Dear All,
How do we create meaningful change? Should we focus on transforming institutions? Or should we inspire individuals to adopt new habits. How about both?
I’d like to invite you and your colleagues to join us on 30 April 2025 to celebrate the launch of Somebody Should Do Something: How Anyone Can Help Create Social Change (MIT Press). Co-author and Philosopher Daniel Kelly (Purdue University, USA) is joined by Cesy Leonard (Activist & Founder of Radikale Töchter), Asya Passinsky (Philosopher at Central European University) and Martin Russ (Managing Director at AustriaTech) to discuss the book’s ideas and share their own.
We hope you’ll join us to share your perspective, too! Book your free tickets here<https://www.eventbrite.at/e/somebody-should-do-something-how-anyone-can-hel…>.

Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Jennifer Whyte (IVC Fellow)
TOWARDS A WAISMANNIAN THEORY OF CONCEPTUAL ENGINEERING
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium
with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 10/04/2025
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS

Abstract:
Much philosophical attention has recently been paid to Conceptual
Engineering - or, the intentional modification of concepts by
philosophers in order to achieve epistemic, ethical, or political ends.
The most controversial aspect of conceptual engineering are its aims,
but there is also much debate over the mechanism by which the process
could even be carried out. In this project, I will propose a mechanism
derived from the work of Friedrich Waismann by which intentional
conceptual amelioration can - and does - occur. I will then argue that
this account of conceptual engineering solves a number of standing
problems in the literature, but in doing so, places some key checks on
the ambition of conceptual engineering as a project.
Dear all,
we are delighted to invite you to the next installment of the APSE talks
series, as well as to the accompanying reading circle prior to the talk.
The talk will be given by Remco Heesen (LSE).
When: Thursday, 10.04.2025, 15:00 - 17:00
Where: HS 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien)
The Division of Cognitive Labour under Poisson Productivity
When a community of academics faces a research problem and multiple
methodological approaches to solving it, how much effort should they
devote to each approach to maximise their chances of solving the problem
and minimise the time to a solution? This problem is known as the
division of cognitive labour (DCL). More specifically, Philip Kitcher,
Michael Strevens, and Kevin Zollman have asked whether and to what
extent academics' expectations of credit for solving the problem can act
as an invisible hand to produce an efficient DCL without a need for
top-down planning. Here I revisit this question using a modelling
framework (key ingredient: academic productivity follows a Poisson
distribution) that has more empirical support than Kitcher's, Strevens',
and Zollman's, and is also more flexible in that it can be used to
address broader questions about credit incentives. The somewhat
surprising finding is that in this framework the DCL problem becomes
essentially trivial. I'd like to discuss implications for how we think
about the model and/or the DCL problem.

The acute crises of planetary life do not only manifest themselves in
life-threatening effects on physical integrity. They change the way we
experience our environment, how we construct our interactions with it from
perceptions, sensations, desires, and words.
While the physical effects are already difficult to grasp in their scope,
the transformations in the ways of interacting with the world from our
entanglement in it quickly elude any ordering grasp, which is often based
on a human self-image as a controlling power.
Things look somewhat different when we look at the arts: Here we find
seismographic capacities that register and make accessible even seemingly
insignificant changes and their effects.
The planned platform addresses the challenge of providing a broad insight
into current realizations of these capacities. Three nodes serve as a guide
for this insight, which aims to place less emphasis on controlling order
and more on the richest possible picture of the intricate web of experience:
(1) The evidently undeniable nature of climate change brings to light
global interdependencies that are a matter of life and death. This creates
an obligation to recognize how interconnected we are and how we are called
upon to reorganize the world we live in, precisely because it is becoming
increasingly incomprehensible and inaccessible without its ongoing
destruction.
(2) The inevitable return of suppressed nature takes forms that manifest
themselves in a complex interplay between external circumstances and inner
fantasies, dreams and desires, which stubbornly resists controlling access,
but at the same time finds expression, for example, in cultural products.
(3) In contemporary literature, we observe a shift toward aesthetic
descriptions of extreme climatic conditions that shape narratives in new
ways. Instead of traditional narratives driven by subjects, we are
witnessing a literature that foregrounds sensuality. This openness to
sensory perceptions could be the key to challenging dominant narratives and
fostering an interrelational understanding of our experiences.

Abstract:
There is a rather widespread consensus, among historians of philosophy, concerning the decline of Wittgenstein amid recent analytic philosophy. However, the exact import of such a decline, its chronological development, as well as its causes and several other features, are difficult to ascertain with the traditional methods of the history of philosophy. In this talk we apply a distant reading approach, and a variety of other quantitative methods, to provide a more reliable and accurate account of Wittgenstein's decline. We focus on a corpus consisting of the metadata of US PhD dissertations in philosophy from 1981 to 2010 (although other kinds of data are also taken into consideration), and we try to relate the topic of the dissertation to the success of the candidate in his/her subsequent academic career. The results of this analysis, corroborated by other evidence, allow us to put forth the more reliable and accurate account just hinted at, and at the same time to suggest – as a contribution to external history of philosophy – a plausible mechanism at the basis of the decline itself, notably a process driven by those who controlled the recruitment policies in the philosophy departments.

Dear all,

Alexandrova (University of Cambridge).
Talk:

Where: HS 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien)
Title & abstract:
Social Science: A Constructivist Account
What sort of inquiry is social science? This question used to preoccupy
philosophers but fell off their agenda due to a stalemate between
so-called naturalists, who took the ideal to be natural science, and
exceptionalists, who allied social sciences with humanities. I show that
both positions commit the error of contrastivism, namely defining social
science in contrast to these two traditions, which inevitably ends up
caricaturing them. Using recent advances in philosophy, I formulate
constructivism about social sciences, a view that denies an essence to
this inquiry and grounds it in the needs of communities to understand
and improve themselves.
Reading Circle:
When: right before the talk - Thursday, 03.04.2025, 13:00 - 15:00

Herzliche Einladung zur Buchpräsentation "Kafka als Patient : Stationen in Wien und Kierling" am 28.04.2025 um 18.00 Uhr an der Fachbereichsbibliothek Philosophie und Psychologie
https://bibliothek.univie.ac.at/events/008289.htmlhttps://bibliothek.univie.ac.at/fb-philosophie-psychologie/files/Einladung_…
Erstmals in Buchform

Dear all,
we warmly invite you to the next APSE (Applied Philosophy of Science and
Epistemology) Reading Circle. The talk will be held by Natalie Alana

Where: HS 3A, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien)
Creating a Strong Foundation for Neurodiverse Epistemology
Autistic people have had unprecedented success building effective
epistemic communities online. A detailed analysis of the conditions and
practices which produced and sustain these communities would be
illuminating for both the epistemology of social media and the emerging
area of neurodiverse epistemology. However, epistemology has only
recently begun to theorise about marginalised groups, and many of its
foundational principles are ill-suited to this work. In this talk I'll
outline a planned project to develop a novel approach to neurodiverse
epistemology, which challenges some of the fundamental assumptions of
the early, exploratory literature, and lays the groundwork for a
participatory methodology which can do real justice to neurodiverse
communities.
Speaker Bio:
Natalie Alana Ashton works on the political and social aspects of
epistemology, and is interested in how oppression and power effect
political deliberation in the online sphere. In the past she has focused
on theoretical issues (exploring how to integrate feminist standpoint
theory and hinge epistemology, whether these views should be understood
as relativist, and what that means). Her current work is on the
practical applications of such views: what they tell us about social
media legislation, platform design, and online communities.
Reading Circle (1-3 PM):
We will focus our discussion on an article by Natalie Ashton and a few
pages of an interim project report (attached pdf):

The Rethinking Metaphysics Workshop with Amie Thomasson is taking place next Monday, March 24th from 10 AM to 5 PM. The workshop is on Amie Thomasson's forthcoming book, Rethinking Metaphysics, which challenges the Quinean approaches to metaphysics that have predominated in the latter half of the 20th and 21st centuries and proposes instead an approach that foregrounds the techniques and methods of conceptual engineering.
The workshop will consist of four 75-minute sessions, with each session devoted to a part of Thomasson's book. Each of the sessions will begin with a brief synopsis of the relevant chapters and critical remarks from a commentator, followed by a response from Thomasson. The remaining time will then be devoted to discussion. The schedule is as follows:
10:00–10:15 AM: Précis by Amie Thomasson
10:15–11:30 AM: Session 1 on chs. 1–3, led by Alice van't Hoff
11:30–11:45 AM: Coffee break
11:45 AM–1:00 PM: Session 2 on chs. 4–5, led by Emilie Pagano
1:00–2:00 PM: Lunch break
2:00–3:15 PM: Session 3 on chs. 6–7, led by Matthew Simpson
3:15–3:30 PM: Coffee break
3:30–4:45 PM: Session 4 on chs. 8–10, led by Viktoria Knoll
4:45 PM: Concluding Remarks by Tim Crane, followed by Reception

Alma Wittlin (1899, Lemberg/UA – 1991, Palo Alto/CA), promovierte Kunsthistorikerin (1925, Univ.
In Museum. Learning. Democracy. The Work and Life of Alma S. Wittlin (1899-1991) (Bd. 19, Reihe „Emigration – Exil – Kontinuität“, Herausg.

Abstract
A priori knowledge in the Kantian sense is characterized as being
independent from experience, insofar as it is necessary for the possibility
of experience in general. This notably includes the fundamental principles
of geometry and physics. With scientific changes such as non-Euclidean
geometry and relativistic physics, there arose the question whether the
Kantian a priori ought to be revised in the light of the best current
theories or replaced by pragmatic considerations or conventions. This talk
will offer a review of the progressive relativization of the Kantian a
priori from the Marburg School of neo-Kantianism to Hans Reichenbachs early
work. It will then use Paps taxonomy to differentiate among these early
relativizing strategies and to contrast them with attempts to relativize the
Kantian a priori in contemporary philosophy of science.

Herzliche Einladung zur Buchpräsentation "Ecological Reasonings" am 24.03.2025 um 18h in der Fachbereichsbibliothek Philosophie und Psychologie.
https://bibliothek.univie.ac.at/events/008225.html

WHY STRATEGIC SCIENCE SKEPTICS ARE NOT “MODERN-DAY GALILEOS”. DEBUNKING
THE ARGUMENT FROM SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium
with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 20/03/2025
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS
3A
Abstract:
Strategic science skeptics criticize scientific claims solely to promote
non-epistemic (for instance, political and economic) goals. Strategic
science skeptics present arguments to support their criticisms of
scientific claims. In this paper, I will analyze and debunk a neglected
argument exploited by strategic science skeptics: the argument from
scientific revolutions (aka the "Galileo gambit"). According to this
skeptical argument, strategic science skeptics liken themselves to key
figures in scientific revolutions throughout the history of science - in
particular, to Galileo Galilei - in order to enhance the credibility of
their own claims. In this talk, I will argue that the argument from
scientific revolutions is not sound, because at least one of its
premises (stating that skeptics are, like Galileo Galilei, revolutionary
scientists) is false.
Dear all,
we are delighted to invite you all to the next installment of the APSE

Dear colleagues,
We would like to remind you that submissions for the Vienna Doctoral
School of Philosophy Summer School 2025, The Philosophy of Iris Murdoch,
are still open.
The details can be found below and on the summer school webpage:
https://pace.phl.univie.ac.at/the-philosophy-of-iris-murdoch/.
Instructors: Justin Broackes (Brown), Cathy Mason (CEU), Silvia
Caprioglio Panizza (UPCE/Tübingen), Rachael Wiseman (Liverpool)
Dates: July 14th-18th, 2025
Deadline for application: March 30th, 2025
Location: Neues Institutsgebäude (NIG), Universitätstrasse 7, 1010 Wien
Overview of the Topic
Although Iris Murdoch is still best known for her novels, her
philosophical work is finally beginning to receive the recognition that
it deserves. An Oxford philosopher, educated during the Second World War
and later employed there as a lecturer, Murdoch’s philosophy marks a
significant departure from the dominant analytic tradition of her place
and time: a return to a philosophy deeply attuned to the human condition
and to metaphysical thinking. Murdoch’s ideas began to develop with a
critique of the prevailing approaches to language and thought, later
evolving into a novel conception of ethics. Engaged with both analytic
and continental traditions, she proposed vision as the basic category of
evaluation and freedom as the ability to see the world rightly, rather
than as detachment from it. As opposed to the amoral view of
metaphysics, she sought to reanimate the concept of a world that finds
meaning through “the Good”. She writes in dialogue with a diverse range
of philosophers, including Plato, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer,
Wittgenstein, Heidegger, French existentialists, and Derrida, among
others, and she has had a strong influence on some of today’s best-known
philosophers, including Cora Diamond, John McDowell, Martha Nussbaum,
and Charles Taylor.
The summer school aims to bring together promising young philosophers
with some of the leading experts on Murdoch’s philosophical work.
Participants will have the chance to engage with her major themes,
uncover less-explored aspects of her work, and contribute to the ongoing
discussion of her ideas with their own research.
Application & Fees
We welcome applications from PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and
advanced MA students in philosophy and related disciplines. To apply for
participation, please send the following documents to Matt Dougherty
(doughertym(a)ceu.edu):
1. Curriculum Vitae (max. 2 pages)
2. Statement of Purpose (no longer than 1 page), explaining the
relevance of the summer school to your study, research, teaching and/or
other professional work
3. Statement of Financial Aid (optional). We can offer partial financial
support (including the coverage of the school fees) to the participants
whose home institutions cannot cover their expenses. We therefore ask
the applicants who wish to be considered for funding to briefly describe
their situation in the statement.
4. Abstract (optional; max. 250 words). If you would like to present
your work at the summer school, please send us a short abstract of your
presentation. Since the number of slots for student presentations is
limited, this will help us decide on how to allocate them.
The summer school fee is 75 Euros. The fee includes the student union
fee of 25 Euros, which is required by Austrian law to register at the
University of Vienna and to receive a certificate of completion of the
summer school.
Please, submit your application by March 30, 23.59 CET.
Contact Email: doughertym(a)ceu.edu
We will notify you of the decision by April 7, 23.59 CET.

Was ist Musik?
Herzlichen Dank!
Mit besten Grüßen
Jonas Puchta

Dear all,
I am delighted to invite you all to the fourth installment of the
Trans*formations talk series at the Department of Philosophy, University
of Vienna. The talk series provides insights into recent developments in
trans* philosophizing.
The next talk, "On the Cass Review: A Philosophy of Science Perspective"
will be given by Emelia Stanley, University of Vienna, on March 11,
2025, at 16:30 in HS 2H (NIG, 2nd Floor).
Abstract:
The Cass Review was a report commissioned by NHS England in 2020 to
recommend new practice guidelines in transgender healthcare for
children and adolescents, as well as to document problems with the
existing gender identity services. Following its release last year, it
was cited by both major political parties to justify the wholesale
closure of the services, a halt and then ban on the prescription of
puberty blockers to under 18s, and the suspension of a pending law to
outlaw conversion-therapy. A valuable case study as a piece of
scientific research and communication, this presentation examines the
scientific Cass Review from a philosophy of science perspective,
evaluating its conclusions and methodology with respect to notions of
evidential norms, standpoint epistemology, prejudicial attitudes, and
the current paradigm for trans* healthcare.
Bio:
Emelia Stanley is a Philosophy PhD candidate at the University of
Vienna. She is pursuing a thesis in the philosophy of logic and
mathematics, but writes independently about trans* issues in the UK
and abroad from a personal and philosophical perspective.
There will be drinks and snacks kindly provided by the Vienna Doctoral

Mathematical Determinacy
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 06/03/2025
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3A
Abstract:
The existence of non-standard models of important mathematical theories, such as first-order Peano-Arithmetic, threatens to undermine the claim of the moderate mathematical realist that non-mysterious access to mathematical structures is possible on the basis of our best mathematical theories. The move to frameworks stronger than FOL to articulate ‘better’ versions of these theories is denied to the moderate realist on the grounds that it merely shifts the indeterminacy ‘one level up’ into the meta-theory by — illegitimately, — assuming determinacy of the notions needed to formulate such logics.
In this talk I want to outline the beginnings of a response to the determinacy challenge facing the moderate mathematical realist. I argue that the unique determinability of notions that enable categorical characterizations of important mathematical structures provides grounds for claiming naturalistically acceptable access to these structures, sufficient to resolve the determinacy challenge. I will illustrate the idea by showing how the mathematical realist may achieve arithmetical determinacy, and discuss ways to extend this approach to richer mathematical theories.

Summer School
Call for Applications
(Deadline: February 15, 2025)
23rd univie: summer school Scientific World Conceptions (USS-SWC)
The History and Epistemology of Econometrics
Vienna, July 7-11, 2025
https://summerschool-ivc.univie.ac.at/
Course Description
Models and their econometric estimation play an increasingly important role
in modern economic and political life. From macroeconomic policy and
financial regulation to public health and climate policy, models contribute
to shaping policies. The generation of ever more data is likely to support
the proliferation of models and econometrics. Research resources in academia
focus on the theoretical foundations of the underlying model and on the
statistical methods of econometrics; much less attention is devoted to the
epistemological challenges of the underlying concepts, the normative
challenges of the everyday work with econometrics, and the application of
its results in policy decisions and evaluation.
The objective of this program is to increase attention amongst philosophers
of science, academic economists, and empirical economists in policy
institutions (eg, central banks) to these issues.
The course is also structured around a particular point of
view namely, that economics is a science of models and that most of the
main features of econometrics relate generally to the role of models in
science.
Topics will be selected reflecting participants interests and may include:
* History of econometrics to frame the philosophical issues to be
discussed in the course
* The Vienna Circle and econometrics
* Values and Ethical Pitfalls in econometric research
* Key philosophical issues of how models relate to the world and how
they relate to each other
* Data: observation, classification, and measurement of economic
variables from a modeling point of view
* Conceptual issues related to modeling randomness
* The identification problem: how possibly, if at all possible, to
map descriptive relations onto theoretical variables?
* Issues related to optional stopping, search methodologies, and the
proper interpretation of results obtained through search
* Different approaches to the nature of causation and different
strategies of causal inference
* The conceptual basis of graphical causal modeling and controlled,
natural, and field experiments
* The conceptual issues surrounding the problem of model
uncertainty, as well as some of the strategies economists use to address it
Main Lecturers:
Kevin D. Hoover (Duke University)
Kevin D. Hoover is Professor of Economics and Philosophy and Senior Fellow
of the Center for the History of Political Economy at Duke University. He
is the editor of the journal History of Political Economy and a past editor
of the Journal of Economic Methodology. His current research addresses
causality, causal inference in economics, the history of macroeconomics,
philosophical issues related to the microfoundations of macroeconomics, and
the engagement with economics of the American pragmatist philosopher
Charles. S. Peirce. He is the author of The New Classical Macroeconomics,
the Methodology of Empirical Macroeconomics, Causality in Macroeconomics,
Applied Intermediate Macroeconomics, as well as many articles in monetary
and macroeconomics, the history of economics, the philosophy of economics,
and applied econometrics.
Jennifer Jhun (Duke University)
Jennifer Jhun is an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department at Duke
University, as well as a Senior Fellow of the Center for the History of
Political Economy. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of
Pittsburgh. Her main research interests are in the philosophy of science,
especially philosophy of economics, but also in issues in other areas, such
as psychology and physics. She is currently engaged on a project that
investigates antitrust from a historical and philosophy-of-science
perspective: Whats the Point of ceteris Paribus? or, How to Understand
Supply and Demand Curves. Philosophy of Science 85, no. 2 (2018): 271-292;
Economics, Equilibrium Methods, and Multi-scale Modeling. Erkenntnis 86,
no. 2 (2021): 457-472; Multi-Model Reasoning in Economics: The Case of
COMPASS. Philosophy of Science 90, no. 4 (2023): 836-854; Implied Market
Shares and Antitrust Markets as Fuzzy Sets. Forthcoming at The Antitrust
Bulletin. (Joint with Matthew Panhans, Federal Trade Commission)
Guest Lecturer:
Marcel Boumans (University of Utrecht)
Marcel Boumans is historian and philosopher of science at Utrecht
University. His main research focus is on understanding empirical research
practices in science outside the lab from a philosophy of
science-in-practice perspective. He is particularly interested in the
practices of measurement and modelling and the role of mathematics in social
science. The first step in these practices is to make sense of the available
data. Visualisations play an important role in this. His current research
project Vision and Visualisation is nearing completion with a book
manuscript Shaping the Phenomena.
The program is primarily directed at graduate students and junior
researchers in philosophy of science and economics as well as empirical
economists at policy institutions (eg, central banks) but the organizers
also encourage applications from people in all stages of their career and
from fields other than economics that apply advanced econometrics.

Dear all,
Due to recent events, I would like to forward the appeal launched by Susanne Hochreiter, Gundula Ludwig and Birgit Sauer, and sorry for crosssposting:
In view of the ongoing government negotiations with the FPÖ, we would like to make an urgent request to all those working in science in Austria:
Please support the open letter entitled “Scientists for Democracy”.
In our view, it is necessary and urgent for scientists to speak out actively and decisively against the threat to democracy. We are very grateful for your support.

Dear colleagues,
We invite applications for the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy
Summer School 2025, 'The Philosophy of Iris Murdoch'.
The details can be found below and on the summer school webpage:
https://pace.phl.univie.ac.at/the-philosophy-of-iris-murdoch/.
Instructors: Justin Broackes (Brown), Cathy Mason (CEU), Silvia Panizza
(UCD/UPSE), Rachael Wiseman (Liverpool)

Dear all,
we warmly invite you to the next APSE (Applied Philosophy of Science and
Epistemology) lecture and to the accompanying Reading Cycle. The talk
will be held by Igor Grabovac (MedUni Wien).
Title: From Pandoras Box to Pandoras Hope: Opening the Lid on
Transdisciplinary Work in Public Health
Date: Thursday, January 30th 2025
Reading Circle: 1pm - 3pm
Talk: 3pm - 5 pm
Location: Room 3A, NIG
Abstract of the talk (3-5 PM):
Climate change, armed conflicts, rising inequities, pandemics, and the
displacement of large population groups constitute some of the most
pressing current concerns for the discipline of Public Health. These
complex issues require intersectional analyses and solutions--and a turn
to transdisciplinary research. This need is commonly voiced in Public
Health literature and increasingly enacted through funding calls and
commissions. In this talk, I want to show how the over-reliance on
biomedical knowledge and its accompanying reductionism has left Public
Health not only "de-socialized," but current attempts to "add in" social
science knowledge--as one pathway for transdisciplinarity--often fall
short of the promise to transcend disciplinary boundaries and create
more suitable types of knowledge. Starting with the work of John Ryle,
Julius Tandler, and Andrija Stampar, I will provide a short overview of
the historical development of Public Health and its separation from the
field of Social Medicine. Using the examples of Michael Marmot and
Camara Phyllis Jones on the "Social Determinants of Health," I will then
present the changes in the field in its move towards structural
explanations of health inequalities. Finally, I end on the work of Emily
Yates-Doerr and her critique of the pervasive "determinants model,"
showcasing the potential, affordances, and demands of true
transdisciplinarity in Public Health today.
Reading Circle (1-3 PM):
We will focus our discussion on a text by Paul Farmer (attached pdf):
Farmer, P. (1996) 'On Suffering and Structural Violence: A View from
Below', Daedalus (Cambridge, Mass.), 125(1), pp. 261-283.

Dear all,
we warmly invite you to the next APSE (Applied Philosophy of Science and
Epistemology) lecture and to the accompanying Reading Cycle. The talk
will be held by Stephan Hartmann (LMU Munich).
Title: Coherence and Truth
Date: Thursday, January 23rd 2025
Reading Circle: 1pm - 3pm
Talk: 3pm - 5 pm
Location: this APSE event will exceptionally NOT take place in room 3A
but in the "Konferenzzimmer" of the Department of Political Science
(Institut für Politikwissenschaften). This room is located in the NIG,
2nd floor, in hallway A (the one at staircase 1). You can find the room
on the floorplan here: Orientierung [1]
Abstract of the talk (3-5 PM):
One of the most important questions in epistemology is what our
knowledge of the world is ultimately based on. In this context, some
epistemologists argue that there are fundamental beliefs that do not
themselves require justification and on which all other beliefs depend.
Coherence theorists reject this answer and argue instead that our
knowledge is based on the mutual support of the propositions under
consideration: If our beliefs add up to a coherent whole, then we have a
reason for them to be true. It has also been argued that much of
scientific reasoning relies on coherence considerations. In this talk,
we will first outline the coherence theory of justification and discuss
some of the reasons for and against it. In doing so, we will also
address the central question of what coherence actually is. For this
purpose, a Bayesian framework proves particularly useful, as coherence
considerations are most effective in the domain of uncertainty. We will
then take a closer look at the relationship between coherence and truth.
To what extent is the coherence of a set of propositions an indicator of
its truth? Answering this question leads to some old and new challenges
for the coherence theorist. The talk concludes with a moderately
optimistic assessment of the role of coherence considerations in
everyday life and in science.
Reading Circle (1-3 PM):
We will focus our discussion on Chapter 2 of Stephan Hartmann's book:
Bovens, Luc, and Stephan Hartmann, '2 Coherence', Bayesian Epistemology
(Oxford, 2004; online edn, Oxford Academic, 20 Jan. 2005),

Dear all,
our next speaker in the Philosophy of Science Colloquium organized by
the Institute Vienna Circle is Caterina del Sorda (IVC Fellow), who will
give a talk on January 16, 4.45-6.15 pm.
All are welcome!

QUASI-ANALYSIS VS. EXPLICATION. THE EARLY CARNAP ON CONCEPTUAL
ENGINEERING
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium
with talks by our present fellows. Date:16/01/2025
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS
2G
Abstract:
This paper calls into question the thesis that early Carnap's rational
reconstruction arises as a proto-version of his later and more mature
idea of explication. The aim of the paper is to show that (1) according
to the criteria of similarity, exactness, and fruitfulness, rational
reconstruction qualifies as an explication, and that (2) according to
their explanatory preconditions, rational reconstruction and explication
emerge as processes of conceptual generalization and specification,
respectively. To support (1), I consider rational reconstruction, in
terms of early Carnap's quasi-analysis, as a representational theory of
mathematical structures; to support (2), I rely on formal concept
analysis as a common framework for comparing conceptual constructions.

Abstract:

Supply and Demand Curves. Philosophy of Science 85, no. 2 (2018): 271-292;

Dear all,
I warmly invite you to an upcoming APSE event on refusal. It consists of
a talk by Laura Caponetto (Milan) entitled "Refusing - and Refusing to
Obey" and an accompanying reading circle prior to the talk.
Date: Thursday, January 16th
Reading Circle: 1pm - 3pm
Talk: 3pm - 5 pm
Location: room 3A (NIG)
After the talk, we will go out for dinner. Please write to
veronika.lassl(a)univie.ac.at if you would like to join.
Everyone is welcome to attend parts or all of this event!
Abstract:
We can do several different things with the word ‘No’. We can turn down
an offer, decline an invitation, deny permission. We can engage in civil
disobedience. In this talk, I aim to map these varieties and unpack the
normative profile of refusal. I argue that refusal constitutes an
illocutionary family comprising acts which have different felicity
conditions but share the definitional normative function of preventing
certain obligations from being created or waived. I begin by singling
out what I take to be the paradigmatic case of refusal. I then broaden
the picture a little, to consider speech acts that share ‘family
resemblances’ with this paradigmatic case. And then I broaden it
further, to look at speech acts that populate the ‘illocutionary
neighborhood’, including ‘refusal to obey’.
The talk expands upon my previous work on the topic (Caponetto 2023).
While that work was primarily concerned with ‘upstream norms’ for
refusing (i.e. the conditions under which refusal succeeds), I here
focus on its ‘downstream norms’ – on the changes refusal effects on
the normative landscape.
Reading Circle:
We will discuss Caponetto's 2023 paper "The pragmatic structure of
refusal" (attached as a PDF), which is closely related to the topic of
the talk. Please feel free to bring your lunch! The reading circle is
open to everyone - please send a message to vinzenz.fischer(a)univie.ac.at
if you want to attend.

Einladung zur Buchpräsentation
Demokratisierung des Wissens: Von der Wiener Methode der Bildstatistik zu
Isotype
Buchpräsentation und Diskussion mit Günther Sandner
International System Of TYpographic Picture Education.

Policy bias in economic research and the epistemological problems of
econometrics: Lessons for designing economic policy processes
SUERF BAFFI Bocconi webinar
Tuesday, January 14, 2025
Online, Webex, 3-4.30 pm
A recent paper finds considerable policy bias in economic research. Jelveh,
Kogut and Naidu (2024) show that partisanship is detectable across fields
and within fields, even across those estimating the same theoretical
parameter. This poses serious challenges to economic policy development.
Models and their econometric estimation play an increasingly important role
in modern economic and political life. From macroeconomic policy and
financial regulation to public health and climate policy, models contribute
to shaping policies. The generation of ever more data is likely to support
the proliferation of models and econometrics. Yet, research resources in
academia focus on the theoretical foundations of the underlying model and on
the statistical methods of econometrics; much less attention is devoted to
the epistemological challenges of the underlying concepts, the normative
challenges of the everyday work with models and econometrics as well as the
inevitable role of expert judgement. Yet, understanding these challenges
would be crucial to design policy processes that effectively address
potential policy biases on economic policy development and ensure the
integrity of that process. This SUERF panel discussion discusses how serious
the policy bias in economic research is and how it affects policy
development. Furthermore, panellists will explain how that policy bias is
possible even when rigorous mathematical /statistical methods are employed.
Finally, the panel suggests design features of economic policy development
processes that improve its integrity in the face of the policy bias in
economic research.

»We are interested in exploring the historical contexts that enabled the thinking of these pathbreaking feminist scholars at the time. We also want to find out how conversations with other feminists as well as collective strands of thinking and debating shaped the emergence of their work. In these conversations, we trace back the genealogies of thoughts and concepts that they helped to bring forth and map future paths of feminist thinking, including such that address current controversies and burning questions. The conversations bring forth exigent questions around power, inequality and violence, they tackle the relation of sex, gender and sexuality as well as the relation of sex, body and materiality. We discuss the contributions of feminism into analyzing and challenging significant differences other than gender – such as race, class, nationality, religion, and caste and the way they are entangled with each other.«

Vordenker vorbei. Bisher existiert aber keine zusammenhängende
wissenschaftliche Erforschung seines Lebens und Werkes. Diese Lücke will
Jahre reicht.

Liebe Kollegin, lieber Kollege!
Datum: 4. Dezember 2024
Uhrzeit: 10:00–17:30 Uhr
Ort: Stallet, Frescati backe 19 F, Stockholm, Raum 220
Programm:
* 10:00–10:30 Einführung: Anja Kraus
* 10:30–12:00 Mensch/Mensch: Präsentation von Marie von Heyl (Künstlerin und Philosophin)
* 13:00–15:00 Mensch/Tier: Präsentation von Bror Ida Lennartsson (Künstler) [Hybridformat]
* 15:30–17:00 Mensch/Ding: Präsentation von Aloisia Moser (Philosophin)
* 17:00–17:30 Offene Diskussion
Aloisia Moser

by Initiative to Support Women in Academic Philosophy
Dear all,
we want to invite you to come have a Punsch or Glühwein (mulled wine)
together at the Christmas Market at Altes AKH! The goal is to update
each other on what we have been up to, and to make some new plans for
providing support to underrepresented groups in philosophy.
Bring your best ideas, your warmest socks and maybe an extra pair of
tights - it's supposed to be fairly cold that day!
UPSalon are a group of BA, MA, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers;
the initiative aims at creating a space and community in Vienna where
underrepresented philosophers – such as women, trans*, inter and
non-binary persons, BIPoC, socioeconomically disadvantaged people, queer
people, and people with disabilities – can connect on a regular basis.
For more information, check out our website: upsalon.univie.ac.at
People from all stages in their philosophical studies are welcome, and
we are especially excited to meet new people!
We will meet on Tuesday, 3rd of December, at 18:30 in front of NIG and
then walk to the Christmas Market together.
We are very much looking forward to meeting all of you, and to reconnect
with those who already joined for the last regular's table :)
Do not hesitate to get in touch with any questions you may have.
Best regards,
UPsalon

Dear all,
Diversifying syllabi is a growing demand in academic philosophy.
As a department, I am sure many have individual experiences and
expertise in including the voices of women, gender-non-conforming,
BiPOCs, and dis/abled philosophers in their teaching. This workshop aims
at "collectivizing" these experiences and to provide knowledge & tools
for those who aim at diversifying their syllabi for the SS25.
When: 11.12.2024 10:00-13:00
Where: HS3A
The workshop will build on sharing experiences, ressources and "how to"s
but also sets aside enough time for participants to work on their
syllabi:
10:00 - 11:00 Introduction, Sharing Sources, Strategies and Experiences
11:00 - 12:30 Workshopping - Time to work on individual Syllabi for SS25
12:30 - 13:00 Closing Reflections, Feedback, Input

The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium

ABSTRACT:
Feyerabend became familiar with the Vienna Circle tradition and Logical
Empiricism in his formative years in post-war Vienna. However, since his
early intellectual trajectory, he made LE one of his favorite critical
targets, articulating his criticism in personal dialogue with some of
its most distinguished representatives. This paper focuses on the second
stage of Feyerabend's sustained assault against LE, examining both
Feyerabend's reception of LE and Hempel's response to Feyerabend's
challenge.
In a series of papers published between 1962 and 1966, Feyerabend
relentlessly questioned the descriptive adequacy and the normative
desirability of the 'orthodox', logical empiricist, accounts of
reduction and explanation advanced by Hempel and Nagel. Feyerabend's
persistent criticism shook North American philosophy of science and
prompted Hempel's reaction, which appeared in print in the second half
of the 1960s. Initially, Hempel retorted that Feyerabend's
methodological analysis was 'completely mistaken' and Feyerabend could
offer 'no support' for his allegations. This raises interesting
historiographical questions about the later reception of LE as it seems
that Feyerabend, driven by his anti-authoritarian stance, substantially
misinterpreted the logical empiricist research programme, his vantage
point notwithstanding. On the other hand, Hempel also recognised that
the descriptive issues on which Feyerabend insisted, despite having been
long acknowledged by LE, could have more far-reaching consequences than
previously envisaged. In fact, by the end of the 1960s, Hempel came to
make quite radical concessions, admitting that the standard logical
empiricist model for explicating the structure of scientific theories
was essentially 'misleading', that the logical empiricist account of
reduction was 'an untenable oversimplification', and that the logical
empiricist approach as to the meaning of scientific terms was actually
'misconceived'. In this respect, there are good reasons to consider the
decline of the logical empiricist research programme in the 1970s at
least partly as the result of Feyerabend's stimulating, however
misrepresenting, insights.

Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Georg Schiemer
On two types of instrumental devices
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 14/11/2024
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 2G
Abstract:
Instrumental devices are linguistic expressions that are formal or non-representational but nevertheless indispensable or at least instrumentally useful for certain theoretical purposes. We give a systematic study of such expressions and their roles in theorizing, thus offering a unified treatment of instrumental devices across different philosophical areas. Specifically, we present an explication of two general types of such devices, namely merely expressive devices and merely inferential devices and discuss their respective theoretical roles based on a number of philosophical examples. Joint work with Hannes Leitgeb (LMU Munich).
Supply and Demand Curves. Philosophy of Science 85, no. 2 (2018): 271-292;

Dear all,
you are cordially invited to a talk in the series "work-in-progress" (WiP)
of the research group on Didactics of Philosophy/Ethics:
Hana Jermakova, University of Hradec Králové, Czech Republik, will talk
about her research project on:
The Concept of Intellectual Autonomy in Education (abstract below).
The talk will take place next Monday (11.11.2024)
at NIG, Hörsaal 3F, 4:45-6:15 pm.
Everybody is very welcome!
Best,
Donata (Romizi)
PS: Sorry for crossposting.
---------------------------
Abstract:
In this talk, I will deal with the concept of philosophizing (philosophical
thinking as it is used in czech didactics of philosophy) in education, but
using a framework rooted in virtue epistemology. Rather than contrasting it
with comeptency-based model (dominant in czech educational system), I try to
add a dimension by emphasizing the question of who is a good
thinker/knower?
I stress the obvious advantages of the intellectual virtues approach (social
and contextual character of virtues, motivational aspect the role of
epistemic emotions, and also the intuitive language of this framework). By
combining a didactical/normative perspective on thinking and the
epistemological focus on intellectual character, I aim to bring a new
perspective for teachers and learners in the czech educational context.

Dear colleagues,

Cordially invitation to the roundtable "Gendered Culture Wars? Reading the US Elections from an Intersectional Lens".
When? 8. November 2024, 17:00
Where? Universität Wien, Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistk, Spitalgasse 2 Hof 8, Helene-Richter-Saal
Discussants: Elisabeth Holzleithner (University of Vienna, Philosophy of Law and Legal Gender Studies), Juliana Cesario Alvim Gomes (CEU Vienna / FGMG Minas Gerais, Brazil, Human Rights, Gender and Sexuality Studies), Julia Roth (University of Vienna / Anglophone Literatures and Cultures and Gender Studies)
This roundtable sheds light on the intersectionally gendered dimensions of the US election campaign and its outcome. Discussing the “right-wing patterns of en-gendering” evoked in extreme right discourse, the participants trace the ways in which “gender” serves as an arena, a sort of meta-language and “affective bridge” to catapult diverse topics into the public sphere. From various perspectives – bridging the USA with Europe and Brazil / Latin America as well as Cultural and Gender Studies approaches with lenses from Law and Human Rights – the participants will delineate also the complexities of masculinities, femonationalism, sexual exceptionalism (Gabriele Dietze), or reverse anti-colonialism. The panel asks what we can expect from the new US government in the years to come in light of the affective strategies that are employed in this gendered and “reloaded Culture War” (Wendy Brown) in order to create a feeling of community and a new common sense.

Moderation: Andrea Lehner-Hartmann
