Universität Wien, Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistk, Spitalgasse 2 Hof 8, Helene-Richter-Saal Discussants: Elisabeth Holzleithner (University of Vienna, Philosophy of Law and Legal Gender Studies), Juliana Cesario Alvim Gomes (CEU Vienna / FGMG Minas Gerais, Brazil, Human Rights, Gender and Sexuality Studies), Julia Roth (University of Vienna / Anglophone Literatures and Cultures and Gender Studies) This roundtable sheds light on the intersectionally gendered dimensions of the US election campaign and its outcome. Discussing the “right-wing patterns of en-gendering” evoked in extreme right discourse, the participants trace the ways in which “gender” serves as an arena, a sort of meta-language and “affective bridge” to catapult diverse topics into the public sphere. From various perspectives – bridging the USA with Europe and Brazil / Latin America as well as Cultural and Gender Studies approaches with lenses from Law and Human Rights – the participants will delineate also the complexities of masculinities, femonationalism, sexual exceptionalism (Gabriele Dietze), or reverse anti-colonialism. The panel asks what we can expect from the new US government in the years to come in light of the affective strategies that are employed in this gendered and “reloaded Culture War” (Wendy Brown) in order to create a feeling of community and a new common sense. Regressive Geschlechterrollen, Verschwörungstheorien, Agitation für verschiedenste neurechte Politprojekte charakterisieren die gegenwärtigen Diskurse und Dynamiken im Digitalen. Simon Strick zeigt, wie diese Räume nicht allein mit den Stichworten der Manipulation oder Desinformation beschrieben werden können, sondern dass rechte Kulturkämpfe als derzeit dominante Populärkultur verstanden werden müssen. Dr. Simon Strick leitet das Projekt „Digital Blackface. Rassisierte Affektmuster des Digitalen“ (Universität Potsdam), war Genderforscher und Medienwissenschaftler am Zentrum für Medienwissenschaften (ZeM) Brandenburg; 2021 mit dem Hans Bausch Mediapreis ausgezeichnet. My primary case study is the picture of a black hole, from which I develop an interpretation-based account of picture representation analogous to how models represent: a picture represents a designated target system iff, once interpreted, it exemplifies properties that are then imputed to the target via a de-idealising function. Then, I show that justification of the inferences from pictures crucially depends on their causal mechanisms of production, in contrast with the standard justificatory strategies we employ for model inferences.

Soziologe und Statistiker. 1937 Promotion an der Universität Wien zum Dr.jur. Paul Neurath wurde 1938 von der Gestapo verhaftet, mit dem ersten Österreicher-Transport in das KZ Dachau deportiert und einige Monate später in das KZ Buchen- wald überstellt. 1939 wurde er entlassen und emigrierte nach Schweden, 1941 in die USA. Er arbeitete und studierte Soziologie und Statistik an der Columbia University. Zudem war er Assistent von Paul F. Lazarsfeld. Ab 1946 war er Mitarbeiter am Queens College der City University of New York, wo er vom Instruktor zum Professor für Soziologie und Statistik aufstieg. Er lehrte und forschte unter anderem in Bombay, Köln und Wien. 1980 gründete Paul M. Neurath mit Anton Amann das Paul F. Lazarsfeld Ar- chiv an der Universität Wien, das er bis zu seinem Tod am 3.9.2001 leitete. Das Paul F. Lazarsfeld Archiv verwaltet den wissenschaftlichen Nachlass von Paul M. Die promovierte Literaturwissenschaftlerin und Schriftstellerin, die als Tochter einer österreichischen Kaufmannsfamilie in Moskau geboren wurde und später in Wien lebte, war Mitglied der Sozialdemokratischen Arbeiterpartei (SDAP), der Vereinigung sozialistischer Schriftsteller und des Bundes der Proletarisch-Revolutionären Schriftsteller Österreichs. Workshop on the Ethics of Climate Emergency Co-hosted by Department of Philosophy University of Vienna and Knowledge in Crisis FWF Cluster of Excellence. Yet it raises crucial moral, political and institutional questions: Should the demands of urgency and the extent of potential harm alter procedures of decision-making or frameworks of justification? Which courses of action/institutions are permissible to avoid the harms of global warming? How should we understand responsibilities for remedying loss and damage as well as future generations in the context of climate emergency? This one-day workshop will bring together researchers working on the above and related issues surrounding climate emergency. Guten Tag, zu Beginn dieses Semesters war in meiner Lehrveranstaltung ein verstärktes Interesse an "creative AI", speziell in Form von ChatGPT (und Konsorten) festzustellen. Zwei einschlägige Vorträge aus einem Cyberspace Symposium in Brünn 2023 wurden gestern in Radio Orange zusammengefasst. All are welcome! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Simon Graf EPISTEMIC CONFLICTS: PERMISSIBILITY AND INCOMMENSURABILITY Philosophy of Science Colloquium The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows. Date: 24/10/2024 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 2G ABSTRACT: Sometimes we face choices in which the different values we subscribe to give us conflicting recommendations. This talk sets out to compare these value-conflict cases with so-called permissive cases, which are cases in which one body of evidence seemingly rationalizes multiple doxastic attitudes. The proposed resemblance arises from a similarity in the underlying conflicts displayed in these cases: while the former involve conflicting values, the latter involve conflicting epistemic standards. In both instances, we are faced with incommensurable alternatives which are supported by independent and non-directly comparable normative sources. By showing that permissive cases share the idiosyncratic features of comparisons under incommensurability, we gain a better understanding of numerous issues, such as the alleged arbitrariness of permissive attitudes. Furthermore, I will demonstrate that the proposed strategy is neutral regarding whether epistemic rationality is genuinely permissive. While some understandings of incommensurability support a permissive interpretation, others can be used to motivate impermissivism. This shifts the debate between permissivists and impermissivists by reducing normative questions about epistemic rationality to more fundamental questions about the nature of incommensurability.

When Susan Stryker stood up at a Lesbian and Gay History conference in New York in 1995 and yelled “I am a transsexual and I am not sick!”, she reclaimed the participation of the transsexual intellectual in the production of truths, refuting discourses of dehumanization. This inaugural scene of Trans Studies places the undoing of epistemic violence as both a precondition and a fundamental commitment of trans theoretical practice. But what does this commitment to emancipatory forms of knowledge production entail? What are the contradictions of aspiring to anti-normative purity? What conversations can we build on the repeated condemnation of those reproducing symbolic violence? Does this commitment not miss the practical reason of cultural narratives? And is it possible to separate the epistemic violence from our sense of self, our needs and desires? Do the voices of trans people really hold the key to an emancipatory meaning? And if we betray the idea that we just need to let trans people speak, what then can hold the possibility of undoing epistemic violence? In this talk, I reflect on these questions based on my own research trajectory, which spans topics such as trans subcultural spaces, neuroscientific studies of (trans)gender identity and trans social reproduction in global capitalism. The talk traces the shifts of my theoretical practice by building a personal cartography of minor truths. I take the term “minor truths” from the title of a show by the artist Spence Messih. Their glasswork compositions and philosophical considerations introduce a phenomenological sensibility in my analysis, inspiring me to search for a language that reflects the inseparability of theoretical standpoint from affective states, social relationships and political conjunctures. In conversation with Messih’s work, the talk evolves in a non-linear motion connecting five modes of epistemic experience: abstraction, vulnerability, praxeology, dialogue and betrayal. Bio: Eric Llaveria Caselles is a PhD Candidate at the Center for Interdisciplinary Women and Gender Studies (ZIFG) at the Technical University Berlin. His recent publications explore the limitations of gender identity positivism and queer deconstructivism as the two main approaches to trans theory. His research builds on current trans Marxist proposals and historical materialist traditions of gender theory to set the groundwork for an alternative framework in Trans Studies. All are welcome! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Philosophy of Science Colloquium TALK: Andreas Frenzel Conceptual Pluralism and Formal Philosophy Philosophy of Science Colloquium The Institute Vienna Circle holds a Philosophy of Science Colloquium with talks by our present fellows. Date: 17/10/2024 Time: 16h45 Venue: New Institute Building (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien, HS 2G Abstract: In this talk, I will explain the significance of conceptual pluralism for formal philosophy, arguing that this position can serve as a desirable paradigm. I will first show that conceptual pluralism is a reasonable position to take, given that it is often underdetermined which formalization best captures an ordinary concept. Afterwards, I will argue that it is important for formal philosophy to block out the intuitions associated with ordinary concepts. One of the hallmarks of formal philosophy is the formalization of philosophical concepts. Conceptual pluralism is the view that there are often multiple equally admissible formalizations of a concept. If this is the case, one needs to use further criteria, perhaps based on practical considerations, to determine which formalization to choose. What counts as the "best" formalization has to be spelled out in terms of normative requirements that a formalization has to meet. These depend on the particular goals that are pursued and the purpose for which the concept in question is intended. Formalizations thus have to be assessed based on their properties which make them more or less useful. Some ordinary concepts exhibit vagueness or open texture, which adds to the difficulty of giving a clear and precise definition for them. Formalizations often possess a degree of precision that is simply not present in ordinary concepts, which is why none of the formalizations are uniquely correct. They each differ from the ordinary concept in some way, capturing different aspects of it. For this reason, there are often multiple admissible formalizations. Issues like open texture arise from the mismatch between our intuitive expectation of how a formalization will capture an ordinary concept and the way that a formalization actually captures it. If the intuitive expectation is "blocked out", so to speak, it can be seen that the formal concept in itself is unproblematic and useful, even if it does not exactly capture the ordinary concept. For this reason, I will argue that it is preferable for formal philosophy to use stipulative rather than descriptive definitions. A stipulative definition does not aim to capture some preexisting concept accurately. Instead, the conditions of application that it contains are themselves definitive for how the concept ought to be understood and used.

The Academic Writing Workshop “From First to Final Draft: Revising Academic Texts” will focus on strategies for revising and finalizing academic texts. The workshop covers the different aspects and stages of reworking and revising academic texts at PhD level. This includes recognizing issues and translating feedback into concrete issues. We will cover structural revisions (paragraphs, connecting paragraphs, argumentation structure), reading flow, style (personal/impersonal, vague/precise), positioning (critique of sources, confident position), and succinctness (concise phrasing to reduce word count). The workshop is tailored to PhD-Students, but master’s students are also welcome to join. Liebe Kolleg_innen, wir möchten Sie herzlich zur nächsten Veranstaltung der Vortragsreihe „Phänomenologische Forschungen“ einladen: VORTRAG 24.10.2024, 18.30–20.00 Uhr, Hörsaal 3D, Institut für Philosophie, Universitätsstraße 7, A-1010 Wien Jakub Capek (Prag): „Phänomenologie der Wahrnehmung und Perspektivenwechsel (mit Merleau-Ponty)“ _Abstract: _ „Es ist eine Frage der Perspektive.“ Dieser Satz kann in einer Vielzahl von Situationen vorkommen. In der Lebensberatung kann er eine Ermutigung sein, die Sichtweise auf das eigene Leben zu ändern. In einer politischen Auseinandersetzung ist er eine Mahnung an den Gegner, dass seine Annahmen nicht selbstverständlich sind und sicher nicht von allen geteilt werden. Bei der Begegnung mit einer anderen Kultur ist es eine Erinnerung an die Relativität unserer eigenen Urteile. Wenn man in der Philosophie versucht, diese Erfahrungen der Perspektivität zu verallgemeinern und den Perspektivismus zu verteidigen, stößt man auf verschiedene Arten von Einwänden. Spätestens seit Nietzsche wird dem Perspektivismus ein erkenntnistheoretischer Skeptizismus und ein ethischer Relativismus vorgeworfen. Außerdem stellt sich die Frage, ob der Perspektivist seine Position verteidigen kann (und ob er nicht einen Widerspruch ähnlich dem Paradox des Lügners begeht). In meiner Überlegung zur „Frage der Perspektive“ werde ich von einer Analyse der Wahrnehmung ausgehen und dabei auf Merleau-Ponty zurückgreifen. Wir nehmen Dinge und Ereignisse immer aus einem bestimmten Blickwinkel und vor einem bestimmten Hintergrund wahr, die jedoch verändert werden können. Die Perspektive ist – im Laufe unserer Erfahrung – nicht ihr Thema. Aber sie kann zu einem werden, etwa in den oben genannten Situationen. Die Frage ist also, wie man sich der eigenen Perspektive bewusst wird und welche Konsequenzen dies hat. Der Gegenstand meiner Überlegungen ist also der Unterschied zwischen der Perspektivität der Erfahrung und der Erfahrung der Perspektivität. Das letztere weist auf die Möglichkeit eines Perspektivenwechsels. Foucault is generally perceived as a harsh critic of Marxism, both in terms of its analytical possibilities and political dangers. This contrasts strongly not only with Foucault's repeated emphasis on the centrality of Marx, but also with clear theoretical parallels. When Susan Stryker stood up at a Lesbian and Gay History conference in New York in 1995 and yelled “I am a transsexual and I am not sick!”, she reclaimed the participation of the transsexual intellectual in the production of truths, refuting discourses of dehumanization. This inaugural scene of Trans Studies places the undoing of epistemic violence as both a precondition and a fundamental commitment of trans theoretical practice. But what does this commitment to emancipatory forms of knowledge production entail? What are the contradictions of aspiring to anti-normative purity? What conversations can we build on the repeated condemnation of those reproducing symbolic violence? Does this commitment not miss the practical reason of cultural narratives? And is it possible to separate the epistemic violence from our sense of self, our needs and desires? Do the voices of trans people really hold the key to an emancipatory meaning? And if we betray the idea that we just need to let trans people speak, what then can hold the possibility of undoing epistemic violence? In this talk, I reflect on these questions based on my own research trajectory, which spans topics such as trans subcultural spaces, neuroscientific studies of (trans)gender identity and trans social reproduction in global capitalism. The talk traces the shifts of my theoretical practice by building a personal cartography of minor truths. I take the term “minor truths” from the title of a show by the artist Spence Messih. Their glasswork compositions and philosophical considerations introduce a phenomenological sensibility in my analysis, inspiring me to search for a language that reflects the inseparability of theoretical standpoint from affective states, social relationships and political conjunctures. In conversation with Messih’s work, the talk evolves in a non-linear motion connecting five modes of epistemic experience: abstraction, vulnerability, praxeology, dialogue and betrayal. Bio: Eric Llaveria Caselles is a PhD Candidate at the Center for Interdisciplinary Women and Gender Studies (ZIFG) at the Technical University Berlin. His recent publications explore the limitations of gender identity positivism and queer deconstructivism as the two main approaches to trans theory. His research builds on current trans Marxist proposals and historical materialist traditions of gender theory to set the groundwork for an alternative framework in Trans Studies. Dear All, On behalf of the Young Academy of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, it is my pleasure to invite you to the next edition of the Young Academy Distinguished Lecture Series, which will take place on Wednesday, 9th October 2024, at 5p.m. in the Festsaal of the main building of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Doktor-Ignaz-Seipel-Platz 2). The topic is: "The Boundaries of Mathematics: From Gödel to the Study of Large Infinities" Mathematics is known as an exact science: Every statement seems to be true or false in the sense that it can be proved or disproved. Kurt Gödel shocked the mathematical community in the 1930s by showing that there are mathematical statements that can neither be proved nor disproved. While his example was of theoretical nature, we now know several examples from mathematical practice. In particular, the study of large infinities is full of unprovable statements, thus pointing beyond mathematics into the realm of philosophy. The lecture will shed light on the origins of Gödel's incompleteness theorem and discuss the latest research on unprovable statements, especially in the study of large infinities. The speakers are: - Jan von Plato, logician and historian of science at the University of Helsinki, - W. Hugh Woodin, Professor of Philosophy and Mathematics at Harvard University and expert in axiomatic set theory, - Sandra Müller, member of the Young Academy of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and mathematician at the TU Wien. The discussion will be moderated by Anne Sophie Meincke, philosopher at the University of Vienna and member of the Young Academy. The Boundaries of Mathematics - Young Academy Distinguished Lecture on 9th October 2024 at 5pm

Dear All, On behalf of the Young Academy of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, it is my pleasure to invite you to the next edition of the Young Academy Distinguished Lecture Series, which will take place on Wednesday, 9th October 2024, at 5p.m. in the Sitzungssaal of the main building of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Doktor-Ignaz-Seipel-Platz 2). The topic is: "The Boundaries of Mathematics: From Gödel to the Study of Large Infinities" Mathematics is known as an exact science: Every statement seems to be true or false in the sense that it can be proved or disproved. Kurt Gödel shocked the mathematical community in the 1930s by showing that there are mathematical statements that can neither be proved nor disproved. While his example was of theoretical nature, we now know several examples from mathematical practice. In particular, the study of large infinities is full of unprovable statements, thus pointing beyond mathematics into the realm of philosophy. The lecture will shed light on the origins of Gödel's incompleteness theorem and discuss the latest research on unprovable statements, especially in the study of large infinities. The speakers are: - Jan von Plato, logician and historian of science at the University of Helsinki, - W. Hugh Woodin, Professor of Philosophy and Mathematics at Harvard University and expert in axiomatic set theory, - Sandra Müller, member of the Young Academy of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and mathematician at the TU Wien. Dear all, it is my pleasure to invite you to the third installment of the Trans*formations talk series organized by the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy, University of Vienna, which provides insights into recent developments in trans* philosophizing. This time, Eric Llaveria Caselles, currently working at the Center for Interdisciplinary Women and Gender Studies (ZIFG) at the Technical University Berlin, will give a talk titled "Epistemic Violence and Trans Theory. A Cartography of Minor Truths." When: Friday, October 18th 2024 15:00 - 16:30 Where: HS 3B, 3. Stock Neues Institutsgebäude (NIG), Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien Abstract: For the transsexual subject to be able to emerge as a source of credible speech, a fundamental critique of the western epistemic and symbolic order had to gain traction. When Susan Stryker stood up at a Lesbian and Gay History conference in New York in 1995 and yelled “I am a transsexual and I am not sick!”, she reclaimed the participation of the transsexual intellectual in the production of truths, refuting discourses of dehumanization. This inaugural scene of Trans Studies places the undoing of epistemic violence as both a precondition and a fundamental commitment of trans theoretical practice. But what does this commitment to emancipatory forms of knowledge production entail? What are the contradictions of aspiring to anti-normative purity? What conversations can we build on the repeated condemnation of those reproducing symbolic violence? Does this commitment not miss the practical reason of cultural narratives? And is it possible to separate the epistemic violence from our sense of self, our needs and desires? Do the voices of trans people really hold the key to an emancipatory meaning? And if we betray the idea that we just need to let trans people speak, what then can hold the possibility of undoing epistemic violence? In this talk, I reflect on these questions based on my own research trajectory, which spans topics such as trans subcultural spaces, neuroscientific studies of (trans)gender identity and trans social reproduction in global capitalism. The talk traces the shifts of my theoretical practice by building a personal cartography of minor truths. I take the term “minor truths” from the title of a show by the artist Spence Messih. Their glasswork compositions and philosophical considerations introduce a phenomenological sensibility in my analysis, inspiring me to search for a language that reflects the inseparability of theoretical standpoint from affective states, social relationships and political conjunctures. In conversation with Messih’s work, the talk evolves in a non-linear motion connecting five modes of epistemic experience: abstraction, vulnerability, praxeology, dialogue and betrayal. Bio: Eric Llaveria Caselles is a PhD Candidate at the Center for Interdisciplinary Women and Gender Studies (ZIFG) at the Technical University Berlin. His recent publications explore the limitations of gender identity positivism and queer deconstructivism as the two main approaches to trans theory. His research builds on current trans Marxist proposals and historical materialist traditions of gender theory to set the groundwork for an alternative framework in Trans Studies. Ramsey argued that defining it would be easy if only we had an analysis of judgement. Today Horwich claims that truth cannot be defined explicitly because doing so would require quantification into sentence position and such quantification is not coherent. Instead he proposes a "minimal theory" of truth, which comprises all the unproblematic instances of the equivalence schema. Künne, by contrast, argues that quantification into sentence position is coherent and may actually be part of some natural languages. Künne uses such quantification to define truth explicitly: ∀x (x is true iff ∃p ((x is the proposition that p) & p)). Or in English: a representation (belief, assertion etc) is true just if things are as it represents them as being. Künne claims also to find this definition in Frank Ramsey's posthumous work, which, as an exegetical claim, is not uncontroversial. Is truth definable? Is propositional quantification coherent? Do natural languages involve propositional quantification, and in what sense? What do the answers to these questions mean for philosophical attempts to define or explain truth? Is truth redundant if explicitly definable? Not redundant if not explicitly definable? We are interested in these and related questions (broadly conceived). This workshop is supported by the FWF Cluster of Excellence project "Knowledge in Crisis", the FWF project "Truth is Grounded in Facts" and the University of Vienna.

Perspectives from Kantian Political Theory Introduction The news reminds us every day that, unfortunately, peace remains a topic as relevant as ever. Recently, questions about what can justify war, what is justified in war, and how to establish peace, have again attracted the attention of political theorists. Their works rely crucially on the political theory of Immanuel Kant. Whereas there is considerable consensus in the literature about Kant's position on war, there is still sharp disagreement about Kant's related views about the establishment of peace. The aim of this workshop is to research this disagreement and to further clarify Kant's position on the institutions of peace. Why the Discipline Needs this Workshop The question of peace and its institutions is currently a topical issue. However, important aspects of this topic still await clarification. How, precisely, to define peace? And how is peace best established (Hathaway and Shapiro 2017)? Is peace always preferable to conflict (Margalit 2013; Forst 2011)? The recent literature on war and peace (Huber 2022; Ripstein 2021a, Niesen 2021) relies critically on Kant's notion of the state, and his understanding of both international and cosmopolitan law. Unclear, however, is what the establishment of peace requires, as part of a Kantian approach. Is a full-blown 'world federation' necessary, as some (Kleingeld 2004) argue? Others (Ripstein 2009, p. 227-228) think Kant's theory lacks 'the resources to argue for either an executive or a legislative international body.' This workshop addresses these and related issues with which the discipline is currently grappling. What has become clear to Kantian scholars, is that to shed light on these questions, it is neccesary to understand how national law, international law and cosmopolitan law should work together as one system of public law. However, scholars disagree about the status of the rather restricted rights and duties of international and cosmopolitan law that Kant mentions (Huber 2022). Are these rights and duties already 'public' and 'peremptory' (Ripstein 2021b) or perhaps still 'natural' and 'provisional', in need of further institutional development (Niesen 2021)? We invite scholars in all career stages and also from backgrounds traditionally marginalized to send working papers on these issues. The aim is to publish accepted papers. The Workshop Will Address Questions such as: What constitutes peace? Is peace best advanced by transferring more powers from the nation state to the institutions of international and cosmopolitan unions, such as the United Nations and the European Union, or is peace perhaps undermined by the further strengthening of international and transnational authorities? Dear all, You are cordially invited to the conference "At the Limits of Imagination: Otherness in Humans & Nonhuman Animals" 26-28 September 2024 Neues Institutsgebäude, Universitätsstraße 7, Lecture Hall 3D (3rd floor) Keynote speaker: Alice Crary (The New School for Social Research) This three-day conference will focus on the possibilities and limits of imagination and empathy with regards to humans and non-human animals, and on the tensions inherent in comparing or comparatively analyzing both groups. Imagined similarities and dissimilarities play a pivotal role in ethical theories with regards to treatment of both human and non-human groups.It has been argued, for example, that racialized and disabled people, and nonhuman animals, have been discriminated against according to the same logic that grounds inclusion and exclusion upon the possession of certain distinctively human ‘abilities’: rationality, language, autonomy, agency, etc. (e.g., Crary 2016; Taylor 2018; Crary and Gruen 2022).The presumed absence of these ‘abilities’ is equated with a negative and inferior form of embodiment, against which the human norm has in turn been defined. However, conflating their respective ethical status also risks reinforcing the dehumanization of those human groups by instrumentalizing their oppression in the service of animals (Boisseron2019; Crary 2016; Kittay 2019). This conference, organized by Martin Huth, Carlo Salzani, and Ruadhán J. Frege argued that it couldn't. Ramsey argued that defining it would be easy if only we had an analysis of judgement. Today Horwich claims that truth cannot be defined explicitly because doing so would require quantification into sentence position and such quantification is not coherent. Instead he proposes a "minimal theory" of truth, which comprises all the unproblematic instances of the equivalence schema. Künne, by contrast, argues that quantification into sentence position is coherent and may actually be part of some natural languages. Künne uses such quantification to define truth explicitly: ∀x (x is true iff ∃p ((x is the proposition that p) & p)). Or in English: a representation (belief, assertion etc) is true just if things are as it represents them as being. Künne claims also to find this definition in Frank Ramsey's posthumous work, which, as an exegetical claim, is not uncontroversial. Is truth definable? Is propositional quantification coherent? Do natural languages involve propositional quantification, and in what sense? What do the answers to these questions mean for philosophical attempts to define or explain truth? Is truth redundant if explicitly definable? Not redundant if not explicitly definable? We are interested in these and related questions (broadly conceived). This workshop is supported by the FWF Cluster of Excellence project "Knowledge in Crisis", the FWF project "Truth is Grounded in Facts" and the University of Vienna.

CfA: Winter School 2024 | ECPR Standing Group on Kantian Political Thought | The Keele-Oxford-St Andrews Kantian (KOSAK) Research Centre WINTER SCHOOL: KANTIAN POLITICAL THOUGHT TODAY Sessions will be led by: Pauline Kleingeld (University of Groningen), Stefanie Grüne (University of Cologne), Eric Watkins (University of California), Marcus Willaschek (Goethe-Universität Frankfurt), Luigi Caranti (University of Catania) and Sorin Baiasu (Keele University). 10 December - 12 December, hybrid event, at the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR), Harbour House, Colchester The ECPR'S Kantian Standing Group, in association with the Keele-Oxford-St Andrews Kantian (KOSAK) Research Centre@Keele University and the University of Vienna, invites registrations for its hybrid Winter School which explores the relevance of Kantian political thought in addressing pressing global challenges of our time such as environment, climate change, world poverty, human rights, toleration, pandemic, AI, and migration, among others. Approximately 15-20 postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers are invited to participate to 3 days of themed sessions and discussions with the additional option of giving a presentation and receiving feedback from expert scholars leading the sessions. Please note: this year, the Winter School will be followed by the _'Rousseau' Annual Lecture and Conference_, on 12-13 December.
