Emigration und Exil österreichischer Wissenschaft” <https://lit-verlag.de/isbn/978-3-643-66198-2/> Friedrich Stadler (Hg.) als open access Publikation präsentiert. <https://lit-verlag.de/isbn/978-3-643-51187-4/>Sehr lange wurden sie mit ihrer Geschichte vergessen: Dr. Josef Sabath, Dr. Ernst Schidlof und Prof. Oskar Kreisky, Kurt Goldhagen, Emil Maurer und Walter Bondy, Irma Königsberg, Gertrud Raubitschek und Dr. Hedwig Mautner und viele andere: Tausende jüdische SchülerInnen und LehrerInnen wurden 1938 unter der NS-Gewaltherrschaft von ihren Schulen vertrieben. Diese Arbeit dokumentiert die Vertreibungshandlungen an Wiener Gymnasien 1938 und erfasst die Vertriebenen und die Ermordeten namentlich. Die unterschiedlichen Phasen des Erinnerns und Vergessens der Vertreibungsgeschichte in der eigenen Schulöffentlichkeit nach 1945 werden dargestellt. Mit der Analyse der Jahresberichte wird die Auseinandersetzung mit Schulgeschichte, konkret der Umgang mit Erinnerung an die Vertreibungsschicksale am eigenen Schulstandort, thematisiert und reflektiert. *Renate Mercsanits* unterrichtete am Wasagymnasium und an der Radetzkyschule Religion, Englisch und Geschichte und führte dort Gedenkprojekte durch. VDP Writing Afternoons Summer Semester 2025 The VDP Writing Afternoon provides an opportunity for focused work on dissertations and academic texts. They are accessible to philosophy PhD candidates, BA and MA students, or anyone in between. Every Tuesday, 14:00-18:00, in Room 3A, NIG, Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Vienna, it's writing o'clock. On the Cass Review: A Philosophy of Science Perspective - Trans*formations Series The Cass Review was a report commissioned by NHS England in 2020 to recommend new practice guidelines in transgender healthcare for children and adolescents, as well as to document problems with the existing gender identity services. Following its release last year, it was cited by both major political parties to justify the wholesale closure of the services, a halt and then ban on the prescription of puberty blockers to under 18s, and the suspension of a pending law to outlaw conversion-therapy. A valuable case study as a piece of scientific research and communication, this presentation examines the scientific Cass Review from a philosophy of science perspective, evaluating its conclusions and methodology with respect to notions of evidential norms, standpoint epistemology, prejudicial attitudes, and the current paradigm for trans* healthcare. Bio: Emelia Stanley is a Philosophy PhD candidate at the University of Vienna. She is pursuing a thesis in the philosophy of logic and mathematics, but writes independently about trans* issues in the UK and abroad from a personal and philosophical perspective. Tagung für Praktische Philosophie am 25.-26. September 2025 in Passau) _Organisatorinnen:_ Katharina Naumann (Magdeburg/Berlin) & Larissa Wallner (Frankfurt/Berlin) Vor dem Hintergrund der politischen Entwicklungen der vergangenen Jahre lässt sich einerseits eine sich wandelnde Ästhetisierung der Politik beobachten und andererseits eine immer offensichtlicher werdende Politisierung der Ästhetik. Ausgehend von dieser Beobachtung soll das Panel Gelegenheit bieten, über die vielfältigen Wechselwirkungen ästhetischer Erfahrungen einerseits und vorherrschender politischer Strukturen, Moralvorstellungen und Wissensordnungen andererseits nachzudenken. Dabei stellen sich zunächst grundsätzliche Fragen etwa nach der Legitimität einer politischen und moralischen Beurteilung von Kunst; danach, ob das Ästhetische eine bloß vermittelnde Funktion hat oder selbst ein genuiner Teil des Politischen ist; oder auch nach ihrem gesellschaftlichen Transformationspotential - im Guten wie im Schlechten. Fragen dieser Art sollen im Panel vor allem hinsichtlich der politisch-epistemischen Erschließungsfunktion ('disclosure') ästhetischer Darstellungen und Wahrnehmungen diskutiert werden. Je nach metaphysischem Tenor lassen sich ästhetische Praktiken und Erfahrungen als Entdeckung dessen, was immer schon da war oder als metaphysische Konstruktion von Wirklichkeit deuten. Als transformativ lassen sie sich aber in jedem Fall beurteilen, da ästhetische Gegenstände nicht zuletzt durch ihre affektive Dimension eine wirklichkeitsgestaltende Kraft entfalten können, indem sie Perspektiven eröffnen, Bedeutungsverschiebungen initiieren und Sprachspiele in Unordnung bringen. Wie insbesondere zahlreiche Arbeiten aus der feministischen Philosophie, der Queer Theory, der Critical Philosophy of Race und der postkolonialen Theorie deutlich gemacht haben, besitzen (Un)Sichtbarkeit, (Un)Wissen und (Un)Sagbarkeit sowohl eine moralphilosophische Relevanz als auch eine politische Dimension, insofern sie stets durch Interessen und Machtstrukturen mitgeprägt sind. Man denke hier beispielsweise an Debatten um 'white ignorance', epistemische Gewalt und Ungerechtigkeit, Cancel Culture, (standpunkttheoretische) Überlegungen zu epistemischen Privilegien und daraus resultierenden Problematiken wie epistemische Ausbeutung oder 'elite capture'. Erkenntnisse aus diesen Debatten sollen im Panel mit Blick auf die funktionale Wesensbestimmung und Auseinandersetzung mit dem Politischen der Ästhetik diskutiert werden. Wir freuen uns über Einreichungen, die sich u.a. mit folgenden Fragenkomplexen befassen: * Wie können neue Sichtweisen auf die Welt durch ästhetische Praktiken erschlossen werden (Ferrara, Camp) oder erhellt werden (Lorde)? Inwiefern hängt dies davon ab, welche Art von und wessen Kunst rezipiert wird, und wie wirkt sich dies darauf aus, wie wir unser (Zusammen)Leben gestalten? * Inwiefern werden bestimmte Perspektiven und Bedeutungen durch ästhetische Praktiken verschlossen (Lakoff & Johnson)? Und inwiefern schränken andersherum ethisch-politische Perspektiven die ästhetische Wahrnehmung ein ('imaginative resistance')? * Entfalten (nicht-diskursive) Darstellungen, wie Fotografien, Filme, Romane, per se behauptende, affirmative Kraft? Wie trägt das Ästhetische zur epistemischen Verengung und zur Normalisierung von Herrschaftsverhältnissen durch Darstellungen bei (MacKinnon)? * Welche Rolle spielt das Ästhetische bei der Artikulation einer Stimme (Spivak, Cavell), der Konstruktion von Perspektive ('female gaze') oder Menschlichkeit (Butler), der Entwicklung von Identität (Fournier, Hartmann) oder auch authentischen Begehrens (Cixous, Emcke, Preciado)? * Inwiefern haben Kunstproduktion und Kunstkonsum eine befreiende Wirkung (Menke /Rebentisch)? Gibt es bestimmte ästhetische Phänomene, die eine Bedingung von Befreiung darstellen, wie etwa Faszination (Menke) oder der Gebrauch der Erotik (Lorde, Bataille)? * Welche Gefahren gehen einerseits mit dem populistischen Einsatz von Ästhetik einher? Welche Bedeutung haben ästhetische Praktiken andererseits als Formen des Widerstands, etwa in antikapitalistischen und antifaschistischen Kämpfen? * Welche Bedeutung kommt dem Ästhetischen für die Repräsentation und Anerkennung pluraler Lebensformen und Wertesysteme zu? Das Panel wird dann als Ganzes bei der Tagung für Praktische Philosophie eingereicht. ****************************************** (3) CALL FOR PAPERS (Dortmund, Deadline: 31.05.2025) 2nd Dortmund Conference on Philosophy and Society with Kate Vredenburgh (LSE) _October 1-2, 2025_ The Department of Philosophy and Political Science at TU Dortmund University and the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are delighted to announce the 2nd Dortmund Conference on Philosophy and Society, taking place on October 1-2, 2025, in Dortmund, Germany. The event will feature Kate Vredenburgh [2] from the London School of Economics, who works in the philosophy of social science, political philosophy, and the philosophy of technology, and who was recently awarded a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship for a project on the future of work. The first day of the conference will be reserved for up to six presentations from speakers selected via this call for papers. Kate Vredenburgh will be present to respond to the papers. She will also give a public evening lecture. On the second day, we will hold a student workshop on Vredenburgh's work. _Conference Themes_ The conference will engage with themes from Vredenburgh's work, in particular philosophical perspectives on artificial intelligence (AI) and on the future of work. Concerning AI, Vredenburgh investigates the moral implications of the use of opaque AI systems in the institutions of our society, arguing for a right to explanation. She has developed an ethically informed picture of algorithmic bias, and proposed an account of how we should respond to such bias from the perspective of justice and fairness. She is also an advocate of a right to explanation in the context of AI, based on explanation's relevance in protecting the possibility of informed self-advocacy. Regarding the future of work, Vredenburgh's research focuses on the impact of AI on the workplace. She draws on egalitarian theories of justice and argues that AI should be deployed so as to enable more equality at work, and she maintains that opaque AI contributes to working conditions which undermine workers' autonomy while alienating them from their work. _Call for Contributions_ We invite scholars to submit papers for the first day of the conference. The special issue aims to bring together researchers on different areas of derogatory and manipulative language who also discuss the practical implications of their research when it comes to preventing both linguistic derogation/manipulation and its negative effects. Special issue article publications often bring higher citations and visibility than regular papers and attract more relevant readership due to its scope. One such way is the usage of pejorative language. These are individual expressions, such as slurs, or larger linguistic constructions, such as hate speech, that are used to derogate an individual or group because of a certain group identity (e.g. based on race, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or the like) or because of personal characteristics, such as appearance. As a consequence, derogatory language primarily has two functions. First, it can be used to offend or psychologically harm. Second, it can be used to create or reinforce negative attitudes towards the derogated individual or group. For example, most uses of derogatory language for Jewish people in Nazi propaganda had mainly the purpose to create and reinforce anti-Semitic attitudes that would lead to increasing discrimination and violence against Jewish people, to their expulsion or incarceration in concentration camps, and, ultimately, to genocide. In the philosophy of language, the question then arises how linguistic derogation is accomplished. A satisfactory answer to this question should explain both the offensiveness of derogatory language and the fact that it can be used to create and reinforce negative attitudes. Since a comprehensive understanding of language requires an understanding of how language is used to derogate, providing such an explanation is generally seen as a touchstone for the quality and correctness of theories from the philosophy of language. Moreover, a better understanding of how linguistic derogation is accomplished is not only of theoretical interest, but also of practical and ethical relevance. If we can understand how linguistic derogation works, then we can also understand how to prevent or at least contain the negative consequences of its use, and whether such attempts at containment are compatible with, for example, the right to free speech. The discussion of linguistic derogation is often scattered throughout different areas of inquiry, such as slurs, hate speech, or misgendering. Furthermore, the question of how a better understanding of linguistic derogation can help us to prevent or at least contain the negative consequences of its use is often neglected. The ambition of this collection is to close both gaps by bringing together researchers on different areas of derogatory language who also discuss the practical implications of their research. In addition, the issue will discuss phenomena in the vicinity of linguistic derogation, such as linguistic manipulation (e.g., the use of dogwhistles). Die Ausstellung auf der Hochschuletage des Dortmunder Us wird vom Projekt _SAPHIR - Communication and Internationalization_ der philosophischen Institute der TU Dortmund, Ruhr-Universität Bochum und Universität Duisburg-Essen organisiert. Im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung stehen optische Illusionen, Täuschungen und verschiedene Wahrnehmungseffekte, die nicht nur eindrucksvoll veranschaulicht, sondern auch erlebbar gemacht werden. Mit Exponaten zum Betrachten, Anfassen und Ausprobieren lädt die Ausstellung die BesucherInnen zu einer Reise in die Geheimnisse unserer Wahrnehmung ein. The summer school continues a successful tradition, which began in 2014 with eight editions of the summer school on mathematical philosophy for female students and was expanded in 2024 to underrepresented groups. The 2025 "Summer School for Widening Participation in Mathematical Philosophy" is open to women and members of other groups that are under-represented in mathematical philosophy. These groups include under-represented gender identities, races and ethnicities, people with disabilities, people from low income and non-academic family backgrounds. The target level is master students and last year-bachelor students. The school's aim is to encourage students to engage with mathematical and scientific approaches to philosophical problems, and thereby help to redress the under-representation of women and other marginalized groups in mathematical philosophy. Abstract: According to a Fregean view recently revived in higher-order metaphysics, predicates do not denote objects, construed as any kind of thing a name could denote, but must denote things of a fundamentally different logical type. A common route to that conclusion is via Russell's Paradox, but this doesn't do much to illuminate what it is about names and predicates that prevents them from both denoting kinds of objects. This paper critically examines more linguistically oriented arguments that attempt to establish the negative Fregean conclusion by reflection on the nature of predication, or how names and predicates combine to form truth-apt sentences in the first place. I begin with two such arguments but conclude that, properly situated in a general syntactic and semantic framework, they remain unconvincing. I then reconstruct a third argument, inspired by Wittgenstein's picture theory of meaning, showing that something in a sentence must indeed have a semantic function other than that of denoting an object. The Director of Studies will approve the proposed distribution, taking into account whether or not it is beneficial either to your PhD project or to your training and career.
