Date: 08/05/2025 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3A Abstract: Enlightenment features can be found in most groups associated with Late Enlightenment currents in the Viennese interwar period. Beyond each group's particularities, a few key meanings can be identified: "popularization" through knowledge, a singular structure of ideas behind a visual metaphor, a self-positioning tool, and a critical-emancipatory embodied scientific attitude. This talk will attempt to sketch these intertwined meanings, and then seek to understand their links with historical Enlightenment figures such as Voltaire and Rousseau. To do so, I will focus on the journals of the monists and freethinkers, writings of Josef Popper-Lynkeus, and the book series "Der Aufstieg" from Anzengruber-Verlag (Suschitzky brothers).

Einladung zum Workshop „Erreichbarer Frieden“ – 13. Juni 2025

*Erreichbarer Frieden – Eine interdisziplinäre Annäherung* Friedenskonzeptionen unterscheiden sich in der Art und Weise, wie sie Frieden begreifen: Philosophische Ansätze diskutieren einerseits ideale Vorstellungen von Frieden, andererseits konkrete Handlungsnormen, wie etwa in der Tradition des gerechten Krieges. In der Soziologie wird erreichbarer Frieden als ein messbarer Zustand der Konfliktbewältigung verstanden. Politisch könnten wir ihn als Ausgestaltung von Machtverhältnissen oder die verhandlungsgeleitete, praktische Umsetzbarkeit eines Nicht-Kriegszustands verstehen. Der Workshop zielt darauf ab, diese Perspektiven miteinander ins Gespräch zu bringen. Im Zeitalter der Wiederaufrüstung Europas stellen sich moralische, politische und institutionelle Fragen nach der Erreichbarkeit von Frieden: Was macht einen erreichbaren Frieden aus? Wie können wir ihn disziplinübergreifend begreifen? Macht ein erreichbarer Frieden den Diskurs über idealisierte Friedensvorstellungen obsolet? "How Words Help Us Think" – Nancy Salay – 30.05

Dear colleagues, I’m happy to invite you to this lecture by Associate Professor Nancy Salay (Queen’s University, Canada) on her new book How Words Help Us Think: An Externalist Account of Representational Intentionality (Bloomsbury, 2025). Abstract There is general agreement that a capacity to act for reasons is a mark of intentionality. Views differ widely, however, on how ‘acting for reasons’ unpacks. According to the cognitivist tradition in which individuals are the central units of investigation, intentional agents make sense of their world via internal representations variously construed as neural, mental, or, on some reductive accounts, both. On these views, to act for a reason is to be responsive to some representation of the how the world is, was, or could be. How behaviour is guided by explicit use of representations—e.g., deliberation between whether to pick answer A or B on a multiple-choice exam—is taken to be continuous with the way that implicitly representational processes such as perception guide behavior. For 4E theorists, in contrast, intentional agents are not individuals so much as they are continually shifting agent-situation couplings to and from which responses develop, often reciprocally. Intentional agents learn to cope within their world as they move and act within it; their needs and wants develop in accordance with their capacity to skillfully “operate” within ongoing situation landscapes. To ‘act for a reason’ here is to be agentive and responsive in a codeveloping agent-situation. In the context of a comprehensive account of cognition, both views offer important insights. The representational approach brings attention to the cognitive power of explicitly deliberative activity but 4E views explain how operative intentionality grounds actions. In How Words Help Us Think, the book on which this talk is based, these insights are merged. Representations do have a powerful role to play in deliberative processes but not as internal structures that agents “recur” on; rather, they are external tools for spatiotemporally extending the ongoing situations in which intentional agents are always embedded. On this view, a deliberative capacity, what I will be calling “representational intentionality,” is a strongly scaffolded skill rather than a fundamental capacity: while neural activity plays a critical role here, the development of representational intentionality requires in addition a certain kind of environment—one in which there are language practices—and a particular skill with it. My task in this book is to give an account of how representational intentionality develops when the requisite endogenous and exogenous factors are present. Herzliche Einladung zur Buchpräsentation "Kafka als Patient : Stationen in Wien und Kierling" am 28.04.2025 um 18.00 Uhr an der Fachbereichsbibliothek Philosophie und Psychologie https://bibliothek.univie.ac.at/events/008289.html https://bibliothek.univie.ac.at/fb-philosophie-psychologie/files/Einladung_… [cid:image001.png@01DBB373.0AAD1D90] Der heute weltbekannte Autor Franz Kafka litt bereits früh unter vegetativen Beschwerden und war seit 1917 schwer an Tuberkulose erkrankt. Sein Leidensweg als Patient zog sich über fast sieben Jahre. Dieses Buch zeichnet Kafkas Begegnungen mit den Ärzten und Ärztinnen in Wien nach, die seine letzten Lebenswochen begleiteten. Kafka war ein gesundheits- wie kostenbewusster Patient Franz Kafka unterzog sich im Laufe seines Lebens vielen ärztlichen Untersuchungen, wandte sich dabei aber immer mehr von der Schulmedizin ab. Er legte großen Wert auf eine naturnahe Lebensführung, bevorzugte vegetarische Speisen und bewegte sich viel im Grünen. Zudem kurte er häufig. Für die schwache gesundheitliche Konstitution haben Kafkas Biografen dessen Beziehungen und familiäre Krisen verantwortlich gemacht. Leistungsdruck, eine erfolglose Partnersuche oder materielle Erwartungen der Eltern hatten daran ihren Anteil. Als bei ihm 1917 Lungen-Tbc diagnostiziert wurde, setzte er weiterhin auf den bereits eingeschlagenen Weg, ohne die Krankheit selbst behandeln zu lassen. Erst am Rande der Auszehrung zog er einen Krankenhausaufenthalt in Wien in Betracht, was ihm zuvor immer als zu teuer erschienen war. Nach zehntägigem Aufenthalt in der laryngologisch-rhinologischen Universitätsklinik übersiedelte er in das Sanatorium Hoffmann in Kierling. Kafkas Ärzte in Wien am Ende seines Lebens Im Mittelpunkt dieses Buches stehen Kafkas Begegnungen mit den Ärzten in Wien, die seine letzten Lebenswochen begleiteten. Erstmals in Buchform wurden, soweit möglich, zu diesen Ärzten biografische Hintergrundinformationen ergänzt, zumal sich unter Kafkas Behandlern einige damals namhafte HNO-Ärzte und Internisten befanden. Ihre Lebensgeschichten, aber auch die Darstellung von Kafkas Behandlungen in seinen letzten Lebenswochen bieten einen interessanten Einblick in die Geschichte der Oto-Rhino-Laryngologie in Wien sowie in die Medizin zur Zeit der Ersten Republik, als größtenteils zugewanderte Mediziner aus den peripheren Gebieten der untergegangenen K-.u.-K.- Monarchie in Wien wirkten.
