They guide us, among other things, in satisfying desires, in being morally upright, or in acquiring knowledge. However, it is not easy to see what different kinds of norms there are, how different kinds of norms are linked to each other, and how we should deal with norm conflicts. In particular, so-called epistemic norms, which somehow pertain to the formation, maintenance, or revision of beliefs, are in many ways hard to align with moral or prudential norms, which concern more practical matters. At the conference, we will discuss novel insights and ideas on questions like the following: * How do norms, reasons, and values relate to each other? Are they rooted in our actual aims and desires, or are they largely independent of what we in fact feel and want? * How do moral, prudential, epistemic, and other kinds of norms relate to each other? For instance, do we have non-moral and non-prudential reasons to comply with epistemic norms, or are epistemic norms merely instrumentalist in the sense that they depend on non-epistemic aims? * What kinds of norms govern such activities as making assertions or inquiring into the truth of some proposition? More generally, to what activities do moral, prudential, and epistemic norms respectively extend? * Is there a way to balance norms of different kinds, and if yes, how? Is there something like an all-things-considered ought, and if yes, how can it integrate moral, prudential, social, and epistemic requirements? * When are we to blame for violating norms? Is there a distinctive epistemic kind of blame? And what are the interrelations between blame, responsibility, and direct voluntary control over actions, intentions, and beliefs? * Are our most essential norms internalist (subjectivist) or externalist (objectivist) requirements? The event will feature Kate Vredenburgh from the London School of Economics, who works in the philosophy of social science, political philosophy, and the philosophy of technology, and who was recently awarded a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship for a project on the future of work. The first day of the conference is reserved for presentations from speakers selected via a call for papers. Kate Vredenburgh will be present to respond to the papers. On the same day, she will also give a public keynote lecture. On the second day, we will hold a student workshop on Vredenburgh's work. _Conference Themes_ The conference will engage with themes from Vredenburgh's work, in particular philosophical perspectives on artificial intelligence (AI) and on the future of work. Concerning AI, Vredenburgh investigates the moral implications of the use of opaque AI systems in the institutions of our society, arguing for a right to explanation. She has developed an ethically informed picture of algorithmic bias, and proposed an account of how we should respond to such bias from the perspective of justice and fairness. She is also an advocate of a right to explanation in the context of AI, based on explanation's relevance in protecting the possibility of informed self-advocacy. Regarding the future of work, Vredenburgh's research focuses on the impact of AI on the workplace. She draws on egalitarian theories of justice and argues that AI should be deployed so as to enable more equality at work, and she maintains that opaque AI contributes to working conditions which undermine workers' autonomy while alienating them from their work. It welcomes scholars working on the manifold philosophical, societal, economic, geopolitical, or historical dimensions of this challenging topic. As a name-giver for this program, Patočka’s critical investigations into the history of philosophy, the meaning of modernity, (post)colonialism, war, technology, and the dialectics of enlightenment offer exemplary––though by no means exclusive––fields of research. Shared Office - Winter Semester Registration

Dear VDP Members, I am writing to ask if you would like to register for hot office space at the NiG for the next semester. Please only register if you plan to use the office (A0327B NiG) regularly, i.e., at least twice per week during the semester. One problem during the pilot program was registration without regular attendance. We would like to avoid this issue in the upcoming semester, as number of registrations are limited. Thus, please think about whether you can make such a commitment before registering. If you registered for the pilot program last semester, you must register again for the upcoming semester. If you do not intend to register or do not register, please return the keycard to the VDP office (B0301, NiG) as soon as possible. Please respond to this email by the end of the month. The Future of Climate Change Science", funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The starting date for employment is February 1st, 2026 or soon thereafter. Scientific context of the project: In current climate science, there is a strong push towards more detailed and powerful computational models to address the challenges posed by current climate change. However, are bigger models always better? Which epistemic purposes can be reached with higher resolution and new machine-learning methods, and which not? How can the scientific understanding of the climate system be deepened with computational models? How is it related to providing decision-relevant climate change information? Our research project takes current discussions in climate science about the future of the discipline as an opportunity to examine its epistemic foundations with a special focus on values. The climate crisis necessitates a green transformation from a fossil-fuel-based economy to renewable energy production and transportation, yet political and institutional hurdles to achieving a just transition abound. Recent advances in artificial intelligence suggest the possibility that much work currently done by humans will be thoroughly transformed or replaced. Societal transformations raise various philosophical questions, yet discourse on societal transformations that is distinctly philosophical is not always visible in the academic literature, and in some respects underdeveloped. The aim of this special issue is to bring together contributions on the topics of societal transformations and transitional justice, to identify core ethical and political principles and frameworks, as well as conceptual distinctions and clarifications, that can advance scholarship in this field. For instance, large-scale transformations will often create losers and winners - what assistance do we owe to those who, through no fault of their own, find their long-term projects and life plans frustrated? Arguably, some transformations challenge fundamental institutions and basic moral concepts. Do we owe duties to artificial intelligences, and if so, do these duties differ in kind from the ones that we owe to each other? In recent years there has been populist backlash against certain decarbonization policies. Are there any lessons we can learn from this about the desirability, and feasibility, of societal transformations? Other relevant questions include, but are not limited to, the following: * How can functional institutions and long-term governance be procured in transitional processes? * How can epistemic injustices be avoided in societal transformations? * Can insights from social ontology and empirical findings be utilized for a better understanding of societal transformations, including core levers and agents of change? * Do philosophers require specific methods, e.g., "engaged philosophy", to reflect on societal transformations? * What role should risk and uncertainty play in normative theorizing on societal transformations? Original research papers between 3.000 and 10.000 words in length should be submitted by January 31st, 2026. All submissions will undergo MOPP's double-blind refereeing process. Papers will only be accepted for publication in the Special Issue if they are approved for publication by both the journal's editors and the guest editors.
