Dear all,
You are hereby invited to the next "Physics meets Philosophy" talk
(organized in cooperation with the Institute for Quantum Optics and
Quantum Information) by
Martin Kusch (University of Vienna)
Title: Wittgenstein and the Vienna Circle on Science and Relativism (see
abstract below)
Date: January 21st (Wednesday)
Time: 14:00-15:30
Location: IQOQI Seminar room (Boltzmanngasse 3, 2nd floor)
Zoom link (for those that cannot join in person):
https://univienna.zoom.us/j/62477829358?pwd=ClSjluALepJo9eqDxcrHz24QImDtu7.1
Abstract:
I argue that there is a common theme in the later Ludwig Wittgenstein,
in Philip Frank and Otto Neurath: that the philosophy of science needs
to take seriously social-scientific perspectives on the sciences, and
that such perspectives come with commitments to relativism.

Dear All,
The next talk in the "Wittgenstein=steine" series is this Friday (June
13th) at 3pm in room NIG 3D.
The speaker is Konstantin Deininger, and his title is:
_"On the Material and Formal Aspects of (Moral) Certainty"_.
Abstract:
Does morality have a binding character in the sense that chains of
justification come to an end? In this talk, I will affirm this question
and argue that we can plausibly distinguish between formal and material
aspects of moral certainty. As a starting point, I will interpret
Wittgenstein's idea of "bedrock," introduced in §217 of the
Philosophical Investigations, as standing for the end of a chain of
reasoning. In doing so, I align with certain Wittgensteinian
interpreters who maintain that some chains of moral reasoning end with
certainty. However, I will arrive at deviating conclusions by
demonstrating that different kinds of moral certainties function in
different ways. Wittgensteinian scholars such as Cora Diamond and Nigel
Pleasants correctly identify the formal aspect of moral certainty,
showing that some propositions resist justification and doubt. However,
the candidates for formal certainties they propose do not fully satisfy
the criteria of certainty. This, I argue, is due to their failure to
adequately distinguish between the formal and material aspects of
certainty. Material certainties, such as Diamond's "slavery is unjust
and insupportable" or Pleasants' "killing is wrong," remain intelligible
to some extent and are thus subject to justification and doubt. Still,
these propositions function as regress stoppers by putting an end to the
chain of reasoning--but they do not mark the boundary of the
unintelligible as formal certainties do. Drawing on Wittgenstein's later
writings, I will argue that only formal certainties--which I refer to as
transcendental certainties--are entirely exempt from justification and
doubt. I identify the principle "equals are to be treated equally" as a
plausible candidate for transcendental certainty. This certainty is
foundational to moral reasoning and enables moral thought. I illustrate
its role through debates on justice in animal ethics.
Everybody welcome!
Best wishes from the organizers,
Esther Heinrich-Ramharter

Call for Papers (Sonderband, Deadline: 31.07.2026)
Synthese: Artificial Joint Intentionality: Skilled Social Interactions
in the Age of AI
With the rapid progress in generative AI technology, we find ourselves
at the beginning of an AI revolution. AI systems typified by Large
Language Models (LLMs) invite us to treat them as conversational and
thought partners. These systems will play an increasingly significant
role in our social world. To understand their impact, this Topical
Collection proposes to combine foundational work from philosophy on the
nature of joint skilled action, including the role of social
affordances, with the analysis of interactive AI systems that may have
the potential to qualify as partners in social agency.
Many skills essential for us as social agents can only be expressed with
others or involve others as social objects. The concept of an
affordance, which picks out action opportunities in an agent's
environment, can be extended to opportunities for social action, that
is, to social affordances that include other social agents presenting
social action opportunities.
Given the conversational interface between humans and artificial systems
such as LLMs, we can expect to perceive or rely on social affordances in
human-machine interactions: AI systems such as LLMs and social robots
are designed to provide social cues and thereby offer opportunities for
the expression of social action. AI systems now occupy various social
roles--as collaborators, companions, friends, counselors, and even
therapists--raising a host of theoretical, practical, and ethical
questions about their capacity to produce and interpret social cues.
Appropriate topics for submission include, among others:
* What are the commonalities and differences between human-human,
human-machine, and machine-machine interactions?
* What is missing in interactions in which machines are involved in
comparison with human social interactions? What are the practical and
ethical implications? Can (and if so, should) artificial systems be
trained to be skilled "partners" in joint activities with human
partners?
* Can artificial systems based on generative AI technology (like LLMs)
qualify as genuine agents and, in particular, social agents? How might
social ontological accounts of group agency be brought to bear on
candidate generative AI agents?
* To what extent do they genuinely present social affordances? To what
extent do they have social skills?
* How should we conceptualize the abilities of artificial systems that
may play roles in joint intentional activities?
* Does it make a difference whether a human agent conceptualizes the
AI system as a tool, as opposed to a partner, in a joint activity?

Open Access Initiative: Announcing a new Diamond Open Access journal:
Philosophical Logic
All Editors-in-Chief and Associate Editors of the Journal of
Philosophical Logic, currently published by Springer Nature, have
informed Springer Nature of their resignation. Some of the editors will
continue working for Springer Nature for a limited period. They will
keep processing papers through the review and publication pipeline for
the Journal of Philosophical Logic until the end of their terms.
The Journal of Philosophical Logic was founded in 1972 by Nicholas
Rescher with Bas van Fraassen serving as the first Editor-in-Chief. It
was originally published by D. Reidel Publishing, later by Kluwer, and
finally by Springer. In accordance with The Journal of Philosophical
Logic Charter, an Executive Board has overseen the selection of editors
for the journal.
Today marks the launch of a new Diamond Open Access journal,
Philosophical Logic (https://www.philosophical-logic.org [5]), published
by the Open Library of Humanities (OLH) (https://www.openlibhums.org
[6]) and not affiliated with Springer Nature or the Journal of
Philosophical Logic published by Springer Nature. The undersigned
support efforts to make academic research--produced, refereed, and
curated by scholars--as accessible as possible to both the academic
community and society at large. We are encouraged by several recent
launches of Diamond Open Access journals in Logic and Philosophy,
including Zeitschrift für Mathematische Logik und Grundlagen der
Mathematik (https://zml.international [7]), as well as Political
Philosophy (https://politicalphilosophyjournal.org [8]) and Free and
Equal (https://freeandequaljournal.org [9]), both published by OLH,
following successful launches of Diamond Open Access journals in nearby
fields, such as Glossa (https://www.glossa-journal.org [10]) and Open
Mind (https://direct.mit.edu/opmi).
Philosophical Logic welcomes original research in all areas of
philosophical logic. The new journal will maintain the same high
editorial standards that we upheld at the Journal of Philosophical
Logic. In our view, hiring and promotion committees should regard
publication in Philosophical Logic as no less significant than
publication in the Journal of Philosophical Logic was before.
The undersigned members of the Executive Board have been part of the
Journal of Philosophical Logic as authors, reviewers, or editors for
decades. It is the view of the Executive Board that Rescher's vision of
a journal serving the philosophical logic community lives on with
Philosophical Logic. We are grateful to OLH for committing to long-term
funding of Philosophical Logic.
We thank the philosophical logic community for its support in the launch
of Philosophical Logic, and we look forward to receiving your
submissions at https://www.philosophical-logic.org [5]!
Sincerely,
The outgoing Editors-in-Chief of the Journal of Philosophical Logic and
incoming Editors of Philosophical Logic

Thomas Icard, Stanford University, USA
Francesca Poggiolesi, CNRS, IHPST, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne,

*********************************************
The Chair of Logic and Philosophy of Language (held by Professor Hannes
Leitgeb) at LMU Munich, based in the Faculty of Philosophy, Philosophy
of Science and Religious Studies and the Munich Center for Mathematical
Philosophy, seeks to appoint at the earliest possible date two
postdoctoral positions, each for the duration of 3 years.
Your responsibilities:
* Independent and collaborative research in the thematic area of the
logic of reasons (logical/formal systems for the analysis of epistemic
or practical reasons, relationship between reasons and
doxastic/epistemic logic, deontic logic, hyperintensional logic,
conditional logic, non-monotonic logic, belief revision, ranking
functions, subjective probability, formal epistemology, formal action
theory, formal ethics, decision theory, philosophy of logic) and
dissemination of such research through publications and participation in
seminars, conferences, and workshops.
* Participation in other activities at the Chair (research,
administration, conference and workshop organisation, and, if desired,
teaching).
Your profile:
* Candidates should have successfully completed their university
studies with a doctoral degree in philosophy or a suitably related field
(e.g. in logic or computer science). The doctoral degree must have been
awarded by the beginning of the contract.
* Candidates should have a record of producing high-quality research,
as evidenced by publications and/or publishable writings of
international standard, commensurate with their career stage.
* Candidates should have a strong analytic, logical, and (depending on
their research area) mathematical orientation and aptitude.
* Candidates should be capable of engaging in teamwork.
* The primary language of the Chair, especially in research, is
English. Candidates should therefore be able to work in English, with
respect to both research and (if desired) teaching.
The Chair is part of the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy
(https://www.mcmp.philosophie.uni-muenchen.de [2]) at LMU Munich.
Conditions of employment:
The salary will be calculated according to group E 13 TVL-employment.
The positions are limited to three years. Successful applicants will
also have funds available to attend workshops and conferences.
Given broadly equal qualifications, preference will be given to
candidates with disabilities. We especially encourage women and
candidates from underrepresented groups to apply.
Application procedure:
Applications should be written entirely in English and should include:
* a cover letter that addresses the candidate's academic profile and
their motivation for applying for the advertised positions,
* the sketch of a research proposal in the logic of reasons of
maximally five pages,
* a CV with a list of publications and/or PDF-files of unpublished
manuscripts.
These materials should be collated into a single PDF document and sent
to applications.leitgeb(a)lrz.uni-muenchen.de by 31.01.2026. The subject
line of the email should include "Postdoc application" and the name of
the applicant.
Furthermore,
* two confidential letters of recommendation
should also be sent directly to applications.leitgeb(a)lrz.uni-muenchen.de
by 31.01.2026.

two doctoral fellows (TV-L E13, 65% part-time), each for the duration of
3 years.
The two doctoral fellows will be part of a new project group that will
be devoted to the logic of epistemic reasons (reasons for beliefs) and
of practical reasons (reasons for actions). The project will deal with
questions, such as: How can we logically analyze the reason-for
relation? Which general laws does that relation obey? How can reasons
relate to each other logically? How does the logic of reasons relate to
other logical or formal systems?
Your responsibilities:
* Doctoral research in the thematic area of the logic of reasons

Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter:in (Postdoc) (m/w/d) | 3 Jahre
The LanCog Research Group [2], University of Lisbon, welcomes
expressions of interest from suitably qualified candidates interested in
applying for 3-year research positions funded by the Fundação para a
Ciência e a Tecnologia [3] (FCT).
The FCT is the Portuguese national funding agency for academic research
and development. In 2026, the FCT will fund the hiring of 400
researchers, holders of PhDs at various stages of career, to carry out
their activity in research centres throughout Portugal. The selected
researchers are hired by the host institution through a contract between
the host and the FCT, which guarantees the funding. In the previous
edition, 18 positions have gone to philosophers, and LanCog has a very
strong record of supporting successful candidates.
The FCT will accept applications until January 29, 2026 (17:00 Lisbon
time). Candidates will apply online directly to the FCT, but their
application must be supported by a host institution.
The application, written in English, must include the following:
- A research plan, including a description of the main activities to be
undertaken, the expected results, as well as an indication of how the
research project fits with (at least one of) the goals set out in the
United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development [4];
- A brief description of previous academic and scientific experience,
highlighting the main activities and results obtained in the last 5
years;
- Curriculum vitae;
- A plan for the development of the candidate's career, including a
description of the main scientific goals and how this position would
contribute to their achievement;
- A brief description of the conditions provided by the host institution
and of how the proposed research plan fits into the overall strategy of
the research centre.
Applications will be assessed by an international panel, according to
the following two criteria:
- The candidate's CV;
- The proposed research plan.
The applicant is responsible for choosing the appropriate category in
which to apply (Junior: up to 5 years' experience, Assistant: open to
all applicants but is correspondingly far more competitive):
Junior researcher: PhD holders with up to 5 years of post-doctoral
experience in the scientific area of application - 2.351,53EUR gross
wage (c. 1785EUR/month net*);
Assistant researcher: PhD holders with relevant experience
(independently of its duration) in the scientific area of application -
3.501,28EUR gross wage (c. 2362EUR / month net*).
It is mandatory to upload the doctoral diploma. In order to comply with
the Portuguese legislation concerning the recognition of foreign
qualifications, all the doctoral degrees granted by foreign higher
education institutions must be duly recognized. Applicants are advised
to visit the website of the Direção-Geral do Ensino Superior (DGES) for
further information:
https://www.dges.gov.pt/en/pagina/degree-and-diploma-recognition.
If possible, the recognition certificate (or proof that one has been
requested) should be uploaded together with the diploma. Applications
will be considered even if the recognition certificate is not available.
However, the recognition must be obtained before signing the contract.
More information about the call, including a link to the application
portal, is available here [5].
Interested candidates are invited to contact Dr. David Yates (at
david.yates(a)edu.ulisboa.pt), with a brief description of their intended
research and current CV no later than January 7.

Call for Papers (Kirchberg am Wechsel, Deadline: 07.04.2026)
Konferenz (studentische Veranstaltung): 50 Years International
Wittgenstein Symposium
50 Years International Wittgenstein Symposium
Scientific Organisers: Christian Kanzian (Innsbruck), Volker Munz
(Klagenfurt), Joseph Wang-Kathrein (Innsbruck), Anja Weiberg (Vienna)
50 years have passed since the First International Wittgenstein
Symposium - at that time it was called "Wittgenstein-Tage" - took place
at "Hotel Post" in Kirchberg am Wechsel in Lower Austria. From April 24
to 26 1976, Elisabeth Leinfellner, Werner Leinfellner, Rudolf Haller,
Paul Weingartner, and Adolf Hübner gave presentations on Wittgenstein.
Their topics ranged from biographical remarks on Wittgenstein to
philosophy of language, logic, and philosophy of mathematics. Still
today, 50 years later, the impact of Ludwig Wittgenstein across various
disciplines and beyond can hardly be overstated. Wittgenstein's life and
philosophy not only form the basis of the work of countless
philosophers; but they also influenced scholars in other scientific
disciplines and inspired artists to create new works.
Each year, the International Wittgenstein Symposium in Kirchberg am
Wechsel (Austria) is dedicated to a different subject, bringing
Wittgenstein and Wittgensteinian philosophy into dialogue with other
areas of philosophical inquiry. The 2026 Symposium, however, is to be
devoted to Ludwig Wittgenstein and his work in celebration of the 50th
anniversary of the IWS. We welcome contributions to any of the following
sections:
* Ludwig Wittgenstein: Life - Work - Editions
* Ludwig Wittgenstein: Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Science,
Epistemology
* Ludwig Wittgenstein: Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics
* Ludwig Wittgenstein: Philosophy of Psychology, Philosophy of Mind
* Ludwig Wittgenstein: Ethics, Aesthetics, Philosophy of Religion,
Philosophy of Culture
* Ludwig Wittgenstein: In Interdisciplinary Contexts (Literature,
Music, Visual Arts...)

Call for Papers (Sonderband, Deadline: 15.04.2026)
Zeitschrift für Praktische Philosophie: Privatsphäre in digitalen
Umgebungen
Call for Papers: Privatsphäre in digitalen Umgebungen
finden: https://www.praktische-philosophie.org.
