The event will feature Kate Vredenburgh from the London School of Economics, who works in the philosophy of social science, political philosophy, and the philosophy of technology, and who was recently awarded a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship for a project on the future of work. The first day of the conference is reserved for presentations from speakers selected via a call for papers. Kate Vredenburgh will be present to respond to the papers. On the same day, she will also give a public keynote lecture. On the second day, we will hold a student workshop on Vredenburgh's work. _Conference Themes_ The conference will engage with themes from Vredenburgh's work, in particular philosophical perspectives on artificial intelligence (AI) and on the future of work. Concerning AI, Vredenburgh investigates the moral implications of the use of opaque AI systems in the institutions of our society, arguing for a right to explanation. She has developed an ethically informed picture of algorithmic bias, and proposed an account of how we should respond to such bias from the perspective of justice and fairness. She is also an advocate of a right to explanation in the context of AI, based on explanation's relevance in protecting the possibility of informed self-advocacy. Regarding the future of work, Vredenburgh's research focuses on the impact of AI on the workplace. She draws on egalitarian theories of justice and argues that AI should be deployed so as to enable more equality at work, and she maintains that opaque AI contributes to working conditions which undermine workers' autonomy while alienating them from their work. It welcomes scholars working on the manifold philosophical, societal, economic, geopolitical, or historical dimensions of this challenging topic. As a name-giver for this program, Patočka’s critical investigations into the history of philosophy, the meaning of modernity, (post)colonialism, war, technology, and the dialectics of enlightenment offer exemplary––though by no means exclusive––fields of research. The call invites project applications that offer inspiring perspectives on the idea of (post-)Europe and its critical reflection in contemporary debates. Call for Organizers: VDP Summer School 2026 Deadline for applications: November 5th

Dear All, The Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy is seeking proposals for the sixth edition of its summer school, to take place in 2026. We're currently accepting proposals for organizing and leading our next year's Summer School. Deadline: 5th November 2025 23:59 (CET) Funding: The VDP will cover organizational costs for the conferences, as well as travel expenses for international and local instructors. How to apply? Interested parties should submit a proposal for the upcoming Summer School, which should not exceed 2-3 pages. The proposal should include: 1. Suggested title(s) 2. A description of the summer school 3. Target audience(s) (e.g., late master's students, PhD students, postdocs) 4. Dates 5. Organizing team, including VDP members, postdocs and faculty (ideally up to 4 to 5 members) 6. List of possible instructors 7. Shared Office - Winter Semester Registration

Dear VDP Members, I am writing to ask if you would like to register for hot office space at the NiG for the next semester. Please only register if you plan to use the office (A0327B NiG) regularly, i.e., at least twice per week during the semester. One problem during the pilot program was registration without regular attendance. We would like to avoid this issue in the upcoming semester, as number of registrations are limited. Thus, please think about whether you can make such a commitment before registering. If you registered for the pilot program last semester, you must register again for the upcoming semester. The climate crisis necessitates a green transformation from a fossil-fuel-based economy to renewable energy production and transportation, yet political and institutional hurdles to achieving a just transition abound. Recent advances in artificial intelligence suggest the possibility that much work currently done by humans will be thoroughly transformed or replaced. Societal transformations raise various philosophical questions, yet discourse on societal transformations that is distinctly philosophical is not always visible in the academic literature, and in some respects underdeveloped. The aim of this special issue is to bring together contributions on the topics of societal transformations and transitional justice, to identify core ethical and political principles and frameworks, as well as conceptual distinctions and clarifications, that can advance scholarship in this field. For instance, large-scale transformations will often create losers and winners - what assistance do we owe to those who, through no fault of their own, find their long-term projects and life plans frustrated? Arguably, some transformations challenge fundamental institutions and basic moral concepts. Do we owe duties to artificial intelligences, and if so, do these duties differ in kind from the ones that we owe to each other? In recent years there has been populist backlash against certain decarbonization policies. Are there any lessons we can learn from this about the desirability, and feasibility, of societal transformations? Other relevant questions include, but are not limited to, the following: * How can functional institutions and long-term governance be procured in transitional processes? * How can epistemic injustices be avoided in societal transformations? * Can insights from social ontology and empirical findings be utilized for a better understanding of societal transformations, including core levers and agents of change? * Do philosophers require specific methods, e.g., "engaged philosophy", to reflect on societal transformations? * What role should risk and uncertainty play in normative theorizing on societal transformations? Original research papers between 3.000 and 10.000 words in length should be submitted by January 31st, 2026. All submissions will undergo MOPP's double-blind refereeing process. Papers will only be accepted for publication in the Special Issue if they are approved for publication by both the journal's editors and the guest editors. Dieser Frage widmet sich der ganztägige Workshop im Rahmen des GAP.12- Kongresses in Düsseldorf. Vorgestellt werden innovative Formate und Materialien zur Sichtbarmachung von Frauen in der Philosophie - von eigens im Rahmen des BMFTRVerbundprojekts erstellten Handreichungen, die Impulse für Forschung und Lehre geben, über einen Reader mit erstmals ins Deutsche übersetzten Originaltexten frühneuzeitlicher Philosophinnen bis hin zu einer internationalen Sonderausgabe des British Journal for the History of Philosophy zum Thema „How To Teach Historical Women Philosophers". Zwei Keynote-Vorträge von Lisa Shapiro (McGill University) und Frederique Janssen-Lauret (University of Manchester) entwickeln darüber hinaus konkrete Perspektiven für eine Erweiterung der Philosophiegeschichte. Zum Abschluss lädt eine moderierte Plenumsdiskussion zur gemeinsamen Reflexion über Potenziale und Herausforderungen der Integration historischer Philosophinnen in die akademische Lehre ein. ***Important*** Funding Request and Reimbursement Guidelines

Dear VDP Members, I trust you are enjoying a pleasant summer. I am writing to inform you that we have prepared a new Funding Request and Reimbursement Guidelines for expenses related to the VDP, including conference participation, external research stays, event organization, summer schools, and similar activities. As part of this update, we have removed several documents, such as the Info sheet on reimbursement claims, the information on speaker fees in the budget document, and the document detailing lunch and dinner rules. However, the Budget document has been retained as it provides information that is updated on an annual basis. The new guidelines provide detailed information on eligibility, the types of expenses that can be reimbursed, how to submit a reimbursement claim, and important deadlines. To ensure responsible use of funds, several new rules have been introduced, which are outlined within the document. We kindly request that you review the document in its entirety. It is now mandatory for VDP to familiarize themselves with the guidelines prior to submitting any funding request and reimbursement claim, and all applications must adhere to the procedures outlined within.
