The Role of Knowledge in Democratic Societies Panel Discussion and Reception 21 February 2024 19:30 - 22:00 Billrothhaus | Frankgasse 8, 1090 Wien Doors open at 19:00. Registration required. "Democracy is a mechanism for distributing knowledge about matters of public interest, allowing us to decide which politicians should govern." This popular view paints the picture that a politician's role is to inform voters about what is in our best interest. Losing elections, then, must be the result of ineffective communication: "If only we'd managed to get our message across to people properly", the story goes, "then they would have seen why they had to vote for us!" This picture clearly falls short of the messy reality of politics. But why? Does it portray an overly rationalistic picture of the democratic process? Is this picture overly idealistic? Does it overestimate the importance of (conveying) knowledge in democratic decisionmaking? Does it overestimate the potential for people to know what is in their best interest? How can we even determine what a person's "best interest" truly is? Call for Participants: univie:summer school “Ways of Doing Philosophy: East and West” – Deadline: March 15, 2024

Dear Colleagues, There is an open call for participants (at the master, doctoral, and postdoctoral level) in the univie:summer school “Ways of Doing Philosophy: East and West” that is organized by our doctoral researchers at the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy. Abstract: Nowadays, the term philosophy is a common currency across cultures, university curricula, and public discourses around the world. But what happens when φιλοσοφία (philosophia) meets contemporary philosophy and its non-Western counterparts such as Chinese zhexue 哲學? The term encompasses a plethora of conceptions of philosophical practices that vary between East and West cultures. This edition of the Summer School will provide a platform for participants to explore and learn from the plurality of philosophical subjects, methods, and purposes. In addition, the Summer School will focus on the past and present bridges between ancient and modern/contemporary philosophy, as well as between Western and non-Western philosophical traditions, and on the global lessons about philosophy that can be drawn from these interactions. The summer school will, in addition, host keynote lectures on Western Philosophy (with a focus on Ancient Greek Philosophy) and Eastern Philosophy (Daoism, Confucianism and Indian Philosophy). Dear colleagues, I'm pleased to invite you to our next APSE talk on Thursday, 25th January 2024, 3:00 (s.t.) - 5:00 p.m. in HS 3A, 3. OG, NIG. The speaker is Professor Stella Villarmea (Complutense University of Madrid & University of Oxford). She will be speaking about: "Birthing: Vindicating a Visceral Body Philosophically" Abstract: Birth matters matter — and they matter philosophically too. I work on philosophy of birth, that is, I use the tools of philosophy to analyse representations and practices around childbirth. My thesis is that to reorient philosophical conversation toward birth and, specifically, to the origin of our lives in the female body, produces a radical shift. Once we take that turn, many of the tales about our origin truly become 'old-tales'. Are we already imagining a new genealogy, a new logos for genos? Can we philosophically (and medically/obstetrically) represent and vindicate this new genea-logy? The talk will be followed by a dinner. Please let me know if you would like to join. Termin: 25.01.2024, 18:30 - 20:00, HS 3F, Neues Institutsgebäude Thema: "CLINAMEN - Bewegtbilder des Denkens" – An der Grenze zwischen Philosophie und Kunst mit einer Performance von Noemi Call und Philipp Quell Beschreibung: Sarah Kofman wirft in ihrer Beschreibung der Paarung von Kunst und Philosophie eine Frage auf: „Aus der Kunst eine philosophische Frage machen, einen Diskurs über die Kunst führen, der sich diesem System von Oppositionen beugt, heißt das nicht die Herrschaftsgeste der Philosophie zu wiederholen, die immer die Kunst dem Logos und der Wahrheit unterordnen wollte?"(Kofman 1990, "Die Melancholie der Kunst" in: Postmoderne und Dekonstruktion, 224) Die Beziehung zwischen Philosophie und Kunst scheint in einer Sackgasse zu sein. Entweder die Philosophie spricht "über" die Kunst und will erklären, was sie "eigentlich" bedeutet, oder sie muss sie unberührt und für sich selbst sprechen lassen. Doch gibt es neben dieser erstarrten Opposition alternative Wege, Holzwege oder Schleichwege vielleicht, die Kunst und Philosophie in einen "Dialog auf Augenhöhe" bringen? In einem Dialog mit dem Videokünstler H. Arcier, der in seinem Werk die atomistische Kosmologie zum Anstoß nimmt, um eine ganz neue Perspektive auf den Tanz zu eröffnen, wollen wir mit einem performativ-philosophischen Text antworten, indem wir Figuren und Impressionen des Videokunstwerks sprachlich verarbeiten und weiterspinnen. Thu Dec. 14th, 2023, 6:30 p.m. in HS 3D (NIG) For questions, contact sophie.kroiss(a)univie.ac.at Abstract: The thought that there are cultural landmarks which have universal value is a familiar one. It is at the heart of UNESCO's and the World Heritage's mission, and is affirmed in a number of international declarations, not least the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. For all its appeal, UNESCO's ideals raise some deep concerns. In particular, it is not easy to articulate an account of universal value; and it is not easy to show why we are under moral obligations in respect of that heritage. Nevertheless, I attempt to defend those ideals. I seek to show that the protection of humankind's heritage, qua humankind's, not only is a moral imperative: more strongly put, it is a duty of justice. I then address one of the most important objections to it - namely that it undermines states’ and their citizenries’ legitimate interest in deciding what to do with landmarks which are located on their territory. /Cecile Fabre a political philosopher, and currently Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. She is also Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Oxford, and affiliated with the Faculty of Philosophy, the Department of Politics and International Relations, and Nuffield College, Oxford. Her research interests are in theories of distributive justice; the philosophy of democracy; just war theory; the ethics of foreign policy, with particular focus on the ethics of economic statecraft and the ethics of espionage. Kristian Vstrup Madsen "Good doesn't cut it: quality and quantity in the reception history of Vermeer“ a Lecture on Monday, January 22nd, 7 pm at University of Applied Arts, Vordere Zollamtsstr. 7, 5th Floor, SE 20 In the mid 18th century, the King of Saxony bought a Vermeer because he was told it was a Rembrandt, and he believed it. A few decades on, the King of France declined to buy a Vermeer because it was not a Rembrandt. Vermeer has always been good – anyone could see that. But good doesn’t cut it when you’re selling to kings, oil barons, financiers, and rappers. His example tells us that, across art history, from Old Masters to post-postmodernists, quality is not a given, but subject to trend and capital. Invitation Vera Bühlmann (TU Wien): The Out-With and the With-Out, Or How to Think of the Digital in Relation to a Philological "Ex Tempore" - January 26th, 6pm, HS 2i (and online)

Dear Colleagues, The Reading Circle of the Research Group "Poststructuralism, Gender Theory, Psychoanalysis" at the University of Vienna cordially invites you to the next public event: Vera Bühlmann (TU Vienna): The Out-With and the With-Out, Or How to Think of the Digital in Relation to a Philological "Ex Tempore" Friday, January 26th 2024, 6-8pm, Hörsaal 2i (NIG), Department of Philosophy (and online), Lecture and Discussion Vera Bühlmann's recent book _The Digital, a Continent? Nature and Poetics_ (Birkhäuser, 2024) presents a natural philosophy way of thinking that draws from the optics and the sensibilities of New Materialisms: Mathematical, poetical and rhetorical ideations help to call, count, measure and proportion impersonal "thought" that "happens" much like the weather does. It foregrounds thereby an agency as we address it when we say "it rains", or "there is wind", or "a storm is coming". The chapters of this book show how for the cunning reason of a Mechanic in the old, artistic sense of the word (literally "one who thinks and acts resourcefully") there is neither a necessity for devotion nor humiliation involved when acknowledging that things _in the first and last instance_ remain cryptic (dependent upon ciphering). For what the mechanic's craft excels in and reveals objectively is how to keep ideas and things moving and morphing, how to make them and render them referential and graspable beyond a strict nature-culture distinction. The knowledge the mechanic aims at conveying is how to domesticate the meanwhile: How can we develop ideations of energy, form and intellect in play together rationally and objectively, and yet in an indefinite variety of ways and across many scales? Such sites of play would have to be articulated and tuned by an architectonics for which world and earth are neither synonymous nor subjected one to the other. The chapters in this book explore the idea that we can better maintain active relations to ourselves and to the currently emerging paradigm(s) of planetary cultures, politics and economies when we study how there is coding at work not only in the human domain but also in the natural world too. But how to think of such an idea of "coding", how to consider the relations between method, poetics, technics and the arts? The talk will explore resonances to Werner Hamacher's _95 Theses on Philology _(2009)_ _as well as his notion of "Ex Tempore" in _On the Brink. Language, Time, History and Politics_ (2020). Vera Bühlmann is Professor for Architecture Theory at Vienna University of Technology TU, and director of the research group Architecture Theory and Philosophy of Technics ATTP. Invitation: Trans*Formations 16.1. – Talk by Luce deLire and Film by Isa Schieche

Dear all, this is a reminder for the first Trans*Formations event! Trans Philosophy is one of the most exciting 'new' strands of philosophical theorizing, and we are happy to host the first event on the topic at the University of Vienna. First, Luce deLire (formerly John Hopkins University, https://getaphilosopher.com/) will give the talk "Can The Transsexual Speak?". Abstract: On September 14, 2021 Ella Nik Bayan set herself on fire at Berlin Alexanderplatz, Germany. She died shortly after. On February 2, 2024, the German government will most probably pass a new 'Self-Determination Law' (Selbstbestimmungsgesetz) which promises to simplify transition related changes of name and gender identity markers in legal documents. In my talk, I use these two examples to present what I call 'the transsexual contract': Trans and non-binary self determination is (often violently) incapacitated by means of concrete legal, political and epistemological arrangements. This is the case even in left wing art, activism and allegedly 'progressive' legislation. Allegedly, the transsexual contract protects cis people from trans propaganda and from their own confusion. Yet in reality, its main goal is the production and control of cis people. One is not born cis, but becomes cis. With a post-colonial lens, I suggest queer hospitality as a concrete practice to unlearn this toxic logic of protection. After a Q&A with Luce deLire, we will watch the film "Die Räuberinnen" (2023) by Austrian filmmaker Isa Schieche, who recently also received the Goldene Medusa Award for this film.(More Info: https://isaschieche.com/Die-Rauberinnen) About the film: Three trans women meet in a country house to plan a robbery. The trick of the heist is that, in order to create a false trail, they disguise themselves as men. While they share everyday life as a well-established team and lovers, they practice speaking in a deep voice, walking manly and behaving in a masculine manner. In this process, they reach their emotional and physical limits and repeatedly fail to imitate male connoted behavior."Die Räuberinnen" is a sociological analysis of male- and female-attributed behavior and traits, shaking up binary role models in a swirl of radicalism and activism. Der sogenannte Transgender Tipping Point deutet auf eine nie dagewesene Präsenz von trans_ Personen in medialen Darstellungen im Globalen Norden hin, die, wenn auch seltener, auch für die Darstellung von inter* und nicht-binären Personen, Lebensrealitäten und Aktivismen gilt. Die Arbeitsgruppe Inter*Trans_Nonbinary der Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Geschlechterforschung (ÖGGF), das Referat Genderforschung (Universität Wien) und das Institut für Theater-, Film und Medienwissenschaft (Universität Wien) laden zu einem Filmprogramm zu emanzipatorischen Zugängen zu trans_inter*nichtbinären Lebensrealitäten im österreichischen Kontext. Zoom Workshop: Affective and Mnemonic Injustice (January 30th and 31st, 2024) In recent years, there’s been a growing interest in identifying the different ways in which a person or a group of persons can be a victim of injustice, as well as the psychological/subjective effects that the various types of injustice can have on people’s status as epistemic, affective and mnemonic agents, among others. Following this trend, the purpose of this workshop will be to investigate two distinctive types of injustice as well as their possible conceptual and empirical links: affective and mnemonic injustice. The first seeks to capture kinds of injustices committed against individuals specifically in their capacities as affective agents, for example, by systematically provoking distressing experiences such as fear, sadness or despair, by manipulating others’ emotions in a way that might prove detrimental to their well-being, or by denying others opportunities to express and regulate their emotional responses. The latter seeks to capture how stereotypes can shape what we remember, so that accounts of fairness and social justice have to be taken into consideration in debates about different kinds of mnemonic capacities. These two kinds of injustices have obvious interconnections, as can be seen, for example, in the way that provoking a traumatic experience upon another person is a kind of injustice that has both an affective and a mnemonic component. We hope that the talks in this workshop, and the discussion that will follow them, will bring out these (and other) philosophical interconnections. As a result, we hope to show that the philosophy of memory and the philosophy of emotion are deeply political subject matters, something that is often overlooked within these disciplines. Far from being a marginal topic, the politics of memory and affectivity is at the heart of questions as to how memory and affective systems function, their purpose, and their role within our social spheres more broadly. Einladung zur Graduiertenkonferenz: "Den Finger in die Wunde legen - Kritische Phänomenologien der Gewalt" am 11./12. Januar

Liebe Kolleg:innen, gerne möchten wir Sie auf die Graduiertenkonferenz "DEN FINGER IN DIE WUNDE LEGEN - Kritische Phänomenologien der Gewalt", die am 11./12. Januar an unserem Institut stattfinden wird, aufmerksam machen. Die Konferenz setzt es sich zur Aufgabe, zum einen die aktuell v. a. im angloamerikanischen Raum sich intensivierende Debatte um die sog. "critical phenomenology" mit Blick auf Phänomene der Gewalt zu erproben. Darüber hinaus soll sie einen Ort des Austausches für junge phänomenologische (Gewalt)Forschung am Institut für Philosophie in Wien eröffnen. Anhand konkreter Phänomenanalysen soll gezeigt werden, wie sich eine für soziale, politische und globale Problemlagen sensibilisierende Phänomenologie mit deskriptiven, genealogischen und kritischen Theorieelemente konstruktiv verbinden lässt und so neue Einsichten für die Gewaltforschung zu eröffnen vermag. Neben den Beiträgen von fortgeschrittenen Master- und Doktoratsstudierenden unseres Instituts, die zu Phänomenen der Gewalt forschen, freuen wir uns zudem auf folgende drei Keynotes: (1) Claudia Brunner, Politikwissenschaftlerin und assoz. Following her reasoning, I want to point out how feminist theories influence the way we think about science in the philosophy of science and science and technology studies today, and additionally indicate how the critical feminist approach affects the priorities, methodologies, and aims of the particular fields of knowledge. In the first step, following Janet Kourany, I will explain what a socially responsible philosophy of science is. Then I will show what it means to adopt a feminist perspective in science and to include a gender perspective in research. Then, I will present research results that indicate that science as an institution is entangled in broader cultural processes that perpetuate stereotypes (e.g. Draw a Scientist experiment, visualization of a female scientist, the role of material culture). Finally, I will present two examples of building complementary, socially responsible scientific knowledge, enriched with a critical feminist perspective: neurofeminism and data feminism. Studierenden-Werkstatt für Philosophie Universität Würzburg 9.–10. April 2024 Call for Abstracts: Vortrag im Rahmen der 1. Würzburger Studierenden-Werkstatt für Philosophie Das Institut für Philosophie der Universität Würzburg lädt interessierte Philosophie-Studierende in fortgeschrittenen Semestern ein, ihre philosophischen Untersuchungen und Forschungen im Rahmen einer Studierenden-Werkstatt vorzustellen. Der Workshop soll Studierenden der Philosophie die Möglichkeit bieten, eigene Ideen vorzustellen, sich an einem philosophischen Fachvortrag zu versuchen und sich mit etablierten Forschenden im kollegialen Rahmen des Würzburger Instituts für Philosophie auszutauschen und zu vernetzen. Dies ermöglicht Ihnen, ausgiebige Rückmeldungen zu ihren Arbeiten von Würzburger Professor*innen und Mitarbeiter*innen zu erhalten und mit diesen in Dialog zu treten. Im Fokus steht die Einübung einer Praxis des gemeinsamen philosophischen Denkens. Bei den vorgestellten Arbeiten kann es sich um Hausarbeiten, Bachelorarbeiten, Essays oder andere studentische Forschung, gerne auch laufende Projekte (Work in Progress), handeln. Besonders willkommen sind Beiträge, die sich mit den Schwerpunkten der Würzburger Forschung befassen: Phänomenologie und Post-Phänomenologie, antike, mittelalterliche und arabische Philosophie. WIP Series 04.12.2023 Reminder (Monday) - "The ontological foundation of Pletho’s virtue ethics" by Bogdan Mićić - "Aristotle’s Systematic Essentialism" by Philipp Quell

Dear Colleagues, This is an email to remind you that the next presentations in the Work-In-Progress series will be given by Bogdan Mićić and Philipp Quell this coming Monday. Please see their titles and abstracts below. "The ontological foundation of Pletho’s virtue ethics" by Bogdan Mićić The short but dense treatise /Perì aretôn/ 'On Virtues' is not the only work in which Pletho deals with moral-philosophical topics and questions, but it is indeed the work in which Pletho presents and develops his moral philosophy in the most systematic way. There is surprising amount of literature which has been written and published since the 1840s about Pletho's life and work. However, only a small part of the otherwise relatively rich secondary literature is dedicated to Plethonic ethics and an even smaller part wo the work /Perì aretôn/, while the largest part is dealing with Pletho’s theology and metaphysics. One reason (though, probably not the only one) for this is that Pletho's (moral) philosophy, especially at first glance, hardly has any originality. Further, it seems to be affected by a profound eclecticism, which makes Plethon's ethics seem more like a disjointed piecemeal: Different, sometimes even seemingly incompatible, thoughts of various thinkers appear. A universal principle which could unify the scattered thoughts seems to be lacking. In short, Pletho’s ethics, at first glance, does not seem like a coherent theory. The eclectic features of Pletho’s moral philosophy has led some researchers to accuse Pletho of arbitrariness or a lack of critical reflection in advance. This is wrong. I venture out to show that Pletho’s moral philosophy is not a more or less arbitrary 'catalogue' of virtues collected without adhering to an overarching principle and to show that this view is short-sighted and excessive. To prove this, I will first show that the Plethonic doctrine of virtue is thoroughly determined by a unifying principle that underpins the theory. I will then identify this principle as the ontological-metaphysical requirement for every being to adhere to the specific ontological hierarchy. From this it will follow that it is possible to draw conclusions about Pletho's ontology starting from his doctrine of virtues (since the latter follows from the former). This will prove that the relative neglect of treatise /Perì aretôn/ by previous researchers is inappropriate not only in a historical respect (/Perì aretôn/ was the most distributed and cited work out of Pletho’s texts in his time), but also in a systematic respect: Because /Perì aretôn/ provides remarkable insights in Pletho's ontology, Plethon's doctrine of virtues should also be read and worked on also and especially by people who are only interested in his theoretical philosophy. In my talk, I will illustrate this by giving a detailed interpretation of the first 14 lines of the text (/Peri aret/. A 1, 1.1–16). "Aristotle’s Systematic Essentialism" by Philipp Quell: Although many of Aristotle’s scientific findings are revised, for example the geocentric thesis, his understanding of scientific structures and the criteria for them to be able to discover truth is still very similar to our scientific world. My thesis and argumentation will focus on the Aristotelian system of sciences, mainly elaborated in his logical writings. Within this argumentation one fundamental difference will be found, too and I am excited to hear your opinon about the fundamentality of this difference. The presentation will take place in Hörsaal 3A (NIG, Universitätsstraße 7, 3.Stock) at 13:30and will last up to sixty minutes. Call for Papers (Deadline November 30, 2023) Paul Feyerabend and Austrian Philosophy - His Formative Years in Postwar Vienna International Conference - July 5-6, 2024 - University of Vienna, Campus, Court 1 https://www.pkfcentennial.org/ Paul K. Feyerabend (1924-1994), one of the most stimulating and controversial figures of Twentieth-Century philosophy, spent most of his formative years in postwar Vienna (1946-1955). Born in Red Vienna, Feyerabend came of age at the time of the Nazi Anschluss and completed his philosophical apprenticeship at the University of Vienna during the Allied occupation. At the time of his university studies in philosophy and physics, Feyerabend animated the so-called “Third Vienna Circle” (1949-1953) around Viktor Kraft in the context of the Austrian College Society, and actively participated in the European Forum Alpbach and in the Institut für Wissenschaft und Kunst. In addition, he served as a research assistant to Arthur Pap, who spent 1953/54 as a Fulbright visiting professor at the University of Vienna. The international conference “Paul Feyerabend and Austrian Philosophy” aims at exploring the milieu which shaped Feyerabend’s intellectual development with a focus on his interaction with university teachers and intellectual figures such as members of the former Vienna Circle like Viktor Kraft, Philipp Frank, Herbert Feigl, and Rudolf Carnap, physicists like Felix Ehrenhaft and Walter Thirring, as well as with Walter Hollitscher and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Contacts continued throughout the 1950s and 1960s at the London School of Economics with Karl Popper and, later, with Imre Lakatos, and in Minneapolis, at Feigl’s Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science, where Feyerabend published his pathbreaking “Against Method” for the first time in 1970. A special symposium on the publication of Feyerabend’s Formative Years, edited by Matteo Collodel and Eric Oberheim (Springer Nature, two volumes) will be held as part of this conference. The conference is organized by the Institute Vienna Circle (University of Vienna) and by the Vienna Circle Society. It is partnered with the subsequent HOPOS 2024, the Fifteenth International Congress of the International Society for the History of Philosophy of Science, University of Vienna, July 8-12, 2024, and it contributes to the Feyerabend 2024 Centennial celebrations. Dear All, The Institute Vienna Circle and the APSE group are jointly organizing a talk by ... Prof. Anjan Chakravartty (University of Miami) on "Humanism and the Aim of Science: Past, Present, Future" Time and Location: Thursday, July 6th, 3-5pm, NIG HS 2G Abstract: Humanism, conceived as a worldview, and science, conceived as a form (or family of forms) of inquiry into the world, have been entangled with one another across a long sweep of intellectual history. I consider their co-evolution as a prelude to the present, briefly reviewing formative aspects of Renaissance humanism and deepening associations of values central to the Enlightenment with precursors to modern science, en route to an arguably peculiar situation today. Where past conceptions of the aim of science (natural philosophy, etc.) seem intimately connected to the idea of fashioning a better world, contemporary philosophy seems largely devoid of normative discussions of what science itself is for, exactly. I conclude with some reflections on a possible return to a humanist conception of the role and promise of science. Everyone welcome! Best, Martin Kusch

Abstract: In this chapter, I argue that the principal philosophic depth of Hilary Putnam’s dissolution of the fact/value dichotomy (FVD) is neither sourced in his argument that theory selection always presupposes values, nor in his argument that there is entanglement of fact and value in our use of thick ethical concepts. Rather, the principal philosophic depth mainly resides in Putnam’s charge that mainstream analytic philosophical circles often fetishize (scientific) naturalism. Putnam’s anti-scientism, more so than either of his entanglement theses, provides his readers with reason to regard FVD as a type of ideology. Because of its status as an ideology, and as therefore in the business of hegemonic sense-making, FVD is made sense of as a real threat to inquiry, insofar as FVD renders inquiry undemocratic by valorizing simplicity over complexity, cleanliness over messiness, dry deserts over lush landscapes. Putnam’s own ‘post-analytic’ pragmatist position never ostensibly espoused any critical theoretic attitude toward modernity – let alone formulated Ideologiekritik. Nevertheless, I think his 21st-century articulations of his conceptual pluralism may be said to display more resonance with the decolonial concept of epistemic disobedience than with a ‘post-analytic’ tradition Putnam himself explicitly endorsed in his final decade: liberal naturalism. I conclude that even though Putnam’s anti-scientistic defence of mathematically recalcitrant phenomena may be more radical than liberal naturalist defences of such phenomena, Putnam should be viewed as ultimately more epistemically mischievous than epistemically disobedient. Thu Dec. 14th, 2023, 6:30 p.m. in HS 3D (NIG) For questions, contact sophie.kroiss(a)univie.ac.at Abstract: The thought that there are cultural landmarks which have universal value is a familiar one. It is at the heart of UNESCO's and the World Heritage's mission, and is affirmed in a number of international declarations, not least the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. For all its appeal, UNESCO's ideals raise some deep concerns. In particular, it is not easy to articulate an account of universal value; and it is not easy to show why we are under moral obligations in respect of that heritage. Nevertheless, I attempt to defend those ideals. I seek to show that the protection of humankind's heritage, qua humankind's, not only is a moral imperative: more strongly put, it is a duty of justice. I then address one of the most important objections to it - namely that it undermines states’ and their citizenries’ legitimate interest in deciding what to do with landmarks which are located on their territory. /Cecile Fabre a political philosopher, and currently Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. She is also Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Oxford, and affiliated with the Faculty of Philosophy, the Department of Politics and International Relations, and Nuffield College, Oxford. Her research interests are in theories of distributive justice; the philosophy of democracy; just war theory; the ethics of foreign policy, with particular focus on the ethics of economic statecraft and the ethics of espionage. His Physics was considered by the protagonists of the “Scientific Revolution” as a sterile system; the idea that there is no place for an Aristotelian perspective in science was, subsequently, reinforced by the development of Newtonian mechanics. Against this traditional view, the lecture seeks to show that Aristotle’s conception of nature is one of his most fruitful ideas, and that the insights gained from Aristotle’s work are becoming increasingly relevant to contemporary science. Furthermore, the lecture argues that, in the light of the impressive discoveries in numerous fields of science, especially in physics, a closer look at Aristotle’s work will reveal that the Stageirite has elaborated a dynamic model of nature, which is much closer than Newtonian physics to the new scientific image of nature emerging today. At the same time, Aristotle’s insights into the inter-relation of all disciplines and the unity of knowledge can respond to the growing need for a re-unification of the various sciences through an interdisciplinary approach. Demetra Sfendoni-Mentzou is Professor Em. of Philosophy of Science, the founding and current President of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Aristotle Studies, Aristotle University Thessaloniki, Greece, and Fellow of the Charles S. Peirce Society. She served as President of the Greek Philosophical Society (2006–08) and the Charles Sanders Peirce Society (2014–15). Her research focus on the importance of Aristotle’s thought for the current sciences is documented in her studies on Quantum Mechanics, Microphysics and the Bio-Sciences. She edited Aristotle and Contemporary Science (two volumes, 2000/2001) and Aristotle–Contemporary Perspectives on his Thought (2018). Furthermore, she demonstrated how the philosophy of American Pragmatism relates to Aristotle’s thinking. As President of the C. S. Peirce Society she chaired the “Charles S. Peirce International Centennial Congress,” Lowell, Massachusetts (2014). Most importantly, she initiated, organized and chaired the “World Congress Aristotle 2400 Years” Thessaloniki 2016, under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic, and edited the Proceedings of that Congress (2019). Currently, Prof. Sfendoni-Mentzou is establishing a joint Greek-Chinese research program that was initiated at the international “Aristotle-Confucius Symposium on Ethics for the 21st Century” that she co-organized in July 2023. The Leibniz Lectures, as part of the Academy Lectures of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, refer to the fact that Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz presented the first plans for a „Society of Sciences in Vienna“ to the Emperor during his time in Vienna in 1712–1714. Parliamentary Research: Save the Date 2024 - Conference Report 2023

Dear colleagues, since end of September, the documentation of the first “Day of Parliamentary Research” (2023) is available online (currently only in German) under: Tag der Parlamentsforschung 2023: Tagungsbericht | Parlament Österreich <https://www.parlament.gv.at/fachinfos/rlw/Tag-der-Parlamentsforschung-2023-…>. It includes the presentation slides of keynote speaker Marc Geddes (see: Tag-der-Parlamentsforschung-2023-Keynote-Marc-Geddes.pdf <https://www.parlament.gv.at/dokument/fachinfos/parlamentsforschung/Tag-der-…>) as well as almost all the other presentations and posters. On this occasion, we are delighted to make the following announcements: -The next “*Day of Parliamentary Research*” will take place on *20 June 2024*. The according call for contributions will probably be published in January 2024. -The call for applications for the annual “*Research Year in Parliament*” is expected to be published in December 2023. The programme *supports a one-year research project* with expertise and resources from the Austrian Parliamentary Administration. Applications will be accepted *in English and German*. -Currently, *not* all contents about our initiatives concerning parliamentary research are *available in English yet*.
