Digitale Öffentlichkeiten, Grenzen der Redefreiheit und Ethik der Verletzbarkeit“ Dienstag 17. Jänner 2023, 18:30 Hörsaal 41 Gerda-Lerner Hauptgebäude, 1.Stock, Stiege 8 <https://uspace.univie.ac.at/web/gast/rauminfo/raumdetails/-/raumdetails/3441> Der Vortrag kann auch über Zoom gehört werden. „Wenn der Troll den Laden kauft“ – so betitelte Alexander Demling, der Silicon-Valley-Korrespondent des SPIEGEL Anfang April 2022 einen Artikel über das Vorhaben des Tesla-Gründers und Tech-Milliardärs Elon Musk, die Plattform Twitter zu kaufen. Im Zentrum der öffentlichen Debatte zu diesem aufsehenerregenden Investment stand einmal mehr eine Meinungsfreiheit, die es unbedingt zu retten gelte. Der Vortrag problematisiert die Differenz von Hassrede und Redefreiheit im Kontext digitaler Teilöffentlichkeiten und zeigt ihre komplexen Bedingungskonstellationen und Voraussetzungen auf. Auf dieser Grundlage werden anhand aktueller Ereignisse Herausforderungen mit Blick auf die Regulierung digitaler Zeichen diskutiert. Mit der Einführung einer Ethik der Verletzbarkeit im digitalen Zeitalter wird eine alternative Perspektive vorgeschlagen, die sich jenseits der Verteidigung einer entgrenzten Redefreiheit wie auch einer konsensuellen Regulierung digitaler Zeichen bewegt. Jennifer Eickelmann ist Juniorprofessorin für Digitale Transformation in Kultur und Gesellschaft an der FernUniversität in Hagen. Zuvor war sie wiss. Mitarbeiterin am Lehrgebiet für Soziologie mit dem Schwerpunkt Soziale Ungleichheit und Gleichstellungsbeauftragte der Fakultät Sozialwissenschaften an der TU Dortmund. 2017 promovierte sie am Institut für Medienwissenschaft der Ruhr-Universität Bochum mit einer Arbeit zur Materialität mediatisierter Missachtung. The aim of this workshop is to help students who are interested in pursuing their PhD in Philosophy and those applying for funded positions with preparing their applications. Our panellists, Prof. Dr. Paulina Sliwa and Prof. Dr. Hans Bernhard Schmid, will be sharing their experiences and strategies for writing research proposals and preparing and evaluating graduate applications in general. We will focus on issues such as how to write a good research proposal, how to prepare your graduate application, how such proposals and applications are evaluated, and so on. Call for Applications (Deadline: March 15, 2023) Climate Science: Historical, Philosophical and Sociological Issues univie: summer school Scientific World Conceptions (USS-SWC) Vienna, July 1019, 2023 Since 2001, the University of Vienna and the Institute Vienna Circle hold an annual summer school dedicated to major current issues in the natural and the social sciences, their history and philosophy. The title of the program reflects the heritage of the Vienna Circle which promoted interdisciplinary and philosophical investigations based on solid disciplinary knowledge. Climate science, understood as an interdisciplinary field of study of the Earths climate and the causes and effects of climate change, is clearly of central importance today. The summer school will explore climate studies from a historical, philosophical, and sociological perspective. Topics to be covered will include: foundations and methodological issues relating to climate science, including various definitions of climate change, different types of models of climate change, and the use of simulations; further, historical roots and the development of climate science before and after the computer age; finally, issues concerning science policy and the communication of findings of climate science to a general public. George (Mumbai): The Disrupted Self: Madness, Modernity and Context* Phenomenological accounts associate ill conditions of the psyche/soul with disturbance in its habitual ways of being in the world (Heidegger) or disruptions of the intentional arc (Merleau-Ponty) that envelops the body and connects it with the world. All illnesses involve varying degrees of disruptions of our embodied-enworlded way of being. However, because ill conditions of the psyche cannot be pinpointed to be located specifically in the body, cultural understandings of their meaning, character, and even reality have varied that much more starkly (Foucault). In this talk, my focus will be on how the disruptions of madness are looked at in India after the arrival of modern medicine, and how such an account could contribute to contextualize and decolonize psychopathology.

Geburtstag des Philosophen Peter Kampits. Im Audimax der Universität für Weiterbildung wurde der Geburtstag nachträglich gefeiert und eine Publikation als Überraschung an ihn übergeben. Nach den Begrüßungsworten von Departmentleiter Christian Hanus und dem Vorsitzenden Thomas Arthaber präsentierten die Programmkuratoren der WALDVIERTEL AKADEMIE Reinhard Linke und Christoph Mayer das Überraschungsgeschenk an Peter Kampits. Die beiden sind die Herausgeber einer Publikation von gesammelten Texten aus den vergangenen Jahren von Peter Kampits. Der Existenzialismusexperte und Medizinethiker, der in der Nähe von Krems wohnt, hat in der niederösterreichischen Bildungslandschaft seine Spuren hinterlassen. Bei der WALDVIERTEL AKADEMIE ist Peter Kampits Vorsitzender des wissenschaftlichen Beirates und bringt stets Ideen und Impulse für die Jahresprogramme des Vereins ein. Ehrenvorsitzender Ernst Wurz und Landesrätin Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister in Vertretung von Landeshauptfrau Johanna Mikl-Leitner hielten Laudationes zu Ehren des Philosophen. „Eigentlich sollte ich schweigen“, sagte Peter Kampits gerührt nach den Worten zuvor sowie der Übergabe des Buches und bedankte sich bei allen Mitwirkenden. Knapp 200 Gäste besuchten die Veranstaltung, die von Thomas Arthaber moderiert wurde. Die musikalische Umrahmung übernahmen Erich Rupp am Flügel und Werner Schulze am Kontrafagott. Die Publikation „Peter Kampits. Zum 80. Geburtstag des Philosophen“ ist im Verlag Edition Donau-Universität Krems erschienen und eine Kooperation der Universität für Weiterbildung und der WALDVIERTEL AKADEMIE.

Zeitdiagnosen aus der Perspektive feministischer Gesellschaftstheorie Bereits vor der COVID-19-Pandemie, der Gefahr eines atomaren Krieges und des ebenso realen Szenarios, dass einige Kipppunkte im Klimawandel überschritten werden, war die Gegenwart durch eine „multiple Krise“ gekennzeichnet. Zugleich verdichten sich aktuell in großer Geschwindigkeit die Krisen. Der Vortrag analysiert vier zentrale Krisendimensionen unserer Gegenwart aus der Perspektive feministischer Gesellschaftstheorie und interpretiert diese als Ausdruck einer in_visiblen Grundstruktur moderner Gesellschaften: der gewaltförmigen Strukturierung des Sozialen. Zugleich geht der Vortrag vergeschlechtlichten und rassifizierten Techniken der Invisibilisierung nach, die zur Verleugnung der grundlegenden Gewalt beitragen. Auf dieser Gegenwartsdiagnose aufbauend wird schließlich für eine Geschlechterforschung plädiert, die zur Überwindung der in_visibilisierten Gewaltstrukturen beitragen möchte. Gundula Ludwig ist Professorin für Sozialwissenschaftliche Theorien der Geschlechterverhältnisse an der Universität Innsbruck und Leiterin der Forschungsplattform Center Interdisziplinäre Geschlechterforschung Innsbruck. The book quickly became one of the most influential philosophical works of the twentieth century, reshaping thought on logic, language, and metaphysics, as well as affecting approaches in the philosophy of science, ethics, and even mysticism. Its impact spread to disciplines like Psychology and Linguistics, and, being also a remarkable literary achievement, the book has attracted the interest of artists and literary critics as well. To note the centenary of this Tractatus publication, the CEU Philosophy Department hosts an event which will include both a survey of the background and achievements of the Tractatus by the eminent Wittgenstein scholar, Peter Hacker; a talk on the logic of the Tractatus by Martin Pilch; and a talk on the book's ethics by Ilse Somavilla. Intercultural and Decolonial Approaches to the Phenomenon of Mental Illness A cooperation between WIGIP, IWK and the Department of Philosophy at the University of Vienna INVITATION ►30.11., 18.30 (6:30 pm CET), Institut für Wissenschaft und Kunst (Berggasse 17, 1090 Vienna) · Lecture in English · please register under: office(a)wigip.org (the registration is not mandatory, but helpful for the organization) Dr. Susannah Deane (University of Bristol, UK): Mind, Body, Spirits: Tibetan Notions of the ‘Subtle Body’ and its Implications for the Causation and Treatment of Mental Illness Integral to Tibetan understandings of mind and body, and humans’ relation to the wider world, are two key concepts. Firstly, the notion of loong – ‘wind’ energy which circulates through the body as a key component of the ‘subtle body’ system – is fundamental to Tibetan understandings on mind-body structure and functioning, particularly in relation to the mind and consciousness. Secondly, the relationship between humans and the wide variety of spirits and deities seen to populate the landscape is important in understanding Tibetan notions of health and good fortune. Both are predicated on an understanding of a rather ‘porous’ boundary between the self and the outer world, and within this, Buddhism provides not only a way to manage these local spirits and deities, but also designs practices which utilise this subtle body system to manipulate the mind and body towards enlightenment. All of these factors become key when we explore Tibetan notions of mental health and illness. Where spirits and deities may be implicated in the causation of madness and other illnesses and misfortunes, they can also be controlled by skilled Buddhist practitioners, who may even utilise them in their Tantric practices in their pursuit of enlightenment. Equally, while the manipulation of bodily wind currents forms an integral part of Tantric practitioners’ Buddhist practices, unintended disruptions in their flow – including as a result of conducting such practices incorrectly – is seen to have implications for an individual’s mental health. This paper explores the diverse understandings of causation and treatment of ‘madness’ and other mental health difficulties which result from these Tibetan notions of mind, body, and spirits.

[Call for Papers] Democracy and Radical Imagination: Castoriadis Revisited

Mit besten Grüßen Sergej Seitz Call for Papers Democracy and Radical Imagination: Castoriadis Revisited International Workshop University of Vienna, Department of Political Science May 25-26, 2023 Organized by Sara Gebh & Sergej Seitz | ERC Research Project Prefiguring Democratic Futures That democracy is in crisis is a truism today. In recent years, many commentators have identified the disintegration of truth and facts as the core threat to democratic societies, and accordingly call for restoring our political sense of reality. In turn, this workshop proceeds from the conviction that we face at least as severe a crisis of our political sense of possibility: a crisis of political imagination. It has become increasingly difficult to even imagine democratic politics and democratic futurity differently, that is, significantly departing from the status quo of the minimal model of present, liberal western democracy. The infamous TINA dictum emblematically attests to the outright rejection of political creativity under the hegemony of neoliberal capitalism. While democratic creativity withers away, progressive change seems to be outsourced to the field of technology, in terms of planned and anticipable ‘innovation’. This is all the more fatal in times of ecological disaster, where democratic political action is increasingly challenged by calls for establishing ‘authoritarian environmentalism’, often accompanied with technocratic ideas of climate engineering. To explore paths for restoring and enlivening political imagination and our political sense of possibility, it seems apt to (re)turn to the work of Cornelius Castoriadis. Nearly half a century after the publication of his magnum opus The Imaginary Institution of Society (1975), it is not only time to take stock and evaluate the relevance and productivity of his political philosophy for present discussions. Rather, with his distinctive account of democracy as autonomous self-institution and his notion of radical imagination at the heart of the political, Castoriadis’s thought may deliver conceptual tools and theoretical frameworks that help foster new, radical democratic imaginaries. Against this background, the workshop proposes to revisit the work of Castoriadis in order to explore how, to what extent, and in which respects it can be utilized or updated for tackling the crisis of imagination. To this end, the workshop convenes interdisciplinary participants from philosophy, political science, and sociology, rallying around the main question of whether Castoriadis’s thinking allows us to establish a notion of democratic imagination and/or democratic imaginaries fit for the challenges of the present. Central Questions 1. Theorizing Democratic Imaginaries: Recently, there has been a lot of research on different types of imaginaries, as for instance the broad discourse on ‘socio-technical imaginaries’ in science and technology studies. Following Castoriadis, we propose to explore the notion of ‘democratic imaginaries’: What are the components of a democratic imaginary? How can a specifically democratic imaginary be distinguished from other kinds of political imagination? In what ways can a democratic imaginary be revived, and how does it have to be adapted, in times of (political, ecological, military, pandemic) crises? 2. Rethinking History as Creation: Based on Castoriadis’s critique of a Marxist theory of history, we invite contributions that investigate his view of history as ‘creation and destruction’. What is the role of the past in creating alternative visions of the future? How can we acknowledge history as made and always in-the-making without rendering its meaning fully contingent? What are the hidden potentials of conceiving the history of ideas, specifically, not as an unambiguous recounting of the past, but as a resource for keeping alive the self-instituting impulse of society? 3. Widening (Counter-)Institutional Imagination: Castoriadis decidedly opposes functionalist theories of political institutions. Instead of analyzing institutions merely in terms of their instrumental rationality and stabilizing function, he points us towards the ways in which institutions incorporate, reflect, and reproduce imaginary meanings. In this vein, we want to ask—empirically and theoretically—how both established institutions as well as activist counter-institutions constrain and expand the horizon of political imagination. What kinds of concrete institutions or institutional features widen our sense of possibility today? Format We strive towards creating a true workshop-atmosphere that allows for a serious, productive, and collaborative engagement with each other’s work. Workshop participants send in working papers (approx. 5000 words) in advance (deadline: April 30, 2023) and each participant prepares a commentary on one of the other papers. Each session begins with a brief opening statement by the author(s) on the background of the text (5 min), followed by a commentary (10 min) that opens the general discussion of the text. Venue and Accommodation The workshop will take place in-person at the University of Vienna. Online participation is not possible. There is no participation fee. The organizers are happy to give recommendations regarding travel arrangements. In individual cases, assistance with travel expenses may be provided. Publication We plan to publish the workshop’s proceedings as a special issue in a peer-reviewed journal and/or in an edited volume. Intercultural and Decolonial Approaches to the Phenomenon of Mental Illness* Organization: Cristina Chitu, Manu Sharma & Murat Ates A cooperation between WIGIP, IWK and the Department of Philosophy Lecture 11.11.2022, 6:30 pm, Location: Institut für Wissenschaft und Kunst (Berggasse 17, 1090 Vienna) *Mitha Karim (Edinburgh): Mental Health and Muslim Communities * Abstract: Within any culture, there are paradigmatic views of personal and communal experiences and understanding of social and natural phenomena. This includes frameworks of understanding what is viewed as “mental illness”. Whilst a sociopsychobio framework is largely the model used to address mental health and illness amongst allopathic practitioners, it is important to recognise that the lived experience and therefore the understanding of experiences by individuals is influenced by cultural frameworks. In relation to Muslims, conceptualisations of mental health and illness is often viewed and discussed in the literature in terms of “cultural formulations”, with an almost Other-ed approach in viewing traditional and spirito-cultural models of understanding mental health. That said, this approach neglects recognition of the diaspora of Muslim communities, that faith is practised across various cultural milieus and the therefore reductive nature of a monolithic approach, and that social and contextual factors can influence discourse on mental health. This talk discusses contemporary approaches and debates pertaining to “Muslim mental health” – noting common models of understanding of psychopathology, various frameworks and coping strategies, and problematises current approaches and whether they are adept/fit for Muslim communities. It also considers current movements to “decolonise” mental health from the Muslim framework, addressing intra-community debates pertaining to Muslim mental health, as well as problematising current approaches to addressing mental health needs amongst Muslim migrant communities.

Zum Buch: Amalia Rosenblüth wurde am 10. Mai 1892 in Sanok, Österreich-Ungarn, im heutigen Polen geboren. Sie war die älteste von vier Geschwistern und wuchs in einer wohlhabenden und bildungsfreundlichen Familie auf. Sie studierte in Lemberg und Wien Philosophie und dissertierte "Über das sogenannte disjunktive Urteil in der neueren Logik" bei Adolf Stöhr. Jahrelang arbeitete sie unbezahlt am Philosophischen Institut als Bibliothekarin sowie als Assistentin ihres Mentors und Doktorvaters. An eine Anstellung in der Lehre war für eine Frau zu jener Zeit und besonders in Wien nicht zu denken. Als wissenschaftliche Bibliothekarin hatte sie wenigstens die Möglichkeit, im universitären Umfeld zu arbeiten und sich zu vernetzen. Im Zuge der Neubesetzung der philosophischen Ordinariate 1922 mit Robert Reininger, Moritz Schlick und Karl Bühler organisierte sie die Neuaufstellung der Bibliothek und hielt auch Lehrveranstaltungen ab. Mit der Formierung des Wiener Kreises, der für Offenheit und Pluralismus stand, war Interdisziplinarität gefragt und mit ihr die Expertise zahlreicher Wissenschafter*innen. Amalia Rosenblüth zählte zu den bekannteren Frauen im Wissenschaftsbetrieb ihrer Zeit. Ist sie doch auch eine der Unterzeichner*innen eines Dankesschreibens an Schlick, als dieser sich entschloss, seinem Lehrstuhl in Wien treu zu bleiben. Ab 1937 verlor Rosenblüth ihre Anstellung an der Universität. Mit der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialist*innen wurden ihre Schwester, eine Freundin und deren Tochter, mit der sie zuletzt zusammenlebte, deportiert und ermordet. Sie selbst tauchte unter dem Decknamen Margarete Dengler unter. Erst 1947 emigrierte sie in die USA, wo sie als Bibliothekarin arbeitete, zunächst am Idaho State College und schließlich an der University of Washington in Seattle, wo sie bis zu ihrem 84. Lebensjahr verblieb, unter anderem auch als Mitarbeiterin des austro-amerikanischen Psychoanalytikers René A. Spitz. Eine Rückkehr an die Universität Wien scheiterte trotz vieler Fürsprecher*innen am Unwillen der Hochschulleitung. Dass es gerade und immer wieder Bibliotheken waren, in denen Frauen und Wissenschafter*innen einen Platz fanden, die aus der universitären Lehre ferngehalten wurden, ist ebenso tragisch wie bemerkenswert. Ohne akademische Anerkennung und Sichtbarwerdung blieb auch Amalia Rosenblüth und geriet darüber fast in Vergessenheit. Dem wirkt die Dokumentationsstelle Frauenforschung mit ihren Publikationen nun entgegen. *Pursuing MPhil/PhD studies in **Philosophy**at Lingnan University**, 2023-24 Intake*** I would like to bring to your attention a very attractive PhD programme that the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong has established, i.e. /Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)/, and it would be great if you could kindly help to share this information with your students and graduates who may be interested. The Scheme is aimed at attracting the best and brightest students from around the world to come for PhD studies in Hong Kong, and I very much hope to have one of yours pursuing this degree with us at Lingnan. Each Fellowship awardee will be provided with an annual stipend of HK$325,200* (approximately US$41,690) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,600* (approximately US$1,740) per year by the RGC. In addition, awardees’ full tuition fee for the first year of study will be waived by the University. Call for Submissions (DocWIP)

Dear Colleagues, With the start of the new semester, we would like to recommence our DocWIP Series and are now open to new submissions for talks! The doctoral work in progress seminar (DocWIP) is a regular event run by the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy (VDP), co-organized by Flora Löffelmann and Jackson Sawatzky. DocWIP provides an informal space for doctoral researchers to present ideas, receive comments, and socialize with their peers. It is designed to help build a close-knit doctoral community, in which researchers can benefit from each others' knowledge, support, and constructive criticism. Meetings typically take place on Wednesday afternoons, once a month, in Neues Institutsgebäude (NIG). For meeting links, email updates, or requests to take part, please contact Flora Löffelmann (flora.loeffelmann(a)univie.ac.at) or Jackson Sawatzky (jackson.sawatzky(a)univie.ac.at). Presentations can be given in either English or German. The projected dates for this semester are the 2nd of November, 30th of November, 11th of January, and 1st of February. Unless requested otherwise, the time will be 16:45 - 18:45. This will allow a maximum of 30-45 minutes for a presentation, a short break, and then time for a Q and A. Students preparing for their faculty presentation (FÖP) are also encouraged to present, as are masters students who wish to give a talk on their thesis or receive feedback on ideas for future doctoral research. We strongly encourage interlocutors and presenters from all areas of philosophy, and especially from underrepresented groups, to (regularly) attend these sessions. (for the English version see below) Interkulturelles Philosophieren: Theorie und Praxis Arbeitskreis der Wiener Gesellschaft für interkulturelle Philosophie Wintersemester 2022/2023 Dem Wahnsinn begegnen. Interkulturelle und dekoloniale Annäherungen an das Phänomen der psychischen Erkrankung Es war insbesondere das Paradigma einer Körper-Seele-Dichotomie, welche das Denken über Krankheiten im modernen Westen geprägt hat. Mit neueren Entwicklungen in den Natur- und vor allem den Neurowissenschaften wurden immer engere, kausal gedachte Verbindungen zwischen messbaren körperlichen Funktionen und geistigen Zuständen hergestellt. Das damit einhergehende Bild eines individualisierten Menschen, dessen psychisches Leiden einen objektivierbaren Grund haben muss, prägt bis heute den euro-amerikanischen Mainstream-Diskurs. Dies spiegelt sich nicht zuletzt im Aufstieg der Psychiatrie wider, aber auch den objektivierenden Spielarten der Psychotherapie, die zunächst den euro-amerikanischen Raum dominierten und mit der Moderne, dem (Neo-)Kolonialismus und dem (Kultur-)Imperialismus schließlich um die Welt gingen und gehen. Während sich der westliche Diskurs dabei weiterhin als universelle Wahrheit präsentiert, entlarven interkulturelle und dekoloniale Orientierungen gerade seine Provinzialität, indem sie nicht nur Kritik an der kulturellen Bedingtheit seiner epistemischen Voraussetzungen üben, sondern alternative Ansätze im Verständnis von psychischem Leid aufzeigen. So lassen sich in diversen Lebenspraxen und Lebenswelten rund um den Globus unterschiedliche philosophische Herangehensweisen auffinden, die das erlebte Leid sowohl der psychiatrischen Standardnosologie als auch der Binarität von Körper und Seele, Gesundheit und Krankheit, Vernunft und Wahnsinn entziehen. In diesem Sinne versteht sich das Anliegen dieser Vortragreihe als ein Versuch, das Mainstream-Verständnis von »psychischer Krankheit« zu befragen und den im globalen Kontext verdrängten Positionen eine Stimme zu verleihen. Es werden uns unter anderem folgende Fragen beschäftigen: Welche Rolle kam der Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie in den von Neo-Kolonialismen geprägten Gesellschaften zu? Um sich mit ihnen zu befassen, fragt man nach Prinzipien dieser Heilungsformen, Akteuren und institutionellen Einbindungen. Doch so einfach ist es häufig nicht, und es lohnt, an einem anderen Punkt des Heilungsgeschehens mit dem Fragen einzusetzen. In Südafrika hat die Professionalisierung afrikanischer Heilerinnen und Heiler eine lange Geschichte der Verhinderung. Gerade in den wachsenden Städten bemühten sich izangoma, izinyanga und andere Spezialisten gegenüber einem kolonialen Regime um offizielle Anerkennung durch die Behörden, die diese ihnen jedoch kontinuierlich versagten. Im Nationalarchiv werden zahlreiche Schreiben, selbst erstellte Lizenzen und Jahresberichte nicht anerkannter Heilerverbände aufbewahrt, die deren Selbstverständnis in den 1930er und 1940er Jahren dokumentieren, aber auch die Bereitschaft, sich den Behörden und geltenden Hierarchien im Sinne der Erhaltung von Ordnen geradezu „anzubiedern“. Als „traditionell“ bezeichneten sich diese Heilungsexpertinnen und -experten allerdings nicht. Auch die Behörden griffen auf diese Etikettierung nicht zurück. Sie war aber relevant in den Professionalisierungsbestreben nach dem Ende der Apartheid. Das Etikett des „Traditionellen“ (ebenso wie die Verurteilung als „Hexerei“, die in den 2000er Jahren die Diskussion um Professionalisierung erschwerte) verdeckt tendenziell die Historizität dieser Heilungsakteure und ihrer Praktiken. Der Blick ins Archiv und weitere Abbildungsorte (z.B. populäre Medien) stellen wichtige Schritte dar, den Blick auf izangoma, izinyanga und andere Heilende komplexer zu gestalten. This includes frameworks of understanding what is viewed as “mental illness”. Whilst a sociopsychobio framework is largely the model used to address mental health and illness amongst allopathic practitioners, it is important to recognise that the lived experience and therefore the understanding of experiences by individuals is influenced by cultural frameworks. In relation to Muslims, conceptualisations of mental health and illness is often viewed and discussed in the literature in terms of “cultural formulations”, with an almost Other-ed approach in viewing traditional and spirito-cultural models of understanding mental health. That said, this approach neglects recognition of the diaspora of Muslim communities, that faith is practised across various cultural milieus and the therefore reductive nature of a monolithic approach, and that social and contextual factors can influence discourse on mental health. This talk discusses contemporary approaches and debates pertaining to “Muslim mental health” – noting common models of understanding of psychopathology, various frameworks and coping strategies, and problematises current approaches and whether they are adept/fit for Muslim communities. Firstly, the notion of loong – ‘wind’ energy which circulates through the body as a key component of the ‘subtle body’ system – is fundamental to Tibetan understandings on mind-body structure and functioning, particularly in relation to the mind and consciousness. Secondly, the rela-tionship between humans and the wide variety of spirits and deities seen to populate the landscape is important in understanding Tibetan notions of health and good fortune. Both are predicated on an understanding of a rather ‘porous’ boundary between the self and the outer world, and within this, Buddhism provides not only a way to manage these local spirits and deities, but also designs practices which utilise this subtle body system to manipulate the mind and body towards enlightenment. All of these factors become key when we explore Tibetan notions of mental health and illness. Where spirits and deities may be implicated in the causation of madness and other illnesses and misfortunes, they can also be controlled by skilled Buddhist practitioners, who may even utilise them in their Tan-tric practices in their pursuit of enlightenment. Equally, while the manipulation of bodily wind cur-rents forms an integral part of Tantric practitioners’ Buddhist practices, unintended disruptions in their flow – including as a result of conducting such practices incorrectly – is seen to have implications for an individual’s mental health. George (Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Indien): The Disrupted Self: Madness, Modernity and Context “ Phenomenological accounts associate ill conditions of the psyche/soul with disturbance in its habitual ways of being in the world (Heidegger) or disruptions of the intentional arc (Merleau-Ponty) that envelops the body and connects it with the world. All illnesses involve varying degrees of disruptions of our embodied-enworlded way of being. However, because ill conditions of the psyche cannot be pinpointed to be located specifically in the body, cultural understandings of their meaning, character, and even reality have varied that much more starkly (Foucault). While it is crucial to understand and reframe our suppositions and assumptions, it is also just as crucial to examine the containers of our thought. Much of the work on Blackness and madness, indeed race and disability is largely done in monographs and edited collections. When the rest of the academy is slow to understand new work, tenured scholars tend to take on the work of announcing new fields with edited volumes. As an editor of three volumes, I plan to lay out a blueprint for how seasoned scholars can assist in bringing this new work to the fore. This talk desires to make practical and feasible the hard work of foregrounding new voices and changing the field. Así también, destacar las propuestas que articulan el activismo loco con la academia, validando el saber de los y las expertas por experiencia o sobrevivientes de la psiquiatría. Del mismo modo, reconocer la emergencia de epistemologías anticuerdistas que problematizan y denuncian el saber hegemónico de la salud mental occidental, el cual sistemáticamente viola los derechos humanos y psiquiatriza el malestar social de manera diferenciada y generizada. A su vez, pretendo analizar el vínculo y distancia del movimiento loco con la perspectiva descolonial y el pensamiento crítico; destacando cómo opera la colonialidad del poder cuerdista-desarrollista que sitúa a las personas de Latinoamérica cercano a la zona del no ser, por lo tanto, alejadas de la razón moderna, más cercanas a un estado de locura o naturaleza. Bajo esta interpretación develar cómo se entrelaza el cuerdismo, capacitismo, sexismo y racismo como ejes interseccionales en la producción binaria de normalidad-anormalidad en nuestras corporeidades, itinerarios y territorios, conformando otredades sin posibilidades de producir cultura y en una permanente deuda por llegar a ser “modernxs” y “civilizadxs”. Para finalizar, situar esta incipiente corriente de pensamiento dentro de los debates interdisciplinarios que se gestan en los estudios críticos de la discapacidad en Latinoamérica y, particularmente, en su expresión emergente de los estudios locos que dan cuenta de nuevas identidades y disputas por alcanzar un reconocimiento de sus luchas y avanzar hacia una transformación social. Intercultural Philosophizing: Theory and Practice Working Group of the Vienna Society for Intercultural Philosophy Winter semester 2022/2023 Encountering Madness. Intercultural and Decolonial Approaches to the Phenomenon of Mental Illness It was particularly the paradigm of a body-soul dichotomy that shaped thinking about illness in the modern West. With more recent developments in the natural and especially the neurosciences, in-creasingly close, causally conceived connections were made between measurable bodily functions and mental states. The accompanying image of an individualized human being whose mental suffer-ing must have an objectifiable cause continues to shape Euro-American mainstream discourse to this day. This is reflected not least in the rise of psychiatry but also in the objectifying varieties of psycho-therapy, which first dominated the Euro-American area and finally went and still go around the world with modernity, (neo-)colonialism and (cultural) imperialism. While Western discourse continues to present itself as universal truth, intercultural and decolonial orientations expose precisely its provinci-ality by not only criticizing the cultural conditionality of its epistemic presuppositions, but also pointing to alternative approaches in understanding psychological suffering. Thus, in diverse life practices and life-worlds around the globe, different philosophical approaches can be found that withdraw the experienced suffering from both the standard psychiatric nosology and the binarity of body and soul, health and illness, sanity and madness. In this sense, the concern of this lecture series is understood as an attempt to interrogate the main-stream understanding of "mental illness" and to give voice to positions that have been repressed in the global context. Questions we will consider include: What was the role of psychiatry and psychothera-py in societies shaped by neo-colonialisms? To what extent would they need to be transformed or even deconstructed today from an intercultural and/or decolonial perspective? Um sich mit ihnen zu befassen, fragt man nach Prinzipien dieser Heilungsformen, Akteuren und institutionellen Einbindungen. Doch so einfach ist es häufig nicht, und es lohnt, an einem anderen Punkt des Heilungsgeschehens mit dem Fragen einzusetzen. In Südafrika hat die Professionalisierung afrikanischer Heilerinnen und Heiler eine lange Geschichte der Verhinderung. Gerade in den wachsenden Städten bemühten sich izangoma, izinyanga und andere Spezialisten gegenüber einem kolonialen Regime um offizielle Anerkennung durch die Behörden, die diese ihnen jedoch kontinuierlich versagten. Im Nationalarchiv werden zahlreiche Schreiben, selbst erstellte Lizenzen und Jahresberichte nicht anerkannter Heilerverbände aufbewahrt, die deren Selbstverständnis in den 1930er und 1940er Jahren dokumentieren, aber auch die Bereitschaft, sich den Behörden und geltenden Hierarchien im Sinne der Erhaltung von Ordnen geradezu „anzubiedern“. Als „traditionell“ bezeichneten sich diese Heilungsexpertinnen und -experten allerdings nicht. Auch die Behörden griffen auf diese Etikettierung nicht zurück. Sie war aber relevant in den Professionalisierungsbestreben nach dem Ende der Apartheid. Das Etikett des „Traditionellen“ (ebenso wie die Verurteilung als „Hexerei“, die in den 2000er Jahren die Diskussion um Professionalisierung erschwerte) verdeckt tendenziell die Historizität dieser Heilungsakteure und ihrer Praktiken. Der Blick ins Archiv und weitere Abbildungsorte (z.B. populäre Medien) stellen wichtige Schritte dar, den Blick auf izangoma, izinyanga und andere Heilende komplexer zu gestalten. This includes frameworks of understanding what is viewed as “mental illness”. Whilst a sociopsychobio framework is largely the model used to address mental health and illness amongst allopathic practitioners, it is important to recognise that the lived experience and therefore the understanding of experiences by individuals is influenced by cultural frameworks. In relation to Muslims, conceptualisations of mental health and illness is often viewed and discussed in the literature in terms of “cultural formulations”, with an almost Other-ed approach in viewing traditional and spirito-cultural models of understanding mental health. That said, this approach neglects recognition of the diaspora of Muslim communities, that faith is practised across various cultural milieus and the therefore reductive nature of a monolithic approach, and that social and contextual factors can influence discourse on mental health. This talk discusses contemporary approaches and debates pertaining to “Muslim mental health” – noting common models of understanding of psychopathology, various frameworks and coping strategies, and problematises current approaches and whether they are adept/fit for Muslim communities. Firstly, the notion of loong – ‘wind’ energy which circulates through the body as a key component of the ‘subtle body’ system – is fundamental to Tibetan understandings on mind-body structure and functioning, particularly in relation to the mind and consciousness. Secondly, the rela-tionship between humans and the wide variety of spirits and deities seen to populate the landscape is important in understanding Tibetan notions of health and good fortune. Both are predicated on an understanding of a rather ‘porous’ boundary between the self and the outer world, and within this, Buddhism provides not only a way to manage these local spirits and deities, but also designs practices which utilise this subtle body system to manipulate the mind and body towards enlightenment. All of these factors become key when we explore Tibetan notions of mental health and illness. Where spirits and deities may be implicated in the causation of madness and other illnesses and misfortunes, they can also be controlled by skilled Buddhist practitioners, who may even utilise them in their Tan-tric practices in their pursuit of enlightenment. Equally, while the manipulation of bodily wind cur-rents forms an integral part of Tantric practitioners’ Buddhist practices, unintended disruptions in their flow – including as a result of conducting such practices incorrectly – is seen to have implications for an individual’s mental health. George (Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India): The Disrupted Self: Madness, Modernity and Context “ Phenomenological accounts associate ill conditions of the psyche/soul with disturbance in its habitual ways of being in the world (Heidegger) or disruptions of the intentional arc (Merleau-Ponty) that envelops the body and connects it with the world. All illnesses involve varying degrees of disruptions of our embodied-enworlded way of being. However, because ill conditions of the psyche cannot be pinpointed to be located specifically in the body, cultural understandings of their meaning, character, and even reality have varied that much more starkly (Foucault). While it is crucial to understand and reframe our suppositions and assumptions, it is also just as crucial to examine the containers of our thought. Much of the work on Blackness and madness, indeed race and disability is largely done in monographs and edited collections. When the rest of the academy is slow to understand new work, tenured scholars tend to take on the work of announcing new fields with edited volumes. As an editor of three volumes, I plan to lay out a blueprint for how seasoned scholars can assist in bringing this new work to the fore. This talk desires to make practical and feasible the hard work of foregrounding new voices and changing the field. Así también, destacar las propuestas que articulan el activismo loco con la academia, validando el saber de los y las expertas por experiencia o sobrevivientes de la psiquiatría. Del mismo modo, reconocer la emergencia de epistemologías anticuerdistas que problematizan y denuncian el saber hegemónico de la salud mental occidental, el cual sistemáticamente viola los derechos humanos y psiquiatriza el malestar social de manera diferenciada y generizada. A su vez, pretendo analizar el vínculo y distancia del movimiento loco con la perspectiva descolonial y el pensamiento crítico; destacando cómo opera la colonialidad del poder cuerdista-desarrollista que sitúa a las personas de Latinoamérica cercano a la zona del no ser, por lo tanto, alejadas de la razón moderna, más cercanas a un estado de locura o naturaleza. Bajo esta interpretación develar cómo se entrelaza el cuerdismo, capacitismo, sexismo y racismo como ejes interseccionales en la producción binaria de normalidad-anormalidad en nuestras corporeidades, itinerarios y territorios, conformando otredades sin posibilidades de producir cultura y en una permanente deuda por llegar a ser “modernxs” y “civilizadxs”. Para finalizar, situar esta incipiente corriente de pensamiento dentro de los debates interdisciplinarios que se gestan en los estudios críticos de la discapacidad en Latinoamérica y, particularmente, en su expresión emergente de los estudios locos que dan cuenta de nuevas identidades y disputas por alcanzar un reconocimiento de sus luchas y avanzar hacia una transformación social.

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the core concepts, questions, and theories in the philosophical study of ignorance. I further suggest that, while many of these topics were inherited by, and even helped to make, logical empiricism when its advocates later arrived in America, it neglected key topics, especially regarding idealisation, sociology and metaphysics. Finally, I suggest that this neglect was due to a logical empiricist dogma-specifically, epistemic conservatism-and might help to explain its quick demise as well, perhaps, as some of the persistent problems within analytic philosophy of science. Liebe Studierende der Philosophie, es ist wieder soweit. Die Semesterferien sind schon vorüber und der Herbst klopft an die Tür. Die Temperaturen sinken, zum Baden auf der Insel ist es längst schon zu kalt. Die Tage werden kürzer und man möchte sich mit guter Lektüre am liebsten den Abend schön machen. Was kommt denn da gelegener, als in Gesellschaft zu lesen? Ich möchte Euch gerne Einladen dem "Hippias Lesekreis" beizutreten. (Nicht zu verwechseln mit dem Hippies Lesekreis. Der ist glaube ich Samstags..) FAQs: Was ist Hippias? - Hippias ist ein Dialog von Platon, dem wir uns hier widmen werden. In dem Text ist Hippias der Gesprächspartner von Sokrates. Okay, also warum Hippias? - Es ist ein früher Dialog, der nicht sehr umfangreich ist. Es geht um grundsätzliche Fragen denen man sich niemals genug widmen kann. Obwohl die Fragen so alt sind, haben sie an Relevanz nichts eingebüßt. Alle, von Ersties bis zu PHD-Studierenden und darüber hinaus, sind willkommen! Warum überhaupt ein Lesekreis? - Es geht darum in der Gemeinschaft das Argumentieren zu üben. Jede Person soll einen sicheren Ort haben, an dem diskutiert werden darf. "Richtig" und "Falsch" sind keine Kriterien, nach denen hier beurteilt wird. Wir studieren und lernen gemeinsam mit- und voneinander am besten, wenn sich Alle richtig am Platze fühlen und dabei gerne einen Teil beitragen wollen. JACQUES RANCIÈRE IM GESPRÄCH MIT PETER ENGELMANN PASSAGEN GESPRÄCHE. FORUM FÜR NEUES POLITISCHES DENKEN Zeit der Landschaft. Die Anfänge der ästhetischen Revolution am 10. Oktober 2022, 20 Uhr im Schauspielhaus Wien Eintritt = 5,- Euro Parallel zur Französischen Revolution vollzieht sich im 18. Jahrhundert eine Revolution in der Ästhetik. Dabei spielt die Landschaft eine zentrale Rolle. Sowohl als Sujet der Bildenden Kunst als auch in Gestalt der Gartenkunst, die erstmals den Status einer eigenständigen Kunstform erhält, rückt sie ins Zentrum ästhetischer Diskurse. Für Jacques Rancière hat die Landschaft aber auch eine politische Dimension. Die ästhetische Gestaltung der Landschaft stellt einen Eingriff in den Lebensraum der Menschen dar, der Klassenunterschiede und soziale Hierarchien hervortreten lässt. Formen gemeinschaftlicher Landnutzung weichen im England des späten 18. Jahrhunderts den großen, kunstvoll gestalteten Gartenanlagen adeliger Landbesitzer:innen. Während die enteignete Landbevölkerung in die Städte übersiedeln muss, um sich dem industriellen Proletariat anzuschließen, tragen die Maler:innen und Gartengestalter:innen den politischen Konflikt auf ästhetischem Terrain aus. Der französische Garten als Symbol einer absolutistischen Ordnungsvorstellung trifft auf das romantische Ideal einer wilden und unberührten Landschaft. Auch heute, vor dem Hintergrund der Diskussion um das Anthropozän, birgt die Frage nach der Gestaltung von Landschaften politisches Konfliktpotenzial: Wie können inklusive Landschaften aussehen, in denen Mensch und Natur nachhaltig koexistieren können? Jahrestagung der Meister-Eckhart-Gesellschaft zum Thema "Meister Eckhart und die,Phänomenologie" 13.-15. Oktober 2022

Oktober 2022 Universität Wien, Aula am Campus, Hof 1.11 Spitalgasse 2, 1090 Wien Jahrestagung der Meister-Eckhart-Gesellschaft : Meister Eckhart und die Phänomenologie Über die Jahrhunderte hinweg ist der geistige Einfluss Meister Eckharts nicht nur im Bereich der Spiritualität und der Mystik wirksam geworden, sondern hat ebenso auch deutliche Spuren in der Philosophiegeschichte hinterlassen. Die unter internationaler Beteiligung organisierte Tagung stellt sich die Aufgabe, die komplexe Wechselwirkung zwischen Eckharts Mystik und den unterschiedlichen Vertretern der europäischen wie außereuropäischen Phänomenologietradition in ihrer ganzen philosophiehistorischen und systematischen Breite auszuloten. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Rezeption, Adaption, Umdeutung und mögliche Verfremdung von Eckharts Denken durch die betreffenden Autoren sowie die Interpretation von Grundthemen der eckhartschen Philosophie, Theologie und Mystik mit den methodischen Mitteln der Phänomenologie. Von besonderem Interesse sind dabei die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen der phänomenologischen und der mystischen Grundhaltung (insbesondere mit Blick auf den von Husserl nie preisgegebenen Wissenschaftscharakter der phänomenologischen Philosophie) sowie die Frage, inwieweit die von der neueren Phänomenologie praktizierte Indienstnahme Eckharts für die Entwicklung eines postmetaphysischen Denkens berechtigt ist oder seinen philosophisch-theologisch-mystischen Ansatz in unzulässiger Weise verkürzt. Mai 1892 in Sanok, Österreich-Ungarn, im heutigen Polen geboren. Sie war die älteste von vier Geschwistern und wuchs in einer wohlhabenden und bildungsfreundlichen Familie auf. Sie studierte in Lemberg und Wien Philosophie und dissertierte „Über das sogenannte disjunktive Urteil in der neueren Logik“ bei Adolf Stöhr. Jahrelang arbeitete sie unbezahlt am Philosophischen Institut als Bibliothekarin sowie als Assistentin ihres Mentors und Doktorvaters. An eine Anstellung in der Lehre war für eine Frau zu jener Zeit und besonders in Wien nicht zu denken. Als wissenschaftliche Bibliothekarin hatte sie wenigstens die Möglichkeit, im universitären Umfeld zu arbeiten und sich zu vernetzen. Im Zuge der Neubesetzung der philosophischen Ordinariate 1922 mit Robert Reininger, Moritz Schlick und Karl Bühler organisierte sie die Neuaufstellung der Bibliothek und hielt auch Lehrveranstaltungen ab. Mit der Formierung des Wiener Kreises, der für Offenheit und Pluralismus stand, war Interdisziplinarität gefragt und mit ihr die Expertise zahlreicher Wissenschafter*innen. Amalia Rosenblüth zählte zu den bekannteren Frauen im Wissenschaftsbetrieb ihrer Zeit. Ist sie doch auch eine der Unterzeichner*innen eines Dankesschreibens an Schlick, als dieser sich entschloss, seinem Lehrstuhl in Wien treu zu bleiben. Ab 1937 verlor Rosenblüth ihre Anstellung an der Universität. Mit der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialist*innen wurden ihre Schwester, eine Freundin und deren Tochter, mit der sie zuletzt zusammenlebte, deportiert und ermordet. Sie selbst tauchte unter dem Decknamen Margarete Dengler unter. Erst 1947 emigrierte sie in die USA, wo sie als Bibliothekarin arbeitete, zunächst am Idaho State College und schließlich an der University of Washington in Seattle, wo sie bis zu ihrem 84. Lebensjahr verblieb, unter anderem auch als Mitarbeiterin des austro-amerikanischen Psychoanalytikers René A. Spitz. Eine Rückkehr an die Universität Wien scheiterte trotz vieler Fürsprecher*innen am Unwillen der Hochschulleitung. Dass es gerade und immer wieder Bibliotheken waren, in denen Frauen und Wissenschafter*innen einen Platz fanden, die aus der universitären Lehre ferngehalten wurden, ist ebenso tragisch wie bemerkenswert. Ohne akademische Anerkennung und Sichtbarwerdung blieb auch Amalia Rosenblüth und geriet darüber fast in Vergessenheit. Herzstücke ihrer Arbeit sind natürlich die Bibliotheken. Die Dauerleihgabe der Wiener Kreis Gesellschaft umfasst rund 10.000 Titel aus den Beständen des Vereins und wichtiger Anhänger des Wiener Kreises. Sie besteht aus historischen Werken, händisch kommentierten Ausgaben, Fachliteratur über Philosophie, Musikwissenschaft, aus der Theatertheorie, Geschichte, Religionswissenschaft, Literaturforschung – viele davon mit Widmungen und Ex Libris versehen –, die eine historisch interessante und für die logisch-empirische Philosophie bedeutende Sammlung bilden. Die Arbeitsbibliotheken und Sammlungen sind ihren Nachlassgeber*innen folgend aufgestellt. Sie stehen der interessierten Öffentlichkeit und der Forschung ab sofort als Präsenzbestand zur Verfügung. Sie befasst sich mit den Biografien der Nachlassgeber*innen, der Geschichte der Bestände und den Bearbeitungsschritten der Dauerleihgabe. *Univ.–Prof. i.R. Mag. Dr. Friedrich Stadler*gründete als Historiker und Philosoph 1991 unter dem Namen Institut Wiener Kreis die Wiener Kreis Gesellschaft und leitet diese seitdem. Seit 2011 ist das Institut Wiener Kreis eine Subeinheit der Fakultät für Philosophie und Bildungswissenschaft. Die einzelnen und vielgereisten Bibliotheken der Wiener Kreis Gesellschaft wurden von Prof. Stadler zusammengeführt und der Fachbereichsbibliothek Philosophie und Psychologie als Dauerleihgabe zur Verfügung gestellt.
