1. Leadership Update
Prof. Benjamin Schnieder has returned to his role as Director of the
Vienna Doctoral Programme (VDP) and the Doctoral Programme of
Philosophy.
Please continue any pending business previously handled by the interim
Director, Prof. Arne Moritz, directly with Prof. Schnieder.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. VDP Coordinator Consultation Hours
Starting this semester, I will be offering consultation hours every
Tuesday (working days only) from 10:00 to 11:00 during the winter
semester 2025 (WiSe25).
You are warmly welcome to visit my office (B-0301, NIG) to discuss any
matters related to your doctoral studies — including supervision, event
organization, training opportunities, or funding options.
You may inform me in advance if you wish to present your case
beforehand, but no prior scheduling is required for these consultation
hours.
For meetings outside the consultation time, please write to VDS
Philosophy at vd.philosophy(a)univie.ac.at with the subject line “Request
for meeting”, and include the purpose of the meeting as well as your
full availability.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Supervision and co-supervision
It is advisable that meetings with supervisors take place once per
month, and they should occur at least once per semester.
If this is not the case, please feel free to contact the VDP office for
advice regarding your supervision. All such matters are handled with
strict confidentiality.
Please also keep in mind that co-supervision and thesis advisory
committees are practices encouraged by the University of Vienna to
enhance the quality of PhD supervision. See:

6. Profile and U:Cris
Please send or update your profile information for our webpage. See
samples at
https://vd-philosophy.univie.ac.at/members/phd-researchers/
To further outreach your academic activities and work, please use
u:cris. This comes with several advantages:
You have the opportunity to showcase your research and outreach
activities on the official research platform of the university. This
option is available to all PhD students.
The Doctoral School gains a better overview of publications and
activities, which might support future budget decisions.
What to do:
Log in with your u:account credentials at:
https://ucrisportal.univie.ac.at/en/ (scroll down to the bottom of the
page to sign in).
Add any information you’d like to have displayed (e.g. publications,
talks, outreach).
You also have the option to link your u:cris profile on the VDP website
under your name:
https://vd-philosophy.univie.ac.at/members/phd-researchers/
To do so, simply send an email to the VDP, subject “u:cris profile”
If you have any technical questions, please contact the u:cris-team
directly!

10. The Feedback Foyer
The VDP is launching a Peer Feedback Exchange Forum this semester, which
will take place twice during the term.
To participate, you’ll need to register and provide some details about
the text you plan to submit so we can pair you with a suitable peer.
During each session, participants will be assigned a peer’s text to
review. You’ll have 90 minutes to read and prepare your feedback,
followed by 30 minutes dedicated to discussing the feedback together.
Dates:

DELEUZE 100. EIN DELEUZIANISCHES JAHRHUNDERT? AKTUALITÄTEN,
PERSPEKTIVEN, ZUKÜNFTE [1]
Tagung an der Universität Wien
14./15. November 2025
internationale _Deleuze and Guattari Studies Conference_ laden wir junge
sowie etablierte Forscher:innen im November zu _Deleuze 100_ nach Wien
ein, um die Potentiale eines von Deleuze inspirierten Denkens
auszuloten.
Organisation: Eva-Maria Aigner, Ralf Gisinger, Christoph Hubatschke, Evi
Jägle, Jonas Oßwald
Programm [2]:
Freitag, 14. November, Depot Wien. 18:30: Film | Performance |
Roundtable
Depot - Kunst und Diskussion, Breite Gasse 3
Film: Auszüge aus „L'Abécédaire de Gilles Deleuze" (1989), Deleuze von A
bis Z, Interviews mit Claire Parnet
Performance: Ardan Hussein, Evi Jägle und Jan Barner: „Die
Ausdrucksmaschine. Ein choreographierter Prozess nach Kafka" (2025)
Roundtable: Sandra Lehmann (Universität Wien), Gerald Raunig (ZHdK

Call for Papers (Virtuell, Deadline: 20.10.2025)
Workshop: The Food, Waste, and Sustainability: Synergizing Ontology
Efforts 2025 Workshop
The Food, Waste, and Sustainability: Synergizing Ontology Efforts 2025
Workshop will be held on November 14th as part of the 16th International
Conference on Biological and Biomedical Ontology (ICBO 2025 [2]).
Aim
In the last decades, several initiatives have dealt with developing
ontologies for health, as witnessed by many of the resources provided by
the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology (OBO) Foundry. Recently,
attention has also been given to modeling sustainability issues, which
resulted in ontologies like Sustainability Core Ontology (SCO) [3],
Sustainable Development Goals Interface Ontology (SDGIO) [4],
Sustainable Met Systems Ontology (SuMSO) [5], and Sustainable
Development and Climate (SDC) Ontology [6]. It is imperative to enhance
interconnectedness among these ontologies and related applications. In
particular, it will be important to communicate across different
ontology communities to adequately capture the intrinsic connections
between health and sustainability. This workshop aims at promoting
discussions in this direction, focusing on waste, especially food and
plastic waste, as a starting use case. The choice of this use case is
motivated by the intrinsic relevance that this theme holds both in terms
of human health and food systems sustainability.
Topics of interest for this workshop include, but are not limited to:
* Ontologies, logics, and semantics for sustainability and health.
* Conceptualizations and models of food and plastic waste.
* Ontologies of plastic pollution, including micro- and nanoplastics
* Ontology applications to reduce and upscale waste in food systems.
* Initiatives to synergize sustainability and health ontologies and
applications across ontology communities.
Important Dates
* Paper submission deadline: 20 October
* Abstract submission deadline: 20 October
* Notification of acceptance: 30 October
* Camera-ready papers: TBD according to ICBO2025 schedule.
* Workshop Date: November 14, 2025
Location: Fully remote.
Time and Duration: 4-7 pm CET.
Submission Guidelines
The workshop accepts both papers and abstracts for presentation
addressing at least one of the aforementioned topics of interest. For
each paper or abstract presentation accepted, at least one author must
register.
We welcome the following submission categories:
* Full-length papers: 7-10 pages (Including references).
* Short papers: up to 6 pages (Including references).
* Abstract: up to 2 pages (excluding references)
Please follow the guidelines for ICBO2025 main track submissions [7] to
format both papers and abstracts. Regarding the AUTHOR-AGREEMENT form,
follow ICBO2025 guidelines and upload within your submission.
Submission Link
Please submit your work, in Word or PDF format, at the following link:
https://cmt3.research.microsoft.com/ICBO2025/Submission/Index (Please

Dear VDP members,
As we have committed all the funding for conferences this year, requests
for conferences until December will only be considered for approval if
they are directly related to the applicant's dissertation topic.
Whatever the case, it would be higlhy appreciated if requests could be
kept as economical as possible.
Thank you for your understanding and support,
Raphael

Konferenz: Lug, Trug und Fake News: Über Formen der Unaufrichtigkeit
Lug, Trug und Fake News: Über Formen der Unaufrichtigkeit
Internationale Tagung der Deutsch-Polnischen Gesellschaft für
Philosophie
Erfurt, 4.-6. Juni 2026

Call for Papers (Dortmund, Deadline: 01.02.2026)
Konferenz: 2nd Dortmund Disputes on Economic Justice
Keynotes: Chiara Cordelli (University of Chicago), Bas van der Vossen
(Chapman University)
The annual 'Dortmund Disputes on Economic Justice' serve as a forum for
discussing questions of economic justice, including the role of markets,
the nature of property, the justifiability of taxes, the importance of
workplace democracy, the problem of economic inequality, and, more
generally, the merits of capitalism and socialism. While debates on
economic justice often occur within specific political camps, the
Dortmund Disputes aim to foster discussion across political boundaries
by bringing together scholars with diverse outlooks--liberal
egalitarian, libertarian, socialist, conservative, or otherwise--who
share the goal of advancing our understanding of economic justice.
Following the successful first installment in 2025 [6], which featured
Miranda Fleischer and Nicholas Vrousalis, the second installment will
take place on June 25-26, 2026. The keynote speakers are Chiara Cordelli
and Bas van der Vossen. Chiara Cordelli, Professor of Political Science
at the University of Chicago, works on social and political philosophy,
especially political economy and democratic theory. She is the author of
_The Privatized State_ (2020), a Kantian critique of privatization that
develops a democratic theory of public administration. Bas van der
Vossen, Professor in the Smith Institute for Political Economy and
Philosophy and the Philosophy Department at Chapman University, works on
political philosophy, with a focus on political economy, global justice,
and property rights. His books include _In Defense of Openness_ (2018)
and _Debating Humanitarian Intervention_ (2017).
We invite scholars to apply with an abstract of around 500 words for a
40-minute talk. Abstracts will be selected based on their quality, fit
with the spirit of the conference, and alignment with the research
interests of the keynote speakers. They should be sent as PDF
attachments to Karina Janke [karina.jahnke(a)tu-dortmund.de], prepared for
blind review. The deadline for submission is February 1, 2026.
