Dear VDP members, Please find attached the call for participation in Lange Nacht der Forschung 2026. Doctoral School students are welcome to participate individually, or we can participate as a Doctoral School. Presentations can also be given in English. Please note that the audience at the Long Night of Research is very diverse, ranging from children to senior citizens with various educational backgrounds, so contributions should be accessible and easy to understand for everyone. If you would like to participate, please let me know by the end of the week. We can then propose presenting the VDP as a group. You can also apply individually (see the forwarded message). GAP Infomail 46/2025

Wir sind um die Verbreitung der unten stehenden Informationen gebeten worden. Wenn Sie selbst einen Beitrag zur GAP-Info-Mail haben, können Sie uns diesen unter Info-Mail-Portal [1] zukommen lassen. Als wir PhilPublica vor viereinhalb Jahren ins Leben gerufen haben, hatten wir keinen Überblick darüber, wie vielfältig die Philosophie zu Themen, die auch außerhalb der Akademie von Interesse sind, in den Medien präsent ist. In diesen Tagen ist der 2500. Beitrag erschienen, der, wie es der Zufall will, eines der #erklärt-Videos auf unserem GAP-YouTube Kanal ist: https://youtu.be/-sbDYn35U4o. In dieser Serie, die in Kooperation mit dem vom BMBF geförderten Projekt "Bildersturm" entstanden ist, erklären Philosophinnen zentrale philosophische Themen oder wichtige Schlüsselbegriffe, wie etwa _Glück_, _Wissen_, _psychische Krankheit_, _Fake News_ oder _moralische Wahrnehmung_. It offers an open space to present and discuss the participants' current projects. The colloquium is organized jointly by LMU's Center for Religion and Philosophy, the Chair for Philosophy of Religion (Sebastian Gäb) and the Romano Guardini Chair (Ana Honnacker). For roughly a quarter of a century, the idea of the Anthropocene - the 'age of humankind' - has shaped discourse across the sciences, the humanities, and the arts. Although the concept originated in geoscience, it functions not only as a diagnosis of the planet's current geophysical condition (often used synonymously with the various ecological crises) but has also triggered significant shifts in how concepts such as nature, history, and agency are understood. The term Anthropocene has thus become a catalyst for reflection on the relationship between human and non-human nature and a prompt to reconsider fundamental philosophical categories. While areas such as environmental philosophy, religious studies, and theology have taken up this challenge and explored topics like the role of religious traditions in ecological issues, or proposed alternative anthropologies, the philosophy of religion appears to have been only marginally affected by these developments. The colloquium invites contributions that seek to bring the discourse on the Anthropocene into dialogue with the philosophy of religion and to explore possible reconfigurations, both in terms of subject matter and methodological approach. It shall address questions like: Which concepts and frameworks from the philosophy of religion could enrich or refine our ways of speaking about the Anthropocene? How does, or should, the discourse on the Anthropocene transform the ways we reflect on religion? Should traditional religious cosmologies be revised in light of the Anthropocene? We're currently accepting proposals for organizing and leading our next year's Summer School. Deadline: 10 November 2025 23:59 (CET) Funding: The VDP will cover organizational costs for the conferences, as well as travel expenses for international and local instructors. How to apply? Interested parties should submit a proposal for the upcoming Summer School, which should not exceed 2-3 pages. The proposal should include: 1. Suggested title(s) 2. A description of the summer school 3. Target audience(s) (e.g., late master's students, PhD students, postdocs) 4. Dates 5. Organizing team, including VDP members, postdocs and faculty (ideally up to 4 to 5 members) 6. List of possible instructors 7. Description of the teaching formats (lectures, workshops, group discussions) and daily activities 8. A detailed budget plan (summer schools may charge a fee). FÖP - Preregistration - Doodle

Dear VDP members, The SSC Philosophy has asked whether we could make an estimate of the people planning to register on the FÖP in the next two dates. If you are in that situtation, please provide that information using the following doodle form. You can only click one option. This information will help the SSC to try accomodating all possible participants. If you could pre-register soon, thus, it would be very helpful. Please do so if you have trust you can be able to register timely. ---- The faculty public presentation (FöP) is the first mandatory step for all DSPL43 doctoral candidates in the entry phase, following admission to the doctoral programme. It is a prerequisite for the official approval of the dissertation topic and for concluding the doctoral thesis agreement. The FöP must be completed within the first year of study. For the winter semester 2025/26, four presentation dates with four slots each are scheduled: 3 December 2025 – Application deadline: 12 November 2025, 12:00 noon 14 January 2026 – Application deadline: 17 December 2025, 12:00 noon Please submit your complete application on time and as early as possible via the SSC Servicedesk. Due to the high number of applications, preferred presentation dates cannot be guaranteed. Dear all, This is a kind reminder for tomorrow's talk of the PACE/KiC Metaphilosophical Talk Series by Barbara Vetter, Freie Universität Berlin Title: Metaphysical modality as a natural kind Date: October 30th, 2025 (Thursday) Time: 16:45-18:15 Location: Seminarraum 1, Hauptgebäude (Tiefparterre, Stiege 9, Hof 3) - Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien Abstract: What is metaphysical modality? Philosophers disagree deeply about both the nature and the extent of metaphysical modality. How can we, in the presence of such wide-spread disagreement, get a common grip on what it is that we are disagreeing about? I propose an answer to this question that takes „metaphysical modality" to function much like a Kripkean natural kind term, and argue that it best regiments our debate about metaphysical modality. This can be seen as a case study of how to deal with similar disagreements elsewhere in philosophy. I close with some reflections on how widely applicable my approach is beyond the case of metaphysical modality. We look forward to seeing you! November 2025 am Institut für Philosophie der TU Dresden stattfindet. Der Workshop bringt verschiedene Perspektiven auf das Verhältnis zwischen affektiver und epistemischer Ungerechtigkeit sowie auf Formen motivierter Ignoranz zusammen. [5] Kontaktadresse: JANA.STERN(a)TU-DRESDEN.DE Anmeldefrist: 05.11.2025 (9) Essay Competition: Does Liberty Upset Patterns? _Description:_ The "Liberty, Equality, and Utility: Assessing the trade-offs between individual liberty, well-being, and material equality" project at the Université de Fribourg, funded by the John Templeton Foundation, invites essay submissions on the question: "Does Liberty Upset Patterns?". This prize competition aims to encourage new work on tensions between commitments to individual liberty and 'patterned' goods, broadly construed to include commitments to equality, priority, Pareto-optimality, and more. There are of course well-known challenges for reconciling these commitments. Using his widely-discussed Wilt Chamberlain example, Nozick pressed a challenge for reconciling commitments to individual liberty and patterned views of distributive justice. Sen, in his influential paper, "The Impossibility of a Paretian Liberal", pressed another challenge for reconciling commitments to individual liberty and a weak Pareto condition. Particular essay topics could include, but are not limited to, how to measure individual liberty/freedom, patterned views of distributive justice, game theoretic accounts of rights, and philosophical discussions of any relevant formal results in social choice theory and/or welfare economics. _Prizes:_ First prize will receive 4,000 CHF and an invitation to present at a conference in June 2026. Second prize will receive 2,000 CHF. Third prize will receive 1,000 CHF. _Details:_ Submissions up to 12,000 words (including footnotes, excluding references) should be fully anonymised and submitted via email to libertyequalityutility(a)unifr.ch before April 27th 2026.
