Call for Papers (Düsseldorf, Deadline: 16.05.2025)
Workshop: Similarity after Carnap - Perspectives from Philosophy and
Cognitive Science
We are pleased to invite six contributed talks for a GAP Satellite
Workshop "Similarity after Carnap - Perspectives from Philosophy and
Cognitive Science", taking place right after the GAP.12 on 12th and 13th
September at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf. The event aims to
bring together researchers from philosophy and psychology to discuss the
development of the concept of similarity following Carnap's "Aufbau",
the subsequent famous criticism by Nelson Goodman and its influence on
psychological theories. We welcome contributions to topics such as:
* Carnap's conceptions of similarity (e.g, recollection of similarity,
quality spaces, analogical inference)
* The prospects and problems of quasi-analysis and related tools of
similarity-based category formation in psychology and philosophy
* Goodman's criticism against similarity and its influence on
similarity concepts within cognitive science
* Tensions between different conceptions of similarity in philosophy
and psychology (e.g., spatial accounts versus feature-matching)
* Advantages and limitations of explaining cognitive development in
terms of similarity
This is our current list of confirmed speakers
* Javier Belastegui Lazcano (Logic, Cognition, Language and
Information, University of the Basque)
* Karin Enflo (Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, Umeå
University)

Veranstaltungsankündigung (Karlsruhe), 23.05.2025 - 24.05.2025
Workshop: The Idea of Moral Progress in the Utilitarian Tradition
Workshop
*The Idea of Moral Progress in the Utilitarian Tradition*
23-24 May 2025
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe/Germany
From its earliest days onwards, the (secular) utilitarian tradition has
always seen itself as on the side of moral progress, against
conservative and "sinister" interests. Even opponents of the doctrine
often concende that, in retrospect, utilitarians were often right to
oppose discriminatory laws and customs. The idea of progress has also
been used by utilitarians as an argumentative resource against competing
normative theories. This workshop aims to combine systematic and
historical perspectives and to explore questions such as:
- How have utilitarians thought about the idea of moral improvement?
- How and why do they differ?
- How might their views have changed over time?
- What role does this idea play in their philosophical outlook?
Speakers:
- Eleonora Buono (Lausanne/Switzerland)
- Giulia Cantamessi (Pavia/Italy)
- Roger Crisp (Oxford/United Kingdom)
- Julia Driver (Austin/USA)
- Annette Dufner (Bielefeld/Germany)
- Frauke Höntzsch (Augsburg/Germany)
- Helen McCabe (Nottingham/United Kingdom)
- Michael Schefczyk (Karlsruhe/Germany)
- Cyriak Schmitz (Karlsruhe/Germany)
- Christian Seidel (Karlsruhe/Germany)
This event will be a modified pre-read workshop: We will distribute
extended handouts (rather than full papers) to participants about a week
in advance. Registration by email (office.seidel(a)itz.kit.edu) by 14 May
2025 is required. Please also let us know if you plan to attend the
conference dinner (on 23 May 2025).

Veranstaltungsankündigung (Regensburg), 28.05.2025 - 30.05.2025
Konferenz: Tocquevilles Demokratietheorie und die Krise der Demokratie
_Democracy in Crisis: Tocqueville's Theory of Democracy and Its
Relevance in the Age of (Global) De-Democratization_
Liberal democracy is in crisis worldwide. Not only in comparatively
young democracies but also in time-honored ones such as the US, the
foundations of liberal, constitutional democracy are crumbling.
As early as the 19th century, Tocqueville presented a groundbreaking
theory of democracy, examining both its bright and dark sides as a form
of society and government in America and Europe. While current political
theory - especially radical democratic theory - focuses on criticism of
liberal democracy and its swan song, we aim to revive Tocqueville's
theory of democracy and use it in four systematic panels to ask whether
liberal democracy can be saved rather than abandoned.
Our goal is to build a bridge between an analysis of the current
phenomena of the democratic crisis and the reconstruction of the central
elements of Tocqueville's theory.
To attend the international conference please send an email to
ricarda.wuensch(a)ur.de before the 15th of May 2025.

Ulrike Heuer (University College London)

Dates and Location:
The conference will be held at Bielefeld University in Bielefeld,
Germany, from June 11th to June 13th as an in-person event, with no
online participation available. It will begin on the evening of June 11
with a keynote talk by Jonathan Dancy. All other talks will be held on
June 12th and 13th.
Summary:
The aim of this conference is to explore the interrelations between
different normative properties and different hypotheses about what
ultimately unifies them, with a particular focus on whether these
properties can be understood in terms of reasons. The talks and
discussions will examine the connections between reasons, value,
obligation, justification, ought, fittingness, and other key normative
notions central to different philosophical subfields, including ethics,
epistemology, and the philosophy of emotions. These discussions will
have implications for the reasons first program and aspire to improve
our understanding of the nature of the normative.
The conference is organized by Benjamin Kiesewetter and Shane Ward
(Department of Philosophy, Bielefeld University) as part of the
ERC-funded project _REASONS F1RST - The Structure of Normativity_. For

Formalisations in Philosophy (SSFP)
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the upcoming international conference at LMU
Munich:
The Syntax and Semantics of Formalisations in Philosophy (SSFP)
This interdisciplinary conference aims to investigate how formalisation
techniques influence both the syntactic and semantic representation of
philosophical concepts, and how such techniques can be used to address
core philosophical questions. The event will bring together researchers
working on the intersection of philosophy, logic, formal semantics, and
related areas.
Our program will feature four keynote lectures:
- Anna Brożek (University of Warsaw)
- Georg Brun (University of Bern)
- Sven Ove Hansson (Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm)
- Catarina Dutilh Novaes (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam)
There will also be eight talks by contributed speakers:
- Carolin Antos (University of Konstanz)
- Ludovica Conti (University of Vienna)
- Michael Hladky (University of Geneva)
- Patricia Marino (University of Waterloo)
- Perceval Pillon (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne)
- Lassi Saario (University of Helsinki)
- Nevo Spiegel (Tel Aviv University)
- Bobby Vos (University of Toronto)
Besides these talks, there will also be a poster session where graduate
students of LMU are given the opportunity to present their relevant
work.
We warmly invite all scholars working in relevant fields to attend, as
well as anyone interested in formal philosophy. Since space is limited,
we recommend that you register early using this registration form:
