*Workshop: "What difference does 'being' make? **The role of the verb
εἰμί in the clause and its manifestation in **philosophical discourse"*
Historians of ancient Greek philosophy often lack the necessary
knowledge to understand the strange expressions of the philosophers they
study. Moreover, ancient Greek philosophers sometimes use such
expressions as technical terms, as is the case with those that contain
the verb εἰμί 'am' (≈ to be).
Following philosophers like Frege and Russell, historians of ancient
philosophy usually approach the semantics of "being" from a logical
point of view, showing more interest in the logical operations behind
εἰμί-sentences than in the function of the verb εἰμί within the clause.
If one surveys the philosophical literature, one will find countless
mentions of the 'is' of "existence", the 'is' of "predication", or the
'is' of "identity", but hardly any mention of the difference between
lexical verbs and auxiliary verbs―and copulas are auxiliaries for
predication.
To compensate for these deficiencies, we have set out to bring together
nine distinguished experts in Ancient Greek to hear what they have to
say about the verb εἰμί and its role in the clause. The idea is to learn
from them so that we do not overlook important linguistic matters when
we approach ancient Greek philosophy. For we must not forget that Greek
philosophers coined both logical and ontological terms in natural
language, that is, in Ancient Greek.

Lecture: "The Name of the Verb: On the Persistence of the Aristotelian
View of the Copula in
Formal Syntax"
We are pleased to invite you to the in-person lecture "The Name of the
Verb: On the Persistence of the Aristotelian View of the Copula in
Formal Syntax", which will take place on December 5, 2023
(Marietta-Blau-Saal, University of Vienna, Main Building).
Professor Andrea Moro will speak about the validity of the Aristotelian
interpretation of the verb "to be" in formal syntax.
*The Name of the Verb*
Beginning with the early works of Aristotle, the interpretation of the
verb "to be" and its equivalents across languages runs through Western
linguistic thought intertwining with philosophy, metaphysics, logic, and
even mathematics―so much so that Bertrand Russell showed no hesitation
in proclaiming it to be "a disgrace to the human race". Professor Moro
will show that this verb is still a scandal and, like a Trojan horse of
linguistics, it introduces disruptive elements that lead us to a radical
rethinking of the most basic structure of human language, the sentence,
paradoxically reviving Aristotle's original view.

Hi everyone,
We cordially invite you to the next doc:wip, taking place next Monday
from 13:30 to 15:00
Andrew Tedder (Institute Vienna Circle) will be presenting on:
Pluriplenitudinous Platonism
Abstract: I discuss a view in philosophy of mathematics which combines
realism with a robust pluralism, admitting a range of structures,
following Mark Balaguer's Plenitudinous Pluralism, but going more
broadly in admitting inconsistent and other odd structures. In this work
in progress, I sketch the view, as well as my reasons for wanting to
adopt it.

Dear all,
The Knowledge in Crisis<https://philosophy.ceu.edu/knowledge-crisis-project> Cluster of Excellence is hosting its first public event on AI and the Problems of Knowledge this November 16th.
Event Description:
Artificial Intelligence is in the process of transforming our society. But it also has profound implications for our methods of knowledge production and consumption. The products of recent AI machines like ChatGPT are linguistically impressive and convincing - but they are also full of factual errors which their creators euphemistically (and misleadingly) call 'hallucinations'. Given the extent to which we are starting to rely on AI, the question arises: how can we trust any of its outputs? How do we know what to believe? Is this is technical problem or a social and epistemological one? Technology is also beginning to change our conception of knowledge itself. If someone asks you whether you know a friend's phone number, you may say yes and reach for your phone. Do you really know it in this situation? And if so, what does this say about the concept of knowledge?
These and other questions will be introduced in a public discussion, the first public event of the Knowledge in Crisis Cluster of Excellence.
The discussion will be moderated by Professor Tim Crane, Director of Research for the Knowledge in Crisis Project, and the author of the leading textbook on the philosophy of mind and AI, The Mechanical Mind (first edition 1995, third edition 2014).
This event is open to all. Please register here: https://events.ceu.edu/2023-11-16/ai-and-problems-knowledge
Looking forward to seeing many of you there!
Warmly,

Central European University is offering a summer course on
“Contemporary Issues in Ontology and Social Ontology [1]”. The
course will be held July 17th to July 28th, 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.
The faculty includes Mark Balaguer (Cal State LA), Talia Bettcher (Cal
State LA), Åsa Burman (Stockholm), Esa Díaz-León (Barcelona), Alex
Grzankowski (Birkbeck), Ferenc Huoranszki (CEU), Michaela McSweeney
(Boston), and Asya Passinsky (CEU).
Course description: Philosophers are becoming increasingly interested in
real-world problems and in how their discipline is relevant to these
problems. The recent explosion of interest in social ontology is part of
a movement in philosophy to come down out of the ivory tower and engage
with issues that actually matter—issues concerning, e.g., race,
gender, and social justice. This course will introduce students to
ontology, and to social ontology in particular, by delving deeply into
numerous important issues in the field. Specific topics to be covered
in the course include the following: social justice, social
construction, groups, social structures, ideal vs. non-ideal social
ontology, social power, essentialism as it relates to social groups and
genders, metaphysical grounding in the social realm, issues pertaining
to mental health and moral responsibility, social theories of art,
rationality, and mental content, and issues in meta social ontology.
We invite applications from graduate students, postdocs, and faculty in
philosophy. A few places for advanced undergraduate students will also
be available. The application deadline is February 14th, 2023.
For more information and details on how to apply, please visit the
course website [1].

home institutions or with extramural funding or other outside support,
though for the 2024-25 academic year, the Institute is able to provide a
monthly stipend of $2,000 for junior scholars visiting without
sabbatical or extramural funding of their own.
All Fellows receive cost-free housing in an NYU studio apartment and
round-trip travel to and from New York, and are provided with a private
office and modest administrative support during their residency at the
Institute. At NYU, Remarque visiting fellows have access to NYU library
and other university resources and privileges.
We are particularly interested in applications from individuals whose
work will be significantly enabled by a period of residency at the
Institute. Normally, fellowship applicants must have a PhD in hand at

While our housing is intended for visiting scholars, we do offer a
limited number of fellowships per semester to those currently residing
in New York, which include office space, NYU affiliation, and some

The possibility of dual use and misuse of research results ("dual use

Dear all,
I want to share with you the freshly published call for papers for the
Midlands Conference of Critical Thought 2024, which will take place at
Nottingham Trent University on April 5th and 6th, 2024. The MCCT is an
offshoot of the London Conference in Critical Thought, more info to be
found here: https://www.londoncritical.co.uk/.
Together with Sonja Riegler, who is, like me, a prae-doc at our
institute, I am hosting a stream as part of the Critical Political
Epistemology Network (Find us here:
https://cpenetwork.editorx.io/home/). Maybe not so surprisingly, our
stream focuses on Critical Political Epistemology. We are excited for
your proposals!
Apart from that, there is an array of different streams that might be
interesting to many of you!
Please also share the call with those you think could be interested.
All the best & looking forward to your ideas,

Dear Colleagues,
The Reading Circle of the Research Group "Poststructuralism, Gender

you to the next public event:
Alexis Shotwell (Carleton University Ottawa): "Working or playing at
freedom"
Friday, October 20th 2023, 6-8pm, Hörsaal 2G (NIG), Department of
Philosophy (and online)
Lecture and Discussion
Abstract: Ursula Le Guin thinks of freedom as an ongoing process, a
practice rather than an achievement, something to be worked on rather
than won. While our freedom can be stolen from us, in her work, it
cannot be given to us: we each must manifest it through our unique,
specific lives. Such freedom, she argues, is only really available in
societies organized around justice and mutual aid. It does not fully
exist yet. Perhaps along the way to social relations not organized to
benefit some and oppress many, practicing freedom can open more
possibilities for us individually and for our collective worlds. Because
the work of creating such freedom is ongoing, Le Guin and others
conceive of freedom as something we build in an ongoing way - we never
stop working on it. The worry about such a accounts: They may reinforce
ableist and productivist normative commitments that bolster capitalist
value structures. In this paper, I elaborate those worries, and think
with Le Guin and others about the connections among freedom, the idea
that we each have worth in virtue of our uniqueness, and the promise of
idle play as a form of creating beauty.
Alexis Shotwell is a professor at Carleton University, on unceded
Algonquin territory. She is the co-investigator for the AIDS Activist
History Project, and author of _Knowing Otherwise: Race, Gender, and
Implicit Understanding _and _Against Purity: Living Ethically in
Compromised Times_.

*IWM Lectures in Human Sciences with Seyla Benhabib*
The intense interest in cosmopolitanism in the social and political
sciences, cultural and legal studies dates back to the last two decades
of the twentieth century. With the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the
reunification of Germany, and the extension of the European Union to
east and central European countries formerly under Communist rule, the
Kantian cosmopolitan ideal of uniting diverse countries under the rule
of law, respect for human rights and the free exchange of goods and
services seemed to come alive. By the beginning of the new century,
cosmopolitanism had fallen on hard times. This series will defend
cosmopolitanism from below by engaging with the postcolonial critiques
of Kantian thought, voiced by James Tully, Inez Valdez, Sylvia Wynter,
and Walter Mignolo. The three lectures bearing the overarching title
"The Changing Fortunes of Cosmopolitanism: Demos, Cosmos and Globus"
will be held on 5, 11, and 19 October 2023 at the University of Vienna*.
For more information and to register, please see here
<https://www.iwm.at/event/part-i-the-changing-fortunes-of-cosmopolitanism-de…>.
*
*Seyla Benhabib*has held appointments at Yale, Columbia, and Harvard, in
addition to numerous visiting professorships around the world. Among her
many publications are Exile, Statelessness, and Migration. Playing Chess
with History from Hannah Arendt to Isaiah Berlin (2018), Another
Cosmopolitanism (2006), The Claims of Culture (2003), and The Rights of
Others (2004). Her work has been translated into twelve languages.
Benhabib is currently Albert Hirschman Fellow at the Institute for Human
Sciences.
The lecture series is organized in cooperation with the Departments of
Philosophy, Sociology, Political Science, and Anthropology at the
University of Vienna.

Islands of Resilience – Public Philosophy for the Future
We are currently living in a situation that can be described as a polycrisis: From the effects of the climate crisis, to unstable financial and economic developments, war and pandemics, to technological upheavals in the world of work and our educational institutions. Technology has an ambivalent role to play here. On the one hand, its use contributes to the crises, in some cases even creates them; on the other hand, technology is also at the heart of visions of a better, more egalitarian future.
Convinced of the relevance of a transdisciplinary and multi-layered approach to these complex phenomena, "Islands of Resilience" promotes collaboration between scientists, artists, activists and other social actors. The aim of the project is to go beyond the critique of existing conditions and to create visions for a desirable future as well as to develop ways to make them explicit.
We want to contribute to the process of finding answers to the questions: How do we navigate together towards sustainable communities? After the rejection of the internet revolution, which technologies can be carriers of emancipatory political visions today and help us to overcome crises, and how do we work towards better socio-technical systems? What role can, and should science and art play with regard to the political aspects of technological upheavals? During the two days of the event, we will performatively inquire into the potentials of a public philosophy and explore the significance of collective imaginative processes and spaces in order to set impulses for breaking up and extending conventional structures in thinking about the future.

Guten Tag!
Das Center for Teaching and Learning veranstaltet am Do., 28.09.2023,
10:00-13:00h folgenden Kurs:
Geschlechtervielfalt in der Lehre
Wie kann ich ihr den ihr gebührenden Raum geben?
Trans, inter*, nichtbinär, divers, cis, Pronomenrunde, all gender toilet
... Nicht nur der Staat erkennt Geschlecht mittlerweile als vielfältig
an, auch an Universitäten kommt das Thema immer öfter auf. Aber was ist
Geschlecht bzw. Geschlechtervielfalt eigentlich? Was bedeuten Begriffe
wie trans, cis, nichtbinär etc.? In welchen Geschlechternormen bewege
ich mich selber? Wie kann ich trans_inter*nichtbinären Personen in
meiner Lehre respektvoll begegnen?

Georg Henrik von Wright acknowledged Eino Kaila and Ludwig Wittgenstein
as pivotal to his philosophical growth, reflecting his deep engagement
with Austrian philosophy from Mach to the Vienna Circle. His connection
with Wittgenstein, both as successor and literary heir, strongly shaped
his intellectual path. However, this should not overshadow his
individual accomplishments in fields like induction, deontic logic, and
ethics. His interactions with Austrian thinkers fit within the framework
of “Austrian Philosophy,” which potentially would have led him to study
under Viktor Kraft in Vienna instead of Cambridge if not for WWII.
In this lecture von Wright’s intellectual journey from pre-war Vienna to
the end of the 20th century will be illustrated, involving encounters
with the Vienna Circle and the Wittgenstein community in Austria. At the
end the question is raised whether Georg Henrik von Wright was a typical
analytic philosopher.
Professor Friedrich Stadler
Friedrich Stadler is retired Professor of History and Philosophy of
Science at the University of Vienna and is currently Permanent Fellow at
the Institute Vienna Circle, which he founded and headed until 2018. He
also acts as director of the Vienna Circle Society and as member of the
Commission for History and Philosophy of Science at the Austrian Academy
of Sciences.
He is the author of books on Ernst Mach and the Vienna Circle, editor
and co-editor of a book series covering Logical Empiricism, history and
philosophy of science, analytic philosophy, modern intellectual history
and more. He has served as President of the European Philosophy of
Science Association and of the Austrian Ludwig Wittgenstein Society.

The 'Rousseau' Annual Lecture and Conference are organised with the
support of the European Consortium for Political Research and the
Keele-Oxford-St Andrews Kantian (KOSAK) Research Centre.
The 'Jean-Jacques Rousseau' Annual Lecture and Conference usually take
place at the end of November (occasionally moved on the following year
in March). The previous Rousseau Annual Lectures were given by David
Owen (2021 - took place in November 2022), Jens Timmermann (2020 - took
place in April 2022), Adrian W. Moore (2019 - took place in July 2021),
Susan Shell (2018), Pauline Kleingeld (2017 - took place in March 2018),
Julian Savulescu (2016), Mark Timmons (2015 - took place in March 2016),
Howard Williams (2014), Adrian Piper (2013), Alan Montefiore (2012),
John Horton (2011 - took place in March 2012), Stephen Engstrom (2010),
Miranda Fricker (2009) and Giuseppina D'Oro (2008).
*Why the _Jean-Jacques Rousseau _lecture? We hereby celebrate the true
but very little known fact that Jean-Jacques Rousseau lived for a time
in Staffordshire. From 22 March 1766 to 1 May 1767 Rousseau lived in the
little Staffordshire village of Wootton. Rousseau had been invited to
England by David Hume with whom he soon afterwards quarrelled. He then
spent the next year in seclusion in Staffordshire writing the first
drafts of his Confessions. When he was not writing it is said that he
roamed the Staffordshire countryside in his Armenian costume studying
wild flowers. Many years after his departure the locals remembered 'Owd
Ross Hall', not just for his eccentricities but also for his gifts to
local charities. They believed he was a king in exile! (Stephen Leach -
