Opportunities with SHiFT Cost: Grants Now Open
Two Virtual Mobility (VM) Grants and one Short-Term Scientific Mission
Summary Report (STSM) Grant are currently open through SHiFT COST - a
transdisciplinary initiative addressing societal transformations in the
face of climate change.
These grants offer valuable opportunities to contribute to meaningful
research and innovation while advancing your skills and expertise.
Interested individuals are encouraged to apply and engage with the SHiFT
community. Austria is a full member of COST Action SHiFT and no prior
individual membership is required!
Virtual Mobility Grant – Social Sciences and Humanities Guidebook
The goal is the integration and exploitation of developed materials, to
strengthen dissemination, networking and policy engagement for action
legacy and to develop practice on learning for sustainability.
The application deadline is 23 January 2026. The mission period runs
from 3 February to 30 June 2026 and the grant offers financial support
of up to €1.500.
How to apply:

Virtual Mobility Grant – Vernacular history and walking methodologies
This grant aims to develop a case-study example of the value of
vernacular history for biodiversity and conservation and showcase the
practical application of walking methodologies in complex biodiversity
contexts. The goal is to design, coordinate and organize an interactive
and guided walking session as a methodology to explore biodiversity and
intersections with vernacular history.
The application deadline is 2 February 2026. The mission period runs
from 12 February to 30 April 2026 and the grant offers financial support
of up to €1.500.

STSM Grant – Short Term Scientific Mission Summary Report
The aim of this STSM grant is to establish stronger connections between
the existing societal transformations literature and the SHiFT missions
by summarising and synthesizing the contributions that have been created
within the SHiFT STSMs. The candidate will work with the reports on the
completed STSMs to draw lessons on transformation and
transdisciplinarity in climate crisis from these missions, and
demonstrate how these contributions align with the central objectives of
the action.
The application deadline is 26 January 2026. The mission period runs
from 12 February to 30 April 2026 and the grant offers financial support
of up to €3.000.

à Tipping Points Discussion Series: Global Tipping Points Report - A
look at risks and opportunities | 26.1., 15.00-16.30
Compiled by 160 scientists from 23 countries and 87 institutions, the
Global Tipping Points Report 2025 synthesizes the latest research on
critical Earth system thresholds. It assesses how close key natural
systems, like ocean currents, glaciers and rainforests, are to
irreversible change and the risks of overshooting temperature
boundaries. One key finding from this year's report was how warm-water
coral reefs are already reaching a dangerous tipping point and heading
toward long-term decline.
The report also highlights governance challenges and opportunities to
trigger transformative positive tipping points. This webinar will focus
on the report and feature leading researchers and authors from it to
unpack its insights on topics like coral reefs, governance strategies,
and positive tipping points that can make a difference. Join AIMES, the
Earth Commission, Future Earth, and the WCRP’s Safe Landing Climates
Lighthouse Activity for a discussion on tipping points and on how
science can guide urgent action toward a safe and sustainable future.
