The event aims to bring together graduate students and experienced researchers whose work touches on the philosophical challenges posed by socio-epistemic structures in which the transmission of truth is "filtered", i.e., systematically modified. Catarina Dutilh Novaes on Synthetic Philosophy - Metaphilosophical Talk Series

Dear all, The PACE and KiC Projects cordially invite you to the next talk of the Metaphilosophical Talk Series by Catarina Dutilh Novaes, VU Amsterdam Title: Synthetic philosophy and the social epistemology of argumentation Date: June 25th, Wednesday Time: 16:45-18:15 Location: SE 2H, Neues Institutsgebäude (NIG/2. Stock) Abstract: A methodological orientation that has gained some traction within philosophy in recent years is so-called ‘synthetic philosophy’ (Schliesser 2024). It is characterized by extensive engagement with research in relevant (empirical and conceptual) disciplines to inform philosophical inquiry, and by the attempt to formulate unifying explanations for findings coming from different fields. Thus understood, I have myself been deploying the synthetic method for many years (Dutilh Novaes, 2012) (Dutilh Novaes, 2020), even if not using the term itself (which I adopted circa 2018). Other self-declared synthetic philosophers include Philip Kitcher (Kitcher 2012) and Neil Levy (Levy 2021). In this talk, I will present and defend the synthetic philosophy orientation, illustrating it in particular by means of my research project on the social epistemology of argumentation in recent years. The foundational idea of this research, i.e., the ‘glue’ that allowed for synthesis, is a conceptualization of argumentation as a form of _epistemic exchange_. On the basis of this conceptualization, I engaged extensively with research on exchange in the social sciences (in particular sociology and anthropology) to inform my inquiry into the socio-epistemic mechanisms at play in argumentative processes, and in particular the role of power relations therein. The presentation will include a brief preview of my forthcoming monograph _Reason and Power in Argumentation_, which summarizes the main findings of the project. We look forward to seeing you! Erinnerung: Workshop Erreichbarer Frieden, 13.06.2025

Erreichbarer Frieden – Eine interdisziplinäre Annäherung Friedenskonzeptionen unterscheiden sich in der Art und Weise, wie sie Frieden begreifen: Philosophische Ansätze diskutieren einerseits ideale Vorstellungen von Frieden, andererseits konkrete Handlungsnormen, wie etwa in der Tradition des gerechten Krieges. In der Soziologie wird erreichbarer Frieden als ein messbarer Zustand der Konfliktbewältigung verstanden. Politisch könnten wir ihn als Ausgestaltung von Machtverhältnissen oder die verhandlungsgeleitete, praktische Umsetzbarkeit eines Nicht-Kriegszustands verstehen. Der Workshop zielt darauf ab, diese Perspektiven miteinander ins Gespräch zu bringen. Im Zeitalter der Wiederaufrüstung Europas stellen sich moralische, politische und institutionelle Fragen nach der Erreichbarkeit von Frieden: Was macht einen erreichbaren Frieden aus? Wie können wir ihn disziplinübergreifend begreifen? Macht ein erreichbarer Frieden den Diskurs über idealisierte Friedensvorstellungen obsolet? Der praktische, epistemische oder politische Stellenwert der Hoffnung ist umstritten. Der Band soll interdisziplinär Beiträge aus der Philosophie und Psychologie/Psychotherapie sammeln. Er verfolgt dabei zwei zusammenhängende Ziele: Erstens soll explorativ erkundet werden, wie die Disziplinen den gemeinsamen Gegenstand verstehen und welche Vorannahmen der interdisziplinären Verständigung und gegenseitigen Bereicherung im Weg stehen könnten. Zweitens sollen zusammengehörige Fragestellungen zur Hoffnung zusammengebracht werden. Zu diesen Fragen gehören u. a. begriffliche („Was ist Hoffnung?"), normative („Was darf ich hoffen?" oder „Was sollen wir hoffen?"), empirische („Wie entsteht Hoffnung?") und lebenspraktische („Wie kann ich Hoffnung kultivieren?"). Our account of welfare has implications for ethics; but do ethical considerations also provide reasons to adopt one or another theory of welfare? Wittgen=steine talk this Friday

Dear All, The next talk in the "Wittgenstein=steine" series is this Friday (June 13th) at 3pm in room NIG 3D. The speaker is Konstantin Deininger, and his title is: _"On the Material and Formal Aspects of (Moral) Certainty"_. Abstract: Does morality have a binding character in the sense that chains of justification come to an end? In this talk, I will affirm this question and argue that we can plausibly distinguish between formal and material aspects of moral certainty. As a starting point, I will interpret Wittgenstein's idea of "bedrock," introduced in §217 of the Philosophical Investigations, as standing for the end of a chain of reasoning. In doing so, I align with certain Wittgensteinian interpreters who maintain that some chains of moral reasoning end with certainty. However, I will arrive at deviating conclusions by demonstrating that different kinds of moral certainties function in different ways. Wittgensteinian scholars such as Cora Diamond and Nigel Pleasants correctly identify the formal aspect of moral certainty, showing that some propositions resist justification and doubt. However, the candidates for formal certainties they propose do not fully satisfy the criteria of certainty. This, I argue, is due to their failure to adequately distinguish between the formal and material aspects of certainty. Material certainties, such as Diamond's "slavery is unjust and insupportable" or Pleasants' "killing is wrong," remain intelligible to some extent and are thus subject to justification and doubt. Still, these propositions function as regress stoppers by putting an end to the chain of reasoning--but they do not mark the boundary of the unintelligible as formal certainties do. Drawing on Wittgenstein's later writings, I will argue that only formal certainties--which I refer to as transcendental certainties--are entirely exempt from justification and doubt. I identify the principle "equals are to be treated equally" as a plausible candidate for transcendental certainty. This certainty is foundational to moral reasoning and enables moral thought.
