Initial discussions with the Editor-in-Chiefs have taken place, and final confirmation will follow the commencement of the mentoring scheme, including comments by Prof. Sorin Bangu (Bergen). = Special Issue Focus The SI will focus on Ludwig Wittgenstein's influential yet underexplored work in logic and the philosophy of mathematics. While we invite submissions on classical themes, we are particularly interested in exploring intersections between Wittgenstein's ideas and fields such as the philosophy of mathematical practice, ethnomathematics, and artificial intelligence. Ludwig Wittgenstein remains one of the most impactful philosophers of the 20th century. His contributions to logic and mathematics, however, are often overshadowed by his other works. This Special Issue aims to highlight Wittgenstein's perspectives on language, logic, and mathematics, emphasizing their relevance to modern philosophical questions concerning the formal sciences. Submissions may address topics from Wittgenstein's early works, such as the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, his later writings like the Philosophical Investigations, or his contributions to the philosophy of mathematics. The idea of the Dortmund Disputes is to foster debate across political boundaries. It seeks to bring together open-minded scholars with diverse political outlooks--whether liberal egalitarian, libertarian, socialist, conservative, or otherwise--who are committed to our shared goal of advancing our understanding of economic justice. The keynote speakers for the first installment of the Dortmund Disputes are Miranda Fleischer and Nicholas Vrousalis. Miranda Fleischer is Richard and Kaye Woltman Professor in Finance at University of San Diego's School of Law. Her work focuses on ethical and legal issues surrounding taxation, wealth and wealth transfer, and charitable giving. She's the co-author of a recent book on Universal Basic Income. Nicholas Vrousalis is Associate Professor in Practical Philosophy at Erasmus University Rotterdam [9]. His work revolves around distributive ethics, democratic theory, and the history of political philosophy, with emphasis on Kant, Hegel, and Marx. This year's topic will be *The Logic of Reasons*. The event will take place July 21-25 at the University of Hamburg. Description: In this course we will deal with the logic of reasons, that is, general structural constraints on the reason-for relationship, where the emphasis will be on the logic of epistemic reasons, that is, reasons for belief. We will review some of the existing literature on this topic (Horty, Spohn, Nair, ...) and then turn to a new approach to the logic of epistemic reasons in which reasons correspond to vectors that act on a subject's subjective probabilities. Hot desks for VDP students without contracts

Dear VDP Members, Our Director Benjamin Schnieder, our Student Representative Lisa Tragbar, and I have been working over the past few months to address one of the most critical issues facing our doctoral school, namely the provision of office space for students without contracts at the University of Vienna. The purpose of this message is to inform you of the results of our work and negotiations with the department's stakeholders. We will start A pilot project this summer semester (see attachment), opening two hot desks. We expect to expand the number of hot desks to seven, depending on the results of the pilot. Since this is a pilot project, we need to ask you to sign up for it. In the enclosed documents you will find an explanation of how to do it. I must also ask you to strictly follow the rules. This is extremely important because the results of the pilot will ultimately depend on how you, as a community of students, are able to work together. I am confident that the results will be optimal. Speitel (IVC Fellow) Mathematical Determinacy Philosophy of Science Colloquium The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows. Date: 06/03/2025 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3A Abstract: The existence of non-standard models of important mathematical theories, such as first-order Peano-Arithmetic, threatens to undermine the claim of the moderate mathematical realist that non-mysterious access to mathematical structures is possible on the basis of our best mathematical theories. The move to frameworks stronger than FOL to articulate ‘better’ versions of these theories is denied to the moderate realist on the grounds that it merely shifts the indeterminacy ‘one level up’ into the meta-theory by — illegitimately, — assuming determinacy of the notions needed to formulate such logics. In this talk I want to outline the beginnings of a response to the determinacy challenge facing the moderate mathematical realist. I argue that the unique determinability of notions that enable categorical characterizations of important mathematical structures provides grounds for claiming naturalistically acceptable access to these structures, sufficient to resolve the determinacy challenge. I will illustrate the idea by showing how the mathematical realist may achieve arithmetical determinacy, and discuss ways to extend this approach to richer mathematical theories.

Dear all, I am delighted to invite you all to the fourth installment of the Trans*formations talk series at the Department of Philosophy, University of Vienna. The talk series provides insights into recent developments in trans* philosophizing. The next talk, "On the Cass Review: A Philosophy of Science Perspective" will be given by Emelia Stanley, University of Vienna, on March 11, 2025, at 16:30 in HS 2 (NIG). Abstract: The Cass Review was a report commissioned by NHS England in 2020 to recommend new practice guidelines in transgender healthcare for children and adolescents, as well as to document problems with the existing gender identity services. Following its release last year, it was cited by both major political parties to justify the wholesale closure of the services, a halt and then ban on the prescription of puberty blockers to under 18s, and the suspension of a pending law to outlaw conversion-therapy. A valuable case study as a piece of scientific research and communication, this presentation examines the scientific Cass Review from a philosophy of science perspective, evaluating its conclusions and methodology with respect to notions of evidential norms, standpoint epistemology, prejudicial attitudes, and the current paradigm for trans* healthcare. Bio: Emelia Stanley is a Philosophy PhD candidate at the University of Vienna. She is pursuing a thesis in the philosophy of logic and mathematics, but writes independently about trans* issues in the UK and abroad from a personal and philosophical perspective. September 2025 Universität Passau. _Metaphern, Beispiele, Narrationen - Literarische Texte und Stilmittel in Argumentationen der Praktischen Philosophie_ Organisation: Marie Hirsch und Johanna Sinn (Universität Passau) Welchen Stellenwert haben literarische Texte für die Philosophie und insbesondere für die Ethik? Literarische Mittel wie die Metapher wurden von Aristoteles „bis ins 18. Jahrhundert hinein fast ausschließlich als rhetorische Figur betrachtet" und galten im philosophischen Text lange als verpönt, ja sogar als „fehlerhaft" (Weinreich 2017). Dagegen hält Blumenberg Metaphern für „genuine Denkmodelle, die Erkenntnis beförder[n]" (ebd.). Im „literary turn" der analytischen Moralphilosophie wird das Verhältnis von Ethik und Literatur ebenfalls neu entdeckt (vgl. Hämäläinen 2016: 17-24). Positionen, die Literatur als eigenständiges Medium ethischer Überlegungen verteidigen - u.a. Peter Winch, Cora Diamond, Iris Murdoch und Martha Nussbaum - vertreten dabei häufig ein weites Verständnis von Moralphilosophie. Diese soll nicht nur klare Prinzipien guten Handelns bestimmen, sondern sich umfassender mit Moral auseinandersetzen, etwa in Fragen zum guten Leben, zu Emotionen, Wahrnehmung oder Tugenden. Literatur gilt dabei als Ort dieser Auseinandersetzung - und zwar möglichst die Lektüre ganzer Werke, nicht die Verwendung einzelner literarischer Elemente (Vgl. Brudney 1990: 418; Hämäläinen 2016: 18f). Denn die ästhetische Integrität literarischer Texte sei entscheidend für die moralphilosophische Relevanz von Literatur. Literatur wandert aber oft auch in kleineren Ausschnitten und Formen in philosophische Argumentationen - in Form von Beispielen oder anderen narrativen Formen und in weitreichenden, aber unauffälligen Metaphern. Das Panel möchte Verwendungsweisen literarischer Texte in der praktischen Philosophie nachgehen, mit Beiträgen z.B. zu folgenden Fragen: * Wie verhält sich Literatur zu praktischer Philosophie? Welchen Wert hält sie für ethische Überlegungen bereit? * Welche Metaphern und Metapherntypen gibt es in der praktischen Philosophie? Wie funktionieren sie? However, philosophical exploration of the topics at the intersection of semantics and memory is still in its early stages.
