Summerschool with Karen Bennett on *Social Ontology and "Traditional" Metaphysics*

Dear All, Benjamin Schnieder and I are currently organizing a summerschool with Karen Bennett (Rutgers) on the topic of *Social Ontology and “Traditional” Metaphysics*. The course is primarily geared towards advanced (PhD and MA) students, but everyone is very welcome to attend. Please feel free to forward this mail to anyone who might be interested. Some more information: Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in social ontology. What are races, genders, social groups, political boundaries? How does social construction work? These are interesting questions in their own right. But there are further interesting questions about how they relate to more ‘traditional’ questions in metaphysics. In this course, we will explore both the first order questions in social ontology and meta-questions about what we can learn from looking into the metaphysics of social entities. The course will take place from Monday, July 18th to Friday, July 22nd 2022 at the University of Vienna. Workshop - The Nature, Role, and Significance of Uptake - 15-16 September

Dear Colleagues, Please find below details of the following workshop: The Nature, Role, and Significance of Uptake University of Vienna (Neues Institutsgebäude), 15-16 September 2022 Speakers: Quill Kukla, Guy Longworth, Maximilian de Gaynesford, Jeremy Wanderer, Laura Caponetto, Lucy McDonald, Grace Paterson, Sarah Fisher, Leo Townsend Description: In How to Do Things With Words, JL Austin famously linked the performance of illocutionary acts with uptake, writing: Unless a certain effect is achieved, the illocutionary act will not have been happily, successfully performed [] I cannot be said to have warned an audience unless it hears what I say and takes what I say in a certain sense. An effect must be achieved on the audience if the illocutionary act is to be carried out. How should we put it best here? And how should we limit it? Generally the effect amounts to bringing about the understanding of the meaning and of the force of the locution. So the performance of an illocutionary act involves the securing of uptake. These somewhat vague, hesitant remarks have spawned a number of debates within subsequent speech act theory about the character and function of uptake. What is the precise nature of uptake? Should it be understood in psychological terms (perhaps as the audiences beliefs about the intentions of the speaker), or should it be construed in more social and normative terms (perhaps as the normative effect of the speech act on the relevant social situation)? What role, if any, does uptake play in the performance of illocutionary acts? Is uptake simply the characteristic goal of illocutionary acts, or is securing uptake a necessary condition for their performance? Alternatively is uptake a sufficient but not necessary condition of the performance of illocutionary acts? Might there be some illocutionary acts whose performance depends on uptake, while others do not? Finally, what is the broader political significance of uptake? How does uptake relate to practices of silencing, discursive injustice, and epistemic injustice? This workshop investigates these and related questions about the nature, role, and function of uptake. Liebe Kolleg_innen, wir möchten Sie herzlich zur nächsten Veranstaltung der Vortragsreihe „Phänomenologische Forschungen“ einladen: 23./24.6.2022 (Vortrag und Workshop) Barbara Weber (University of British Columbia, Vancouver) VORTRAG Do., 23.6.2022, 17.00–19.00 Uhr, HS 3B, Institut für Philosophie der Universität Wien, Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien Körper, Raum und Politik: Versuch einer phänomenologischen Re-Konstitution des Politischen Abstract: In dem Maße, da wir nicht mehr bezeugen, sondern beobachten, keine sozialen Erfahrungen machen, sondern als Voyeur den Anderen objektivieren, verschwindet der Mensch als lebendiges Dasein aus dem öffentlichen Raum. Der politische Teilnehmer wird zum bloβen Betrachter, welcher sich in die Ökonomie der Privatsphäre zurückgezogen hat. Das Sichtbarwerden des Menschen in seiner Körperlichkeit und Verletzlichkeit ist jedoch das Fundament für ethisches Bewusstsein und politische Verantwortung. Ein Rückzug in die Monade des Selbst führt hingegen zur Destruktion des Politischen: Denn das auf den privaten Raum reduzierte Individuum ist seiner sozialen Funktionen beraubt. Ziel des Vortrages ist die phänomenologische Skizzierung „des öffentlichen Raumes“. Gemeint ist derjenige sinnlich vermittelte und intersubjektive Bereich politischen Handelns, in welchem fühlende und leiblich engagierte Personen durch Kommunikation und Deliberation sowohl an den Aktionen teilhaben als auch von deren Auswirkungen betroffen sind. Ziel ist es zu darzustellen, auf welche Weise die Verkörperung des Menschen - sehend und sichtbar, fühlend und fühlbar - die Sphäre des Öffentlichen konstituiert. Der Leib ist Umschlagstelle zwischen Eigenem und Fremden und durch seine Materialität und Sichtbarkeit in den Stoff der Welt „eingenäht“. Veli Mitova Forum Talk "White Ignorance Undermines Internalism about Epistemic Blame"

This week the Forum is excited to have a talk by Veli Mitova: White ignorance undermines internalism about epistemic blame! Consequently, there will be no reading. As always, everyone is welcome to join, especially newcomers - just show up! Abstract: According to the standard story about blame, non-culpable ignorance is an excuse: if I dont know that the drink I am giving you contains poison, I am blameless for poisoning you. White ignorancethe oppressors ignorance of the experiences of the oppressedshares a surprising number of features with this kind of case despite being a clearly culpable form of ignorance. For instance, it is typically invisible to its owner, rendering her ignorant of its epistemic and moral harms. This makes the standard blame-story unable to account for the very real intuition that white ignorance is both morally and epistemically blameworthy. In this talk, I focus on epistemic blame. I first draw on the epistemic-excuses literature to argue that white ignorance is epistemically blameworthy. I then show that we can only make sense of this claim if we reject the reasons-internalism implicit in the standard story about epistemic blame. Franks "Gegenstand des Wissens" findet am Dienstag, 14. Juni um 18:00 Uhr CET statt. Die Gespräche werden auf russisch geführt, sehr fortgeschrittene Kenntnisse der russischen Sprache (mind. Niveau B2) werden daher vorausgesetzt. Am 14. Juni wird nach einer kurzen Einleitung und einem Überblick über das bisher Besprochene das Kapitel 4 aus dem "Gegenstand des Wissens" S. L. Franks unter wissenschaftlicher Leitung von Herrn Univ. Prof. Dr. Konstantin (PSTGU) erörtert. Es geht vor allem um unsere Wahrnehmung und Vorstellung von "Realität" an sich - soweit diese überhaupt eingrenzbar sei und inwieweit wir überhaupt in der Lage sein sollen, "Realität" in ihrer mannigfaltigen Gesamtheit aller Erscheinungen und in ihrer wechselnden Wirkmacht (Zeit, Gedächtnis, etc.) auf uns zu erkennen - ohne hier jedenfalls transzendentale Grenzüberschreitungen vornehmen zu müssen. In diesem Zusammenhang werden auch Positionen anderer großer mitteleuropäischer Philosophen angesprochen.
