ECTS offer: conference organization course

Dear VDP Members, Our Directorate of Studies has agreed to recognize 4 ECTS for the following course of the SPL 60 - Doctoral Studies Theol. Stud.u.R: 602001 SE Organisation einer wissenschaftlichen Fachtagung (2025S) The course is aimed at doctoral students who are interested in acquiring skills in conference organization. I hope this is of interest to you. Please note that the dates of the conference unfortunately coincide with those of our retreat. Best regards, Raphael --------------------------------------- (English version below) Die jährlichen Konferenzen der _European Academy of Religion_ bringen Forscher*innen der verschiedensten Disiplinen (Religionswissenschaft, Philosophie, Theologien, Literaturwissenschaften, Sozialwissenschaften,..) zusammen. Mit über 1000 Teilnehmer*innen gehören sie zu den weltweit größten Veranstaltungen zu religionsbezogener Forschung. Die EuARE 2025 findet von 8. bis 12. Juli in Wien statt. Studierenden wird die Möglichkeit geboten, an der Organisation dieser Konferenz mitzuwirken. Das bringt: Erwerb von Kompetenzen im Bereich Konferenzorganisation ECTS-Punkte (siehe unten: anrechenbares Package) Befreiung von den Tagungsgebühren und somit gratis Teilnahme an der gesamten Konferenz Anrechenbares Package zur Begleitung der Konferenz EuARe 20225 (https://www.europeanacademyofreligion.org/euare2025) für Studierende im Doktoratsstudium Philosophie : * Teilnahme an den Blockterminen (insgesamt 21 Stunden) des Seminars "Organisation einer wissenschaftlichen Fachtagung (https://ufind.univie.ac.at/de/course.html?lv=602001&semester=2025S - bitte anmelden, dann ist die Kommunikation einfacher) * Hilfe bei Vorbereitung der Konferenz (Aufgaben im Umfang von nicht mehr als 5 Stunden) * Teilnahme und Mithilfe an 2 Konferenztagen (oder 1 Tag + 2 halben Tagen, oder Äquivalent) (mit besonderer Zuteilung zu Sektionen mit philosophischen Inhalten) (etwa 21 Stunden) * Verfassen von Reflexionen zu ausgewählten Panel-Vorträgen (4-6 Seiten) Für dieses Package erhalten Studierende im Doktoratsstudium Philosophie (SPL 43) 4 ECTS (die DSPL Philosophie hat zugesagt, diese ECTS auf Antrag anzurechnen). ------------------------------------ The annual conferences of the European Academy of Religion bring together researchers from a wide range of disciplines (religious studies, philosophy, theologies, literary studies, social sciences, etc.). With over 1000 participants, they are among the world's largest events on religion-related research. EuARE 2025 will take place from July 8 to 12 in Vienna. Students are offered the opportunity to participate in the organization of this conference. The benefits: - Acquisition of skills in the field of conference organization - ECTS points (see below: creditable package) - Exemption from conference fees and thus free participation in the entire conference Creditable package to accompany the EuARe 20225 conference (https://www.europeanacademyofreligion.org/euare2025) for students in the doctoral program in Philosophy (SPL 43) : * Participation in the sessions of the seminar “Organization of a scientific conference” (https://ufind.univie.ac.at/de/course.html?lv=602001&semester=2025S - please register, then communication is easier) (21 hours in total) * Help with the preparation of the conference (tasks of no more than 5 hours) * Participation and assistance on 2 conference days (or 1 day + 2 half days, or equivalent) (with special allocation to sections with philosophical content) (about 21 hours) * Writing reflections on selected panel presentations (4-6 pages) Students in the doctoral program in Philosophy (SPL 43) receive 4 ECTS for this package (the DSPL Philosophy agreed to recognize these ECTS if a student applies for it). --------------------------------------- MSc. Hot desks for VDP students without contracts

Dear VDP Members, Our Director Benjamin Schnieder, our Student Representative Lisa Tragbar, and I have been working over the past few months to address one of the most critical issues facing our doctoral school, namely the provision of office space for students without contracts at the University of Vienna. The purpose of this message is to inform you of the results of our work and negotiations with the department's stakeholders. We will start A pilot project this summer semester (see attachment), opening two hot desks. We expect to expand the number of hot desks to seven, depending on the results of the pilot. Since this is a pilot project, we need to ask you to sign up for it. In the enclosed documents you will find an explanation of how to do it. I must also ask you to strictly follow the rules. This is extremely important because the results of the pilot will ultimately depend on how you, as a community of students, are able to work together. I am confident that the results will be optimal. I would also like to thank Chiara Dankl, Flora Löffelmann, and Jackson Sawatzky, who have generously agreed to share their office for this inititative. I wish you a nice weekend, Raphael

Speitel (IVC Fellow) Mathematical Determinacy Philosophy of Science Colloquium The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows. Date: 06/03/2025 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3A Abstract: The existence of non-standard models of important mathematical theories, such as first-order Peano-Arithmetic, threatens to undermine the claim of the moderate mathematical realist that non-mysterious access to mathematical structures is possible on the basis of our best mathematical theories. The move to frameworks stronger than FOL to articulate ‘better’ versions of these theories is denied to the moderate realist on the grounds that it merely shifts the indeterminacy ‘one level up’ into the meta-theory by — illegitimately, — assuming determinacy of the notions needed to formulate such logics. In this talk I want to outline the beginnings of a response to the determinacy challenge facing the moderate mathematical realist. I argue that the unique determinability of notions that enable categorical characterizations of important mathematical structures provides grounds for claiming naturalistically acceptable access to these structures, sufficient to resolve the determinacy challenge. I will illustrate the idea by showing how the mathematical realist may achieve arithmetical determinacy, and discuss ways to extend this approach to richer mathematical theories.

Dear all, I am delighted to invite you all to the fourth installment of the Trans*formations talk series at the Department of Philosophy, University of Vienna. The talk series provides insights into recent developments in trans* philosophizing. The next talk, "On the Cass Review: A Philosophy of Science Perspective" will be given by Emelia Stanley, University of Vienna, on March 11, 2025, at 16:30 in HS 2 (NIG). Abstract: The Cass Review was a report commissioned by NHS England in 2020 to recommend new practice guidelines in transgender healthcare for children and adolescents, as well as to document problems with the existing gender identity services. Following its release last year, it was cited by both major political parties to justify the wholesale closure of the services, a halt and then ban on the prescription of puberty blockers to under 18s, and the suspension of a pending law to outlaw conversion-therapy. A valuable case study as a piece of scientific research and communication, this presentation examines the scientific Cass Review from a philosophy of science perspective, evaluating its conclusions and methodology with respect to notions of evidential norms, standpoint epistemology, prejudicial attitudes, and the current paradigm for trans* healthcare. Bio: Emelia Stanley is a Philosophy PhD candidate at the University of Vienna. She is pursuing a thesis in the philosophy of logic and mathematics, but writes independently about trans* issues in the UK and abroad from a personal and philosophical perspective. Im „literary turn" der analytischen Moralphilosophie wird das Verhältnis von Ethik und Literatur ebenfalls neu entdeckt (vgl. Hämäläinen 2016: 17-24). Positionen, die Literatur als eigenständiges Medium ethischer Überlegungen verteidigen - u.a. Peter Winch, Cora Diamond, Iris Murdoch und Martha Nussbaum - vertreten dabei häufig ein weites Verständnis von Moralphilosophie. Diese soll nicht nur klare Prinzipien guten Handelns bestimmen, sondern sich umfassender mit Moral auseinandersetzen, etwa in Fragen zum guten Leben, zu Emotionen, Wahrnehmung oder Tugenden. Literatur gilt dabei als Ort dieser Auseinandersetzung - und zwar möglichst die Lektüre ganzer Werke, nicht die Verwendung einzelner literarischer Elemente (Vgl. Brudney 1990: 418; Hämäläinen 2016: 18f). Denn die ästhetische Integrität literarischer Texte sei entscheidend für die moralphilosophische Relevanz von Literatur. Literatur wandert aber oft auch in kleineren Ausschnitten und Formen in philosophische Argumentationen - in Form von Beispielen oder anderen narrativen Formen und in weitreichenden, aber unauffälligen Metaphern. Das Panel möchte Verwendungsweisen literarischer Texte in der praktischen Philosophie nachgehen, mit Beiträgen z.B. zu folgenden Fragen: * Wie verhält sich Literatur zu praktischer Philosophie? Welchen Wert hält sie für ethische Überlegungen bereit? * Welche Metaphern und Metapherntypen gibt es in der praktischen Philosophie? Wie funktionieren sie? Wofür sollte man Metaphern verwenden und was ist dabei zu beachten? * Welche Rolle spielen literarische Beispiele in Argumentationen der praktischen Philosophie? Was leisten sie im Unterschied zu anderen Beispielen? * Welche Rolle spielen narrative Elemente in der praktischen Philosophie? Um welche Erzählungen handelt es sich? Invitation to present at WFAP internal workshop

Dear all, on Saturday, March 15th, the Vienna Forum for Analytic Philosophy is organizing its Internal Workshop. The Internal Workshop provides you with a space to present your work; no matter whether it is a finished theory that you just feel like presenting, or an early draft you need some feedback on. The topic of your work could be anything, so long as it is broadly philosophy adjacent. This is your opportunity to practice, develop and share your ideas. Additionally, there will be ample time throughout the day to socialize, continue discussing, and enjoy a coffee/snack break. If you are interested in presenting something, please email veronika.lassl(a)univie.ac.at until March 8th at the latest. If possible, include a title for your talk (and ideally a 100-200 word abstract). The format is very relaxed and informal, so no worries if anything about the content of your proposal changes. We usually allot 45-minute slots per person, with about 25-30 minutes for your talk and 20-15 minutes for the Q&A. If you want a shorter session (e.g. if you only want to give a 15-minute talk), please tell us in your email. Also, if you have any preferences about when during the day your talk will take place (in the morning/afternoon...), please include that as well. Liebe Studierende der Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy, wir freuen uns, euch mitzuteilen, dass die transdisziplinäre Tagung spraWIEN am 7. Juni 2025 an der Universität Wien stattfinden wird. Nach dem Erfolg des letzten Jahres geht die Tagung damit in die zweite Runde. Die Tagung wird von engagierten Studierenden gemeinsam mit dem Verein Emerging Linguists organisiert und bietet Studierenden, Absolvent:innen und Forscher:innen aus den unterschiedlichsten Disziplinen die Möglichkeit, ihre Arbeiten in einem angenehmen Setting zu präsentieren, sich mit anderen zu vernetzen und Tagungserfahrungen zu sammeln. Ob in den Sozial-, Naturwissenschaften oder Philosophie – Sprache spielt in vielen Forschungsfeldern eine wichtige Rolle.
