Stellenausschreibung (Universität Bern, Deadline: 10.04.2026)
Professor:in (m/w/d) 100
The Institute of Philosophy at the University of Bern (Switzerland)
intends to appoint a Professor of the History of Philosophy (Full-time)
(Successor to Prof. Dr. Richard King) with effect from 1 August 2027, or
as soon as possible thereafter.
The core responsibilities of the professorship include wide-ranging
teaching and internationally visible research in the field of the
history of philosophy. One research focus must fall within the period,
roughly, from Hobbes to Hegel (inclusive). The successful candidate
should conduct outstanding research that is relevant to systematic
questions and arguments in contemporary philosophy and relates to
central themes in theoretical or practical philosophy. A willingness to
reflect critically on the methods and canon of the history of philosophy
is desirable. A depth of experience in academic teaching is essential,
as is the ability and willingness to cover a wide area within the
history of philosophy in a way that is appealing to students. Teaching
and supervision will be conducted in German and English. If the
successful candidate is not already able to teach and supervise in
German, the necessary language skills should be acquired within two
years.
The Institute of Philosophy emphasizes close collaboration across
professorships and research areas. Accordingly, candidates should
demonstrate a cooperative approach and interest in intra- and
interdisciplinary collaboration. Experience in securing external funding
and in managing research projects is also desirable. The successful
candidate will be expected to contribute to the academic administration
of the Institute.
Depending on qualifications, the successful candidate will be appointed
at the level of assistant professorship with tenure track, associate
professorship, or full professorship. To be considered for a full or
associate professorship, candidates must have a habilitation or else
demonstrate equivalent achievement. The requirements for appointment to
an assistant professorship with tenure track are an above-average
doctoral thesis and an advanced habilitation project or equivalent
achievement. Appointment to an assistant professorship with tenure track
is initially for four years and can be extended for a further two years.
Subject to a successful evaluation, the position may then be converted
into an associate professorship and made permanent.
The University of Bern is committed to equal opportunities and the
promotion of diversity in employment. In particular, it strives to
increase the number of women in senior academic positions and welcomes
applications from people with disabilities, People of Color, and people
who, in the Swiss context, are from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Call for Papers (Universität Wien, Deadline: 28.02.2026)
Konferenz (studentische Veranstaltung): The Armchair on Trial - A
Graduate Conference on Philosophical Methods
REMINDER: Deadline approaching for "The Armchair on Trial" conference
------------------
THE ARMCHAIR ON TRIAL
The Vienna Forum for Analytic Philosophy (WFAP) welcomes submissions of
abstracts for its 15th annual graduate conference: _The Armchair on
Trial - A Graduate Conference on Philosophical Methodology_
CONFERENCE VENUE: Department of Philosophy, University of Vienna,
Austria
DATES: July 9-11, 2026
ABSTRACT DEADLINE: February 28, 2026
NOTIFICATION OF SUCCESS: March 15, 2026
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:
Hilary Kornblith (University of Massachussets Amherst)
Jennifer Nagel (University of Toronto)
Christian Nimtz (University of Bielefeld)
TOPIC:
This year's annual WFAP graduate conference [4] is devoted to debates
around philosophical methodology. It is centered around the question of
whether philosophy is best done from the philosophical armchair or
whether it can and should be done using empirical methods. The
conference is focused on the extent to which the emergence of
naturalistic approaches and of experimental philosophy ("X-Phi") pose a
problem to 'traditional' armchair methods (e.g. consulting intuitions,
conceptual analysis, reflective equilibrium, conceptual engineering). We
are interested both in work that focuses on individual methods or on the
relations between them (e.g. their compatibility).
We aim to bring together early career and advanced researchers in order
to discuss questions such as:
* What is the role of intuition in philosophy?
* What is the role of _a priori_ knowledge in philosophy?
* What is the role of X-Phi in philosophy?
* What is the role of conceptual analysis in philosophy?
* What is the role of conceptual engineering in philosophy?
* What is the role of linguistic and conceptual competence in
philosophy?
* What is the role of formal methods in philosophy?
* Is philosophy importantly distinct from other sciences?
* How can advocates of armchair methods best respond to the challenges
raised by X-Phi?
* Are armchair philosophy and X-Phi reconcilable?
* Considering the methodological discussions listed above, are
professional philosophers epistemically better positioned for answering
philosophical questions than lay people? E.g. Do they have better
conceptual competence? Are they expert intuiters?
We welcome submissions that apply these methodological issues to other
philosophical debates as case studies. If you wish to align your talk
with the WFAP's reading circle in preparation for the conference, feel
free to check out our readings here [5]. You can take a look at our past
graduate conferences here [6] .
We look forward to your submissions!

Call for Papers (Online, Deadline: 31.03.2026)
Workshop: ZEMO-Online Workshop on New Perspectives in the Philosophy of
Empathy
Call for Abstracts: ZEMO-Online Workshop on _New Perspectives in the
Philosophy of Empathy_
Philosophical debates on empathy have developed in numerous directions.
There is a multitude of voices, some focussing on historical accounts,
others connecting closely to the most recent psychological research;
some scholars work in a phenomenological tradition, others use methods
of analytic philosophy. Topics also vary widely, from epistemic problems
in accessing the mental life of others to the significance of empathy
for moral agency; from embodiment and interactionism about empathy to
evolutionary perspectives or the psychopathology of empathy. There are
also closely related phenomena, such as imagination, sympathy, care,
fellow-feeling, or interpersonal understanding, which relate in numerous
possible ways to empathy research.
We invite abstracts (up to 500 words) for papers to be presented at a
ZEMO online workshop on _New Perspectives in the Philosophy of Empathy_
in autumn 2026 (exact date tbd together with all participants). The
workshop has an inclusive approach, inviting contributions from all
relevant areas and philosophical traditions. The main purpose is to
create a forum for new voices - emerging scholars - and to enable
cross-fertilisation between different contexts of debate.
The workshop is organised by Thomas Schramme [8] (Liverpool) in close
collaboration with Michael Kühler [9] (Dortmund), co-editor of the
_Journal for Ethics and Moral Philosophy [10] _(Zeitschrift für Ethik
und Moralphilosophie, ZEMO), an academic journal that publishes articles
in German and English. The workshop is intended to serve as a starting
point for a corresponding topical collection published in ZEMO.
The submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the organisers, and the
authors of the selected abstracts will be invited to submit a draft
paper. All draft papers will be pre-circulated to participants and will
therefore need to be ready a few weeks before the event (exact date
tbd). All draft papers will then be discussed in depth at the online
workshop. The aim is to provide constructive feedback and suggestions
for revising the papers. The revised papers will then be subjected to
the journal's regular peer review process and, if accepted, published as
part of the topical collection.
The deadline for submission of abstracts (up to 500 words) is 31 March
2026
Please send your abstract to the following email addresses:
T.Schramme(a)liverpool.ac.uk and michael.kuehler(a)fh-dortmund.de.

University of Vienna [15], Austria
Over the course of five days participants will have the opportunity to
engage with renowned experts in discussions on the topic of trust and
cooperation on the interpersonal and institutional level, as well as
within the contexts of climate change and immigration. Trust and
cooperation have become front and center issues in today's world. The
nature of global challenges - from refugees seeking asylum to the
ecological crises of climate change and biodiversity loss - renders
cooperation ever more crucial to overcoming them. Key questions revolve
around the nature of trust and the nature of cooperation respectively,
as well as around the relationship between trust and cooperation,
intersecting the fields of social and political philosophy, as well as
applied ethics and political epistemology.
Participants will explore current research in these fields, attend
keynote lectures, thematic discussions and interactive workshops, as
well as present their own work, and receive valuable feedback from
invited scholars.
We welcome applications from PhD students (prioritized), advanced MA
students and postdoctoral researchers in philosophy and related
disciplines. Two modes of participation are possible: 1) attendance, 2)
presentation - if they would also like to give a presentation.
To apply for participation, please send the following documents to
Joachim Raich (joachim.raich(a)univie.ac.at):
* Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages)
* Statement of Purpose (no longer than 1 page), explaining the
relevance of the summer school to your study, research, teaching and/or
other professional work.
* Statement of Financial Aid (optional). We can offer limited partial
financial support to the participants whose home institutions cannot
cover their expenses. We therefore ask the applicants who wish to be
considered for funding to briefly describe their situation in the
statement.
* Abstract (optional; max. 250 words). If you would like to present
your work at the summer school, please send us a short abstract of your
presentation. The presentations should be related in a significant
manner to the themes of trust and/or cooperation (from any philosophical
perspective) and should be about 20 minutes long to leave enough time
for discussions. Since the number of slots for student presentations is
limited, this will help us decide on how to allocate them.
The maximum number of participants at the summer school will be 25. Full
attendance is worth 4 ECTS.
The summer school fee is 75 Euros. The fee includes the student union
fee of 25 Euros, which is required by Austrian law to register at the
University of Vienna and to receive a certificate of completion of the
summer school.
Submit your application by March 31, 23.59 CET.
joachim.raich(a)univie.ac.at
We will notify you of the decision by April 16.
Diversity Statement
We strongly encourage applications from members of disadvantaged and
underrepresented groups.

Sonstige: Ethik-Forum „Selbst schuld?" Zum Verursacherprinzip in der
Medizin
Mit Beiträgen von Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, Wolfram Henn, Stefan Huster,
Sabine Salloch und Amelie Wuppermann
Wer trägt die Lasten, wenn individuelle Lebensstilentscheidungen
Gesundheitskosten erzeugen?

The Epistemology of Medicine
25-26 June 2026
Carl Friedrich von Siemens Foundation
Südliches Schlossrondell 23, 80638 Munich, Germany
Rationale:
This international conference brings together leading philosophers to
explore foundational questions in the epistemology of medicine. How do
we generate, evaluate, and integrate knowledge in medical science and
practice--especially in an era shaped by big data, advanced statistics,
and artificial intelligence? By examining the nature of evidence, causal
reasoning, and explanatory models in health and healthcare, the event
aims to clarify how different sources of knowledge can be combined to
guide effective medical decision-making and policy. Through
interdisciplinary dialogue, The Epistemology of Medicine seeks to
advance philosophical understanding while contributing to the broader
goals of improving patient care and promoting societal well-being.
