VDP - Poster Contest - Dies Facultatis - Registration

Dear VDP members, once again we are organising a poster competition at the Dies Facultatis (see below). The idea is to present your research project, or part of it, to a general audience on an A0 poster, either in German or English. In the contest, the public will vote for the poster they like best in the field of philosophy, and the person whose poster gets the most votes will receive a 200 euro voucher from Facultas (https://www.facultas.at/home). The Faculty of Philosophy and Education will reimburse the cost of printing the poster (reimbursement contact: Ulf Thalhammer <ulf.thalhammer(a)univie.ac.at>). Please send me a message by March 28 to let me know if you want to participate in the contest, so that we can reserve a place for your poster. You are welcome to attend the Dies Facultatis (see invitation below) even if you are not presenting a poster. Abstract: According to a Fregean view recently revived in higher-order metaphysics, predicates do not denote objects, construed as any kind of thing a name could denote, but must denote things of a fundamentally different logical type. A common route to that conclusion is via Russell's Paradox, but this doesn't do much to illuminate what it is about names and predicates that prevents them from both denoting kinds of objects. This paper critically examines more linguistically oriented arguments that attempt to establish the negative Fregean conclusion by reflection on the nature of predication, or how names and predicates combine to form truth-apt sentences in the first place. I begin with two such arguments but conclude that, properly situated in a general syntactic and semantic framework, they remain unconvincing. I then reconstruct a third argument, inspired by Wittgenstein's picture theory of meaning, showing that something in a sentence must indeed have a semantic function other than that of denoting an object. New ECTs rules: There are new rules for the distribution of the compulsory 24 ECTS credits in your programme. The rule that doctoral students must complete 15 ECTs in doctoral seminars has been removed, and the distribution of the 24 ECTs will be decided between you and your supervisor in the Doctoral Agreement, and modified through the Annual Progress Reports. The Director of Studies will approve the proposed distribution, taking into account whether or not it is beneficial either to your PhD project or to your training and career. No registration necessary, just show up. Each Writing Afternoon consists of 4 writing sessions, each session comprises 50 minutes of writing and 10 minutes of peer interaction/break. The 1st day of the conference will focus on theory, covering empirical and philosophical research on cognition and its interpretations. The 2nd day will focus on various political, social and epistemic issues considered through the lens of empirical research. On the 3rd day, the conference will be centered around future directions of research in cognitive science, and its broader implications, based on the work presented during the first two days. The conference will coincide with the Cognitive Science Hub’s Annual Lecture which will take place in the Großer Festsaal on one of the two nights of the symposium. The participants of the conference will also be invited to attend the lecture and the proceeding reception. Throughout the conference, we will cover the following topics: • Conceptual change • Predictive Processing • Anticipation and Perception • Uncertainty and Reasoning • Activism in Science • Epistemic Trust • Addressing Climate Change • The Erosion of Democracy We welcome submissions from PhD students as well as postdoctoral researchers at early stages of their career. Contributions need not be limited to empirical research and can address the aforementioned issues from broadly philosophical and political perspectives. Initial discussions with the Editor-in-Chiefs have taken place, and final confirmation will follow the commencement of the mentoring scheme, including comments by Prof. Sorin Bangu (Bergen). = Special Issue Focus The SI will focus on Ludwig Wittgenstein's influential yet underexplored work in logic and the philosophy of mathematics. While we invite submissions on classical themes, we are particularly interested in exploring intersections between Wittgenstein's ideas and fields such as the philosophy of mathematical practice, ethnomathematics, and artificial intelligence. Ludwig Wittgenstein remains one of the most impactful philosophers of the 20th century. His contributions to logic and mathematics, however, are often overshadowed by his other works. This Special Issue aims to highlight Wittgenstein's perspectives on language, logic, and mathematics, emphasizing their relevance to modern philosophical questions concerning the formal sciences. There is little agreement on the place of markets, the nature of property, the justifiability of taxes, the importance of workplace democracy, the injustice of economic inequality, and, generally, the merits of capitalism and socialism. While debates on economic justice often take place within specific political camps, where many assumptions are shared, the Dortmund Disputes take a different approach. The idea of the Dortmund Disputes is to foster debate across political boundaries. It seeks to bring together open-minded scholars with diverse political outlooks--whether liberal egalitarian, libertarian, socialist, conservative, or otherwise--who are committed to our shared goal of advancing our understanding of economic justice. The keynote speakers for the first installment of the Dortmund Disputes are Miranda Fleischer and Nicholas Vrousalis. Miranda Fleischer is Richard and Kaye Woltman Professor in Finance at University of San Diego's School of Law. Her work focuses on ethical and legal issues surrounding taxation, wealth and wealth transfer, and charitable giving. She's the co-author of a recent book on Universal Basic Income. Nicholas Vrousalis is Associate Professor in Practical Philosophy at Erasmus University Rotterdam [9]. His work revolves around distributive ethics, democratic theory, and the history of political philosophy, with emphasis on Kant, Hegel, and Marx. This year's topic will be *The Logic of Reasons*. The event will take place July 21-25 at the University of Hamburg. Description: In this course we will deal with the logic of reasons, that is, general structural constraints on the reason-for relationship, where the emphasis will be on the logic of epistemic reasons, that is, reasons for belief. We will review some of the existing literature on this topic (Horty, Spohn, Nair, ...) and then turn to a new approach to the logic of epistemic reasons in which reasons correspond to vectors that act on a subject's subjective probabilities. This is a fantastic opportunity for researchers engaged in phenomenological work to showcase their research and connect with colleagues.
