Invitation: APSE Reading Circle - Natalie Alana Ashton - Creating a Strong Foundation for Neurodiverse Epistemology

Dear all, we warmly invite you to the next APSE (Applied Philosophy of Science and Epistemology) Reading Circle. The talk will be held by Natalie Alana Ashton (University of Sterling). When: Thursday, 27.3.2025, 15:00 - 17:00 Where: HS 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien) Creating a Strong Foundation for Neurodiverse Epistemology Autistic people have had unprecedented success building effective epistemic communities online. A detailed analysis of the conditions and practices which produced and sustain these communities would be illuminating for both the epistemology of social media and the emerging area of neurodiverse epistemology. However, epistemology has only recently begun to theorise about marginalised groups, and many of its foundational principles are ill-suited to this work. In this talk I'll outline a planned project to develop a novel approach to neurodiverse epistemology, which challenges some of the fundamental assumptions of the early, exploratory literature, and lays the groundwork for a participatory methodology which can do real justice to neurodiverse communities. Speaker Bio: Natalie Alana Ashton works on the political and social aspects of epistemology, and is interested in how oppression and power effect political deliberation in the online sphere. In the past she has focused on theoretical issues (exploring how to integrate feminist standpoint theory and hinge epistemology, whether these views should be understood as relativist, and what that means). Her current work is on the practical applications of such views: what they tell us about social media legislation, platform design, and online communities. Friedrich Stadler; LIT Verlag) zeichnet die Museologin, Kuratorin und Kunstvermittlerin Hadwig Kraeutler Wittlins Lebensweg sorgfältig nach. Welche persönlichen und historischen Kontexte wurden in dieser „ExilBiografie“ wirksam? Gibt es Zusammenhänge zwischen Alma Wittlins „österreichischeuropäischen“ Erfahrungen und ihrem späteren, interdisziplinären Wirken? Mit zwei Leseproben aus Wittlins Buch Isabella. Begründerin der Weltmacht Spanien (1936) und im Gespräch mit Robert Streibel werden Wittlins schriftstellerische Arbeit und ihr Pioniereinsatz beim Internationalen PEN vorgestellt. Dear all, The PACE and KiC Projects cordially invite you to the next talk of the Metaphilosophical Talk Series by Amie Thomasson, Dartmouth College Title: Starting a step back: Functional Pluralism and the Work of Metaphysics Date: March 27th, 2025 (Thursday) Time: 16:45-18:15 Location: Hörsaal 50, Hauptgebäude (2.Stock, Stiege 8) - Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien Abstract: Metaphysics traditionally answers questions such as “Are there properties, universals, numbers, composite artifacts, fictional characters…?’ ‘(If so), what are they like? How are they related to minds, physical objects, etc.? Does ‘positing’ these things add explanatory power to our theories?’… In this paper I will argue that we should begin our questioning back a step, and begin by asking: “How does talk of properties, numbers, ... enter language, and what functions does it serve?” For doing so (I will argue) enables us to reevaluate many classic metaphysical debates, to reassess prominent criteria used in metaphysics, and to redirect metaphysics to more fruitful pursuits. In order to answer philosophical questions that arise from our real-world practices, it theorises critical agency with the help of ethnographic resources, such as thick descriptions, field work, interviews, etc. The project thereby develops an ethnographically informed political epistemology that studies the interaction between socio-political and epistemological aspects of critical agency. _Job description:_ - Research and publication activities in the following areas: social and political philosophy, critical theory, political (i.e. feminist and critical race) epistemology, social epistemology, ethnographically informed philosophy - Focus on theories of resistance and analysis and on methodological issues in ethnographically informed philosophy - Collaboration with the project leader (resulting in joint paper publication) on how to evaluate critical projects and the role that the interaction of the two logics of critique (resistance and analysis) plays in it - Content-related and organisational support of the project leader, mentoring of the doctoral student, participation in the activities of the CRITICAL AGENCY research group The research work can be carried out as part of a philosophical habilitation project or in the form of article publications for further academic qualification. _Requirements:_ Completed university degree and doctorate in philosophy on a topic relevant to the project. _Desirable:_ - Experience in collaborative research projects - specialised focus and knowledge in the areas of philosophy relevant to the project (documented by academic publications), especially knowledge in the fields of social and political philosophy and critical theory - experience in ethnographic field work and/or access to an ethnographically interesting field (e.g. through activist work). This notably includes the fundamental principles of geometry and physics. With scientific changes such as non-Euclidean geometry and relativistic physics, there arose the question whether the Kantian a priori ought to be revised in the light of the best current theories or replaced by pragmatic considerations or conventions. This talk will offer a review of the progressive relativization of the Kantian a priori from the Marburg School of neo-Kantianism to Hans Reichenbachs early work. It will then use Paps taxonomy to differentiate among these early relativizing strategies and to contrast them with attempts to relativize the Kantian a priori in contemporary philosophy of science. Short Bio Francesca Biagioli is Associate Professor of History of Philosophy at the University of Turin. Previously, she has been a postdoc at the University of Vienna and at the Zukuftskolleg-University of Konstanz, and a visiting fellow in the Pittsburgh Center for Philosophy of Science. Her research focuses on different traditions within the neo-Kantian movement including Marburg neo-Kantianism, critical realism, the Neo-Friesian School, and on the epistemological views of philosopher-scientists such as Hermann von Helmholtz, Henri Poincaré, Hermann Weyl, Federigo Enriques. She has published the monograph Space, Number, and Geometry from Helmholtz to Cassirer and articles in journals including HOPOS, Studies in History and Philosophy of Science, British Journal for the History of Philosophy, Philosophia Mathematica.

With two Nobel laureates, E. Schrödinger and A. Zeilinger, for their contributions to the foundations of quantum mechanics, and hundreds of active researchers, Vienna is now recognized as one of the strongholds for quantum foundations. But how did this come about? In this historical journey, we will explore how such a fertile ground for foundational research emerged from a unique cultural milieu dating back to Vienna’s intellectual golden age, when physics and philosophy were deeply intertwined. We will also examine how the rise of Nazi-fascism disrupted this thriving environment and how Viennese institutions struggled to reconstruct modern physics after WWII. Moreover, the postwar era’s pragmatic approach to physics, epitomized by the motto „shut up and calculate,“ relegated quantum foundations to almost taboo status. Even J. Bell, whose inequalities paved the way for quantum nonlocality and quantum information science, received little recognition for his foundational contributions during his lifetime. We will see that, while this was also apparently the case in Vienna, physics and philosophy were never fully disentangled, and foundational interest kept smoldering under the ashes of pragmatism. Date: 20/03/2025 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3A Abstract: Strategic science skeptics criticize scientific claims solely to promote non-epistemic (for instance, political and economic) goals. Strategic science skeptics present arguments to support their criticisms of scientific claims. In this paper, I will analyze and debunk a neglected argument exploited by strategic science skeptics: the argument from scientific revolutions (aka the "Galileo gambit"). According to this skeptical argument, strategic science skeptics liken themselves to key figures in scientific revolutions throughout the history of science - in particular, to Galileo Galilei - in order to enhance the credibility of their own claims. In this talk, I will argue that the argument from scientific revolutions is not sound, because at least one of its premises (stating that skeptics are, like Galileo Galilei, revolutionary scientists) is false.
