New ECTs rules: There are new rules for the distribution of the compulsory 24 ECTS credits in your programme. The rule that doctoral students must complete 15 ECTs in doctoral seminars has been removed, and the distribution of the 24 ECTs will be decided between you and your supervisor in the Doctoral Agreement, and modified through the Annual Progress Reports. The Director of Studies will approve the proposed distribution, taking into account whether or not it is beneficial either to your PhD project or to your training and career. The more details can be found below and on the symposium landing page: https://mindstomovements.carrd.co/ Kind regards, The Organising Committee — From Minds to Movements: Foresight in Cognition and Activism Interdisciplinary graduate conference We are announcing a PhD symposium on Future Thinking on May 8th 2025 - May 10th 2025, in the University of Vienna. The 1st day of the conference will focus on theory, covering empirical and philosophical research on cognition and its interpretations. The 2nd day will focus on various political, social and epistemic issues considered through the lens of empirical research. On the 3rd day, the conference will be centered around future directions of research in cognitive science, and its broader implications, based on the work presented during the first two days. The conference will coincide with the Cognitive Science Hub’s Annual Lecture which will take place in the Großer Festsaal on one of the two nights of the symposium. The participants of the conference will also be invited to attend the lecture and the proceeding reception. Throughout the conference, we will cover the following topics: • Conceptual change • Predictive Processing • Anticipation and Perception • Uncertainty and Reasoning • Activism in Science • Epistemic Trust • Addressing Climate Change • The Erosion of Democracy We welcome submissions from PhD students as well as postdoctoral researchers at early stages of their career. Contributions need not be limited to empirical research and can address the aforementioned issues from broadly philosophical and political perspectives. Br., Deadline: 31.05.2025) Barbara Huber Scholarship Program The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law in Freiburg i. Br. / Germany (MPI-CSL) is inviting applications for its Barbara Huber Scholarship Program. The Research Scholarship program is open to outstanding academics at all levels from foreign research institutions for particularly innovative research projects that contribute significantly to scientific progress in the areas of Criminology [2], Public Law [3], or Criminal Law [4]. Dear VDP Members, Our Director Benjamin Schnieder, our Student Representative Lisa Tragbar, and I have been working over the past few months to address one of the most critical issues facing our doctoral school, namely the provision of office space for students without contracts at the University of Vienna. The purpose of this message is to inform you of the results of our work and negotiations with the department's stakeholders. We will start A pilot project this summer semester (see attachment), opening two hot desks. We expect to expand the number of hot desks to seven, depending on the results of the pilot. Since this is a pilot project, we need to ask you to sign up for it. In the enclosed documents you will find an explanation of how to do it. I must also ask you to strictly follow the rules. This is extremely important because the results of the pilot will ultimately depend on how you, as a community of students, are able to work together. I am confident that the results will be optimal.
