Carnap's Problem: Rules, Models, and Meaning

Date:* 28/05/2026

Venue:* New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3C

Abstract:*
In his /Formalization of Logic /(1943) Carnap pointed out that there are
non-normal interpretations of classical logic: non-standard
interpretations of the
connectives and quantifiers that are consistent with the classical
consequence relation of a language.
Different ways around the problem have been proposed. In a recent paper,
Bonnay and Westerst˚ahl argue that the key to a solution is imposing
restrictions on the type of interpretation we take into account. More
precisely, they claim that if we restrict attention to interpretations
that are (a) compositional, (b) non-trivial and (c) in the case of the
quantifiers, invariant under permutations of the domain, Carnap’s
Problem is avoided.
This paper has two goals. The first is to show that Bonnay and
Westerst˚ahl’s solution to Carnap’s Problem doesn’t work. The second is
to argue that something similar to their proposal seems to do the job.
The problems with Bonnay and Westerst˚ahl’s approach trace back to
issues concerning the (un)definability of subsets of the domain of
first-order structures, as well as to the compositionality of
first-order languages. After expanding on these problems, I’ll propose a
way to modify Bonnay and Westerst˚ahl’s account and solve Carnap’s Problem.

Conservatism as a Norm of Scientific Practice

Abstract:*
Contemporary scientists extol the virtues of conservatism, the view that
advocates the preservation of the theoretical status quo and
castigates everything beyond this as unfounded speculation. More
generally, conservatives emphasize that science has been almost always
cumulative, and scientific progress has been almost always made
through evolution, rather than revolution. They further suggest that
contemporary science should be cumulative, and that it should make
progress through evolution, rather than revolution.
In this talk, I provide a brief historical-conceptual analysis of
conservatism as a norm that urges us to preserve the theoretical
status quo, extend its intended domain of resiliency to the furthest
extent possible, and only allow changes if we have stronger reasons to
accept some theoretical alternative. I then focus on a specific
expression of conservatism - the so-called principle of permanence -
which has been extremely influential since mid-19th century in both
mathematics and physics, in an attempt to determine, more precisely,
the kinds of normativity that conservatism is thought to have.

A morphosyntactic construal of "being" as understood by Plato and
Aristotle
Abstract: The expression of the classical concept of being in
philosophy, articulated through the Indo-European verbal copula par
excellence (BE), operates at a syntactic level that transcends the
distinctions that led Frege, Russell, Wittgenstein, and others to regard
this verb as ambiguous. My presentation connects “being”, as understood
by Plato and Aristotle, with the morphosyntactic structures of Classical
Greek. As a technical term in classical Greek philosophy, εἰμί ‘am’ (≈
BE) did not convey a predicate or part of a predicate, but grammatical
categories marked on Classical Greek verbs. However, Plato and Aristotle
did not see εἰμί as an inflectional support morpheme entirely devoid of
semantic content. Since εἰμί remained unmarked for certain features
operating above the predicate level throughout its grammaticalization,
Plato and Aristotle, as Classical Greek speakers, believed that it
constituted (what we could describe as) a default predication structure
that need not be associated with an event in the strict sense.

Dear colleagues,
I would like to draw your attention to a Call for Papers that may be of
interest to those working at the intersection of philosophy, religious
studies, political theory, and more-than-human ecology.
The workshop /Myth and the More-than-Human Community in the Twenty-First
Century/ will take place on 8–9 October 2026 at the University of
Vienna, with keynote lectures by Prof. Vanessa Lemm and Prof. Laurens
ten Kate.
The workshop asks whether community — and more-than-human community in
particular — can be conceived as anything other than a myth. It places
the constitutive ambivalence of myth at the centre of its inquiry: myth
as ideological fiction on the one hand, and as a primordial, potentially
non-hierarchical form of world-disclosure on the other. Topics include
inter-species relations, ecological entanglements, becoming-animal,
sovereignty and immunisation, and relational and Indigenous ontologies.
Theoretical reference points include Derrida, Nancy, Latour, Haraway,
and Nietzschean and post-Nietzschean critiques of humanism. Find the
full CfP attached.
Contributions may take the form of individual papers (20 minutes,
followed by 30 minutes of discussion). Proposals should include the
presenter’s name, paper title, full contact details, an abstract of 500
words, and a brief biographical note — submitted as a single PDF file.
Deadline: 17 July 2026
Contact: myth.community(a)lists.univie.ac.at

Dear colleagues,
we are pleased to invite submissions for the conference “Experimenting Philosophy of Religion: Altering Politics, Ecology and Aesthetics in Transition”, which will take place from 21–23 October 2026 at the University of Vienna.
The conference explores “experimenting philosophy of religion” as a field, method, and performative mode of exchange. It aims to engage with pressing contemporary challenges—particularly in politics, ecology, and aesthetics—by fostering exploratory, unconventional, and interdisciplinary approaches. While the focus lies on philosophy of religion, contributions from related disciplines such as sociology, political science, and cultural studies, artistic and other related disciplines are very welcome. We especially welcome contributions that work with innovative methods, address marginal questions, or challenge established disciplinary boundaries.
The conference is structured around three thematic panels:
* Politics & Society
* Ecology & Nature
* Arts & Aesthetics
Early career researchers are particularly encouraged to apply. Presentations will be 20 minutes long, followed by a response and discussion.
Submission details and guidelines in the full Call for Papers can be found here<https://vdtr.univie.ac.at/activities/public-events>.

Dear All,
this is a reminder for the next Trans*Formations Event at the Philosophy
Institute.
For those who do not know the series: This talk and workshop series
organized by a bunch of people from the Philosophy Department (BA, MA
and PhD) provides insights into recent developments in trans*
philosophizing. Thanks to the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy (VDP)
[1] and queer@hochschulen [2] for their financial support!
In the next talk, Jane Russell KC (Lawyer from London) will discuss her
experiences with contemporary cases in UK law that deal with rights of
trans* people. She will give insight into her practice, and reflect on
anti-trans* presuppositions and British terfism that become evident in
these court cases.
The event will be in English!
When: 15.5.2026, 16:00-17:30
Where: HS 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien)
Trans* Exclusion in UK Courts
A Talk by Jane Russell KC
As a lawyer, Jane Russell KC has represented the interests of the
British trans* community in some of the most high profile cases of the
past decade: Bailey v Stonewall and Garden Court (2022), involving the
co-founder of the prominent anti-trans lobbying group LGB Alliance;
Forstater v CGD (2019), involving the founder of Sex Matters, and which
established that "gender critical views" are protected as a
'philosophical belief' under the Equality Act 2010; recently, Peggie vs
Fife Health Board and Dr. B Upton (2025), which considered whether a
nurse had been subject to discrimination by virtue of being expected to
share a changing room with a trans* colleague. With her legal expertise
and personal insights into the fight for trans* rights inside the
courtroom, Jane Russell is ideally placed to shed light on how powerful
groups use the law to target trans* people, and how trans* rights can be
protected by the court.
There will be drinks & snacks and a Q&A after the talk!
We are especially happy if those join the talk who are versed in the
legal situation of trans* people in Austria, so we can have a fruitful
discussion on similarities, differences, and possible strategies for
action. But: no prior legal knowledge required!!!
Please register here [3] and forward to everyone who could be
interested!
Looking forward to seeing you at the talk!

Dear All,
we are pleased to invite you to the conference
*Knowledge in Crisis: Knowledge, Power and Social Life*
*1–3 July 2026*
*University of Vienna - Sky Lounge*
How can epistemology help us to better understand and overcome the
crisis of knowledge? The aim of this conference is to showcase cutting
edge work on knowledge: its nature and norms as well as its social and
political dimensions. We want to foster exchange between different
approaches to knowledge and the crisis it finds itself in. At the heart
of the crisis of knowledge are philosophical problems about the
relationship between knowledge, truth, science, ethics and politics—and
ultimately our relationship to reality itself.

The FWF Emerging Fields project UnAxiMa (Uncovering the Axioms of Mathematics) is offering up to 12 postdoc positions and up to 12 PhD positions at TU Wien and the University of Vienna, Austria. The goal of the 5-year project is to explore the axioms of mathematics taking into account aspects of mathematical logic (in particular, set theory, computability theory, and reverse mathematics), complexity theory, automated theorem proving, and philosophy. The project is jointly led by six principal investigators:
Juan P. Aguilera (TU Wien),
Vera Fischer (University of Vienna),
Laura Kovács (TU Wien),
Sandra Müller (TU Wien),
Michael Pinsker (TU Wien), and
Georg Schiemer (University of Vienna).
UnAxiMa is looking for highly motivated and creative candidates, and in particular encourage female researchers to apply. The applicants should have a strong background in at least one of the following fields: mathematical logic, theoretical computer science, universal algebra, or philosophy of mathematics. For the PhD positions the requirements are a Master's degree or equivalent in mathematics, computer science, or philosophy. For the postdoc positions the requirements are a PhD or equivalent in mathematics, computer science, or philosophy. Successful candidates will be based at either TU Wien or University of Vienna, but will collaborate with all of the 18-30 team members intensively.
Dates:
Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. For full consideration, we encourage applications by May 22nd, 2026. Successful applicants will start in October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter, but not later than October 2027. The duration of the positions will be up to 4 years (for PhD positions) and 3 years (for postdoc positions), with initial contracts offered for one year, and prolongation subject to evaluation. The positions carry no teaching load; however, participation in teaching might be arranged if desired. There is sufficient funding for conference and research exchange trips.
Online interviews are planned for June 15th–17th, 2026.

Philosophy: What and How?
A workshop on the nature, aims, and methods of philosophy.
Views on what philosophy is and how it should be done vary widely. Is
philosophy concerned with reality or with our concepts used for grasping
aspects of reality? Does philosophy use a priori or empirical methods?
What is the role of intuitions? And of the method of cases? What are
philosophers trying to find out? Is Philosophy a descriptive or a
normative discipline, or both?

Dear All,
we want to cordially invite you to the May Trans*Formations Event at the
Philosophy Institute.
As a lawyer, Jane Russell KC has represented the interests of the
British trans* community in some of the most high profile cases of the
past decade: Bailey v Stonewall and Garden Court (2022), involving the
co-founder of the prominent anti-trans lobbying group LGB Alliance;
With her legal expertise
and personal insights into the fight for trans* rights inside the
courtroom, Jane Russell is ideally placed to shed light on how powerful
groups use the law to target trans* people, and how trans* rights can be
protected by the court.

The Trans Brain?
History and Current Hypotheses on the Neural Basis of Transness
Abstract:
Against the background of contemporary debates about the supposed
natural basis of sex/gender and the intersection of neurodivergence and
transness, the lecture will turn to the history and contemporary
theories of the neural basis of transness. Contemporary trans brain
hypotheses rest on a whole array of presuppositions: The assumption that
brains have a sex/gender; that this brain sex/gender can stand in
opposition to the sex assigned at birth; that brain sex/gender develops
in response to hormonal changes; that this development has a temporal
threshold; and that one can discern transness from a
trans-sexed/gendered brain - all of these conveyed through imaging
technologies.
To fan out the presuppositions that fuel contemporary theories of the
neural basis of transness, the lecture will trace its history through
the lens of trans/feminist science studies. Starting from theories about
the natural bisexuality and plasticity of mammals and their eugenic
interpretations at the beginning of the 20th century (Eugen Steinach,
Paul Kammerer), the lecture will move through the early hypotheses about
the neural basis of transness in the post-Second World War inception of
trans medicine in the US (John Money, Robert Stoller, Harry Benjamin),
to the first neuroimaging studies on transness in the 1990s and early
2000s, to finish with the neurodevelopmental hypothesis of transness in
contemporary neuroscience and a discussion of its impacts on the lives
of trans people.
Neuronal explanations of transness certainly do not carry the same
weight in the debates about the natural basis of sex/gender and
transness as chromosomal explanations. Incidents such as the
International Chess Federation's ban of trans women from the women's
category, the European Society of Endocrinology's considerations about
brain scans as "a useful tool for earlier identification of
transgenderism in young people," and calls from neuroscientists to
intervene in and prevent the development of transness in the brain
nevertheless illustrate the current and potentially future power of such
explanations over the lives of trans people.

Abstract:
There is always a certain purposefulness of natural sounds: the sound of
breaking waves manifest the conditions on the sea, the sound of striking
thunder marks the dangers of a storm, birds’ singing is their way of
communication. These sounds make worldly sense as they inform all
perceptible beings about their surroundings, about the momentary conditions
of the world. Accordingly, sounds of nature are limited in scope (an
assertion that may be challenged by environments such as native jungle,
though a different register of perception could be expected there), to the
extent that when we happen to be in spaces empty of anthropogenic sounds,
our experience might be very close to an experience of silence.
Humans, on the contrary, produce a lot of noise polluting our earthly
surroundings. This noise is often wasteful; it doesn’t communicate anything
specific that we need for a better orientation in the world. Continuous
passing of cars in front of my window, the monotonous noise of a machine,
the drilling and hammering of endless construction sites consume time
repeating the same futile message over and over again.
In Anthropocene, it is not only noise that is wasteful this way: it’s also
light, energy water or oxygen. Through the continuous decrease of,
especially animal, diversity, human noise becomes hegemonial. In urban
spaces, the declining presence of singing, cawing and quacking birds
constitutes perhaps the most noticeable change in this respect, one of the
reasons for which is anthropogenic harm to birds’ migratory routes.
I argue that phenomenology as an attentive style of thinking helps us to
notice the scale of the problem, which is the condition of possibility for
action and change. In doing this, I reach to different ecophenomenological
readings of Merleau-Ponty, ecophenomenologies of sound, and descriptive
studies of birds’ migration.

Dear all,
You are hereby invited to the next "Physics meets Philosophy" talk
(organized in cooperation with the Institute for Quantum Optics and
Quantum Information) by
Gal Ben Porath (University of Bonn)
Title: The kinematics of indeterminism (see abstract below)
Date: April 24th (Friday)
Time: 11:00-12:30
Location: IQOQI Seminar room (Boltzmanngasse 3, 2nd floor)
Zoom link (for those that cannot join in person):
https://univienna.zoom.us/j/61334139090?pwd=OHqUQNmVwbfI9d7b80Z7k2cCXJiXNS.1
Abstract:
Discussions of determinism and indeterminism of physical theories
usually focus on properties of dynamical laws (e.g., uniqueness of
solution). This is perfectly adequate in all the usual cases.
However, when considering speculative models that seek to introduce
fundamental indeterminism into physics, such discussions are
unsatisfying. The unusual ontological roles attributed to
indeterministic changes by the authors of such models, require them to
have unusual kinematical features. I will examine these desired roles
and point to their problematic nature. I will then suggest recognizing
the occurrence of jump discontinuities as the distinguishing feature of
indeterministic kinematics and explore some consequences of such a
recognition.

PHILOSOPHIE UND RAUMFAHRT
Symposium zu Jan Völkers Buch "Ein Weltall des Kapitals: Die Überwindung der
terrestrischen Vernunft" (2025)
Donnerstag, 21.
In seinem

Bio: Luana Pesarini is a philosophy-trained sociologist specializing in
feminist science and technology studies, theories of materiality, and
trans feminism. She is currently working as a doctoral researcher in the
German Research Foundation-funded RTG "Fixing Futures. Technologies of
Anticipation in Contemporary Societies" at Goethe University Frankfurt,

Dear all,
we are pleased to announce the fourth talk in our TEAP seminar series <https://sites.google.com/view/themeseap>.
The talk is scheduled for Friday, April 10, 11:00-13:00 (CEST), at the following link: https://univienna.zoom.us/j/68312177521?pwd=fdYFFrcK1hg3Qw7GH2nCNVTIdV26rs.1 (ID riunione: 683 1217 7521 Codice d’accesso: 722203)
Alice van’t Hoff (University of Vienna) – Against higher-order unrestrictedness
Generality absolutists argue that it is possible to quantify absolutely unrestrictedly over everything that there is. A challenge to their view arises if we take seriously the possibility of genuinely higher-order quantification. An influential proposal, first put forward by Timothy Williamson, however, suggests that to conclude on this basis against generality absolutism would be premature. Williamson's claim is that higher-order quantification in our object language is only a threat to generality absolutism if we, misleadingly, adopt a first-order metalanguage. I argue, though, that this approach is subject to a counter-example: intuitively, quantification in many-sorted languages need not be absolutely general. Yet both higher-order and many-sorted systems may involve multiple distinct quantifiers and there are, I claim, no differences of the kind relevant to a quantifier's unrestrictedness that distinguish these two versions of quantifier pluralism. This suggests, contra Williamson and others, that higher-order quantification is a threat to generality absolutism, at least insofar as we take quantification of this kind ontologically seriously.
Hope to see you online!

Dear colleagues,
We cordially invite you all to the workshop *Resisting Othering.
Reimagining the Self-Other Relationship Globally*, taking place on
9-10th April 2026.
Address: Department of Philosophy, Room 3D, NIG, Universitätsstraße 7
You can find the description and program below, and the details here:
https://phaenomenologie.univie.ac.at/forschung/othering/
Registration is not necessary.
Best regards,
Elise Coquereau-Saouma and Michael Staudigl (Organisation)
_____
Description:
Otherness is still most often conceived in distinction from the self, as
in the figure of the foreigner or the barbarian—the other of my culture.
The other thus serves, through a play of resemblance and difference, to
delineate who I am and to which societies, communities, cultures, and
groups I belong, notably by contrast and opposition. This space between
self and other easily takes on an exclusionary value, sometimes with
radical consequences: the pariah, the untouchable, or, likewise, the
refugee camps behind barbed wire at the border. This binary between self
and other can be politically exploited to set different societies,
religions, or communal groups against each other. It can also serve as a
justification for the exploitation of nature. It can manifest in less
visible and less extreme, but no less problematic, examples of othering
processes. In this workshop, we aim to question what makes the exclusion
of others possible, starting from the very conception of alterity that
underpins our models of exclusion. In other words, the goal is to
develop conceptual alternatives to these processes of othering.
While much of the philosophical literature addressing these issues has
emerged from Western traditions, non-Western models of alterity can
offer significant and as yet underexplored contributions to these
questions. These approaches, rooted in diverse local contexts and
practices, may often be more attuned to the specific forms of exclusion
and othering encountered in those societies, and thus provide conceptual
resources that cannot simply be replaced by universalizing Western
frameworks.
Accordingly, this workshop seeks not only critical analyses of
exclusionary practices, but above all positive theories of relation to
the other—approaches that move beyond the binary of self and other and
ground new models for thinking alterity. We invite contributions that
articulate such alternative frameworks, whether through concepts of
nondualism, interdependence, relational ontology, or other traditions of
thought that resist the reduction of alterity to opposition. Our aim is
to foster a space for proposals that do not merely critique, but
actively reimagine the self’s relation to the other, drawing on the
richness of non-Western traditions to shape a genuinely global theory of
alterity relevant for our time.

Call for Participation
Over the course of five days participants will have the opportunity to
engage with renowned experts in discussions on the topic of trust and
cooperation on the interpersonal and institutional level, as well as
within the contexts of climate change and immigration. Trust and
cooperation have become front and center issues in today's world. The
nature of global challenges - from refugees seeking asylum to the
ecological crises of climate change and biodiversity loss - renders
cooperation ever more crucial to overcoming them. Key questions revolve
around the nature of trust and the nature of cooperation respectively,
as well as around the relationship between trust and cooperation,
intersecting the fields of social and political philosophy, as well as
applied ethics and political epistemology.
We welcome applications from PhD students (prioritized), advanced MA
students and postdoctoral researchers in philosophy and related
disciplines.
Participants will explore current research in these fields, attend
keynote lectures, thematic discussions and interactive workshops, as
well as present their own work, and receive valuable feedback from
invited scholars. The goal of this Summer School is to provide doctoral
students with direct access to leading researchers whose work--whether
directly or indirectly--relates to these themes.
Application & Fees
We welcome applications from PhD students (prioritized), advanced MA
students and postdoctoral researchers in philosophy and related
disciplines. Two modes of participation are possible: 1) attendance, 2)
presentation - if they would also like to give a presentation.
To apply for participation, please send the following documents to
Joachim Raich (joachim.raich(a)univie.ac.at [6]):
* Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages)
* Statement of Purpose (no longer than 1 page), explaining the
relevance of the summer school to your study, research, teaching and/or
other professional work.
* Statement of Financial Aid (optional). We can offer limited partial
financial support (including the coverage of the school fees) to the
participants whose home institutions cannot cover their expenses. We
therefore ask the applicants who wish to be considered for funding to
briefly describe their situation in the statement.
* Abstract (optional; max. 250 words). If you would like to present
your work at the summer school, please send us a short abstract of your
presentation. The presentations should be related in a significant
manner to the themes of trust and/or cooperation (from any philosophical
perspective) and should be about 20 minutes long to leave enough time
for discussions. Since the number of slots for student presentations is
limited, this will help us decide on how to allocate them.
The maximum number of participants at the summer school will be 25. Full
attendance is worth 4 ECTS.
The summer school fee is 75 Euros. The fee includes the student union
fee of 25 Euros, which is required by Austrian law to register at the
University of Vienna and to receive a certificate of completion of the
summer school.
Please, submit your application by April 14, 23.59 CET.
Contact Email: joachim.raich(a)univie.ac.at [6]
We will notify you of the decision by end of April.
Diversity Statement
We strongly encourage applications from members of disadvantaged and
underrepresented groups.

Title: Models of Emergence in Physics vs Theories of Novelty Production
in Biology
Abstract: Several notion of ‘‘emergence’’ have been proposed in physics.
They mostly concern the emergence of new structures and forms
(morphogenesis). From Turing and Thom’s analysis of morphogenesis to
self-organization in far from equilibrium thermodynamics and Parisi’s
networks, a few types of emerging phenomena in complex systems will be
recalled. Then the difference will be stressed with “novelty production”
in biology. In Darwinian evolution, in particular, the conceptual (and
possibly mathematical) frames require the construction of new
perspectives, due to the nature of the intended observables and their
historical specificity. The issue of “unification” with the many
theories of inert matter involved in the understanding of biology will
be hinted, by setting bridges and proposing conceptual dualities.
This talk is organized by Prof. Dr. Tarja Knuuttila.
We look forward to your participation and to engaging discussions!
With kind regards
Florian Kolowrat

Dear All,
The next talk in the "Wittgenstein=steine" series is this Friday (June
13th) at 3pm in room NIG 3D.
The speaker is Konstantin Deininger, and his title is:
_"On the Material and Formal Aspects of (Moral) Certainty"_.
Abstract:
Does morality have a binding character in the sense that chains of
justification come to an end? In this talk, I will affirm this question
and argue that we can plausibly distinguish between formal and material
aspects of moral certainty. As a starting point, I will interpret
Wittgenstein's idea of "bedrock," introduced in §217 of the
Philosophical Investigations, as standing for the end of a chain of
reasoning. In doing so, I align with certain Wittgensteinian
interpreters who maintain that some chains of moral reasoning end with
certainty. However, I will arrive at deviating conclusions by
demonstrating that different kinds of moral certainties function in
different ways. Wittgensteinian scholars such as Cora Diamond and Nigel
Pleasants correctly identify the formal aspect of moral certainty,
showing that some propositions resist justification and doubt. However,
the candidates for formal certainties they propose do not fully satisfy
the criteria of certainty. This, I argue, is due to their failure to
adequately distinguish between the formal and material aspects of
certainty. Material certainties, such as Diamond's "slavery is unjust
and insupportable" or Pleasants' "killing is wrong," remain intelligible
to some extent and are thus subject to justification and doubt. Still,
these propositions function as regress stoppers by putting an end to the
chain of reasoning--but they do not mark the boundary of the
unintelligible as formal certainties do. Drawing on Wittgenstein's later
writings, I will argue that only formal certainties--which I refer to as
transcendental certainties--are entirely exempt from justification and
doubt. I identify the principle "equals are to be treated equally" as a
plausible candidate for transcendental certainty. This certainty is
foundational to moral reasoning and enables moral thought. I illustrate
its role through debates on justice in animal ethics.
Everybody welcome!
Best wishes from the organizers,
