Description: The SColA project studies mechanisms underlying the emergence and stability of collective agency. It first investigates the role of shared beliefs and intentions for the emergence and stability of collective agents, and second, it studies how these shared attitudes contribute to the stability, growth, or decline of autonomy in such groups. The project will do so through a computational and game-theoretical study of so-called' team reasoning' (Bacharach, 2006), an extension of classical non-cooperative game theory in which the players can reason either individually or as a team member. Candidate profile: * Initiative and aptitude for teamwork. * Background in Philosophy or Political Science, interested in theoretical questions and computational approaches. * Familiarity with decision, game theory, and practical philosophy in the analytic tradition. * Basic experience with programming. The position is relatively flexible and can be adapted to the successful candidate's timeline and experience, e.g. by turning it to a 1.0 FTE for a shorter period. Its main purpose is to conduct scientific research related to the SColA project. It could, however, also be used to prepare a funding application for a follow-up position. The SColA project finishes on November 30th, 2025, and the position cannot be extended beyond that date. Remote work is possible. Wigner was surprised that the mathematical structure of a physical theory not only accurately describes the physical world but also leads to new predictions and further advances. This phenomenon puzzled him, leading to the term "unreasonable effectiveness": Why is mathematics so effective in describing the natural world? More recently, a Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for work that many might consider to belong to computer science. The first image of a black hole, for example, relied heavily on sophisticated code. Formal tools are now integral to many complex measurements, cutting across various scientific practices. We are organizing a two-day exploratory workshop. The main theme will broadly explore the applicability of mathematics both within and outside its traditional boundaries. Day 1 will focus on the use of mathematical tools in the sciences, particularly in the life sciences. The life sciences are increasingly becoming more mathematical, and there are ongoing fruitful discussions-both scientific and philosophical-on how mathematics should be coordinated with biological and medical phenomena. Day 2 will shift to internal mathematical considerations, such as how formal tools, like theorem-proving software, can be applied to these interdisciplinary efforts. Moreover, "applicability" has become a major theme in mathematical research, as some analytical resources prove to be more suitable for different contexts within pure mathematics. This is a topic that has recently garnered the attention of philosophers of mathematics, especially those interested in the "practice turn" in philosophy. Finally, a common thread throughout both days of the workshop is the ethical dimension. The aim of this workshop is to investigate and discuss the relation between moral rights and normative reasons. The workshop will focus on (but is not limited to) questions such as the following: What are the connections between moral rights, moral duties, and moral reasons? Can rights be analysed in terms of reasons or should rights be regarded as reason-providing? What (if anything) do reasons-based analyses of rights imply for the justification of moral rights and for first-order moral theory? Thesis Completion Fellowship (deadline 18 Nov) The goal of the fellowship is to support highly qualified doctoral students successfully complete their dissertations within the funding period of up to 6 months. To apply for the fellowship, you and your supervisor(s) must submit a completed application, which is available in our Moodle (in "All Forms"). Amount: EUR 1,050 per month Duration: up to 6 months The scholar will not be provided with office space at the university. The scholar may not have received financial support for the doctoral project for more than two years (through contractual employment with the university, a third party, or a fellowship) and not within the six months prior to application. At the time of application, work on the dissertation must have progressed to the point where it can be realistically expected that the dissertation can be submitted by the end of the funding period (maximum 6 months). Multiple funding from other organizations or the university is excluded. Recipients are responsible for all taxes and insurance during the fellowship period and are advised that any net annual income in excess of EUR 8,580 will be taxable. The scholarship will be considered as "income from self-employment".

Date: 14/11/2024 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 2G Abstract: Instrumental devices are linguistic expressions that are formal or non-representational but nevertheless indispensable or at least instrumentally useful for certain theoretical purposes. We give a systematic study of such expressions and their roles in theorizing, thus offering a unified treatment of instrumental devices across different philosophical areas. Specifically, we present an explication of two general types of such devices, namely merely expressive devices and merely inferential devices and discuss their respective theoretical roles based on a number of philosophical examples. Joint work with Hannes Leitgeb (LMU Munich).

Summer School Call for Applications (Deadline: February 15, 2025) 23rd univie: summer school Scientific World Conceptions (USS-SWC) The History and Epistemology of Econometrics Vienna, July 7-11, 2025 https://summerschool-ivc.univie.ac.at/ Course Description Models and their econometric estimation play an increasingly important role in modern economic and political life. From macroeconomic policy and financial regulation to public health and climate policy, models contribute to shaping policies. The generation of ever more data is likely to support the proliferation of models and econometrics. Research resources in academia focus on the theoretical foundations of the underlying model and on the statistical methods of econometrics; much less attention is devoted to the epistemological challenges of the underlying concepts, the normative challenges of the everyday work with econometrics, and the application of its results in policy decisions and evaluation. The objective of this program is to increase attention amongst philosophers of science, academic economists, and empirical economists in policy institutions (eg, central banks) to these issues. The course is also structured around a particular point of view namely, that economics is a science of models and that most of the main features of econometrics relate generally to the role of models in science. Topics will be selected reflecting participants interests and may include: * History of econometrics to frame the philosophical issues to be discussed in the course * The Vienna Circle and econometrics * Values and Ethical Pitfalls in econometric research * Key philosophical issues of how models relate to the world and how they relate to each other * Data: observation, classification, and measurement of economic variables from a modeling point of view * Conceptual issues related to modeling randomness * The identification problem: how possibly, if at all possible, to map descriptive relations onto theoretical variables? * Issues related to optional stopping, search methodologies, and the proper interpretation of results obtained through search * Different approaches to the nature of causation and different strategies of causal inference * The conceptual basis of graphical causal modeling and controlled, natural, and field experiments * The conceptual issues surrounding the problem of model uncertainty, as well as some of the strategies economists use to address it Main Lecturers: Kevin D. Hoover (Duke University) Kevin D. Hoover is Professor of Economics and Philosophy and Senior Fellow of the Center for the History of Political Economy at Duke University. He is the editor of the journal History of Political Economy and a past editor of the Journal of Economic Methodology. His current research addresses causality, causal inference in economics, the history of macroeconomics, philosophical issues related to the microfoundations of macroeconomics, and the engagement with economics of the American pragmatist philosopher Charles. S. Peirce. He is the author of The New Classical Macroeconomics, the Methodology of Empirical Macroeconomics, Causality in Macroeconomics, Applied Intermediate Macroeconomics, as well as many articles in monetary and macroeconomics, the history of economics, the philosophy of economics, and applied econometrics. Jennifer Jhun (Duke University) Jennifer Jhun is an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department at Duke University, as well as a Senior Fellow of the Center for the History of Political Economy. He is particularly interested in the practices of measurement and modelling and the role of mathematics in social science. The first step in these practices is to make sense of the available data. Visualisations play an important role in this. His current research project Vision and Visualisation is nearing completion with a book manuscript Shaping the Phenomena. The program is primarily directed at graduate students and junior researchers in philosophy of science and economics as well as empirical economists at policy institutions (eg, central banks) but the organizers also encourage applications from people in all stages of their career and from fields other than economics that apply advanced econometrics. A travel lover stops flying to distant places in the face of climate change. A politician begins to seek power instead of justice. Sometimes changing preferences seems to be a good thing; at other times, it appears regrettable. How we evaluate such changes is an important question. At the same time, we must understand how preference change comes about in the first place. Why do one person's preferences change in response to a given situation when the preferences of another person - in a similar situation - do not? When is it rational to change one's preferences? Despite its strengths, standard decision theory cannot answer these questions. That is, it cannot describe fundamental preference changes. This calls for a paradigm shift in the relevant academic disciplines. However, it is only recently that decision theorists have started to develop new approaches to examining the question of preference change. Furthermore, crucial normative issues have been neglected. For example, once we better understand preference change, some might suggest that we should try to change people's preferences, building on recent influential research concerning changing the behavior and choices of individuals via "nudges" or by modifying the "choice-architecture." This project will adopt a conceptual, model-building, rational and normative approach to motivational change and develop and empirically test an original model of preference change. Its main objectives are: (1) To understand motivational change better, both descriptively and conceptually (What is motivational change? How should motivational change be modeled?) (2) To develop an original model of motivational change - the "commitment-based theory" - and test whether it is normatively and descriptively adequate (Does the theory stand up to normative testing?
