Es hilft uns, Texte schnell und gezielt zu überarbeiten, damit sie präziser, verständlicher, kohärenter und strukturierter werden. Darüber hinaus wirkt es sich positiv auf unser Schreiben und die Analyse von Literatur aus. In diesem Workshop werden wir den Feedback- und Überarbeitungsprozess diskutieren und unterschiedliche Methoden für Peer-Feedback ausprobieren. The more details can be found below and on the symposium landing page: https://mindstomovements.carrd.co/ Kind regards, The Organising Committee — From Minds to Movements: Foresight in Cognition and Activism Interdisciplinary graduate conference We are announcing a PhD symposium on Future Thinking on May 8th 2025 - May 10th 2025, in the University of Vienna. The 1st day of the conference will focus on theory, covering empirical and philosophical research on cognition and its interpretations. The 2nd day will focus on various political, social and epistemic issues considered through the lens of empirical research. On the 3rd day, the conference will be centered around future directions of research in cognitive science, and its broader implications, based on the work presented during the first two days. The conference will coincide with the Cognitive Science Hub’s Annual Lecture which will take place in the Großer Festsaal on one of the two nights of the symposium. The participants of the conference will also be invited to attend the lecture and the proceeding reception. Throughout the conference, we will cover the following topics: • Conceptual change • Predictive Processing • Anticipation and Perception • Uncertainty and Reasoning • Activism in Science • Epistemic Trust • Addressing Climate Change • The Erosion of Democracy We welcome submissions from PhD students as well as postdoctoral researchers at early stages of their career. Contributions need not be limited to empirical research and can address the aforementioned issues from broadly philosophical and political perspectives. Initial discussions with the Editor-in-Chiefs have taken place, and final confirmation will follow the commencement of the mentoring scheme, including comments by Prof. Sorin Bangu (Bergen). = Special Issue Focus The SI will focus on Ludwig Wittgenstein's influential yet underexplored work in logic and the philosophy of mathematics. While we invite submissions on classical themes, we are particularly interested in exploring intersections between Wittgenstein's ideas and fields such as the philosophy of mathematical practice, ethnomathematics, and artificial intelligence. Ludwig Wittgenstein remains one of the most impactful philosophers of the 20th century. His contributions to logic and mathematics, however, are often overshadowed by his other works. This Special Issue aims to highlight Wittgenstein's perspectives on language, logic, and mathematics, emphasizing their relevance to modern philosophical questions concerning the formal sciences. Submissions may address topics from Wittgenstein's early works, such as the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, his later writings like the Philosophical Investigations, or his contributions to the philosophy of mathematics. Hot desks for VDP students without contracts

Dear VDP Members, Our Director Benjamin Schnieder, our Student Representative Lisa Tragbar, and I have been working over the past few months to address one of the most critical issues facing our doctoral school, namely the provision of office space for students without contracts at the University of Vienna. The purpose of this message is to inform you of the results of our work and negotiations with the department's stakeholders. We will start A pilot project this summer semester (see attachment), opening two hot desks. We expect to expand the number of hot desks to seven, depending on the results of the pilot. Since this is a pilot project, we need to ask you to sign up for it. In the enclosed documents you will find an explanation of how to do it. I must also ask you to strictly follow the rules. This is extremely important because the results of the pilot will ultimately depend on how you, as a community of students, are able to work together. I am confident that the results will be optimal. Speitel (IVC Fellow) Mathematical Determinacy Philosophy of Science Colloquium The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows. Date: 06/03/2025 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3A Abstract: The existence of non-standard models of important mathematical theories, such as first-order Peano-Arithmetic, threatens to undermine the claim of the moderate mathematical realist that non-mysterious access to mathematical structures is possible on the basis of our best mathematical theories. The move to frameworks stronger than FOL to articulate ‘better’ versions of these theories is denied to the moderate realist on the grounds that it merely shifts the indeterminacy ‘one level up’ into the meta-theory by — illegitimately, — assuming determinacy of the notions needed to formulate such logics. In this talk I want to outline the beginnings of a response to the determinacy challenge facing the moderate mathematical realist. I argue that the unique determinability of notions that enable categorical characterizations of important mathematical structures provides grounds for claiming naturalistically acceptable access to these structures, sufficient to resolve the determinacy challenge. I will illustrate the idea by showing how the mathematical realist may achieve arithmetical determinacy, and discuss ways to extend this approach to richer mathematical theories.
