The Future of Climate Change Science", funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The starting date for employment is February 1st, 2026 or soon thereafter. Scientific context of the project: In current climate science, there is a strong push towards more detailed and powerful computational models to address the challenges posed by current climate change. However, are bigger models always better? Which epistemic purposes can be reached with higher resolution and new machine-learning methods, and which not? How can the scientific understanding of the climate system be deepened with computational models? How is it related to providing decision-relevant climate change information? Our research project takes current discussions in climate science about the future of the discipline as an opportunity to examine its epistemic foundations with a special focus on values. The climate crisis necessitates a green transformation from a fossil-fuel-based economy to renewable energy production and transportation, yet political and institutional hurdles to achieving a just transition abound. Recent advances in artificial intelligence suggest the possibility that much work currently done by humans will be thoroughly transformed or replaced. Societal transformations raise various philosophical questions, yet discourse on societal transformations that is distinctly philosophical is not always visible in the academic literature, and in some respects underdeveloped. The aim of this special issue is to bring together contributions on the topics of societal transformations and transitional justice, to identify core ethical and political principles and frameworks, as well as conceptual distinctions and clarifications, that can advance scholarship in this field. For instance, large-scale transformations will often create losers and winners - what assistance do we owe to those who, through no fault of their own, find their long-term projects and life plans frustrated? Arguably, some transformations challenge fundamental institutions and basic moral concepts. Do we owe duties to artificial intelligences, and if so, do these duties differ in kind from the ones that we owe to each other? In recent years there has been populist backlash against certain decarbonization policies. Are there any lessons we can learn from this about the desirability, and feasibility, of societal transformations? Other relevant questions include, but are not limited to, the following: * How can functional institutions and long-term governance be procured in transitional processes? * How can epistemic injustices be avoided in societal transformations? * Can insights from social ontology and empirical findings be utilized for a better understanding of societal transformations, including core levers and agents of change? * Do philosophers require specific methods, e.g., "engaged philosophy", to reflect on societal transformations? * What role should risk and uncertainty play in normative theorizing on societal transformations? Original research papers between 3.000 and 10.000 words in length should be submitted by January 31st, 2026. All submissions will undergo MOPP's double-blind refereeing process. Papers will only be accepted for publication in the Special Issue if they are approved for publication by both the journal's editors and the guest editors. ***Important*** Funding Request and Reimbursement Guidelines

Dear VDP Members, I trust you are enjoying a pleasant summer. I am writing to inform you that we have prepared a new Funding Request and Reimbursement Guidelines for expenses related to the VDP, including conference participation, external research stays, event organization, summer schools, and similar activities. As part of this update, we have removed several documents, such as the Info sheet on reimbursement claims, the information on speaker fees in the budget document, and the document detailing lunch and dinner rules. However, the Budget document has been retained as it provides information that is updated on an annual basis. The new guidelines provide detailed information on eligibility, the types of expenses that can be reimbursed, how to submit a reimbursement claim, and important deadlines. To ensure responsible use of funds, several new rules have been introduced, which are outlined within the document. We kindly request that you review the document in its entirety. It is now mandatory for VDP to familiarize themselves with the guidelines prior to submitting any funding request and reimbursement claim, and all applications must adhere to the procedures outlined within. Neben der Lehrtätigkeit wird ein Engagement in der Weiterentwicklung des Lehrangebotes und der Studienprogramme des Philosophischen Seminars erwartet. 30% der Arbeitszeit sind für eigenständige Forschung zur praktischen Philosophie oder zur Geschichte der Philosophie sowie im Falle erfolgreicher Drittmitteleinwerbung für die Führung eines Forschungsteams vorgesehen. Neben einer Promotion in Philosophie können Sie ausgezeichnete Publikationen zur praktischen Philosophie und zur Geschichte der Philosophie vorweisen und sind bereit, mit Ihrer Forschung zum seminarinternen Forschungsschwerpunkt «Normativity» beizutragen. As Étienne Balibar (1991) observes, this period has seen a shift from biological to cultural racism. In seeking greater acceptance within mainstream politics, the New Right has adopted a defensive posture: its rhetoric frames exclusionary politics as the protection of threatened groups rather than aggression towards others. A prominent example is the so‑called ‘Great Replacement’ conspiracy theory, which casts immigration and demographic change as an existential threat to certain populations. Another is ethnopluralism, a doctrine most famously associated with Alain de Benoist, but widely adopted across far‑right networks in Europe and North America. Ethnopluralism recasts biological races as ethnic groups imagined to possess fixed, essential qualities central to collective and individual well‑being. Despite abandoning the term ‘race’, it does not break with the process of racialisation: populations remain essentialised, geographically bounded, and often hierarchically ordered. Perceived threats such as migration, globalisation, and capitalism are presented as dangers to group integrity. Marketed as a defence of diversity and autonomy of ethnic groups – even as a rejection of racism, cultural superiority, and xenophobia – ethnopluralism in practice legitimises cultural separatism, civilisational chauvinism, and what Rueda (2021) calls a non‑biological yet adaptive form of alterophobia and autophilia. By casting exclusion as the preservation of difference, it functions as a strategic form of cultural racism, readily embraced by movements that once endorsed overtly racist views or political violence. Focusing on ethnopluralism and the ‘Great Replacement’ theory, this conference will explore how the New Right’s defensive racism operates. What processes of racialisation does it involve, and what conception of race emerges from them? *We invite abstracts from graduate students and early career researchers (within 2 years of their PhD) in philosophy and the social sciences. *Possible questions include, but are not limited to: ·⁠What implications for the social ontology or metaphysics of groups do the New Right’s threat‑based conceptions carry? Do these approaches offer the right theoretical tools for understanding what is distinctive about ideologies such as ethnopluralism? ·How does ethnopluralism compare with other forms of alterophobia or racism, given its claimed rejection of biological race? ·⁠In the European context, some groups have been classified as ‘white’, yet racialised nonetheless. Is there any qualitative difference between speaking of ethnicities rather than races? ·⁠‘Colour‑blind’ eliminativism – the rejection of race as a legitimate category in public and academic discourse – has been argued to be a distinctive feature of the European context (Bessone 2020; Ludwig 2020; James et al. 2024). Are there continuities between this and the New Right’s replacement of race with ethnicity? ·⁠How should we interpret the New Right’s critique of capitalism, given the close historical entanglement between racialisation and capitalist development? ·⁠US‑based scholars have explored the role of ‘threat’ in understanding race (e.g. Goldberg 2008; Medovoi 2024). Do their insights apply to the New Right, or does the latter’s ideology demand a different analytical framework? Participants will have up to 20 minutes to present their papers, followed by 10 minutes of discussion. Presentations will be in English. A small number of bursaries will be available to help cover travel costs (paid as an honorarium). Priority will be given to those without institutional support. This graduate conference forms part of a three‑day event on race, racialisation, and racism in the European context. We prefer the following three topics: "Philosophy of the self: self-consciousness, self-knowledge, self-deception", "Philosophy of AI or Social Robots" or "A comparative perspective on humans and nonhuman animals" We offer a fellowship for a postdoc at the Institute of Philosophy II at the Ruhr-University in Bochum in the area of philosophy of mind and cognition in the research group of Prof. Dr. Albert Newen. The fellowship will be offered for 24 months. As public awareness grows regarding the complex impacts of technological innovation, research into ethical, legal, social, and economic aspects/impacts/factors is becoming increasingly important to help anticipate and avoid undesirable consequences. Now firmly embedded in European funding requirements for research and innovation actions, this type of research must clearly define its objectives, practices, and intended audiences. This is exactly where we want to start with this workshop: to stimulate an interdisciplinary discussion about methodological and content-related aspects of ELSI/ELSA/ELSE, fostering collaboration across disciplines to better understand and address the multifaceted nature of these challenges. His idea that our practice of doubting requires us to rely on "hinges" has gained significant prominence in recent discussions, but many of his other observations on skepticism and the idea of ignorance also allow for a range of interesting applications. Based on a close and attentive reading of Wittgenstein's works, this workshop aims to make progress on understanding our epistemic practice and the issues surrounding it. Presentations can be on any topic connected to Wittgenstein's late epistemology and could include exegetical questions as well as topics from hinge epistemology or applications of Wittgenstein's ideas to issues like conspiracy theories, echo chambers or the epistemology of democratic processes. We are welcoming the submission of short abstracts (ca. 500-800 words) of those interested in presenting a talk at the workshop. These abstracts should be anonymized for review, but authors should disclose their name and affiliation in the e-mail. The theme of Being and Appearance in Antiquity offers a broad basis for a range of philosophical and literary topics - from metaphysics and epistemology, to the philosophy of language, logic and argumentation, to imitation in art and poetics - and for establishing links to current debates such as those on 'alternative truths' and artificial intelligence. The contrast between being and appearance is one of the central tensions in ancient thought. It is closely related to other - no less important - pairs of opposites, including knowledge and opinion, real object and appearance, truth and falsehood, sincerity and deception, reality and unreality (or non-being), original and imitation, and paradigm and image. The first known formulation of the contrast between being and appearance can be found in the philosophy of the pre-Socratic philosopher Parmenides, which is characterized by the contrast between being (ἐόν) and appearance (δοκοῦντα) and which also strongly influenced the atomists, Plato and Aristotle. The being-appearance dichotomy preoccupied ancient Western philosophy in various respects from its beginnings until late antiquity and has echoes in literature and in other arts. Wochenendseminar "Philosphie der Physik" - Thema "Information" Auch in diesem Jahr lädt die Initiative Philosophiederphysik.de [4] vom 24.-26. Oktober 2025 zu einem Wochenendseminar für Studierende ein -- diesmal dank großzügiger Unterstützung des Tübinger Forums für Wissenschaftskulturen. Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, unter dem Schwerpunktthema _„Information"_ die Philosophie der Physik sowohl inhaltlich als auch als akademische Disziplin näherzubringen. Geboten wird ein vielfältiges Programm: Fachvorträge führender Forschender (u.a. Prof. Christopher Timpson, Universität Oxford, zum Informationsbegriff in der Quanteninformation; Prof. Javier Anta, Universität Sevilla, zur Philosophie der Information; Dr. Saaskhi Dulani, John's Hopkins, zum Informationsparadoxon schwarzer Löcher), moderierte Kleingruppendiskussionen auf Basis vorbereitender Lektüre (u.a. "It from Bit" und Quantum Resource Theories) und Podiumsdiskussionen (u.a. "Was ist Philosophie der Physik?"). Erfahrungsgemäß ist es aber vor allem der Austausch jenseits des offiziellen Programms, der das Seminar zu einem intellektuell stimulierenden und gleichzeitig gemeinschaftlichen Erlebnis unter Gleichgesinnten macht. Bewerbungen aus allen Fachrichtungen sind möglich. Besonders zur Bewerbung eingeladen sind Studierende der Philosophie und der Physik im Bachelor.
