Dear VDP colleagues,
During the Doctoral Assembly in the winter semester, the question arose as to how outreach and other academic activities can be made visible (apart from ECTS recognition). As discussed in the Doctoral Student Assembly during the summer semester, you could use u:cris, the official research platform from the University of Vienna, for this purpose.
This comes with several advantages:
* You can showcase your research and outreach activities on the official research platform of the University. This option is available to all PhD students, not just those employed at the University of Vienna.
* The Doctoral School gains a better overview of publications and activities.
What to do (if you want to use this service):
1. Log in with your u:account credentials at: https://ucrisportal.univie.ac.at/en/ (scroll to the bottom of the page to sign in).
2. Add any information you'd like to display (e.g. publications, talks, outreach).
3. You also have the option to link your u:cris profile to the VDP website under your name: https://vd-philosophy.univie.ac.at/members/phd-researchers/
Send an email to vd.philosophy(a)univie.ac.at<mailto:vd.philosophy@univie.ac.at> to request that your u:cris profile be linked to your profile on the VDP website.
If you have any technical questions, please contact the u:cris team directly.
Best,
Lisa

Graduate Workshop "Explaining Explaining" 2025
University of Vienna, Austria
September 1-3, 2025
We are pleased to announce the Graduate Workshop on "Explaining
Explaining" to be held in Vienna from September 1-3, 2025. The
workshop is organized under the auspices of, and funded by, the Vienna
Doctoral School of Philosophy (VDP).
THEME
Explanations recur as a constant and central theme in philosophy:
philosophers contend that in mathematics, proofs are favoured for
their explanatory values; in the sciences, theories are selected
according to explanatory virtues they exhibit; in metaphysics,
explanatory relations direct our accounts of concepts and ontological
priority; in philosophy more broadly, we offer and compare
explanations for facets of reality in order to resolve conceptual
problems.
CONFIRMED SPEAKERS
Prof. Dr. Francesca Poggiolesi (CNRS, Paris)
Prof. Dr. Chiara Lisciandra (Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf)
Prof. Dr. Benjamin Schnieder (University of Vienna, Vienna)
Fourth speaker to be confirmed
SUBMISSIONS
We invite graduate students (Master and PhD) to present their original
work on topics related to the philosophy of explanation at the
workshop. That includes approaches from different areas, including but
not limited to logic, metaphysics, philosophy of science and so on.
The time allocated for each presentation is 30 minutes, including
discussion. Students from underrepresented groups are particularly
encouraged to apply to promote diversity and equity in academia.
Abstracts (up to 500 words, references not included) should be sent in
PDF file format to workshop.explaining(a)gmail.com.
Please make sure to include your name, affiliation and the title of your
paper.
In case you need financial support, please write a brief statement of
financial aid. We can partly fund travel/accommodation expenses.

Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Jennifer Whyte (IVC Fellow)
TOWARDS A WAISMANNIAN THEORY OF CONCEPTUAL ENGINEERING
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium
with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 10/04/2025
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS
3A
Abstract:
Much philosophical attention has recently been paid to Conceptual
Engineering - or, the intentional modification of concepts by
philosophers in order to achieve epistemic, ethical, or political ends.
The most controversial aspect of conceptual engineering are its aims,
but there is also much debate over the mechanism by which the process
could even be carried out. In this project, I will propose a mechanism
derived from the work of Friedrich Waismann by which intentional
conceptual amelioration can - and does - occur. I will then argue that
this account of conceptual engineering solves a number of standing
problems in the literature, but in doing so, places some key checks on
the ambition of conceptual engineering as a project.

We are pleased to invite six contributed talks for a GAP Satellite
Workshop "Similarity after Carnap - Perspectives from Philosophy and
Cognitive Science", taking place right after the GAP.12 on 12th and 13th
September at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf. The event aims to
bring together researchers from philosophy and psychology to discuss the
development of the concept of similarity following Carnap's "Aufbau",
the subsequent famous criticism by Nelson Goodman and its influence on
psychological theories. We welcome contributions to topics such as:
* Carnap's conceptions of similarity (e.g, recollection of similarity,
quality spaces, analogical inference)
* The prospects and problems of quasi-analysis and related tools of
similarity-based category formation in psychology and philosophy
* Goodman's criticism against similarity and its influence on
similarity concepts within cognitive science
* Tensions between different conceptions of similarity in philosophy
and psychology (e.g., spatial accounts versus feature-matching)
* Advantages and limitations of explaining cognitive development in
terms of similarity
This is our current list of confirmed speakers
* Javier Belastegui Lazcano (Logic, Cognition, Language and
Information, University of the Basque)

Veranstaltungsankündigung (Karlsruhe), 23.05.2025 - 24.05.2025
Workshop: The Idea of Moral Progress in the Utilitarian Tradition
Workshop
*The Idea of Moral Progress in the Utilitarian Tradition*
23-24 May 2025
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe/Germany
From its earliest days onwards, the (secular) utilitarian tradition has
always seen itself as on the side of moral progress, against
conservative and "sinister" interests. Even opponents of the doctrine
often concende that, in retrospect, utilitarians were often right to
oppose discriminatory laws and customs. The idea of progress has also
been used by utilitarians as an argumentative resource against competing
normative theories. This workshop aims to combine systematic and
historical perspectives and to explore questions such as:
- How have utilitarians thought about the idea of moral improvement?
- How and why do they differ?
- How might their views have changed over time?
- What role does this idea play in their philosophical outlook?
Speakers:
- Eleonora Buono (Lausanne/Switzerland)
- Giulia Cantamessi (Pavia/Italy)
- Roger Crisp (Oxford/United Kingdom)
- Julia Driver (Austin/USA)
- Annette Dufner (Bielefeld/Germany)
- Frauke Höntzsch (Augsburg/Germany)
- Helen McCabe (Nottingham/United Kingdom)
- Michael Schefczyk (Karlsruhe/Germany)
- Cyriak Schmitz (Karlsruhe/Germany)
- Christian Seidel (Karlsruhe/Germany)
This event will be a modified pre-read workshop: We will distribute
extended handouts (rather than full papers) to participants about a week
in advance. Registration by email (office.seidel(a)itz.kit.edu) by 14 May
2025 is required. Please also let us know if you plan to attend the
conference dinner (on 23 May 2025).

Veranstaltungsankündigung (Regensburg), 28.05.2025 - 30.05.2025
Konferenz: Tocquevilles Demokratietheorie und die Krise der Demokratie
_Democracy in Crisis: Tocqueville's Theory of Democracy and Its
Relevance in the Age of (Global) De-Democratization_
Liberal democracy is in crisis worldwide. Not only in comparatively
young democracies but also in time-honored ones such as the US, the
foundations of liberal, constitutional democracy are crumbling.
As early as the 19th century, Tocqueville presented a groundbreaking
theory of democracy, examining both its bright and dark sides as a form
of society and government in America and Europe. While current political
theory - especially radical democratic theory - focuses on criticism of
liberal democracy and its swan song, we aim to revive Tocqueville's
theory of democracy and use it in four systematic panels to ask whether
liberal democracy can be saved rather than abandoned.
Our goal is to build a bridge between an analysis of the current
phenomena of the democratic crisis and the reconstruction of the central

Dates and Location:
The conference will be held at Bielefeld University in Bielefeld,
Germany, from June 11th to June 13th as an in-person event, with no
online participation available. It will begin on the evening of June 11
with a keynote talk by Jonathan Dancy. All other talks will be held on
June 12th and 13th.
Summary:
The aim of this conference is to explore the interrelations between
different normative properties and different hypotheses about what
ultimately unifies them, with a particular focus on whether these
properties can be understood in terms of reasons. The talks and
discussions will examine the connections between reasons, value,
obligation, justification, ought, fittingness, and other key normative
notions central to different philosophical subfields, including ethics,
epistemology, and the philosophy of emotions. These discussions will
have implications for the reasons first program and aspire to improve
our understanding of the nature of the normative.
The conference is organized by Benjamin Kiesewetter and Shane Ward
(Department of Philosophy, Bielefeld University) as part of the
ERC-funded project _REASONS F1RST - The Structure of Normativity_. For

Veranstaltungsankündigung (München), 27.06.2025 - 28.06.2025
Konferenz (studentische Veranstaltung): The Syntax and Semantics of
Formalisations in Philosophy (SSFP)
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the upcoming international conference at LMU
Munich:
The Syntax and Semantics of Formalisations in Philosophy (SSFP)
This interdisciplinary conference aims to investigate how formalisation
techniques influence both the syntactic and semantic representation of
philosophical concepts, and how such techniques can be used to address
core philosophical questions. The event will bring together researchers
working on the intersection of philosophy, logic, formal semantics, and
related areas.
Our program will feature four keynote lectures:
- Anna Brożek (University of Warsaw)
- Georg Brun (University of Bern)
- Sven Ove Hansson (Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm)
- Catarina Dutilh Novaes (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam)
There will also be eight talks by contributed speakers:
- Carolin Antos (University of Konstanz)
- Ludovica Conti (University of Vienna)
- Michael Hladky (University of Geneva)
- Patricia Marino (University of Waterloo)
- Perceval Pillon (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne)
- Lassi Saario (University of Helsinki)
- Nevo Spiegel (Tel Aviv University)
- Bobby Vos (University of Toronto)
Besides these talks, there will also be a poster session where graduate
students of LMU are given the opportunity to present their relevant
work.
We warmly invite all scholars working in relevant fields to attend, as
well as anyone interested in formal philosophy. Since space is limited,
we recommend that you register early using this registration form:

Dear all,
we are delighted to invite you to the next instalment of the APSE talks series, as well as to the accompanying reading circle prior to the talk. The talk will be given by Remco Heesen (LSE).
When: Thursday, 10.04.2025, 15:00 - 17:00
Where: HS 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien)
The Division of Cognitive Labour under Poisson Productivity
When a community of academics faces a research problem and multiple methodological approaches to solving it, how much effort should they devote to each approach to maximise their chances of solving the problem and minimise the time to a solution? This problem is known as the division of cognitive labour (DCL). More specifically, Philip Kitcher, Michael Strevens, and Kevin Zollman have asked whether and to what extent academics’ expectations of credit for solving the problem can act as an invisible hand to produce an efficient DCL without a need for top-down planning. Here I revisit this question using a modelling framework (key ingredient: academic productivity follows a Poisson distribution) that has more empirical support than Kitcher’s, Strevens’, and Zollman’s, and is also more flexible in that it can be used to address broader questions about credit incentives. The somewhat surprising finding is that in this framework the DCL problem becomes essentially trivial. I’d like to discuss implications for how we think about the model and/or the DCL problem.
Reading Circle:
When: right before the talk - Thursday, 10.04.2025, 13:00 - 15:00
Where: same place - HS 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien)
To get the reading material for the Reading Cycle, please contact vinzent.fischer(a)univie.ac.at<mailto:vinzent.fischer@univie.ac.at>
Please share this invitation with anyone who might be interested!
Best wishes,
Sophia Crüwell

Dear VDP Researchers,
the Director of Studies Philosophy (Studienprogrammleitung Philosophy)
publishes a call for applications for "external" teaching in the
department of Philosophy every year.
The current SPL Michael Staudigl has informed about the respective
procedures and opportunities for predocs / PhD students in one of our
Pragmatic Academic events in January, this year.
In the context of the current call for applications for the year
2025/26 Paulina Sliwa and Max Kölbel asked us to invite you to an
information meeting about external teaching that is organised by the
Cluster of Excellence Knowledge in Crisis.
The meeting is open to all PhD students in the department and will take
place on
Tuesday 8 April from 14:00-15:00 in Room 3A, NiG.
(see information below)
In order to make it possible for everyone to attend, the VDP Writing
Afternoon will start at 3pm instead of 2 pm on this day.
+++ KiC Information session for all PhD students on teaching at the
Department +++
Paulina Sliwa and Max Kölbel will host an information session on the
opportunities for doctoral students to take on paid teaching within the
bachelor programmes of the philosophy department. (Third-party-funded
PhD students are asked to submit their requests by April 10th, while
others can apply by April 20th.) The aim of the session is to provide
participants with information about the application and selection
process and to answer their questions during the session.
This session will take place on Tuesday 8 April from 14:00-15:00 in
Room 3A, NiG.
We encourage all PhD students considering teaching opportunities to
attend!
