Invitation: APSE talk by Igor Grabovac & accompanying reading circle

Dear all, we warmly invite you to the next APSE (Applied Philosophy of Science and Epistemology) lecture and to the accompanying Reading Cycle. The talk will be held by Igor Grabovac (MedUni Wien). Title: From Pandoras Box to Pandoras Hope: Opening the Lid on Transdisciplinary Work in Public Health Date: Thursday, January 30th 2025 Reading Circle: 1pm - 3pm Talk: 3pm - 5 pm Location: Room 3A, NIG Abstract of the talk (3-5 PM): Climate change, armed conflicts, rising inequities, pandemics, and the displacement of large population groups constitute some of the most pressing current concerns for the discipline of Public Health. These complex issues require intersectional analyses and solutions--and a turn to transdisciplinary research. This need is commonly voiced in Public Health literature and increasingly enacted through funding calls and commissions. In this talk, I want to show how the over-reliance on biomedical knowledge and its accompanying reductionism has left Public Health not only "de-socialized," but current attempts to "add in" social science knowledge--as one pathway for transdisciplinarity--often fall short of the promise to transcend disciplinary boundaries and create more suitable types of knowledge. Starting with the work of John Ryle, Julius Tandler, and Andrija Stampar, I will provide a short overview of the historical development of Public Health and its separation from the field of Social Medicine. Using the examples of Michael Marmot and Camara Phyllis Jones on the "Social Determinants of Health," I will then present the changes in the field in its move towards structural explanations of health inequalities. Finally, I end on the work of Emily Yates-Doerr and her critique of the pervasive "determinants model," showcasing the potential, affordances, and demands of true transdisciplinarity in Public Health today. Title: Coherence and Truth Date: Thursday, January 23rd 2025 Reading Circle: 1pm - 3pm Talk: 3pm - 5 pm Location: this APSE event will exceptionally NOT take place in room 3A but in the "Konferenzzimmer" of the Department of Political Science (Institut für Politikwissenschaften). This room is located in the NIG, 2nd floor, in hallway A (the one at staircase 1). You can find the room on the floorplan here: Orientierung [1] Abstract of the talk (3-5 PM): One of the most important questions in epistemology is what our knowledge of the world is ultimately based on. In this context, some epistemologists argue that there are fundamental beliefs that do not themselves require justification and on which all other beliefs depend. Coherence theorists reject this answer and argue instead that our knowledge is based on the mutual support of the propositions under consideration: If our beliefs add up to a coherent whole, then we have a reason for them to be true. It has also been argued that much of scientific reasoning relies on coherence considerations. In this talk, we will first outline the coherence theory of justification and discuss some of the reasons for and against it. In doing so, we will also address the central question of what coherence actually is. For this purpose, a Bayesian framework proves particularly useful, as coherence considerations are most effective in the domain of uncertainty. We will then take a closer look at the relationship between coherence and truth. To what extent is the coherence of a set of propositions an indicator of its truth? Answering this question leads to some old and new challenges for the coherence theorist. The talk concludes with a moderately optimistic assessment of the role of coherence considerations in everyday life and in science. Date:16/01/2025 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 2G Abstract: This paper calls into question the thesis that early Carnap's rational reconstruction arises as a proto-version of his later and more mature idea of explication. The aim of the paper is to show that (1) according to the criteria of similarity, exactness, and fruitfulness, rational reconstruction qualifies as an explication, and that (2) according to their explanatory preconditions, rational reconstruction and explication emerge as processes of conceptual generalization and specification, respectively. To support (1), I consider rational reconstruction, in terms of early Carnap's quasi-analysis, as a representational theory of mathematical structures; to support (2), I rely on formal concept analysis as a common framework for comparing conceptual constructions.

Seine Forschungsarbeit zeichnet sich insbesondere durch einen trans- und interdisziplinären Ansatz aus, der unterschiedliche Wissensgebiete miteinander in Verbindung bringt. Dazu zählen die Psychoanalyse, die Rechtsgeschichte und die Theologie bzw. Religionsgeschichte. Die Berücksichtigung dieser Spannungsfelder, in denen Legendre zufolge das Wissen über die Reproduktion der sprechenden Gattung Mensch aufbewahrt wird, führte ihn zu einer erneuerten Fokussierung der politisch- und sozialphilosophisch bedeutsamen Frage nach dem Verhältnis von menschlicher Existenz und Institution: Ist das Institutionelle für die menschliche Existenz etwas Äußerliches oder ist es ihr ein wesentlich zugehöriges Phänomen, ohne das sie selbst nicht sein könnte? Welcher Bedeutung kommt in dieser Hinsicht Legendres Begriff der „dogmatische Anthropologie“ zu? Diese Frage gewinnt in der heutigen Zeit zunehmend an Bedeutung, in der, wie Roberto Esposito treffend formuliert, konservative Institutionen und anti-institutionelle Praktiken jede politische Dialektik der Erneuerung zu verhindern scheinen. Obwohl die Relevanz seines Denkens für unsere Gegenwart mittlerweile als unbestritten gilt, befindet sich die Rezeption von Legends Werk im deutschsprachigen Raum noch im Anfangsstadium. Um die Erforschung des Werkes von Legendre weiter voranzutreiben und auch Kolleginnen und Kollegen auf sein Denken aufmerksam zu machen, orientiert sich das Symposium an folgenden leitenden Fragen: Was sind die theoretischen und ideengeschichtlichen Hintergründe seines Denkens? Wie und was ist unter dem Begriff der „dogmatischen Anthropologie“ zu verstehen und inwiefern kommt ihm eine herausragende Bedeutung zu, über das Verhältnis von Indivduum und Institution Auskunft zu geben? Summer School Call for Applications (Deadline: February 15, 2025) 23rd univie: summer school Scientific World Conceptions (USS-SWC) The History and Epistemology of Econometrics Vienna, July 7-11, 2025 https://summerschool-ivc.univie.ac.at/ Course Description Models and their econometric estimation play an increasingly important role in modern economic and political life. From macroeconomic policy and financial regulation to public health and climate policy, models contribute to shaping policies. The generation of ever more data is likely to support the proliferation of models and econometrics. Research resources in academia focus on the theoretical foundations of the underlying model and on the statistical methods of econometrics; much less attention is devoted to the epistemological challenges of the underlying concepts, the normative challenges of the everyday work with econometrics, and the application of its results in policy decisions and evaluation. The objective of this program is to increase attention amongst philosophers of science, academic economists, and empirical economists in policy institutions (eg, central banks) to these issues. The course is also structured around a particular point of view namely, that economics is a science of models and that most of the main features of econometrics relate generally to the role of models in science. Topics will be selected reflecting participants interests and may include: * History of econometrics to frame the philosophical issues to be discussed in the course * The Vienna Circle and econometrics * Values and Ethical Pitfalls in econometric research * Key philosophical issues of how models relate to the world and how they relate to each other * Data: observation, classification, and measurement of economic variables from a modeling point of view * Conceptual issues related to modeling randomness * The identification problem: how possibly, if at all possible, to map descriptive relations onto theoretical variables? * Issues related to optional stopping, search methodologies, and the proper interpretation of results obtained through search * Different approaches to the nature of causation and different strategies of causal inference * The conceptual basis of graphical causal modeling and controlled, natural, and field experiments * The conceptual issues surrounding the problem of model uncertainty, as well as some of the strategies economists use to address it Main Lecturers: Kevin D. Hoover (Duke University) Kevin D. Hoover is Professor of Economics and Philosophy and Senior Fellow of the Center for the History of Political Economy at Duke University. He is the editor of the journal History of Political Economy and a past editor of the Journal of Economic Methodology. His current research addresses causality, causal inference in economics, the history of macroeconomics, philosophical issues related to the microfoundations of macroeconomics, and the engagement with economics of the American pragmatist philosopher Charles. S. Peirce. He is the author of The New Classical Macroeconomics, the Methodology of Empirical Macroeconomics, Causality in Macroeconomics, Applied Intermediate Macroeconomics, as well as many articles in monetary and macroeconomics, the history of economics, the philosophy of economics, and applied econometrics. Jennifer Jhun (Duke University) Jennifer Jhun is an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department at Duke University, as well as a Senior Fellow of the Center for the History of Political Economy. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh. It consists of a talk by Laura Caponetto (Milan) entitled "Refusing - and Refusing to Obey" and an accompanying reading circle prior to the talk. Please write to veronika.lassl(a)univie.ac.at if you would like to join. Everyone is welcome to attend parts or all of this event! Abstract: We can do several different things with the word ‘No’. We can turn down an offer, decline an invitation, deny permission. We can engage in civil disobedience. In this talk, I aim to map these varieties and unpack the normative profile of refusal. I argue that refusal constitutes an illocutionary family comprising acts which have different felicity conditions but share the definitional normative function of preventing certain obligations from being created or waived. I begin by singling out what I take to be the paradigmatic case of refusal. I then broaden the picture a little, to consider speech acts that share ‘family resemblances’ with this paradigmatic case. And then I broaden it further, to look at speech acts that populate the ‘illocutionary neighborhood’, including ‘refusal to obey’. The talk expands upon my previous work on the topic (Caponetto 2023). While that work was primarily concerned with ‘upstream norms’ for refusing (i.e. the conditions under which refusal succeeds), I here focus on its ‘downstream norms’ – on the changes refusal effects on the normative landscape. Jänner 2025, 18.30 Uhr FAKTory | Literatur, Wissen und Beratung für Studierende Universitätsstraße 9, 1010 Wien Mitte der 1920er Jahre entwickelte ein Team rund um den Ökonomen und Wissenschaftsphilosophen Otto Neu rath die Wiener Methode der Bildstatistik. Vor allem für Arbeiter*innen und an Schulen sollten soziale und ökonomische Zusammenhänge bildhaft vermittelt werden. Austrofaschismus und Nationalsozialismus zwangen die Gruppe zur Flucht, ihre Bildsprache aber wurde international. Ab Mitte der 1930er Jahre hieß sie ISOTYPE International System Of TYpographic Picture Education. Das Buch History and Legacy of Isotype zeichnet diese Geschichte nach und verweist auf ihre ungebrochene Aktualität wissenschaftliches Wissen in der Gesellschaft und im politischen Diskurs zu stärken. Invitation Policy bias in economic research and the epistemological problems of econometrics: Lessons for designing economic policy processes SUERF BAFFI Bocconi webinar Tuesday, January 14, 2025 Online, Webex, 3-4.30 pm A recent paper finds considerable policy bias in economic research. Jelveh, Kogut and Naidu (2024) show that partisanship is detectable across fields and within fields, even across those estimating the same theoretical parameter. This poses serious challenges to economic policy development. Models and their econometric estimation play an increasingly important role in modern economic and political life. From macroeconomic policy and financial regulation to public health and climate policy, models contribute to shaping policies. The generation of ever more data is likely to support the proliferation of models and econometrics. Yet, research resources in academia focus on the theoretical foundations of the underlying model and on the statistical methods of econometrics; much less attention is devoted to the epistemological challenges of the underlying concepts, the normative challenges of the everyday work with models and econometrics as well as the inevitable role of expert judgement. Yet, understanding these challenges would be crucial to design policy processes that effectively address potential policy biases on economic policy development and ensure the integrity of that process. This SUERF panel discussion discusses how serious the policy bias in economic research is and how it affects policy development. Furthermore, panellists will explain how that policy bias is possible even when rigorous mathematical /statistical methods are employed. Finally, the panel suggests design features of economic policy development processes that improve its integrity in the face of the policy bias in economic research. The oral history of feminist theory website launches with five first interviews with Linda Martín Alcoff, Joan Wallach Scott, Donna J. Haraway, Margo Okazawa-Rey, and Ann Laura Stoler. According to the project leader, Patricia Purtschert, second group of interviews with Anne Fausto-Sterling, Londa Schiebinger, Vandana Shiva and Chandra T. Mohanty will be uploaded soon, and new interviews will be added gradually. with my apologizes in case of cross-posting, brigitta keintzel From the project website: »We are interested in exploring the historical contexts that enabled the thinking of these pathbreaking feminist scholars at the time. We also want to find out how conversations with other feminists as well as collective strands of thinking and debating shaped the emergence of their work. In these conversations, we trace back the genealogies of thoughts and concepts that they helped to bring forth and map future paths of feminist thinking, including such that address current controversies and burning questions. The conversations bring forth exigent questions around power, inequality and violence, they tackle the relation of sex, gender and sexuality as well as the relation of sex, body and materiality. We discuss the contributions of feminism into analyzing and challenging significant differences other than gender – such as race, class, nationality, religion, and caste and the way they are entangled with each other.«

Würzburger Studierenden-Werkstatt für Philosophie Das Institut für Philosophie der Universität Würzburg lädt interessierte Philosophie-Studierende in fortgeschrittenen Semestern ein, ihre philosophischen Untersuchungen und Forschungen im Rahmen einer Studierenden-Werkstatt vorzustellen. Der Workshop bietet Studierenden der Philosophie die Möglichkeit, eigene Ideen vorzustellen, sich an einem philosophischen Fachvortrag zu versuchen und sich mit etablierten Forschenden im kollegialen Rahmen des Würzburger Instituts für Philosophie auszutauschen und zu vernetzen. Dies ermöglicht den Teilnehmenden, ausgiebige Rückmeldungen zu ihren Arbeiten von Würzburger Professor*innen und Mitarbeiter*innen zu erhalten und mit diesen in Dialog zu treten. Kunstkritiker, Vorkämpfer der Kulturmoderne. Eine Kollektivbiografie/, Vienna: Virtual Archive of Logical Empiricism, 2024 Mit Beiträgen von *Hans-Joachim Dahms* und *Christian Damböck*. Das Buch „Franz Roh 1890-1965“ setzt sich zum Ziel, den Vordenker und Vorkämpfer der Kulturmoderne auf wissenschaftlicher Grundlage nach intensivem Quellenstudium und Archivrecherchen vorzustellen. Keine Ausstellung, die sich mit der mitteleuropäischen Moderne der 1920 Jahre befasst, kommt heutzutage an Franz Roh als ihrem Begleiter und Vordenker vorbei. The goal is to update each other on what we have been up to, and to make some new plans for providing support to underrepresented groups in philosophy. Bring your best ideas, your warmest socks and maybe an extra pair of tights - it's supposed to be fairly cold that day! UPSalon are a group of BA, MA, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers; the initiative aims at creating a space and community in Vienna where underrepresented philosophers – such as women, trans*, inter and non-binary persons, BIPoC, socioeconomically disadvantaged people, queer people, and people with disabilities – can connect on a regular basis. All are welcome! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Matteo Collodel (IVC Fellow) CRITICISM, MISREPRESENTATION, AND DECLINE: FEYERABEND AND LOGICAL EMPIRICISM Philosophy of Science Colloquium The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows. Date: 21/11/2024 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 2G ABSTRACT: Feyerabend became familiar with the Vienna Circle tradition and Logical Empiricism in his formative years in post-war Vienna. However, since his early intellectual trajectory, he made LE one of his favorite critical targets, articulating his criticism in personal dialogue with some of its most distinguished representatives. This paper focuses on the second stage of Feyerabend's sustained assault against LE, examining both Feyerabend's reception of LE and Hempel's response to Feyerabend's challenge. In a series of papers published between 1962 and 1966, Feyerabend relentlessly questioned the descriptive adequacy and the normative desirability of the 'orthodox', logical empiricist, accounts of reduction and explanation advanced by Hempel and Nagel. Feyerabend's persistent criticism shook North American philosophy of science and prompted Hempel's reaction, which appeared in print in the second half of the 1960s. Initially, Hempel retorted that Feyerabend's methodological analysis was 'completely mistaken' and Feyerabend could offer 'no support' for his allegations. This raises interesting historiographical questions about the later reception of LE as it seems that Feyerabend, driven by his anti-authoritarian stance, substantially misinterpreted the logical empiricist research programme, his vantage point notwithstanding. On the other hand, Hempel also recognised that the descriptive issues on which Feyerabend insisted, despite having been long acknowledged by LE, could have more far-reaching consequences than previously envisaged. In fact, by the end of the 1960s, Hempel came to make quite radical concessions, admitting that the standard logical empiricist model for explicating the structure of scientific theories was essentially 'misleading', that the logical empiricist account of reduction was 'an untenable oversimplification', and that the logical empiricist approach as to the meaning of scientific terms was actually 'misconceived'. In this respect, there are good reasons to consider the decline of the logical empiricist research programme in the 1970s at least partly as the result of Feyerabend's stimulating, however misrepresenting, insights.

Date: 14/11/2024 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 2G Abstract: Instrumental devices are linguistic expressions that are formal or non-representational but nevertheless indispensable or at least instrumentally useful for certain theoretical purposes. We give a systematic study of such expressions and their roles in theorizing, thus offering a unified treatment of instrumental devices across different philosophical areas. Specifically, we present an explication of two general types of such devices, namely merely expressive devices and merely inferential devices and discuss their respective theoretical roles based on a number of philosophical examples. Joint work with Hannes Leitgeb (LMU Munich).

Summer School Call for Applications (Deadline: February 15, 2025) 23rd univie: summer school Scientific World Conceptions (USS-SWC) The History and Epistemology of Econometrics Vienna, July 7-11, 2025 https://summerschool-ivc.univie.ac.at/ Course Description Models and their econometric estimation play an increasingly important role in modern economic and political life. From macroeconomic policy and financial regulation to public health and climate policy, models contribute to shaping policies. The generation of ever more data is likely to support the proliferation of models and econometrics. Research resources in academia focus on the theoretical foundations of the underlying model and on the statistical methods of econometrics; much less attention is devoted to the epistemological challenges of the underlying concepts, the normative challenges of the everyday work with econometrics, and the application of its results in policy decisions and evaluation. The objective of this program is to increase attention amongst philosophers of science, academic economists, and empirical economists in policy institutions (eg, central banks) to these issues. The course is also structured around a particular point of view namely, that economics is a science of models and that most of the main features of econometrics relate generally to the role of models in science. Topics will be selected reflecting participants interests and may include: * History of econometrics to frame the philosophical issues to be discussed in the course * The Vienna Circle and econometrics * Values and Ethical Pitfalls in econometric research * Key philosophical issues of how models relate to the world and how they relate to each other * Data: observation, classification, and measurement of economic variables from a modeling point of view * Conceptual issues related to modeling randomness * The identification problem: how possibly, if at all possible, to map descriptive relations onto theoretical variables? * Issues related to optional stopping, search methodologies, and the proper interpretation of results obtained through search * Different approaches to the nature of causation and different strategies of causal inference * The conceptual basis of graphical causal modeling and controlled, natural, and field experiments * The conceptual issues surrounding the problem of model uncertainty, as well as some of the strategies economists use to address it Main Lecturers: Kevin D. Hoover (Duke University) Kevin D. Hoover is Professor of Economics and Philosophy and Senior Fellow of the Center for the History of Political Economy at Duke University. He is the editor of the journal History of Political Economy and a past editor of the Journal of Economic Methodology. His current research addresses causality, causal inference in economics, the history of macroeconomics, philosophical issues related to the microfoundations of macroeconomics, and the engagement with economics of the American pragmatist philosopher Charles. S. Peirce. He is the author of The New Classical Macroeconomics, the Methodology of Empirical Macroeconomics, Causality in Macroeconomics, Applied Intermediate Macroeconomics, as well as many articles in monetary and macroeconomics, the history of economics, the philosophy of economics, and applied econometrics. Jennifer Jhun (Duke University) Jennifer Jhun is an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy Department at Duke University, as well as a Senior Fellow of the Center for the History of Political Economy. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh. Her main research interests are in the philosophy of science, especially philosophy of economics, but also in issues in other areas, such as psychology and physics. His main research focus is on understanding empirical research practices in science outside the lab from a philosophy of science-in-practice perspective. He is particularly interested in the practices of measurement and modelling and the role of mathematics in social science. The first step in these practices is to make sense of the available data. Visualisations play an important role in this. His current research project Vision and Visualisation is nearing completion with a book manuscript Shaping the Phenomena. Dear all, you are cordially invited to a talk in the series "work-in-progress" (WiP) of the research group on Didactics of Philosophy/Ethics: Hana Jermakova, University of Hradec Králové, Czech Republik, will talk about her research project on: The Concept of Intellectual Autonomy in Education (abstract below). The talk will take place next Monday (11.11.2024) at NIG, Hörsaal 3F, 4:45-6:15 pm. Everybody is very welcome! Best, Donata (Romizi) PS: Sorry for crossposting. --------------------------- Abstract: In this talk, I will deal with the concept of philosophizing (philosophical thinking as it is used in czech didactics of philosophy) in education, but using a framework rooted in virtue epistemology. Rather than contrasting it with comeptency-based model (dominant in czech educational system), I try to add a dimension by emphasizing the question of who is a good thinker/knower? I stress the obvious advantages of the intellectual virtues approach (social and contextual character of virtues, motivational aspect the role of epistemic emotions, and also the intuitive language of this framework).
