The notion of "natural kinds" is ubiquitous in philosophy, sometimes problematized, sometimes taken for granted. Even though the terminology of 'natural kinds' got introduced rather recently (in the 19th century), philosophical thought about natural kinds is present already in Greek Antiquity. This workshop on natural kinds, featuring presentations by students, aims to critically reflect on the notion of natural kinds in a diversity of philosophical contexts. Dear doctoral students, in the upcoming summer semester, elections for the new doctoral student representatives will take place. As per usual, all members of the committees will be newly elected. The term of office is two years starting from winter semester 2026/27. As members of the VDP Steering Committee and the Stuko 43, representatives play a crucial role in shaping the doctoral school and the study programme while advocating for the interests of their peers. Following our announcement at the last Doctoral Student Assembly, we want to invite potential candidates to express their interest and to submit a short statement of purpose for the spring election. There is a multitude of voices, some focussing on historical accounts, others connecting closely to the most recent psychological research; some scholars work in a phenomenological tradition, others use methods of analytic philosophy. Topics also vary widely, from epistemic problems in accessing the mental life of others to the significance of empathy for moral agency; from embodiment and interactionism about empathy to evolutionary perspectives or the psychopathology of empathy. To help you cultivate steady writing habits and enjoy a supportive academic community, we warmly invite you to our weekly Writing Evenings. What: VDP Writing Evenings — dedicated time for focused writing and reading Who: Open to Philosophy MA, PhD, Postdocs, and anyone in between When: Every Monday, 14:00–18:00, starting 2 March 2026 Where: Room 3A, NIG, Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Vienna Registration: Not required — just come by. If you can’t make it exactly at 14:00, that’s no problem; we only ask that you join at a full hour to avoid interrupting the focused writing phases. Employment can start in October 2026 or earlier. The contracts are for three years. The PhD students will be supervised by the Director, Prof. Vincent C. Müller, and a Research Fellow at PAIR. They benefit from an excellent research environment and a well-organised support structure. We are looking for a candidate with clear intellectual and academic excellence, capable of good teamwork, with an international outlook, and good English proficiency. The specific topic of the PhD will be developed in year one. Fruitful areas of research may include: agency, intention, perception, limits of machine-learning, AI in education & research, AI and philosophical method, well-being, and human rights. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that neural computation differs fundamentally from classical computation. Key aspects of what it means to compute in a neural context are under debate. For example, to what extent is neural computation medium-independent, or is it tied to the biological substrate of the brain? What is the status of deep learning models in computational neuroscience? What kind of models are they--engineering or scientific--and how do they explain neural phenomena? How does neural computation relate to, or differ from, analog and digital computation as understood in traditional computer science? This workshop brings together philosophers and researchers from other fields to address these questions and develop a clearer understanding of computation in neural systems.
