It is dedicated to the thematic focus „Thinking the Future“. Philosophy not only involves abstract thought, but also the act of envisioning and anticipating what lies ahead at a fundamental level. However, contemplating the future concerns not only philosophy but also societies and people in general – today more than ever and on a global level. The future holds opportunities and risks. Sciences, the arts, businesses and everyday cultures imagine possibilities and simulate scenarios. They try to think both theoretically and empirically about the consequences and the relationships between the development of education, knowledge and society. Philosophy cannot answer what future awaits humanity, but it can contribute to questions such as: How do we distinguish the future from the present and the present from the past? What are the consequences for life to exist in time? How far can humans extend their scope of influence and domination? What underlies the desire to escape mortality through technological developments? What influence do technologies have on human self-understanding, on work and life? What ways of thinking can help in addressing the challenges posed by climate change, globalization, digitalization, artificial intelligence and military conflicts? How can education be rethought and what options for shaping the future should be developed? What responsibilities and obligations do people living today have towards future generations? What is the relation between philosophy and science fiction? What will be the role of philosophy in the future, in particular at educational institutions and universities? In this context, the 11th Congress of the Austrian Society for Philosophy opens a forum for thinking together about the future. The IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme (MSCFP) was launched in 2020 by the IAEA Director General to increase the number of women in the nuclear field, supporting an inclusive workforce of men and women who contribute to and drive global scientific and technological innovation. The programme aims to inspire and encourage women to pursue a career in the nuclear related field, by providing highly motivated female students with scholarships for master’s programmes and an opportunity to pursue an internship facilitated by the IAEA. Scholarships are awarded annually. In the selection of students, consideration is given to geographic and field of study diversity, in addition to eligibility requirements and other criteria. The selected students are awarded up to €20,000 for tuition costs and up to €20,000 for living costs for their master’s programme (the amount will vary depending on the duration of the programme, costs associated with tuition as well as location of the studies). Upon completion of their studies, students who pursue an internship facilitated by the IAEA, in line with their specialization in the nuclear field, are also provided with a stipend for up to 12 months. The internships may take place at the IAEA or in nuclear organizations in the public or private sector. Additionally, students are provided with opportunities to attend and participate in various educational, professional, and networking events. MSCFP recipients also have a chance to become a part of the programme’ s LinkedIn Student and Alumni Group where they can connect with their peers and exchange knowledge and experience, as well as find out about technical events and career opportunities. *Since its launch in 2020, MSCFP has received 2271 applications, selecting 560 students from 121 nationalities studying in 72 countries worldwide. By end of March 2024, 201 students have already completed their master’s programme with support of MSCFP. From these graduates, 110 have been confirmed for an internship facilitated by the IAEA at the IAEA departments and labs (Seibersdorf and Monaco), IAEA Collaborating Centres, and other nuclear organizations in the public or private sector in various countries The internships are linked to the students’ areas of specialization in fields ranging from nuclear energy, nuclear science and applications, nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear safety and security and nuclear law. The remaining graduates have pursued PhD studies or obtained employment in their field. Feyerabend (1924-1994), one of the most stimulating and controversial figures of Twentieth-Century philosophy, spent most of his formative years in postwar Vienna (1946-1955). Born in Red Vienna, Feyerabend came of age at the time of the Nazi Anschluss and completed his philosophical apprenticeship at the University of Vienna during the Allied occupation. At the time of his university studies in philosophy and physics, Feyerabend animated the so-called Third Vienna Circle (1949-1953) around Viktor Kraft in the context of the Austrian College Society, and actively participated in the European Forum Alpbach and in the Institut für Wissenschaft und Kunst. In addition, he served as a research assistant to Arthur Pap, who spent 1953/54 as a Fulbright visiting professor at the University of Vienna. The international conference Paul Feyerabend and Austrian Philosophy aims at exploring the milieu which shaped Feyerabends intellectual development with a focus on his interaction with university teachers and intellectual figures such as members of the former Vienna Circle like Viktor Kraft, Philipp Frank, Herbert Feigl, and Rudolf Carnap, physicists like Felix Ehrenhaft and Walter Thirring, as well as with Walter Hollitscher and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Contacts continued throughout the 1950s and 1960s at the London School of Economics with Karl Popper and, later, with Imre Lakatos, and in Minneapolis, at Feigls Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science, where Feyerabend published his pathbreaking Against Method for the first time in 1970. A special symposium on the publication of Feyerabends Formative Years, edited by Matteo Collodel and Eric Oberheim (Springer Nature, two volumes) will be held as part of this conference. The conference is organized by the Institute Vienna Circle (University of Vienna) and by the Vienna Circle Society. Date: 27/06/2024 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3F ABSTRACT: In this talk, I will unpack different facets of the question of what it means to do anthropology of science as a feminist. In the first part, I will examine the tradition of feminist philosophers of science discussing the possibility of feminist science. Then, I will discuss what a critical scientific perspective_ _entails in anthropology. Finally, I will integrate these two bodies of knowledge to explore what a feminist anthropology of science could mean in terms of its scientific practice. In the second part, I will focus on a related issue, which I call _the problem of normativity_ - the claim that science loses its crucial feature, objectivity, when influenced by feminism (or any other worldview). Despite well-established knowledge in feminist philosophy of science and 'values in science' discussions, which offer resolutions to this problem, I contend that confusion persists about what a critical perspective, such as a feminist one, implies for scientific reasoning and research aims. I will argue that the problem of normativity involves two aspects, which are often confused: first, whether values play a role in the context of justification, and second, whether a critical social scientist, in order to be critical, must go beyond description. I will address both issues by relying on mainstream claims from contemporary philosophy of science and will draw conclusions from this discussion for theorizing a feminist anthropology of science.

** *Dear Colleagues,* * This is an email to invite you to the next presentations in the WIP series. The meeting will take place in lecture hall 3A (NIG, Universitätsstraße 7, 3rd floor) at 17:00 and will last up to 18:30. Pia-Zoe Hahne (University of Vienna): "‘Trust the Machine?’: Conceptualising Trust in the Age of Generative Artificial Intelligence" To accept a new technology, we first need to trust it. With AI, there is not just one specific kind of trust that we put in the system; instead, it is a “multidimensional construct, including trust in functionality, trust in reliability, and trust in data protection” (Wang, Lin & Shao, 2022, p. 340). However, trust in AI is often only conceptualised as an epistemic trust (Alvaro, 2023; Ryan, 2020). These approaches to study conceptual disruptions often remain abstract and disregard the involvement of stakeholders. This is where a new approach in engaging with conceptual disruptions comes in. Conceptual engineering is an emerging approach in philosophy of technology. It stresses the connection between empirical research and conceptual analysis (Löhr, 2023). Conceptual misalignment is relevant for AI as it describes a scenario in which concepts seem applicable while hiding “an underlying value misalignment” (Marchiori & Scharp, 2024, p. 2), resulting in ethical problems. Trust is an ideal concept for conceptual engineering as it forms the basis for other concepts and disruptions therefore have farreaching consequences. Löhr (2023) and Marchiori & Sharp (2024) specifically points out that studying these disruptions necessitates empirical data, demonstrating a new turn in engaging with conceptual disruptions. The intense disruptions influenced by AI present new challenges by moving away from a purely epistemic view on trust in technology as well as the far-reaching consequences on trust between people and trust in institutions. I present a new approach to study conceptual disruptions by moving beyond abstract conceptual analysis and into practical uses of concepts and empirical data through conceptual engineering. Dominik Boll (VU University Amsterdam) "Taking Responsibility: With or Without You?" My topic in this talk is talking responsibility and its place in our responsibility practices. The literature on responsibility has blossomed and turned to ever finer specialisation in the last decades, and yet the primary focus often remains on _ holding responsible_. Philosophers have increasingly turned to theorising our responsibility _practices_—how blaming and praising are _socialised_ phenomena, how holding responsible is something we _do _between each other beyond blame as a mental state—but there is still much focus on what the blamer does or is licenced to do. Few theorists focus on the perspective on the other side of responsibility interactions. While there are large literatures on guilt, apologies, or making amends, writers rarely take the general first-personal perspective of the party responding to their own infraction, investigating what it is for the agent to react to what they have done, what they are required to do to deal with it, and what precisely their response aims at. This presents an activity distinct from holding oneself responsible (Bero 2020). Indeed, the need to respond to our actions and their significance is an omnipresent aspect of our moral lives. We hold others responsible for what they do, and we take responsibility for what we do. This is not, however, how taking responsibility is currently theorised. Departing from Wolf (2001), philosophers have proposed different accounts of taking responsibility (Enoch 2012; Sliwa 2024; Mason 2019). They differ in their assumptions and goals but theorise something similar—how we react to (some of) our own morally consequential actions such as to accommodate its fallout for others. Notably, however, taking responsibility is captured as something entirely internal to the wrongdoer and not as an interpersonal practice parallel to holding responsible. In this paper, I theorise this interpersonal phenomenon. I first explicate two common threads in the literature on taking responsibility. Taking responsibility is theorised as something which the agent can do all by themselves, yet taking responsibility is supposed to be essentially interpersonal. I argue that this presents a tension and leaves a lacuna to theorise a broader account of taking responsibility. I then advance two arguments to show that such an account is needed for making sense of the full extent of our responsibility practices. Lastly, I provide the contours of such an account as an activity which achieves certain aims between its parties. This embeds taking responsibility in the broader web of our responsibility practices and resolves the tension. Beim ersten Termin im Juni wird es einen kurzen inhaltlichen Input aus fachdidaktischer Perspektive geben, in dem vor allem die Anforderung "Kompetenzorientierung" in zwei Weisen übersetzt und erläutert werden soll: a) hinsichtlich konzeptioneller Anforderungen und b) hinsichtlich praktischer Gestaltungen von mündlichen Leistungsbewertungssituationen im Ethik- und Philosophieunterricht. Im gemeinsamen Gespräch sollen von dort aus Interessenschwerpunkte und Herausforderungen identifiziert werden, die beim Termin im September weiter bearbeitet werden könnten. Unterschiedliche Formate sind denkbar, z.B. das Gespräch über fachdidaktische Vorschläge zum Thema Leistungsbewertung, die im Zeitraum zwischen Juni und September von den Teilnehmenden gelesen werden - und/oder der Austausch über die Herausforderungen und Möglichkeiten konkreter Aufgabenerstellungen, ausgehend von vorgegebenen Materialien, usw. Eine Anmeldung ist nicht erforderlich. Die Teilnahme am Termin im Juni verpflichtet nicht zur Teilnahme im September. The workshop (which is held in German) is aimed at all interested persons (teachers, students, other people from the public) who would like to exchange ideas on the topic of oral assessment in the school subjects of ethics/philosophy (e.g. in connection with the Matura examination) and who would like to network personally. At the first meeting in June, there will be a brief input from a didactical perspective, in which the requirement of "competence orientation" will be interpreted and explained in two ways: a) with regard to conceptual requirements and b) with regard to the practical design of oral assessment situations in ethics and philosophy education. From there, key points of interest and the relevant challenges are to be identified in a joint discussion, which could be worked on further at the meeting in September. Different formats are available, e.g. a discussion on didactical texts on the subject of assessment, which participants will read in the period between June and September - and/or an exchange on the challenges and opportunities of designing actual assessment exercises based on given materials, etc. Registration is not required. All are welcome! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Antonio Piccolomini d'Aragona SUNDHOLM'S SEMANTICS: LOGICAL ATAVISM AND THE NATURE OF PROOFS Philosophy of Science Colloquium The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows. Date: 20/06/2024 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3F ABSTRACT: I aim at providing an overview of some of Sundholm's observations on the philosophy and history of logic, which I overall refer to as _Sundholm's semantics_. In the reconstruction I propose, the latter is based on two main tenets, namely, that we had better jettison the object-language/meta-language distinction, and that the careful meaning-explanation which formalisms must come with render the axioms and rules of inference evident. The first tenet goes hand in hand with the detection of what Sundholm call the _Bolzano reductions_, namely, two methodological tenets according to which, first, correctness of assertions is reduced to propositional truth and, second, inferential validity is reduced to logical consequence. In Sundholm's opinion, these Bolzano reductions hide crucial epistemic and pragmatic aspects of logic, when compared to what is the case in "atavistic" approaches like Frege's, where formalisms are indeed understood as meaningful languages. Thus, Sundholm's semantics does not consist in a meta-linguistic attribution of meaning to uninterpreted sets of strings, but in an issuing of the intended meaning of contentual formalism, including semantic values for derivations. The latter are dealt with by Sundholm through a distinction between proof-objects and proof-acts, which Sundholm himself had put stressed in the context of his early discussion of BHK-semantics. When cast as a constructive reading of the so-called truth-maker principle, via a Martin-Löfian rendering of assertions as existence of proof(-object)s for given propositions, the proof-object/proof-act distinction leads to a fresh semantic account of Gentzen's 1932 and 1936 versions of Natural Deduction, as well as to doubts regarding their often asserted meta-theoretical equivalence.

Title: *Rule-Skepticism and Primitive Normativity* Abstract: In his Wittgenstein on Rules and Private language, Saul Kripke established a rule-skepticism, according to which any strategy to respond to it needs to provide facts determining that a subject is, e.g., following the rule of addition rather than that of quaddition. In this talk, I intend to propose a primitive-normative strategy to address the rule-skepticism. Firstly, I will reconstruct the skeptical argument, pointing out that the core issue is to solve the problem of rule-deviation. Then, an account of primitive normativity is proposed, based on the analysis of what is "seeming right" and what is "seeming wrong", to answer the deviation problem about rules. Finally, I will show that under my account, the primitive normativity and the public normativity are intrinsically interrelated, which can provide the source and foundation for the general phenomenon of normativity. This strategy relies on the regularity and primitive-normative attitude constructed by the subject in training, and it can satisfy both the factual and the normative conditions as required by the Kripkean skeptics. Abstract: Recent work in the sociology of conversation suggests that human communicative exchanges are generally structured around epistemic imbalances. One might wonder how empirical work on the representation of knowledge in conversation relates to philosophical work on the nature of knowledge itself. I argue that the best theoretical understanding of knowledge makes sense of the relevant empirical findings. If we take knowledge to be an essentially factive mental state, we can model conversation as a generative adversarial structure between speaker and addressee; this model explains why so much human conversation is curiosity-driven, and why human beings spend so much time in conversation with each other. Foucault is generally perceived as a harsh critic of Marxism, both in terms of its analytical possibilities and political dangers. Abstract: Carnap maintains that explication refines and sharpens everyday concepts, enabling them to perform rigorous philosophical and scientific functions. Building on Carnap and Chang, I argue that conceptual enhancement involves iterative explication. Each step is an improvement on its predecessor and sets the stage fur further conceptual refinement. I draw on familiar examples from the history of philosophy to illustrate the procedure and its benefits. Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, am Dienstag, dem 28.05.2024, findet von 18.00-19:30 Uhr in der Bibliothek der Klassische Philologie (Hauptgebäude der Universität, Universitätsring 1, Stiege 6, Hochparterre) ein Vortrag statt von PD Dr. Michael Schramm (Göttingen) zum Thema "Rhetorik, Politik und Philosophie im Neuplatonismus" Abstract: Die Neuplatoniker dachten nur an das Eine und den Aufstieg zu ihm, so lautete lange die Forschungsmeinung zur dominierenden philosophischen Richtung der Spätantike. Dass sich der Neuplatonismus auch mit politischer Philosophie beschäftigte, wird in den letzten Jahren zunehmend gesehen. Zu dieser gehört auch die Rhetorik. Trotz Platons Ablehnung der zeitgenössischen Rhetorik engagierten sich auch die Neuplatoniker in diesem Feld, theoretisch wie praktisch, und zwar in Konkurrenz zu den spätantiken Rhetorenschulen im Kampf um die höhere Bildung. Der Vortrag versucht am Beispiel des bislang für diese Frage wenig behandelten spätantiken Philosophen und Aristoteles-Kommentators Themistios (317-388/89), der mehr als 30 Jahre der erfolgreichste politische Redner seiner Zeit war, einige Linien dieser Auseinandersetzung zwischen Rhetorik und Philosophie in der Politik nachzuzeichnen und zu zeigen, wie sich ein Philosoph praktisch rhetorisch in der Politik engagieren konnte, ohne die Philosophie zu verraten. Externer Lehrauftrag ‚Ethics of Transformation and Human Rights‘

The School for Transformation is currently looking for a senior lecturer for an undergraduate course in ‘Ethics and Human Rights’ at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. The course should address the major challenges to democratic rights and freedoms raised by Digitization, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, while also engaging with the ethical and political dimensions of socio-ecological transformations such as loss of biodiversity, species extinction and climate change. The course is designed as a 2 SWS module (3ECTS) to be taught in the winter term 2024 as part of the new BA ‘Transformation Studies. ArtxScience’. The degree offers a transdisciplinary curriculum that lays out the theoretical and practical foundations for understanding change dynamics – both historically and present – at the intersection of scientific and artistic methods and practices. With this in mind, we are looking for an engaged scholar trained in political philosophy, applied ethics or human rights, ideally with a strong network of international contacts to social activists and/or human rights practitioners. Given the scope of topics and themes to be covered, the teaching method should combine self-taught classes with inputs from external guest speakers, specializing in relevant fields. Next to topical sessions and debates, special emphasis should be placed on practical exercises, workshops and case studies as well as field visits to allow for a rich and engaging learning experience. The renumeration follows the payment scheme for external lecturers of the KV for University Personal. Dear all, this is a reminder for the Trans*formations talk by Dr. Alyosxa Tudor (SOAS London) which will take place tomorrow :) Title: Decolonising Trans/Gender Studies? Abstract: In this talk, I would like to discuss with you what it means to think of trans/gender studies as a field that engages with geopolitics, with transnational knowledge production, with histories of entangled oppressions and resistance movements. With this I try to go beyond what our attackers think trans/gender studies is towards defining what the broader field of trans/gender studies can be. Can it be a field of knowledge generation that aims for decolonisation? How can we make sure that decolonisation is not a metaphor, as Eve Tuck and Wayne Yang remind us? How can we mobilise histories and the theories and epistemologies generated from them in ways that are not reductive, simplistic and incapable of sitting with the complex contradictions that still need responsible and decisive actions in face of present-day injustices? How can we be accountable for our very different structural positions in this quest, in terms of location, postcolonial position, migratisation, queer- and transness, class and racialisation? Often this is contradictory and painful. But it must also be clear that taking a stance is necessary. Date: 23/05/2024 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 3F ABSTRACT: Both Ernst Cassirer's philosophy of mathematics and his philosophy of culture received more and more attention recently. Nevertheless, there is scarcely work on the relationship between the two and in my talk I want to show, that considering both sheds new light on Cassirer's conception of mathematics and, furthermore, his overall philosophy. In a first part I will show, that in Cassirer's interpretation, the concept of number plays a central role in determining mathematics and the natural sciences: Mathematics is here a form of theoretical knowledge. In a second part, I will broaden the perspective and consider Cassirer's reflections on nonscientific conceptions of number and show, that for Cassirer there is a double function of number. The talk will close with another expansion of perspective: I will elaborate how mathematics can further be understood as a form of meta-symbolic knowledge, and hereby give a characterization of Cassirer's conception of philosophy.

Event: Pre-opening: International Research Center Gender and Performativity Speaker: Jack Halberstam Title: Unworlding: Trans* Architectures When/where: Thursday, May 16th, 5pm at Großer Seminarraum (E0101), IKM / Anton-von-Webern-Platz 1, 1030 Wien Abstract: Today, I am going to lay out some ideas that build on many different aesthetic performances and practices involving trans bodies and that search for and produce new vocabularies for discussing transness and new deployments of transness for the project of dismantling world and worldedness as concepts that hold current political realities in place. I will look at trans anarchitectures alongside performances like Faye Driscoll’s incredible event, “Weathering,” to delineate what is meant by unworlding, what practices and aesthetic gestures it implies and what im/possible futures it imagines. Unworlding is a philosophy and an anti-anti-utopian idea that breaks with world-building projects (such as those found in early queer theory), and charts a course for queer and trans art that skews towards violence, acts of undoing and dismantling and the embrace of entropic unraveling. What might this look like in terms of a politics of representation, particularly one oriented around trans and queer bodies? Biography: Jack Halberstam is the David Feinson Professor of The Humanities at Columbia University. Halberstam is the author of seven books including: Skin Shows: Gothic Horror and the Technology of Monsters (Duke UP, 1995), Female Masculinity (Duke UP, 1998), In A Queer Time and Place (NYU Press, 2005), The Queer Art of Failure (Duke UP, 2011), Gaga Feminism: Sex, Gender, and the End of Normal (Beacon Press, 2012) and, a short book titled Trans*: A Quick and Quirky Account of Gender Variance (University of California Press). Halberstam’s latest book, 2020 from Duke UP is titled Wild Things: The Disorder of Desire. Places Journal awarded Halberstam its Arcus/Places Prize in 2018 for innovative public scholarship on the relationship between gender, sexuality and the built environment. Halberstam is now finishing a second volume on wildness titled: Unworlding: An Aesthetics of Collapse. Halberstam was recently the subject of a short film titled “So We Moved” by Adam Pendleton. Khora Kolloquium am 16.05. 18:30 HS 3D: "Georges Bataille: Immanenz, Kommunikation und der Hass der Poesie"

Liebe Kolleg:innen, Ich darf ganz herzlich zum Nächsten Khora-Kolloquium diesen Donnerstag, den 16.05. um 18:30 im Hörsaal 3D einladen. Dieses Mal wird uns mit Maximilian Margreiter ein ausgewiesener Bataille-Experte das Verhältnis von Poesie und dem Begriff des Unmöglichen bei Bataille vorstellen: *Immanenz, Kommunikation und der Hass der Poesie. Batailles Denken des Unmöglichen zwischen Literatur, Ökonomie und Erotik* Georges Batailles vielschichtiges und disparat wirkendes Werk kreist um ein zentrales Problem: Das Denken, und noch wichtiger, die Kommunikation des Unmöglichen. Dieses Unmögliche ist es, was uns nach Bataille als menschliche Wesen ausmacht und uns eine souveräne Existenz verleiht. Wir werden dem Unmöglichen unter anderem in den antiökonomischen Formen des Opfers, des Festes, der Verschwendung gewahr, welche sich dem Primat der Nützlichkeit entziehen, in der erotischen Ekstase, die eine Bejahung des Lebens bis in den Tod darstellt, und in der Literatur, insbesondere der Poesie, die die Kommunikation schlechthin ist. Im Unmöglichen findet sich nach Bataille das Subjekt wieder, als das, was es wirklich ist, als Riss, an dem eine intensive Kommunikation stattfindet, die in die Immanenz verweist. 1962, kurz vor seinem Tod, gibt Bataille seine Erzählung Der Hass der Poesie, versehen mit einem neuen Vorwort unter dem Titel Das Unmöglicheneu heraus. Diese Verbindung zwischen dem Unmöglichen und der Literatur, speziell in der Form der Poesie, die Bataille so an seinem Lebensende nochmals betont hat, eröffnet einen Zugang zu einem sonst oft kryptisch und unstrukturiert anmutenden Werk. Dear All, The "Wittgen=steine" series (organized by the Wittgenstein Research Group) features two talks this term: April 12th, 2024; 3:00pm to 4:30pm, HS 3A: Pavel Arazim: "Therapie(n) als Methode(n) -- warum und wie? Vergleich der Antiphilosophie Wittgensteins und Bergsons" May 14th, 2024: 3:00pm to 4:30pm, HS 3A: Anna Boncompagni: "Once more with feeling" A feminist-Wittgensteinian take on language and liberation" Abstracts: Pavel Arazim: "Therapie(n) als Methode(n) - warum und wie?" Wittgenstein wurde bereits mit vielen Autor:innen verglichen, kaum aber mit Bergson. Dabei war er wohl der populärste Philosoph unmittelbar bevor Wittgenstein bekannt wurde. Schon deshalb liegt es nahe, die Möglichkeit eines Einflusses zu untersuchen. Darüber hinaus wurden beide Autoren von William James inspiriert und entwickeln seinen Ansatz weiter, philosophische Probleme eher aufzulösen, statt sie zu lösen. Folgende Fragen sollen im Vortrag behandelt werden: Was bedeutet es für Bergson und Wittgenstein, dass eine philosophische Frage verschwinden soll? Inwiefern lässt sich dieser Zugang als allgemeine Auffassung der Philosophie verteidigen? Soll also Philosophie keine Thesen aufstellen und mit welcher Begründung? Womöglich hilft Bergsons Zugang zu Bewegung und Veränderung zum besseren Verständnis dessen, was Wittgenstein zu dieser Methodologie führen konnte. Die Wirklichkeit ist lebendig und dynamisch, und deswegen kann sie nicht mittels verallgemeinernder Begriffe ausgedrückt werden. Mein Anliegen besteht darin aufzuzeigen, wie sich dieser therapeutische und anti-theoretische Zugang im Verständnis der Normativität bei beiden Autoren widerspiegelt. Anna Boncompagni: "Once more with feeling ..." Recent work in feminist epistemology and philosophy of language highlights how language use contributes to oppressive practices. For instance, Tirrell (2012), building on Wilfrid Sellars and Robert Brandom, analyzes the normative power of derogatory terms and how they engender harmful actions and behaviors. McGowan (2019), developing David Lewis' approach, claims that conversational contributions enact norms and permissibility facts both within the conversation and in social practices, thereby constituting harms and keeping oppressive practices in place. Both perspectives are indebted to the Wittgensteinian notion of language games. In this paper, I retrace this inheritance and further argue for a Wittgensteinian understanding of these phenomena, also appealing to his concepts of rule-following and forms of life. However, rather than oppression, I apply these insights to liberation: I claim that certain moves in language games enact positive changes in social norms and forms of life. In particular, I apply this approach to linguistic moves related to LGBTQ issues. This Wittgensteinian-feminist framework, I argue, helps better understand both the difficulties and the potentialities of liberatory and innovative conversational moves. Everybody welcome! Trans* Philosophy is one of the most exciting 'new' strands of philosophical theorizing, and we are happy to host the second event on the topic at the Department of Philosophy, to be followed by more later this year. This time, we will be joined by Alyosxa Tudor, Chair of the Centre for Gender Studies at SOAS London. Their work connects trans and queer feminist approaches with transnational feminism and postcolonial studies. Alyosxa’s main research interest lies in analysing (knowledge productions on) migrations, diasporas and borders in relation to critiques of Eurocentrism and to processes of gendering and racialisation. Dear All, You are very welcome to the talk "What We Owe to Nonhuman Animals" by Gary Steiner When: 14.05.2024 16:45 Where: Room 3C, Neues Institutsgebäude (NiG), 1010 Wien ABSTRACT Gary Steiner - Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, Bucknell University, USA In this talk, Professor Steiner will provide an overview of central themes from his recent book What We Owe to Nonhuman Animals: The Historical Pretensions of Reason and the Ideal of Felt Kinship (Routledge, 2023). Where the Western philosophical tradition has maintained that the idea of human superiority over all non-human beings is a product of the impartial employment of reason, Professor Steiner argues that in fact the tradition has used reason as a tool for rationalizing this prior commitment to human superiority over the nonhuman world. Where the tradition has claimed that reason operates independently of our embodied and affective (emotional) constitution, Professor Steiner argues for the mutual interplay of reason and emotion in the formation of moral commitments, and he further argues for the conclusion that a great many nonhuman animals have rich subjective lives that in essential respects place them on a par with human beings. Rather than seeking to preserve the historical status of human beings as what Kant called "the titular lords of nature," we ought to broaden considerably our conception of the moral community so as to include all sentient beings as full and direct beneficiaries of moral concern. work-in-progress talk by Ewelina Grądzka, “Propaedeutic of Philosophy: Austrian Influences on the Heritage of Polish Didactics of Philosophy“

Dear all, you are cordially invited to a work-in-progress talk by Ewelina Grądzka (UPJPII, Kraków, POL), taking place on Wed 5 June 2024, on “Propaedeutic of Philosophy: Austrian Influences on the Heritage of Polish Didactics of Philosophy“. (abstract below) The talk will take place at NIG, Hörsaal 3F (R 313), from 13.15-14.45 and is public. Abstract: Propaedeutic of philosophy was introduced into the Polish educational system in the 19th c. during the Partitions while one part of Poland, called Galicia, belonged to the Austria-Hungarian Empire. In the paper, I will present how this heritage evolved and how it influenced Polish education after the independence in 1918. First, I will analyze a discussion in the 1920s among Polish philosophers on the goals and content of the future program of propaedeutic of philosophy that emphasized the need to evolve from the Austrian model of teaching psychology and logic only. Secondly, I will present the ideas of the central figure of that discussion, Kazimierz Twardowski. I will analyze how the program proposed by him evolved between 1921/1922 and 1935, from the confinement to psychology and logic to a program that included ethics, aesthetics, sociology and incorporated discussion as one of the methodological tools. Among the reasons for this development might be the influence of the discussion among Polish philosophers to which I refer in the paper, but also more general developments in education politics of the time, and finally reforms that took place in the Austrian school system since 1918/19. Unfortunately, the work on reforming the propaedeutics of philosophy was discontinued with the establishment of the communist regime in Poland after the Second World War. In den eingereichten Arbeiten muss ein Bezug zur evolutionären Erkenntnistheorie ersichtlich sein, als deren Begründer Rupert Riedl gilt. Arbeiten, die neue oder kritische Zugänge zu evolutionstheoretischen Ansätzen aufgreifen, sind gleichermaßen willkommen. It has also become clear that, values can have both a positive and a negative impact on science. Sometimes, values can contribute to science’s epistemic and social goals, while other times, they can have a detrimental effect on science’s epistemic goals, i.e., biasing research results. With this framework in mind, the main goal of this workshop is to clarify the negative roles of values in scientific research, and in particular their sometimes-biasing effects. While it is well-known that biases impact scientific research results, we have a less clear understanding of the different types of biases, their mechanisms, and their scope. The workshop includes talks by invited speakers Anke Büter (Aarhus University), Heather Douglas (Michigan State University), Jacob Stegenga (University of Cambridge), and David Teira (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia).
