Your personal sphere of influence:
As a Predoctoral University Assistant you will be part of the research
team of Univ.-Prof. Tarja Knuuttila. The main research areas associated
with this professorship are general philosophy of science, with focus on
scientific modeling, interdisciplinarity and philosophy of engineering.
Your duties will include active participation in research, teaching and
administration at the Department of Philosophy in the research area of
computational philosophy of science and philosophy of computing. The
main focus of the position is on the completion of a dissertation ready
for publication within this area of expertise.
The duration of the employment contract is 3 years. Initially limited to
1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3
years, if the employer does not submit a declaration of non-renewal
within the first 12 months.
Your future tasks:
You actively participate in research, teaching and administration:
* You participate in research projects, conferences, research
organization tasks and teaching.
* You work on your dissertation, completing it within 3 years.
* We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 12-18
months.
* You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of
the collective bargaining agreement.
* You will take on administrative tasks in research and teaching as
well as in the department.
* You supervise students and help with conducting examinations.
* You contribute to the organization and content of conferences,
publications and scientific projects.
Your academic profile:
* Completed master's degree, in the field of philosophy of science
* Thorough knowledge of and experience in computing
* High level of written and oral communication skills
* Excellent command of written and spoken English
* IT and e-learning skills
The following are desirable:
* Organizational and editing skills are a significant advantage
* Teaching experience / experience with e-learning
* Knowledge of university procedures and structures
* Experience in scientific work, and working as a part of a scientific
team
* Excellent German language skills

Workshop: Hoffnung, Verzweiflung und Zeitbezug
Menschliches Handeln ist konstitutiv auf eine kontingente Zukunft
gerichtet, die man nie ganz in der Hand hat. Zu dieser Unverfügbarkeit
kann man sich hoffend oder verzweifelnd verhalten, selten auch
indifferent. Der Workshop „Hoffnung, Verzweiflung und Zeitbezug" will
Natur und normative Dimension dieser Einstellungen thematisieren,
einschließlich der Frage, welche davon und in welchem Ausmaß in der
heutigen von Krisen und Brüchen gezeichneten Welt angemessen sind.
Der Workshop findet (in Präsenz) am Freitag den 12.09.2025 im Rahmen des

Das Internationale Zentrum für Philosophie und das Center for Science
and Thought laden herzlich ein zum Book Launch Event von Jan Voosholz'
neu erschienenem Werk _Towards a New Scientific Realism_.
Das Buch entwickelt einen neuen Typ des wissenschaftlichen Realismus
jenseits von Naturalismus, Korrelationismus und dem, was der Autor als
„objektiven Realismus" bezeichnet. Jan Voosholz verbindet eine kritische
Auseinandersetzung mit gegenwärtigen Debatten um Realismus und
Antirealismus in der Wissenschaftsphilosophie mit Beiträgen aus der
spekulativen und neuen realistischen Ontologie und Erkenntnistheorie.
Daraus entsteht eine eigenständige Perspektive auf eine pluralistische
Naturphilosophie. Die Veranstaltung bietet Gelegenheit zur Diskussion
mit dem Autor sowie mit ausgewiesenen Fachvertretern.

XAI, Fairness, the Future of Work
The Department of Philosophy and Political Science at TU Dortmund
University and the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial
Intelligence are delighted to announce the 2nd Dortmund Conference on
Philosophy and Society, taking place on October 1-2, 2025, in Dortmund,
Germany. The event will feature Kate Vredenburgh from the London School
of Economics, who works in the philosophy of social science, political
philosophy, and the philosophy of technology, and who was recently
awarded a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship for a project on the future of
work.
The first day of the conference is reserved for presentations from
speakers selected via a call for papers. Kate Vredenburgh will be
present to respond to the papers. On the same day, she will also give a
public keynote lecture. On the second day, we will hold a student
workshop on Vredenburgh's work.
_Conference Themes_
The conference will engage with themes from Vredenburgh's work, in
particular philosophical perspectives on artificial intelligence (AI)
and on the future of work. Concerning AI, Vredenburgh investigates the
moral implications of the use of opaque AI systems in the institutions
of our society, arguing for a right to explanation. She has developed an
ethically informed picture of algorithmic bias, and proposed an account
of how we should respond to such bias from the perspective of justice
and fairness. She is also an advocate of a right to explanation in the
context of AI, based on explanation's relevance in protecting the
possibility of informed self-advocacy. Regarding the future of work,
Vredenburgh's research focuses on the impact of AI on the workplace. She
draws on egalitarian theories of justice and argues that AI should be
deployed so as to enable more equality at work, and she maintains that
opaque AI contributes to working conditions which undermine workers'
autonomy while alienating them from their work.

Konferenz: Epistemic Horizons: Symposium on the work of Christoph Jäger
On October 8 and 9, 2025, the Department of Christian Philosophy,
University of Innsbruck, will host an in-person event on the occasion of
Christoph Jäger's 60th birthday.
Christoph Jäger is Professor of Philosophy at the University of
Innsbruck. He works primarily in epistemology, philosophy of religion,
philosophy of emotion and the history of philosophy, with particular
interest in epistemic authority, self-knowledge, and the normativity of
belief. His publications engage both with contemporary analytic debates
and historical sources, especially in the Christian philosophical
tradition.
Speakers include Elke Brendel (Bonn), Michel Croce (Genoa), Katherine
Dormandy (Innsbruck), Thomas Grundmann (Cologne), Geert Keil (Berlin),
Arnon Keren (Haifa), Federica Malfatti (Innsbruck), Nicholas Shackel
(Cardiff/Oxford), Johanna Stüger (Cambridge), and René van Woudenberg
(Amsterdam).
