Dear Colleagues,
We are happy to invite you to the next session of the Work-In-Progress
series in a week, on Thursday 2nd May. There will be two presentations,
given by Mariia Fedorova and Zachary Daus. Detailed information is
below:
When & Where: Thursday, May 2, 17:15 - 18:45, Hörsaal 3A (NIG,
Universitätsstraße 7)
1st Presentation: Speaker: Mariia Fedorova.
Title: On Virtues and Vices of Imaginative Constraints
Abstract:
Several philosophers have recently argued that imagination can be
epistemically useful when it is properly constrained by reality.
Nevertheless, the nature of the so-called imaginative constraints has
remained a contentious matter. On the one hand, it is believed that
imagination is constrained by one’s beliefs about the world which are
readily accessible to introspection and available for voluntary control.
I refer to this view as the voluntary-imaginative-constraints view
(VIC). On the other hand, given the shared cognitive architecture of
perception and imagination, imaginative constraints are stipulated to
take the form of perceptual regularities, inaccessible to consciousness
and, by extension, out of voluntary control. Call this view the
architectural-imaginative-constraints view (AIC). Prima facie, VIC and
AIC are compatible. It seems plausible to suppose that imagination can
be constrained by one’s beliefs about the world as well as by perceptual
regularities. Under closer examination, however, the advocates of VIC
and AIC appear to talk about one and the same kind of imaginative
constraints - the imaginer’s background knowledge of her environment.
The key difference between VIC and AIC lies in the relationship they
take to obtain between the imaginer and her knowledge. This puts
pressure on the apparent compatibility of VIC and AIC and challenges us
to make a choice between treating the imaginer’s knowledge as (i)
consciously accessible and controlled or as (ii) inaccessible to
consciousness and out of voluntary control. If we favour (i),
imagination’s reliability is in jeopardy. If we favour (ii), its
epistemic value is compromised. Fortunately, a dual-system model of
imagination as proposed by Michael Stuart offers a way out of this
dilemma. Instead of distinguishing different types of imaginative
constraints, we can distinguish different ways of exercising
imagination, one of which is consciously accessible and controlled,
while the other is unconscious and automatic.
2nd Presentation: Speaker: Zachary Daus.
Title: Distribution, Recognition and the Politics
of Justice in Medical AI.
Abstract:
Advocates of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine suggest that one
of its greatest benefits is its ability to resolve issues in the
distribution of scarce medical resources. While there is real potential
for medical AI to alleviate medical resource scarcity and consequently
contribute to a more just distribution of medical resources, this would
come at a cost to justice as recognition. A biased clinical decision
support system (CDSS), for example, may result in more distributively
just outcomes by expanding access to medical care, but at a cost to the
mis-recognition of minorities and women. Should such a CDSS be tolerated
for its improvement in distribution at its cost to recognition?
Similarly a black box CDSS, for example, may arrive at decisions that
are incapable of meaningful explanations despite expanding access to
medical care. Must such systems incur the cost of being engineered for
explainability in order to ensure that they do not mis-recognize humans
qua rational agents? In light of these and similar issues, I argue that
one of the predominant theories of justice that guides the distribution
of medical resources—Norman Daniels's Rawls-inspired accountability for
reasonableness (AFR)—must be either supplemented or replaced by a theory
of justice as recognition, and consider the theories of recognition
developed by Nancy Fraser and Axel Honneth as potential candidates.
There are refreshments and snacks. And all are invited to join for
dinner or drinks afterward.
Please let us know (wip.philosophie(a)univie.ac.at) if you have any

Dear all,
we cordially invite you to the upcoming talk of the APSE - lecture
series, delivered by Stephanie Ifill (University of Westminster)
Title: Knowledge as a turn towards the possibility of existence
When/Where: 12.10., 15-17pm, HS 3A
If you are interested in joining us for dinner/drinks afterwards, write
an email to Manu Sharma (manu.sharma(a)univie.ac.at)! everyone welcome!
Abstract:
"I came to realise that to produce knowledge, I must enter into a
framework where I am non-existent....I refused...There must be another
possibility, another way of knowing." This talk brings forward the
question: what is the possibility of epistemic non-existence? One of the
possibilities I raise is that of the turn. The turn is not a seek of
inclusion in; it's a turn, a break from. I turn in relation to Sylvia
Wynter (to rupture) and Henri Bergson (to indetermination) to help
articulate what I mean by epistemic turn. Upon awareness, there is the
possibility to turn from, indeed with a cost, but a possibility none the
less. This talk represents the culmination of deep thought brought out
through relational conversations and a direct lived confrontation with
epistemic non-existence; it's part of an ongoing experiment in the
possibility of appearing in Europe as a *Black woman (outside of the
cage).

Dear all,
our next speaker in the Philosophy of Science Colloquium organized by
the Institute Vienna Circle is Jesús Zamora Bonilla, who will give a
talk on April 25, 4.45-6.15 pm.
All are welcome!

PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE COLLOQUIUM TALK: JESÚS ZAMORA BONILLA
ON OBSERVATIONAL STATEMENTS AS EPISTEMIC PUBLIC GOODS: AN INFERENTIALIST
RECONSTRUCTION OF NEURATH'S PROTOKOLLSÄTZE
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium
with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 25/04/2024
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS
3F
ABSTRACT:
Philosophical discussions have tended to concentrate much more on how
observational statements are 'theory laden' than on what is what makes
them observational to begin with. After discrediting the notion of a
'purely observational language' or the existence of 'pure sense data',
consensus has apparently been that it is a concern for the practicing
scientists themselves to determine by acquaintance or familiarity what
counts in each case as an 'observation', without the possibility of
having something like a 'general philosophical theory of scientific
observation'. Without denying the role of contextual and tacit knowledge
in the process of determining what can be taken as an observational
statement, this talk tries to recover Otto Neurath's idea of
Protokolsätze by immersing it in an inferentialist account of scientific
activity (or 'science as a game of persuasion') and by employing some
concepts derived from economics and game theory, in particular Milgrom's
notion of 'public events' as a possible solution of the problem of
common knowledge in games of coordination. Further consequences are
derived in regard of the relation between private and public knowledge,
and about the revisability of observational information.
Dear all,
this is just a reminder that tomorrow is UVienna's Work-In-Progress Series with Jesús Zamora Bonilla (Visiting Scholar from UNED).
When? Thursday, April 18, 17:00 - 18:30
Where? Hörsaal 3A (NIG, Universitätsstraße 7)
Title: "Reflections on the ontology of social problems"
Abstract:
The aim of this talk is to explore the entangledness of social problems with both the positive and normative aspects of social reality and social ideas, and connect it with a variety of debates within the social ontology literature. Despite the broad scope of this field, 'social problems' are conspicuously missing as an independent category. This omission is intriguing since many of the listed topics (like Group Agency, Organizations, Money, Race, Gender, and Disability, etc.) are inherently linked to various kinds of social problems. This dearth of attention to social problems is also reflected in academic databases like The Philosopher's Index, which yield zero results when searching for "ontology" and "social problem" together. The neglect of social problems within the academic field of social ontology is not due to a lack of significance attached to them by social scientists themselves: disciplines like economics and sociology recognize the centrality of social problems and have dedicated a lot of work to their study. Some arguments in favour of the centrality of social problems are the following: first, in many philosophical theories, from pragmatism to existentialism, ‘reality’ is not merely a question of, say, ‘brute existence’, but something that emerges in front of humans as a kind of resistance (or, as Heidegger would have put it, as a kind of Unzuhandenheit). In this sense, problems would probably be the ‘most real’ things for humans (and perhaps for living beings in general), and social problems would count amongst the ‘hardest’ social facts we can encounter as inhabitants of the social world. Second, something similar happens at the level of the social sciences, whose main direct motivation is very likely the attempt of understanding the social world in order to help to solve some of the problems that afflict the members of the societies to which social scientists themselves belong. These arguments point to the conclusion that the most reasonable approaches to the ontology of social problems will have to pay considerable attention to items and ideas coming from phenomenology.
Everyone is most cordially invited to join us for dinner or drinks afterward. If possible, please let us know in advance by email.

Dear all,
I am happy to invite you all to the next APSE (Applied Philosophy of

Where: ONLINE -> Zoom Link:

We are excited to welcome as our next speaker Dr. Paul Giladi, Lecturer
in Philosophy at the School of History, Religions, and Philosophies,
SOAS University of London.
He will give a talk titled "Putnam on ‘The Last Dogma of Empiricism’:
From Auto da Fé to Epistemic Disobedience?"
Here is the abstract:
In this chapter, I argue that the principal philosophic depth of Hilary
Putnam’s dissolution of the fact/value dichotomy (FVD) is neither
sourced in his argument that theory selection always presupposes values,
nor in his argument that there is entanglement of fact and value in our
use of thick ethical concepts. Rather, the principal philosophic depth
mainly resides in Putnam’s charge that mainstream analytic philosophical
circles often fetishize (scientific) naturalism. Putnam’s
anti-scientism, more so than either of his entanglement theses, provides
his readers with reason to regard FVD as a type of ideology. Because of
its status as an ideology, and as therefore in the business of hegemonic
sense-making, FVD is made sense of as a real threat to inquiry, insofar
as FVD renders inquiry undemocratic by valorizing simplicity over
complexity, cleanliness over messiness, dry deserts over lush
landscapes. Putnam’s own ‘post-analytic’ pragmatist position never
ostensibly espoused any
critical theoretic attitude toward modernity – let alone formulated
Ideologiekritik. Nevertheless, I think his 21st-century articulations of
his conceptual pluralism may be said to display more resonance with the
decolonial concept of epistemic disobedience than with a ‘post-analytic’
tradition Putnam himself explicitly endorsed in
his final decade: liberal naturalism. I conclude that even though
Putnam’s anti-scientistic defence of mathematically recalcitrant
phenomena may be more radical than liberal naturalist defences of such
phenomena, Putnam should be viewed as ultimately more epistemically
mischievous than epistemically disobedient.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the talk!

Überreichung der Preisurkunde von Wolfgang Beck
Dankesrede von Guillaume Paoli
Lesung von Michael Maertens aus Texten von Günther Anders
Anschließend Gespräch zwischen dem Preisträger, Karin Harrasser und
Stephan Lessenich
Kleiner Empfang

Dear Colleagues in the Philosophy Department,
*Guest Lecture, Lona Gaikis, 'Art as a Life Form: Thinking with Susanne
K. Langer: 18:00, 11 April, Musicology Dept., HS 1*
I'm delighted to invite you to a guest lecture by Lona Gaikis, who will
be introducing us the thought of German-American philosopher Susanne
Langer. Langer's philosophy of music has long been neglected by the
musicological establishment, but fortunately that is changing, as
evidenced by the recently published /Bloomsbury Handbook of Susanne K.
Langer/ (2024), edited by Ms Gaikis.
As well as lecturing at various universities in Austria, Ms Gaikis also
runs the sonic and music experimental platform czirp czirp, which hosts
works by various international sonic media artists. In her talk she will
also be discussing how Langer's thought can help us to understand some
of this avant garde work.

Liebe Kolleg:innen,
morgen (Donnerstag, 21.03.) wird es wieder 'cinesophisch'!
Nachdem wir uns letzte Woche anlässlich seines 100. Todesjahres schon
Adaptionen von Straub/Huillet (u.a. "Klassenverhältnisse", "Schakale und
Araber"). Von den schwindelerregenden Bürokratieungetümern bei Terry
Gilliam ("Brazil") bis zu den gruseligen Metamorphosen bei D. Lynch
("Eraserhead) oder D. Cronenberg ("The Fly", "Videodrome") zieht sich
eine Spur des Kafkaesken durch das filmische Imaginäre des 20.
Jahrhunderts.
In gewohnter Manier stellen wir eine kleine Liste zur Auswahl und
entscheiden uns gemeinsam für einen Film:
Orson Welles - Der Prozess (1962)
David Lynch - Eraserhead (1977)
Jim Jarmusch - Dead Man (1995)
Darren Aronofsky - Pi (1998)
Wir freuen uns auf Euch!

Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Adrien Champougny
Reverse Mathematics: Why Should the Philosopher Care About It?
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 04/04/2024
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3F
Abstract:
Reverse mathematics is a sub-field of mathematical logic. It is used to, a certain theorem t being given, be able to identify exactly what is needed to prove t. The goal of this talk is to provide a brief introduction to reverse mathematics and to give a few insights on why it is an interesting subject from a philosophical point of view.
I will show how the founding fathers of reverse mathematics (that is Harvey Friedeman and Steven Simpson) offered a first philosophical reading of their work that was mainly ontological in character: according to their view, the goal of reverse mathematics is to identify “[…] which set existence axioms are needed to prove the known theorems of mathematics” [Simpson,2009].
I will then present another way to see the philosophical interest of reverse mathematics that is more focused on the epistemological side. This reading rests on a simple idea: all other things being equal, one has a deeper epistemological control over a constructive proof than over an unconstructive one (I will try to make this concept precise in the course of the presentation). According to this reading, reverse mathematics can be seen as a way to evaluate what kind of knowledge we can hope to acquire concerning a particular mathematical theorem.
Finally, assuming that time permits, I will close my presentation by mentioning a new field of research started by Benedict Eastaugh and Walter Dean: reverse philosophy. The idea in this field is to find an argument in philosophy that somehow rests on a mathematical theorem and to show that this mathematical theorem necessitates some non-trivial mathematical resources to be proven.
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Workshop on Truth, Definability and Quantification into Sentence
Position
27 and 28 September 2024, University of Vienna
Jointly organised by Max Kölbel, Julio de Rizzo and Benjamin Schnieder
--------
Can truth be defined? Frege argued that it couldn't. Ramsey argued that
defining it would be easy if only we had an analysis of judgement. Today
Horwich claims that truth cannot be defined explicitly because doing so
would require quantification into sentence position and such
quantification is not coherent. Instead he proposes a "minimal theory"
of truth, which comprises all the unproblematic instances of the
equivalence schema. Künne, by contrast, argues that quantification into
sentence position is coherent and may actually be part of some natural
languages. Künne uses such quantification to define truth explicitly:
∀x (x is true iff ∃p ((x is the proposition that p) & p)). Or in
English: a representation (belief, assertion etc) is true just if things
are as it represents them as being. Künne claims also to find this
definition in Frank Ramsey's posthumous work, which, as an exegetical
claim, is not uncontroversial.
Is truth definable? Is propositional quantification coherent? Do natural
languages involve propositional quantification, and in what sense? What
do the answers to these questions mean for philosophical attempts to
define or explain truth? Is truth redundant if explicitly definable? Not
redundant if not explicitly definable? We are interested in these and
related questions (broadly conceived).

Confirmed speakers are:
Peter Fritz (Australian Catholic University)
Paul Horwich (New York University)
Wolfgang Künne (University of Hamburg)
Poppy Mankowitz (University of Bristol)
Cheryl Misak (University of Toronto)

Dear colleagues,
The History of Philosophy Forum at the University of Notre Dame (USA) is
hosting its annual Spring Colloquium on April 4-5, 2024. Registration is
open to attend the colloquium online or in person on Notre Dame's campus
(registration link: https://forms.gle/Pz9PQG8sjxfYRn276).
This year's theme is *"The Life of the Mind in the History of
Philosophy."* Colloquium participants consider the following issues as
they have appeared across the history of philosophy:
Could we understand thinking as an activity of life, rather than as
an abstract logical operation? How could we make sense of the
(human) mind as something living, or as fundamentally instantiated
by living beings? How can we model the characteristic dynamics of
mental development, self-formation, and personal growth? Is the life
of the mind as real as or even more real than the life of organisms?
This colloquium draws together various models of the ‘life of the
mind’ from across the history of philosophy.
The following scholars are scheduled to present:
* Anne Clausen, University of Göttingen
* Alix Cohen, University of Notre Dame
* Gerad Gentry, Johannes-Gutenberg University Mainz
* Peter John Hartman, Loyola University Chicago
* Julia Jorati, University of Massachusetts Amherst
* Jari Kaukua, University of Jyväskylä
* Katharina Kraus, Johns Hopkins University
* Hannah Laurens, University of Oxford
* Scott MacDonald, Cornell University
* Wiebke Marie Stock, University of Notre Dame
* Mark Textor, King’s College London

Dear all,
this is a reminder to come to the next talk organized by APSE – Applied
Philosophy of Science and Epistemology. Mirjam Faissner (Charité -
Universitätsmedizin Berlin) will give a talk titled "Epistemic
Oppression and Trans Healthcare". We are very excited about her talk!
Where and When: 21.3.2024, 15:00, HS 3A (NIG).
Abstract:
To understand and communicate our social experiences, we rely on
epistemic resources, such as words, concepts, metaphors, or social
meanings. Yet, which epistemic resources are socially available depends
on power structures. The concept of epistemic oppression, as developed
by Kristie Dotson, is helpful in understanding how power structures
enable and constrain epistemic agency, i. e. our ability to use, develop
and adapt our shared epistemic resources.
In this talk, I argue that institutional epistemologies in healthcare
sustain the epistemic oppression of trans people. More specifically, I
suggest that dominant narratives on transition and detransition
available in healthcare result in hermeneutical injustice and
smothering, two types of epistemic injustice that uphold epistemic
oppression. I discuss consequences of the epistemic oppression of trans
people for trans healthcare.
Bio:
Mirjam Faissner is a medical ethicist working at the Institute of the
History of Medicine and Ethics in Medicine at Charité -
Universitätsmedizin Berlin. Trained as a medical doctor and a
philosopher, she works on questions of structural and epistemic
injustice in healthcare, combining philosophical and empirical research.
Looking forward to seeing you at the talk! Please also let me know if
you would like to join for dinner afterwards :)

*WIP Series 21.03.2024 - Thursday, HS 3A, NiG - "Katharsis: On the
Platonic Adaptation of an Orphic Idea" by Hermann Crüwell*
Dear all,
This is an email to inform you that the next presentation in the
Work-In-Progress series will be given by Hermann Crüwell (Ernst-Mach
Postdoc, University of Vienna; Ph.D., University of Oxford)) this coming
Thursday. The presentation is entitled "Katharsis: On the Platonic
Adaptation of an Orphic Idea"
Abstract:
At the time when Plato wrote his dialogues, many people sought meaning
and salvation in Orphic mystery cults. In short, Orphism taught that the
soul was once in a state of primordial blessedness in the company of the
gods. Because of an original sin, it fell away from this state and is
now trapped in circles of reincarnation in human bodies. Only initiation
into the Orphic mysteries and purification from its current impure
condition can help the practitioner to be released from this circle,
restore itself in its original condition and attain eternal bliss in the
company of the gods once again.
Plato was critical of these cults, which often demanded fees in exchange
for salvation by purifying rituals and initiation into the mysteries
(cf. Republic 364b–c). At the same time, he took on central concepts and
narratives from the Orphics to give expression to his own philosophical
outlook on the soul, its fate, and its quest for self-perfection.
Focusing on the Phaedo and its concept of katharsis (purification), I
explore how Plato transforms an Orphic idea to conceptualize the soul's
cognitive progress towards wisdom and virtue of character by means of
philosophy.
The meeting will take place in lecture hall 3A (NIG, Universitätsstraße
7, 3rd floor) at 17:15 and will last up to 18:45. All are invited to
join us for dinner or drinks afterward. If possible, please let us know

Esteemed Colleagues,
We would like to invite you to participate in our conference focusing on
the relationship between identity and virtue in the context of human-AI
interaction which will take place on the 30^th and 31^st of May this
year in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The conference theme encompasses three main
areas of inquiry:
1.
The interplay between identity and virtue(s) in human behavior.
2.
The significance of virtues in shaping human-AI interactions, online
environments and their consequences for identity.
3.
Exploring the plausibility of attributing virtue and identity to
AI-based systems or AI-powered robots.
Our aim will be to elucidate how epistemic identity, encompassing
fundamental beliefs, cognitive processes, and epistemic standards,
intertwines with virtuousness, religious belief(s) and associated
virtues such as humility, largely in connection with newly developed AI
tools. In this we will be examining the connections between virtue
epistemology, AI ethics, and religious studies. Papers are also invited
to explore topics such as the evolution of human epistemic identities in
the context of AI interactions, the possibility of communication and
evolution of religious beliefs within human-AI interactions, the
discernibility of epistemic identity in AI systems and its implications,
and the attribution of virtues or vices to AI entities and their
potential impact on epistemic harm or injustice.
We welcome submissions from diverse fields, including philosophy,
bioethics, theology, computer science, law, and educational sciences.
The conference aims to facilitate interdisciplinary discussions and
welcomes contributions that cut across disciplinary boundaries.
We will be accepting submissions at this email address
(info(a)identity.ethics-ai.eu) until the 29^th of March. Please find
attached more detailed information regarding submission guidelines and
deadlines.
We invite you to participate in this exploration of identity, virtue,
and the evolving dynamics of human-AI interaction. Your contributions
are integral to advancing our understanding of these complex themes.

PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE COLLOQUIUM TALK: MARTA SZNAJDER
Janina Hosiasson-Lindenbaum's Early Works: Between Warsaw and Cambridge
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium
with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 21/03/2024
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS
3F
ABSTRACT:
In 1931, Janina Hosiasson-Lindenbaum proposed a proto-decision-theoretic
answer to the value of evidence problem, originally posed by C. D. Broad
and solved by I. J. Good in the context of Savage's decision theory. As
an influence on her paper she credited Frank Ramsey, whose then
unpublished "Truth and Probability" (Ramsey 1926) she had read shortly
after Ramsey's death in 1930. But Hosiasson also insisted that she had
"previously thought independently on similar lines" (Hosiasson 1931, ft.
15).
This raises two questions. First, what is it exactly that
Hosiasson-Lindenbaum took herself to be in agreement on with Ramsey, or
what part of her approach has been inspired by his paper? And second:
what _did_ she "previously [think] independently"? In the paper, I
answer the two questions, drawing on Hosiasson-Lindenbaum's work
published before her contact with Ramsey's work, as well as shortly
after (and which has not received any attention to date).
I propose a more minimal answer to the first of the above questions,
arguing that we should not read Hosiasson as taking up Ramsey's theory
of epistemic probability wholesale. While Hosiasson did use the concept
of "mathematical expectation", or expected utility, as a model for how
people use probability to inform some of their decisions, she does not
connect this to any general view on what probabilities are overall.
This reading is then supported by a detailed analysis of Hosiasson's
early works. While Hosiasson's (probably) first philosophical work--her
doctoral dissertation from 1926--had been lost, fragments of it were
published in two papers (Hosiasson 1928, 1934). The second of those
papers was published with a large delay and contains a lot of material
that was added after 1931/2. This makes it particularly interesting in
the context of this study, since those dates are precisely the cut-off
point for Hosiasson's contact with Ramsey's work.

Dear colleagues,
We cordially invite you to our SOCRATES Workshop on "Practices of

Practices of storytelling are vital to the creation and transformation
of Indigenous concepts and ideas, and vital to understanding and
enabling Indigenous forms of philosophical inquiry. Oral narratives,
weaving, carving, and other artforms such as, for instance,
architecture, song, and dance both contain and enable philosophical
inquiry. What is more, creative artforms remain sites of struggle,
resistance, and reclaiming of Indigenous philosophies for many
Indigenous communities around the world – holding space for traditional
and contemporary ideas to be reimagined and renewed.
In this workshop, we explore the role of storytelling (broadly
understood) in Indigenous knowledge. We also ask what the academic
discipline of philosophy (and the philosophers therein) might gain from
better understanding these practices. To that end, we ask questions such
as: What is the function of storytelling in Indigenous knowledge? Do
practices of storytelling necessarily clash with other (more dominant)
knowledge practices? What would it take to reconcile the deep
differences between them fairly? What would it take for the academic
discipline to include (and enable) diverse methods of inquiry (such as
storytelling)? What limits, if any, are there to how non-indigenous
philosophers use Indigenous knowledge-making practices such as stories
in their work? And, what ethical and trust-based issues arise at the
intersections of Indigenous storytelling and mainstream scientific practice?
The workshop includes talks by invited speakers Inkeri Koskinen
(University of Helsinki), Yolanda Lopez-Maldonado (Indigenous Science),
David Ludwig (Wageningen University), Adriana Moreno Cely (Vrije
Universiteit Brussel), and Krushil Watene (University of Auckland).
There is no participation fee.

Dear all,
We cordially invite you to join two talks on moral philosophy by
scholars from The Centre for Ethics at University of Pardubice.
1) Silvia Caprioglio Panizza (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow): What's
Your Moral Impossibility?
Abstract:
Our moral agency is typically defined by what we do, what we think, what
we will. I argue that equally important is the ‘dark’ side of choice,
thought, and imagination – specifically, what we do not take as a
possibility. I call this domain ‘moral impossibility’. In this talk I
show how moral impossibility (often silently) delimits and defines our
option ranges, our moral character, and our sense of value. Putting
these three consequences together, I suggest an application of moral
impossibility to the explanation of deep disagreement, understood as
situations when one party demands what is not just wrong, but morally
impossible (here in the form of ‘unthinkability’) for the other, and
vice versa. If we interpret deep disagreement this way, what changes?
2) Niklas Forsberg (Head of Research): Our(?) Concept of Food
Abstract:
One of the more difficult sentences of Cora Diamond’s seminal paper
“Eating Meat, Eating People” is: “it is not 'morally wrong' to eat our
pets; people who ate their pets would not have pets in the same sense of
that term.” There are a number in ways in which this phrase may seem
challenging. One is that it ties the sense of moral value to our
concepts. If people ate their pets they would have a different concept
of “pet,” and because of that conceptual difference, we would not be
able to simply state that they are morally wrong. This marks out
conceptual differences as playing a pivotal role in marking out moral
differences. Deep moral disagreements are often rooted in conceptual
divergencies. It may, however, now look like morality itself is losing
its foundation. Change your concepts, and you get a new morality!
In my talk, I will try to show why that is a distorted understanding of
the kind of point that Diamond is making. So, I will try to show why it
may actually be helpful to think about moral differences as conceptual
differences. In order to see why the way of thinking that Diamond here
illustrates is not a flat-out relativistic doctrine, one needs to, as
Iris Murdoch (one of Diamond’s sources of philosophical inspiration)
revise our concept of a concept, and perhaps also our conception of what
it means to have a moral belief. There is, though, no simple route (that
I can find) to clarity about these matters, so the first part of the
talk will include placing a number of philosophical views and problems
on the table (about moral beliefs and argumentation, human agency and
responsibility, and features of the asymmetry that can be discerned
between views that are reached by means of directed reasoning and views
that are “merely” inherited.
Snacks and drinks will be provided!
Both talks will be in English.

Dear all,
This is an email to remind you that the next presentation in the
Work-In-Progress series will be given by Hermann Crüwell (Ernst-Mach
If possible, please let us know
in advance by email.
You can write to wip.philosophie(a)univie.ac.at if you have any questions
or would like to present for the Work-in-Progress series. Calendar and
event information can be found at:

Best wishes and we hope to see many of you there!

Sehr geehrte Kolleg:innen,

Dear all,
it is my pleasure to invite you to the next talk organized by APSE –
Applied Philosophy of Science and Epistemology. Mirjam Faissner (Charité
- Universitätsmedizin Berlin) will give a talk titled "Epistemic
Oppression and Trans Healthcare".
All the best,

--------
Confirmed speakers are:
Peter Fritz (Australian Catholic University)
Paul Horwich (New York University)
Wolfgang Künne (University of Hamburg)
Poppy Mankowitz (University of Bristol)
Cheryl Misak (University of Toronto)
--------
We invite submissions of extended abstracts (1000 words max.) for up to
3 further talks. Please send your anonymized abstracts by 22 March 2024
to truthwien(a)gmail.com. Selected speakers will be notified by mid April.
We will cover accommodation of selected speakers (and on application
offer them a travel subsidy of up to 400 Euros).
This workshop is supported by the FWF Cluster of Excellence project
"Knowledge in Crisis", the FWF project "Truth is Grounded in Facts" and
the University of Vienna.
Dear all,
our next speaker in the Philosophy of Science Colloquium organized by
the Institute Vienna Circle is IVC fellow Christian J.

PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE COLLOQUIUM TALK: CHRISTIAN J. FELDBACHER-ESCAMILLA
(IVC FELLOW)
RUDOLF CARNAP'S APPROACH TO THE PROBLEM OF INDUCTION
Philosophy of Science Colloquium
The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium
with talks by our present fellows.
Date: 14/03/2024
Time: 16h45
Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS
3F
ABSTRACT:
In Rudolf Carnap's work on inductive logic (starting with his 1950), he
challenged the traditional view that inductive methods contradict
empiricism due to their reliance on a synthetic a priori uniformity
assumption. Carnap proposed a logical alternative to frequentist
probability, advocating for a probabilistic uniformity assumption. He
aimed to categorize all probabilistic statements as analytical and part
of an inductive logic. Despite these efforts, we want to argue that
Carnap's account has gaps. It remains to be proven that from his system
a probabilistic statement about nature's uniformity can be derived.
Additionally, his approach seems to require meta-probabilistic
reasoning, which, at least at first sight, seems to face the problem of
triggering an infinite regress and leaving his account to induction
incomplete.

postkoloniale, klassistische gesellschaftliche Strukturen normalisieren

Abstract: My current research centers on the question of how to
adjudicate an appropriate background logic for axiomatizations of
mathematics. Currently, first-order logics are the default background
logic. They have the advantage of being simple yet expressive,
deductively complete, but has two main disadvantages. The first is that
it is not categorical, which means that there are infinitely many
non-isomorphic models for e.g., the natural number sequence 0, 1, 2, 3,
4, . . . -- most including strange entities like "non-standard" numbers
capable of being greater than all natural numbers, and in which addition
and multiplication aren't computable! The second disadvantage is that
making first-order logics expressive enough to axiomatize the natural
numbers renders it incomplete! In many ways, first-order logics simply
are not up to the task. Second-order logics are deductively incomplete,
but have the advantage of being categorical, which makes them far more
suitable to talk with precision about a mathematical structure. As such,
I intend to use the history of model theory as of scientific progress
and decision-making with respect to our background theories when the
advantages and disadvantages aren't themselves decisive. But first, this
history must be generated, and the early history of model theory is what
I will focus on for this talk.
All are welcome!

“Bird by bird! Writing powerful small assignments in flow” - 11.3.2024, 13:00-14:30, room 3A, NIG, Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Vienna
Anne Lamott wrote one of the most popular books about the writing process :"Bird by bird: Instructions on Writing & Life". The book is funny, heart warming and very wise. Looking at the whole process of writing a dissertation we will focus on the question how the actual writing phase can become productive and joyful through Anne Lamotts strategies "bird by bird" and "shitty first draft".
Please bring paper, pens and an open mind.
I am looking forward to meeting you and writing with you

Dear All,
our next speaker in the Philosophy of Science Colloquium organized by
the Institute Vienna Circle is IVC fellow Valérie Lynn Therrien (McGill
University), who will give a talk on February 22, 3.00-4.30pm (CEST).
Title: Towards a History of Model Theory
Abstract: My current research centers on the question of how to
adjudicate an appropriate background logic for axiomatizations of
mathematics. Currently, first-order logics are the default background
logic. They have the advantage of being simple yet expressive,
deductively complete, but has two main disadvantages. The first is that
it is not categorical, which means that there are infinitely many
non-isomorphic models for e.g., the natural number sequence 0, 1, 2, 3,
4, . . . — most including strange entities like “non-standard” numbers
capable of being greater than all natural numbers, and in which addition
and multiplication aren’t computable! The second disadvantage is that
making first-order logics expressive enough to axiomatize the natural
numbers renders it incomplete! In many ways, first-order logics simply
are not up to the task. Second-order logics are deductively incomplete,
but have the advantage of being categorical, which makes them far more
suitable to talk with precision about a mathematical structure. As such,
I intend to use the history of model theory as of scientific progress
and decision-making with respect to our background theories when the
advantages and disadvantages aren’t themselves decisive. But first, this
history must be generated, and the early history of model theory is what
I will focus on for this talk.
Venue: HS 3D, NIG, Universitätsstraße 7, 1090 Wien
All are welcome!

Why Do We Disagree About Politics?
The Role of Knowledge in Democratic Societies
Panel Discussion and Reception
21 February 2024
19:30 - 22:00
Billrothhaus | Frankgasse 8, 1090 Wien
Doors open at 19:00. Registration required.
"Democracy is a mechanism for distributing knowledge about matters of public interest, allowing us to decide which politicians should govern." This popular view paints the picture that a politician's role is to inform voters about what is in our best interest. Losing elections, then, must be the result of ineffective communication: "If only we'd managed to get our message across to people properly", the story goes, "then they would have seen why they had to vote for us!"
This picture clearly falls short of the messy reality of politics. But why? Does it portray an overly rationalistic picture of the democratic process? Is this picture overly idealistic? Does it overestimate the importance of (conveying) knowledge in democratic decisionmaking? Does it overestimate the potential for people to know what is in their best interest? How can we even determine what a person's "best interest" truly is?
Speakers:
Michael Ignatieff (Historian, former politician, Rector Emeritus at Central European University)
Oliver Traldi (Philosopher at Princeton University, author of the forthcoming book Political Beliefs)
Åsa Wikforss (Philosopher at Stockholm University, member of the Swedish Academy, Director of the Knowledge Resistance project)
The discussion will be moderated by Eva Stanzl, journalist at the Wiener Zeitung.

Dear Colleagues,
There is an open call for participants (at the master, doctoral, and
postdoctoral level) in the univie:summer school “Ways of Doing
Philosophy: East and West” that is organized by our doctoral researchers
at the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy.
Abstract:
Nowadays, the term philosophy is a common currency across cultures,
university curricula, and public discourses around the world. But what
happens when φιλοσοφία (philosophia) meets contemporary philosophy and
its non-Western counterparts such as Chinese zhexue 哲學? The term
encompasses a plethora of conceptions of philosophical practices that
vary between East and West cultures.
This edition of the Summer School will provide a platform for
participants to explore and learn from the plurality of philosophical
subjects, methods, and purposes. In addition, the Summer School will
focus on the past and present bridges between ancient and
modern/contemporary philosophy, as well as between Western and
non-Western philosophical traditions, and on the global lessons about
philosophy that can be drawn from these interactions.
The summer school will, in addition, host keynote lectures on Western
Philosophy (with a focus on Ancient Greek Philosophy) and Eastern
Philosophy (Daoism, Confucianism and Indian Philosophy).
All the relevant information can be found here:
https://vd-philosophy.univie.ac.at/phd-program/doctoral-training/summer-sch…
Dates: 25-30 July 2024
Location: Neues Institutsgebäude, Universitätsring 1, 1010 Wien
The deadline for applications is March 15, 2024.

Dear colleagues,
I'm pleased to invite you to our next APSE talk on Thursday, 25th
January 2024, 3:00 (s.t.) - 5:00 p.m. in HS 3A, 3. OG, NIG.
The speaker is Professor Stella Villarmea (Complutense University of
Madrid & University of Oxford). She will be speaking about:
"Birthing: Vindicating a Visceral Body Philosophically"
Abstract:
Birth matters matter — and they matter philosophically too. I work on
philosophy of birth, that is, I use the tools of philosophy to analyse
representations and practices around childbirth. My thesis is that to
reorient philosophical conversation toward birth and, specifically, to
the origin of our lives in the female body, produces a radical shift.
Once we take that turn, many of the tales about our origin truly become
'old-tales'. Are we already imagining a new genealogy, a new logos for
genos? Can we philosophically (and medically/obstetrically) represent
and vindicate this new genea-logy?
The talk will be followed by a dinner. Please let me know if you would
like to join.
I'm looking forward to seeing you.
Best wishes,
Anne Sophie

Sehr geehrte Kolleg:innen,

Abstract:
The thought that there are cultural landmarks which have universal value
is a familiar one. It is at the heart of UNESCO's and the World
Heritage's mission, and is affirmed in a number of international
declarations, not least the Convention Concerning the Protection of
World Cultural and Natural Heritage. For all its appeal, UNESCO's ideals
raise some deep concerns. In particular, it is not easy to articulate an
account of universal value; and it is not easy to show why we are under
moral obligations in respect of that heritage. Nevertheless, I attempt
to defend those ideals. I seek to show that the protection of
humankind's heritage, qua humankind's, not only is a moral imperative:
more strongly put, it is a duty of justice. I then address one of the
most important objections to it - namely that it undermines states’ and
their citizenries’ legitimate interest in deciding what to do with
landmarks which are located on their territory.

Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. She is also Professor of Political
Philosophy at the University of Oxford, and affiliated with the Faculty

"Good doesn't cut it: quality and quantity in the reception history of
Vermeer“
a Lecture on Monday, January 22nd, 7 pm
at University of Applied Arts, Vordere Zollamtsstr. 7, 5th Floor, SE 20
In the mid 18th century, the King of Saxony bought a Vermeer because he
was told it was a Rembrandt, and he believed it. A few decades on, the
King of France declined to buy a Vermeer because it was not a Rembrandt.
Vermeer has always been good – anyone could see that. But good doesn’t
cut it when you’re selling to kings, oil barons, financiers, and
rappers. His example tells us that, across art history, from Old Masters
to post-postmodernists, quality is not a given, but subject to trend and

attributed to Vermeer's paintings, and how value, over time, made us see
those paintings differently.

Dear Colleagues,
The Reading Circle of the Research Group "Poststructuralism, Gender

Vera Bühlmann (TU Vienna):
The Out-With and the With-Out, Or How to Think of the Digital in
Relation to a Philological "Ex Tempore"
Friday, January 26th 2024, 6-8pm, Hörsaal 2i (NIG), Department of
Philosophy (and online), Lecture and Discussion
Vera Bühlmann's recent book _The Digital, a Continent? Nature and
Poetics_ (Birkhäuser, 2024) presents a natural philosophy way of
thinking that draws from the optics and the sensibilities of New
Materialisms: Mathematical, poetical and rhetorical ideations help to
call, count, measure and proportion impersonal "thought" that "happens"
much like the weather does. It foregrounds thereby an agency as we
address it when we say "it rains", or "there is wind", or "a storm is
coming". The chapters of this book show how for the cunning reason of a
Mechanic in the old, artistic sense of the word (literally "one who
thinks and acts resourcefully") there is neither a necessity for
devotion nor humiliation involved when acknowledging that things _in the
first and last instance_ remain cryptic (dependent upon ciphering). For
what the mechanic's craft excels in and reveals objectively is how to
keep ideas and things moving and morphing, how to make them and render
them referential and graspable beyond a strict nature-culture
distinction. The knowledge the mechanic aims at conveying is how to
domesticate the meanwhile: How can we develop ideations of energy, form
and intellect in play together rationally and objectively, and yet in an
indefinite variety of ways and across many scales? Such sites of play
would have to be articulated and tuned by an architectonics for which
world and earth are neither synonymous nor subjected one to the other.
The chapters in this book explore the idea that we can better maintain
active relations to ourselves and to the currently emerging paradigm(s)
of planetary cultures, politics and economies when we study how there is
coding at work not only in the human domain but also in the natural
world too.
But how to think of such an idea of "coding", how to consider the
relations between method, poetics, technics and the arts? The talk will
explore resonances to Werner Hamacher's _95 Theses on Philology _(2009)_
_as well as his notion of "Ex Tempore" in _On the Brink. Language, Time,
History and Politics_ (2020).
Vera Bühlmann is Professor for Architecture Theory at Vienna University
of Technology TU, and director of the research group Architecture Theory
and Philosophy of Technics ATTP.

Dear all,
this is a reminder for the first Trans*Formations event! Trans
Philosophy is one of the most exciting 'new' strands of philosophical
theorizing, and we are happy to host the first event on the topic at the
University of Vienna.
First, Luce deLire (formerly John Hopkins University,
https://getaphilosopher.com/) will give the talk "Can The Transsexual
Speak?".
Abstract: On September 14, 2021 Ella Nik Bayan set herself on fire at
Berlin Alexanderplatz, Germany. She died shortly after. On February 2,
2024, the German government will most probably pass a new
'Self-Determination Law' (Selbstbestimmungsgesetz) which promises to
simplify transition related changes of name and gender identity markers
in legal documents. In my talk, I use these two examples to present what
I call 'the transsexual contract': Trans and non-binary self
determination is (often violently) incapacitated by means of concrete
legal, political and epistemological arrangements. This is the case even
in left wing art, activism and allegedly 'progressive' legislation.
Allegedly, the transsexual contract protects cis people from trans
propaganda and from their own confusion. Yet in reality, its main goal
is the production and control of cis people. One is not born cis, but
becomes cis. With a post-colonial lens, I suggest queer hospitality as a
concrete practice to unlearn this toxic logic of protection.
After a Q&A with Luce deLire, we will watch the film "Die Räuberinnen"
(2023) by Austrian filmmaker Isa Schieche, who recently also received
the Goldene Medusa Award for this film.(More Info:
https://isaschieche.com/Die-Rauberinnen)
About the film: Three trans women meet in a country house to plan a
robbery. The trick of the heist is that, in order to create a false
trail, they disguise themselves as men. While they share everyday life
as a well-established team and lovers, they practice speaking in a deep
voice, walking manly and behaving in a masculine manner.
In this process, they reach their emotional and physical limits and
repeatedly fail to imitate male connoted behavior."Die Räuberinnen" is a
sociological analysis of male- and female-attributed behavior and
traits, shaking up binary role models in a swirl of radicalism and
activism.
The talk will be in English, the film is in German with English
subtitles.
There will be popcorn, snacks and drinks to round off the event!
When? Tuesday, January 16th, 2024 from 15:00 to 16:30
Where? HS 3F, Institute of Philosophy, NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010
Vienna)
Looking forward to seeing you on January 16th!
Any sharing of the event is highly appreciated, and the poster for the
event is attached to this email.

or questions!

Zoom Workshop: Affective and Mnemonic Injustice (January 30th and 31st, 2024)
In recent years, there’s been a growing interest in identifying the different ways in which a person or a group of persons can be a victim of injustice, as well as the psychological/subjective effects that the various types of injustice can have on people’s status as epistemic, affective and mnemonic agents, among others. Following this trend, the purpose of this workshop will be to investigate two distinctive types of injustice as well as their possible conceptual and empirical links: affective and mnemonic injustice.
The first seeks to capture kinds of injustices committed against individuals specifically in their capacities as affective agents, for example, by systematically provoking distressing experiences such as fear, sadness or despair, by manipulating others’ emotions in a way that might prove detrimental to their well-being, or by denying others opportunities to express and regulate their emotional responses. The latter seeks to capture how stereotypes can shape what we remember, so that accounts of fairness and social justice have to be taken into consideration in debates about different kinds of mnemonic capacities. These two kinds of injustices have obvious interconnections, as can be seen, for example, in the way that provoking a traumatic experience upon another person is a kind of injustice that has both an affective and a mnemonic component. We hope that the talks in this workshop, and the discussion that will follow them, will bring out these (and other) philosophical interconnections. As a result, we hope to show that the philosophy of memory and the philosophy of emotion are deeply political subject matters, something that is often overlooked within these disciplines. Far from being a marginal topic, the politics of memory and affectivity is at the heart of questions as to how memory and affective systems function, their purpose, and their role within our social spheres more broadly. We would thus like to invite everyone to join us in discussing and making these topics more visible in the philosophical community.
Programme:

Liebe Kolleg:innen,

of the Standing Group on Kantian Political Thought
The ECPR Standing Group on Kantian Political Thought is delighted to
announce that its application for a section on "Kant, Science and
Politics" as part of the ECPR General Conference (University College
Dublin, 12-15 August 2024) has been successful, and 6 panels have been
allocated to the Section.
As a result, paper and panel proposals for the section "Kant, Science
and Politics" are now invited. Paper proposals may either be submitted
as part of one of the five suggested panels below or as part of a new
panel on a topic related to that of the section. The aim of this section
is to examine Kant's view of a practical metaphysics (both in ethics and
politico-juridical philosophy) that is on the secure path of science;
the following are suggested panel topics:
* The Relation Between Theoretical and Practical Cognitions
* Kant's Conception of Moral Theory as a Philosophical Science
* The "Land of Truth" - The Political Language of Scientific Truth
* Autonomy and the Moral Law
* Science and Racism - Kant's Anthropology and the Need for
Reorientation of Kant Scholarship
You may find further details on the section here: Kant, Science and
Politics (ecpr.eu) [1].

Dear all,
on behalf of the APSE Group (Applied Philosophy of Science and
Epistemology), I would like to remind you about the talk by Aleksandra
Derra (Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland), which will
happen ONLINE tomorrow, December 14th, 2023 from 15:00 - 17:00.
Please find the abstract & link below!
Please also forward this invite to others who could be interested.
Title: Another Science is Possible. The Role of Feminist Theory in
Building Socially Responsible Scientific Knowledge
Londa Schiebinger, in her book entitled ‘Has Feminism Changed Science’
(2001), has shown how the growing number of female scientists gradually
transformed specific fields of science. Following her reasoning, I want
to point out how feminist theories influence the way we think about
science in the philosophy of science and science and technology studies
today, and additionally indicate how the critical feminist approach
affects the priorities, methodologies, and aims of the particular fields
of knowledge.
In the first step, following Janet Kourany, I will explain what a
socially responsible philosophy of science is. Then I will show what it
means to adopt a feminist perspective in science and to include a gender
perspective in research. Then, I will present research results that
indicate that science as an institution is entangled in broader cultural
processes that perpetuate stereotypes (e.g. Draw a Scientist experiment,
visualization of a female scientist, the role of material culture).
Finally, I will present two examples of building complementary, socially
responsible scientific knowledge, enriched with a critical feminist
perspective: neurofeminism and data feminism.

Dear Colleagues,
This is an email to remind you that the next presentations in the
Work-In-Progress series will be given by Bogdan Mićić and Philipp Quell
this coming Monday. Please see their titles and abstracts below.
"The ontological foundation of Pletho’s virtue ethics" by Bogdan Mićić
The short but dense treatise /Perì aretôn/ 'On Virtues' is not the only
work in which Pletho deals with moral-philosophical topics and
questions, but it is indeed the work in which Pletho presents and
develops his moral philosophy in the most systematic way. There is
surprising amount of literature which has been written and published
since the 1840s about Pletho's life and work. However, only a small part
of the otherwise relatively rich secondary literature is dedicated to
Plethonic ethics and an even smaller part wo the work /Perì aretôn/,
while the largest part is dealing with Pletho’s theology and
metaphysics. One reason (though, probably not the only one) for this is
that Pletho's (moral) philosophy, especially at first glance, hardly has
any originality. Further, it seems to be affected by a profound
eclecticism, which makes Plethon's ethics seem more like a disjointed
piecemeal: Different, sometimes even seemingly incompatible, thoughts of
various thinkers appear. A universal principle which could unify the
scattered thoughts seems to be lacking. In short, Pletho’s ethics, at
first glance, does not seem like a coherent theory. The eclectic
features of Pletho’s moral philosophy has led some researchers to accuse
Pletho of arbitrariness or a lack of critical reflection in advance.
This is wrong. I venture out to show that Pletho’s moral philosophy is
not a more or less arbitrary 'catalogue' of virtues collected without
adhering to an overarching principle and to show that this view is
short-sighted and excessive. To prove this, I will first show that the
Plethonic doctrine of virtue is thoroughly determined by a unifying
principle that underpins the theory. I will then identify this principle
as the ontological-metaphysical requirement for every being to adhere to
the specific ontological hierarchy. From this it will follow that it is
possible to draw conclusions about Pletho's ontology starting from his
doctrine of virtues (since the latter follows from the former). This
will prove that the relative neglect of treatise /Perì aretôn/ by
previous researchers is inappropriate not only in a historical respect
(/Perì aretôn/ was the most distributed and cited work out of Pletho’s
texts in his time), but also in a systematic respect: Because /Perì
aretôn/ provides remarkable insights in Pletho's ontology, Plethon's
doctrine of virtues should also be read and worked on also and
especially by people who are only interested in his theoretical philosophy.
In my talk, I will illustrate this by giving a detailed interpretation
of the first 14 lines of the text (/Peri aret/. A 1, 1.1–16).
"Aristotle’s Systematic Essentialism" by Philipp Quell:
Although many of Aristotle’s scientific findings are revised, for
example the geocentric thesis, his understanding of scientific
structures and the criteria for them to be able to discover truth is
still very similar to our scientific world. My thesis and argumentation
will focus on the Aristotelian system of sciences, mainly elaborated in
his logical writings. Within this argumentation one fundamental
difference will be found, too and I am excited to hear your opinon about
the fundamentality of this difference.
The presentation will take place in Hörsaal 3A (NIG, Universitätsstraße
7, 3.Stock) at 13:30and will last up to sixty minutes. All are invited
to join afterwards for refreshments and snacks before the Writing
Evening begins.

6th Arthur Pap Lecture
What role do definitions play in axiomatics?
Paola Cantù (Université Aix-Marseille)
December 7, 2023
4 - 6 pm
Alte Kapelle am Campus, Yard 2, Entrance 2.8
Abstract
Right from its name, axiomatics focuses on the role of axioms as
starting points for deriving theorems. Definitions are introduced as
useful conventions, but not strictly necessary for a rigorous
presentation of theories. And yet the preeminent interest in definitions
in authors such as Peano and Pap suggests that the issue of definitions
cannot be eliminated as soon as one reflects on the epistemological role
of axiomatics. What role can axiomatics still play today and, within it,
what place should be reserved for definitions?
Please find further information on vcs.univie.ac.at or
https://wienerkreis.univie.ac.at/news-events/ . We are looking forward!
Yours sincerely

Call for Papers (Deadline November 30, 2023)
Paul Feyerabend and Austrian Philosophy - His Formative Years in Postwar Vienna
International Conference - July 5-6, 2024 - University of Vienna, Campus, Court 1
https://www.pkfcentennial.org/
Paul K. Feyerabend (1924-1994), one of the most stimulating and controversial figures of Twentieth-Century philosophy, spent most of his formative years in postwar Vienna (1946-1955). Born in Red Vienna, Feyerabend came of age at the time of the Nazi Anschluss and completed his philosophical apprenticeship at the University of Vienna during the Allied occupation. At the time of his university studies in philosophy and physics, Feyerabend animated the so-called “Third Vienna Circle” (1949-1953) around Viktor Kraft in the context of the Austrian College Society, and actively participated in the European Forum Alpbach and in the Institut für Wissenschaft und Kunst. In addition, he served as a research assistant to Arthur Pap, who spent 1953/54 as a Fulbright visiting professor at the University of Vienna.
The international conference “Paul Feyerabend and Austrian Philosophy” aims at exploring the milieu which shaped Feyerabend’s intellectual development with a focus on his interaction with university teachers and intellectual figures such as members of the former Vienna Circle like Viktor Kraft, Philipp Frank, Herbert Feigl, and Rudolf Carnap, physicists like Felix Ehrenhaft and Walter Thirring, as well as with Walter Hollitscher and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Contacts continued throughout the 1950s and 1960s at the London School of Economics with Karl Popper and, later, with Imre Lakatos, and in Minneapolis, at Feigl’s Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science, where Feyerabend published his pathbreaking “Against Method” for the first time in 1970.
A special symposium on the publication of Feyerabend’s Formative Years, edited by Matteo Collodel and Eric Oberheim (Springer Nature, two volumes) will be held as part of this conference.
The conference is organized by the Institute Vienna Circle (University of Vienna) and by the Vienna Circle Society. It is partnered with the subsequent HOPOS 2024, the Fifteenth International Congress of the International Society for the History of Philosophy of Science, University of Vienna, July 8-12, 2024, and it contributes to the Feyerabend 2024 Centennial celebrations.

entangled with one another across a long sweep of intellectual history.
I consider their co-evolution as a prelude to the present, briefly
reviewing formative aspects of Renaissance humanism and deepening
associations of values central to the Enlightenment with precursors to
modern science, en route to an arguably peculiar situation today. Where
past conceptions of the aim of science (natural philosophy, etc.) seem
intimately connected to the idea of fashioning a better world,
contemporary philosophy seems largely devoid of normative discussions of
what science itself is for, exactly. I conclude with some reflections on
a possible return to a humanist conception of the role and promise of
science.
Everyone welcome!
Best, Martin Kusch

Titel: ‘The Last Dogma of Empiricism’: From Auto da Fé to Epistemic
Disobedience?"
Abstract:
Because of
its status as an ideology, and as therefore in the business of hegemonic
sense-making, FVD is made sense of as a real threat to inquiry, insofar
as FVD renders inquiry undemocratic by valorizing simplicity over
complexity, cleanliness over messiness, dry deserts over lush
landscapes. Putnam’s own ‘post-analytic’ pragmatist position never
ostensibly espoused any critical theoretic attitude toward modernity –
let alone formulated Ideologiekritik. Nevertheless, I think his
21st-century articulations of his conceptual pluralism may be said to
display more resonance with the decolonial concept of epistemic
disobedience than with a ‘post-analytic’ tradition Putnam himself
explicitly endorsed in his final decade: liberal naturalism. I conclude
that even though Putnam’s anti-scientistic defence of mathematically
recalcitrant phenomena may be more radical than liberal naturalist
defences of such phenomena, Putnam should be viewed as ultimately more
epistemically mischievous than epistemically disobedient.

*"Protecting Humankind’s Common Cultural Heritage: The Problem of
Cultural Appropriation"*
by Cecile Fabre (All Souls College, Oxford).
Thu Dec. 14th, 2023, 6:30 p.m. in HS 3D (NIG)

Vienna Campus

*Thursday, November 16, 2023, 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm***

This lecture examines whether the Neoplatonic explanation of evil can be
seen as an antecedent of the Leibnizian metaphysics of evil, as is often
claimed. The starting-point is Augustine’s distinction between “malum
culpae” and “malum poenae”, to which Leibniz is indebted. The concept of
metaphysical evil is needed to encompass instances of evil that do not
fall under that distinction.

Aristotle’s philosophy of nature has been underestimated for centuries. His
Physics was considered by the protagonists of the “Scientific Revolution” as
a sterile system; the idea that there is no place for an Aristotelian
perspective
in science was, subsequently, reinforced by the development of Newtonian
mechanics. Against this traditional view, the lecture seeks to show that
Aristotle’s conception of nature is one of his most fruitful ideas, and
that the
insights gained from Aristotle’s work are becoming increasingly relevant to
contemporary science. Furthermore, the lecture argues that, in the light
of the
impressive discoveries in numerous fields of science, especially in
physics, a
closer look at Aristotle’s work will reveal that the Stageirite has
elaborated a
dynamic model of nature, which is much closer than Newtonian physics to the
new scientific image of nature emerging today. At the same time, Aristotle’s
insights into the inter-relation of all disciplines and the unity of
knowledge can
respond to the growing need for a re-unification of the various sciences
through
an interdisciplinary approach.

on the importance of Aristotle’s thought for the current sciences is
documented
in her studies on Quantum Mechanics, Microphysics and the Bio-Sciences.
She edited Aristotle and Contemporary Science (two volumes, 2000/2001) and

Aristotle’s
thinking. As President of the C. S. Peirce Society she chaired the

*Workshop: "What difference does 'being' make? **The role of the verb
εἰμί in the clause and its manifestation in **philosophical discourse"*
Historians of ancient Greek philosophy often lack the necessary
knowledge to understand the strange expressions of the philosophers they
study. Moreover, ancient Greek philosophers sometimes use such
expressions as technical terms, as is the case with those that contain
the verb εἰμί 'am' (≈ to be).
Following philosophers like Frege and Russell, historians of ancient
philosophy usually approach the semantics of "being" from a logical
point of view, showing more interest in the logical operations behind
εἰμί-sentences than in the function of the verb εἰμί within the clause.
If one surveys the philosophical literature, one will find countless
mentions of the 'is' of "existence", the 'is' of "predication", or the
'is' of "identity", but hardly any mention of the difference between
lexical verbs and auxiliary verbs―and copulas are auxiliaries for
predication.
To compensate for these deficiencies, we have set out to bring together
nine distinguished experts in Ancient Greek to hear what they have to
say about the verb εἰμί and its role in the clause. The idea is to learn
from them so that we do not overlook important linguistic matters when
we approach ancient Greek philosophy. For we must not forget that Greek
philosophers coined both logical and ontological terms in natural
language, that is, in Ancient Greek.

Lecture: "The Name of the Verb: On the Persistence of the Aristotelian
View of the Copula in
Formal Syntax"
We are pleased to invite you to the in-person lecture "The Name of the
Verb: On the Persistence of the Aristotelian View of the Copula in
Formal Syntax", which will take place on December 5, 2023
(Marietta-Blau-Saal, University of Vienna, Main Building).
Professor Andrea Moro will speak about the validity of the Aristotelian
interpretation of the verb "to be" in formal syntax.
*The Name of the Verb*
Beginning with the early works of Aristotle, the interpretation of the
verb "to be" and its equivalents across languages runs through Western
linguistic thought intertwining with philosophy, metaphysics, logic, and
even mathematics―so much so that Bertrand Russell showed no hesitation
in proclaiming it to be "a disgrace to the human race". Professor Moro
will show that this verb is still a scandal and, like a Trojan horse of
linguistics, it introduces disruptive elements that lead us to a radical
rethinking of the most basic structure of human language, the sentence,
paradoxically reviving Aristotle's original view.
