preference change rational? Are there other normative
constraints on motivational change? Are adaptive preferences rational?
Why are adaptive preferences so relevant in the context of current
feminist philosophy? Should we change people's preferences?)
_PhD Project_
In tackling some of these problems, the applicant can work within the
following areas:

_Scientific Requirements_
The candidate should:
- Have a Master's degree in philosophy at the moment of starting the PhD

Does morality have a point or function, and if so, what is it? Can we
learn anything about the nature of morality by asking for its point? And
what, if anything, would a point of morality imply for normative ethics
and metaethics? The aim of the conference is to bring together moral
philosophers who primarily work in a broadly Humean or broadly Kantian
tradition, and who currently tackle these or related questions in their
writings.

_Topical Collection Description: _In recent years, a new idea has taken
root in contemporary epistemological theorising that proposes a shift of
attention from singular beliefs of individual agents to maintenance
practices of entire belief systems. This new perspective, going back to
Ludwig Wittgenstein's late work, takes its moves from the key assumption
that our belief systems are ultimately supported by sets of unquestioned
pre-theoretical presuppositions, which function as the hinges of our
systems of thought. Hinge Epistemology, as the area of research
sprouting from this basic model has come to be known, has taken a more
applied and interdisciplinary turn in recent years. Drawing on cognitive
scientific theories, hinges have been compared to procedural knowledge,
drawing on feminist theory and social science, they have been compared
with prejudices. Additionally, hinge epistemologists have engaged with
the Moorean concept of common knowledge.

After several successful installments, the Faculty of Philosophy of the
University of Groningen [5] will host its yearly Winter School, aimed
primarily at advanced undergraduate students and early-stage graduate
students. The theme of the Winter School is Climate Change and the
Long-Term Future. It will consist of 6 lecture tutorials where topics
related to the theme will be discussed from different disciplinary
viewpoints: Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE). To facilitate
attendance by people from outside the Netherlands and Europe, the winter
school will be held online.
_Theme_
Climate change is among the biggest challenges humanity faces today. How
should individuals, societies, and humanity at large respond to climate
change and other long-term challenges? Far from being a question for the
natural sciences alone, a good answer also requires a 'PPE perspective',
that is, a perspective that combines philosophy, politics, and
economics. In this winter school, different researchers will take a PPE
perspective in exploring climate change and our ethical and political
obligations towards future people. The winter school starts with
fundamental normative questions, such as: What are our moral obligations
to future people? Do they extend to all future people and, if so, does
this imply that our longtermist moral duties trump any short-term
concerns? Climate change mitigation is typically seen as a collective
action problem and calls for an institutional solution that facilitates
widespread cooperation among individuals and countries. But what exactly
makes for successful and sustainable institutions? And a
social-psychological perspective will ask: what explains people's
attitudes and actions towards the environment and future generations and
how can those be improved? How can democracies respond to wide
disagreement around climate impacts and appropriate mitigation measures?
And, finally, what are effective solutions to securing a sustainable
energy supply? For example, should such a mix include nuclear energy?
And are European carbon pricing initiatives on the right track?
