Call for Papers: Workshop „Denkfiguren von Individuum und Masse“ (6.–7. Februar 2026, Universität Wien)

Liebe Kolleg*innen, wir möchten Sie herzlich auf den Workshop „Denkfiguren von Individuum und Masse“ aufmerksam machen und laden zur Einreichung von Beiträgen ein. Call for Papers/Call for Speakers Konferenz: „Denkfiguren von Individuum und Masse“ 6.–7. Februar 2026, Universität Wien Von Revolutionär*innen geliebt, von Liberalen gefürchtet, von Kulturkritiker*innen bemitleidet – die Masse bleibt eine Provokation. Sie gilt als politische Kraft, die ebenso gefürchtet wie als Hoffnungsträgerin beschworen wird. Demgegenüber steht das Ideal des autonomen Subjekts, das philosophische, politische und kulturelle Debatten bis heute prägt. Zunehmend rückt dabei die Frage in den Fokus, unter welchen Bedingungen Selbstbestimmung möglich ist – und welche Grenzen ihr gesetzt sind. Daraus ergeben sich weiterführende Überlegungen: – Wie lässt sich die Beziehung zwischen Individuum und Masse philosophisch denken – als Antagonismus, Wechselwirkung oder dialektische Einheit? – Wie wird das Verhältnis des Einzelnen zu kollektiven Ordnungen – etwa Nation, Klasse, Religion oder Geschlecht – im philosophischen Denken konzipiert, gerechtfertigt oder kritisiert? – Und schließlich: Was unterscheidet neue (digitale) Massen von klassischen (physischen)? Die interdisziplinäre Konferenz widmet sich diesen Fragen aus historischen und systematischen Perspektiven. Zur Diskussion stehen Modelle sozialen Zusammenhangs, ethische Konzepte des Einzelnen und ideologiekritische Reflexionen über das „Wir“ – unter anderem ausgehend von (dem kleinen) Otto Bauer, Albert Camus, Judith Shklar und Simone Weil. Eingeladen sind Beiträge aus der (Rechts-)Philosophie, den Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften, der Geschichtswissenschaft sowie angrenzenden Disziplinen. Willkommen sind sowohl theoretische als auch historische oder exemplarische Zugänge. Die Konferenz findet auf Deutsch statt, englischsprachige Beiträge sind ebenfalls willkommen. Bitte senden Sie ein Abstract (max. 250 Wörter) sowie eine kurze biografische Skizze (max. 150 Wörter) – etwa zu Ihrem akademischen Hintergrund und Ihren Forschungsinteressen – bis zum 26. Job: Two 3-yr PhD Positions FWF-Project “The Ethics of Blaming and Praising Group Agents” University of Vienna The FWF Project ‘The Ethics of Blaming and Praising Group Agents’ seeks to appoint two doctoral researchers to conduct their PhD in Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Vienna. The Principal Investigator of the project is Dr. Niels de Haan. The project has six internationally renowned collaborators: Prof. Hans Bernhard Schmid (University of Vienna), Prof. Paulina Sliwa (University of Vienna), Assoc. Prof. Stephanie Collins (Monash University), Prof. Gunnar Björnsson (Stockholm University), Prof. Frank Hindriks (University of Groningen), and Prof. Kasper Lippert-Rasmussen (Aarhus University). The project focuses on questions related to the moral responsibility of group agents, and lies at the intersection of social ontology, collective ethics, moral responsibility and the ethics of blame and praise. The aim of the project is first to develop a novel methodology for including moral group phenomena more prominently in the development of theories of moral agency, moral responsibility, blame and praise. And in a second step, based on this novel methodology, the project investigates how cases involving groups matter for our understanding of the nature of blame and praise, of the conditions under which an agent is morally blameworthy or praiseworthy, and when blame- or praise-interactions are appropriate. The project will run for three years and employ two doctoral researchers who will conduct their PhD in Philosophy within the scope of the project. The project is expected to start at November 2025. The two positions are fully funded for three years according to FWF standards (approx. 2786,- euro bruto x 14 months per year). The deadline for applications is 29 August 2025.
