Philosophy as Conceptual Engagement: The Concepts We Have and the
Concepts We Want
8 PhD- Positions
The FWF doc.funds project PACE at the University of Vienna
(pace.phl.univie.ac.at/ <http://pace.phl.univie.ac.at/>) is filling up
to 8 predoctoral positions at the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy
(VDP, vd-philosophy.univie.ac.at/ <http://vd-philosophy.univie.ac.at/>).
PACE examines questions about the subject matter and the methods of
philosophy, exploring in particular the hypothesis that philosophy often
involves conceptual engagement (see project description
<https://pace.phl.univie.ac.at/pace-the-project/>).
The successful candidate(s) will enroll in the University of Vienna
doctoral programme in philosophy and join the VDP. They can pursue a
doctoral research project in any area of philosophy, using any
philosophical method. They will, as part of the project PACE, be
expected to conduct their research with special attention to their own
method, and also to participate in discussions on philosophical method.
The main duties are:
* to develop a PhD research plan and have it approved by the doctoral
board within the first 12 months.
* to sign a supervision agreement within the first 12-18 months, which
sets out the trajectory to successful completion of the research.
* to complete some coursework in line with the doctoral programme (at
least 24 ECTS).
* to participate actively in VDP and PACE research activities.
* to contribute to the organization of VDP and PACE events, such as
seminars, workshops, conferences, and summer schools.
* to complete and submit the doctoral thesis within four years.
There are no teaching duties associated with these positions but there
will be some opportunities to teach certain undergraduate courses in the
department (for extra pay).
These are four-year positions with a gross monthly salary of around 2458
Euros. In Austria 14 monthly salaries are paid out in a year. (Net
salaries can be calculated on this page:
onlinerechner.haude.at/BMF-Brutto-Netto-Rechner/.
<https://onlinerechner.haude.at/BMF-Brutto-Netto-Rechner/>) Funding is
available for conference trips and stays abroad. The contracts are
initially for two years and will be renewed for another two years after
successful completion of the first two years, including approval of the
research plan.
Applications should contain the following documents (in pdf-format) and
should be sent by 31 May 2023 to Raphael Aybar, the VDP-coordinator, on
vd.philosophy(a)univie.ac.at:
1. a cover letter (anonymized) mentioning two potential supervisors
from the VDP faculty
<https://vd-philosophy.univie.ac.at/people/faculty/>, including at
least one from among the PACE faculty
<https://pace.phl.univie.ac.at/faculty/>.
2. a CV (anonymized), containing at least the following rubrics:
academic qualifications, areas of expertise and competence,
publications (if any), presentations (if any), admin/organizational
experience (if any), career breaks (if any).
3. a PhD research proposal (anonymized), of no more than three pages
length.
4. one or two writing samples (anonymized), of a maximum of 5000 words
length each.
5. degree certificates and academic transcripts.
6. a document containing identifying information as well as contacts
for two people who can provide a letter of reference (letters of
reference will be requested only after shortlisting).
NB: documents 1–4. must be anonymized in order to allow for an anonymous
first round of selection.
Selection Process: We expect to shortlist candidates for interview by 15
June and hold online interviews on 5, 6 and 7 of July 2023.
IMPORTANT. If your application is successful and you accept a position
at the University of Vienna, you will need to move to Vienna before you
can start the employment. You will need to submit degree certificates
and transcripts that have the required legalization. Degree certificates
or transcripts that are not in German or English must be translated into
one of these two languages. The translation must be done by a court
sworn translator after the documents have been legalized.
Any questions can be directed to the VDP coordinator Raphael Aybar at
vd.philosophy(a)univie.ac.at and will if necessary be forwarded to the
relevant person.

Futures Past
Feminism and the Radical Democratic Imaginary
International Essay Workshop
University of Vienna, Department of Political Science
July 6-7th, 2023
Conveners: Linda Zerilli & Oliver Marchart
Chicago–Vienna Faculty Grant & ERC Research Project Prefiguring Democratic Futures
Aims and rationale
The political history of Western feminism is typically described as encompassing various “waves” of theory and practice, with each wave building on, but also going beyond, an earlier wave. Thus, the second wave (1968-1980s) is seen as taking up and radicalizing the first wave (1848-1920) struggle for political rights by expanding the concept of rights and of politics itself beyond the confines of the formal political sphere; the third wave (1991-?) is seen as taking up and radicalizing the second wave’s concept of “women” as the political subject of feminism. Handy though this periodization may be, it has left many feminists wondering which wave they are in anymore. Some feminists argue that the various waves have given way to “intersectional feminism.” Still, that description does not address the fundamental question of what kind of critical political work the concept of a “wave” was supposed to do in the first place. It was not until 1968 that people started talking about feminism in terms of different waves, and that feminism came to be understood as having a history at all. This shift allowed feminists to root their political demand for change in a historical democratic struggle for social justice, not least as a way of countering the popular view of the women’s liberation movement as an impossibly utopian project made up by a bunch of social malcontents.
In the workshop, we want to reflect on this periodization of feminism critically and explore how conceptualizations of the past shape imaginative visions of possible futures. How we understand the past directly affects what can count as a “realistic” course of social, political, and economic activity. Furthermore, our conception of the past is shaped by a projected future, and different societies have different ways of imagining the relations between their future and the past. Originating in the revolutionary eighteenth century, Western feminism’s conceptualization of this relation, its own “futures past” (to speak with Reinhard Koselleck), is characterized by an anticipatory and distinctively modern temporality that assumes the novelty and openness of the future. If the history of feminism calls at times for rewriting, that is less because new facts are discovered than because the ever-changing present opens new perspectives on the past and makes new demands on what it can mean. As a result, the past is figured more in terms of projected futures than fidelity to how things were. For this reason, feminist historiography is rife with debates about whose story is told, and the idea of a “wave” itself has been criticized as overly generalizing in ways that blind us to the far more fraught and complex histories not captured in its conceptual net.
Thus, the workshop will provide space for scrutinizing the conceptual problems associated with producing historical knowledge and forms of periodization concerning feminist political futures. It is based on the premise that emancipatory politics is best described as an ongoing creation of the social-historical world, animated by collective radical imagination. Contributions will explore how an emerging new social movement like feminism developed alternative temporalities in response to the rapidly unfolding political crises of the time (e.g., the Vietnam War, nuclear arms race, the Cold War, desegregation and racial terror, and anti-colonial struggles).
Like the new left politics in which many cut their political teeth, feminists sought to reveal a hegemonic order in which democracy had been hollowed out. But also, like the other new social movements (e.g., Black Power, the student movement, environmentalism, and radical pacifism) that arose in the 60s and 70s in both Europe and the United States, feminist visions of social change have been accused of being naïve forms of utopianism doomed to founder on the shoals of political reality.
Contributions are welcome that discuss diverse texts and practices in which utopian visions were articulated in temporal terms as forms of public freedom, as creative action, and as “prefigurative politics.” No mere means to an end already secured by the linear movement of universal history itself, prefigurative politics aims at creating “figures of the newly thinkable” (Castoriadis) in the here and now, both as a way to interpret the past and imagine different feminist futures critically.
Contributions can be motivated, for instance, by the following set of questions:
* In what ways has feminism’s radical political imaginary been enabled and constrained by a specific practice of historiography?
* To what extent are the progressivism and presentism that tends to characterize contemporary feminism’s relation to its past a problem for its future?
* In what ways and to what extent are feminist struggles embedded within an emancipatory project of a radical democracy?
* How has feminism’s political imaginary been challenged and reconfigured, for instance, in the context of Black feminist criticism?
* How can a critically renewed historiography of feminist struggles enrich today’s feminist movements and contribute to the collective emancipatory effort to radicalize democracy?
* In short: What are the “futures past” of feminism, and how do they speak to us today?
Format
We strive towards creating a workshop atmosphere that allows for serious, productive, and collaborative engagement with each other’s work. Workshop participants send in an essay (max. 3000 words, deadline: June 15, 2023), with the expectation that all of the papers are read in advance. In addition, each participant will prepare and present a commentary on one of the other papers. Each session begins with a brief opening statement by the author(s) on the background of the text (5 min), followed by a commentary (10 min) that opens the general discussion of the text.
Venue and Accommodation
The workshop will take place in person at the University of Vienna. Online participation is not possible. There is no participation fee. The organizers are happy to give recommendations regarding travel arrangements.
Publication
We plan to publish the workshop’s proceedings as a special issue in a peer-reviewed journal and/or edited volume.

Dear Sir or Madam,
we would like to inform you about our upcoming Summer School on "Dual
Use and Misuse of Research Results (DURC)". The Summer School will take
place in Jülich, Germany from 17 to 21 July 2023. It is funded by the
German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and organised
by the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine 7: Brain and Behaviour at
Research Center Jülich. Please find attached our announcement (Call for
Abstracts).
The summer school offers international junior researchers/scientists
from different disciplines the opportunity to present their own work and
research projects on the topic and to discuss dual use and misuse of
research results and their ethical, legal, social, and political aspects
in exchange with each other and with internationally renowned experts.
We consider it very important to draw the attention of as many research
institutions as possible to our event so that we can reach young
researchers from different disciplines.
If there are any young researchers in your team who might be interested
in actively participating in the Summer School, we would be grateful if
you could pass on our attached Call for Abstracts with the extended
deadline.
We thank you in advance for your interest and support.

/*Theistic fallacies. What are the epistemic problems with irenic
approaches in the philosophy of religion?*/
Theism argues for the existence of a single transcendent personal god
who is a creator and governor of the world. Theism does not identify
itself with any religion in particular since it maintains that it can
establish the essential core of religious beliefs, or at least of the
‘monotheistic’ beliefs. R. Swinburne, or differently, J. Hick suppose
that ‘central’ religious tenets are rational, that is, logically
justifiable, and that the tenets are consistent. Consequently, theism
supports the widespread opinion that the ‘monotheistic’ religions
worship the same god and that religious differences are the result of
diverse historical developments. In my talk, I will challenge this
program by showing that the ‘core identity’ assumption founders on
epistemic logic, in particular, because of the Hooded Man (cognosco
venientem) paradox. Establishing the ‘rational core doctrine’ is shown
to be an illusion because of the non-substitutivity of identicals in
epistemic (or intensional) contexts. Medieval theologians (e.g. Walter
Burleigh or Albert of Saxony) were aware of this problem and offered
criteria for correct inferences. In the end, I plead that religious
tolerance can only be based on developments internal to the different
religions.

Dear all,
we are looking forward to your participation in the inaugural workshop
of the newly founded Critical Political Epistemology Network! Please
feel free to forward it to all those who could be interested.
Here is the call:
Call for Participation – Critical Political Epistemology Network
Inaugural Workshop on the 25th and 26th of May 2023
The goal of this workshop is to establish an international research
network to foster alliances in the field of critical political
epistemology (CPE). CPE analyzes how questions around knowledge, power,
governance, politics, oppression, and ignorance intersect, such as: How
do forms of political resistance generate collective knowledge? Who is
understood to be a political, epistemic agent? How do relations and
structures of power impact which and whose political interests become
knowable, and to whom? How do counter-knowledges create resistance to
oppression?
Potential topics of interest include but are not limited to:
• Social movements and activism
• The epistemic role, power, and authority of political parties
• Social categories and their impact on knowledge, ignorance, and power
• Marginalization and its effect on epistemic practices
• (Re-)Distribution of material and epistemic capital
These topics will be analyzed from different disciplinary perspectives.
As an inter- and transdisciplinary research network, CPE expands and
links questions, lines of inquiry, and methods in social and political
epistemology. We aim to bring together people from different epistemic
communities and focus on critical, non-ideal theorizing that is situated
in material and praxis-oriented analysis of prevailing epistemic and
political structures.
The workshop has two main goals. The first is to create an international
network for collaborative forms of knowledge production. Our hope is to
serve as a space to engage in epistemic practices that are not
exclusively centered around the individual nor confined to the
university. The second is to produce a statement of purpose that
delineates core questions and future aims of the CPE Network.
On the first day of the workshop, the coordinating committee – Melanie
Altanian (she/her, University College Dublin), Solmu Anttila (they/them,
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), Stephanie Deig (she/they, Universität
Luzern), Flora Löffelmann (they/them, Universität Wien) and Sonja
Riegler (she/they, Universität Wien) – will present and invite feedback
on a preliminary statement of purpose for the CPE Network. We will then
form collaborative
working groups that explore the relation of different themes, questions,
and challenges. On the second day of the workshop, the results of these
groups will be collectively discussed and incorporated into the
statement of purpose. The resulting collaboratively written text will
provide a foundation for further work in this field.
We encourage applications from relevant subfields in philosophy that
include but are not limited to epistemology, political theory and
philosophy, critical theory, philosophy of language, phenomenology,
queer philosophy, and feminist philosophy. We also welcome applications
from the humanities and social sciences, e.g., sociology and social
theory, science and technology studies, critical race studies, gender
studies, discourse studies, history, decolonial and postcolonial
studies, genocide studies, legal studies, political economy, social
psychology, media and communication science, political science and art
history. We also strongly encourage activists, science communicators,
policy analysts, artists, educators, and others who are interested in
CPE to apply.
Please submit a CV and a short letter of motivation (approximately one
page) to cpenetwork(a)proton.me indicating how your research, political or
artistic work and/or everyday experience address pertinent questions in
CPE. We invite interested persons to apply by the 19th of March, 2023.
Accepted participants will be notified by the 4th of April, 2023. Travel
and accommodation funding up to € 200 is available for those who do not
have institutional support. Please indicate in your application if you
need financial assistance, and if it might exceed the funds available.
The organizers are committed to making this workshop an accessible space
and share the goal of dismantling the exclusionary mechanisms at work in
the field of academic philosophy. We especially encourage persons from
marginalized and underrepresented groups to apply, e.g. BIPoC, LGBTQAI+
people, economically marginalized people and disabled persons.
The workshop will take place in person on the 25th and 26th of May, 2023
at the Universität Wien. The venue is wheelchair accessible.
We thank the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy, the APSE Group, the
Institute of Philosophy (Universität Wien) and the Faculty of Social
Sciences and Humanities at the Universität Luzern for their financial
support.

The title of the program reflects the heritage of the Vienna Circle which promoted interdisciplinary and philosophical investigations based on solid disciplinary knowledge.
Climate science, understood as an interdisciplinary field of study of the Earth’s climate and the causes and effects of climate change, is clearly of central importance today. The summer school will explore climate studies from a historical, philosophical, and sociological perspective. Topics to be covered will include: foundations and methodological issues relating to climate science, including various definitions of climate change, different types of models of climate change, and the use of simulations; further, historical roots and the development of climate science before and after the “computer age”; finally, issues concerning science policy and the communication of findings of climate science to a general public.
Topics will be selected reflecting participants’ interests and may include:
• Defining climate and climate change
• Evidence for climate change
• Modelling climate change: issues of confirmation and prediction
• Climate change and decision theory
• History of climate science as a research program
• Climate science in the public debate

Subject: CEU Summer School on Contemporary Issues in Ontology and Social
Ontology
Date: 27.01.2023 09:07
From: "International Social Ontology Society" <ISOS(a)wildapricot.org>
Reply-To: "Asya Passinsky" <asyapass(a)gmail.com>
Central European University is offering a summer course on
“Contemporary Issues in Ontology and Social Ontology [1]”. The
course will be held July 17th to July 28th, 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.
The faculty includes Mark Balaguer (Cal State LA), Talia Bettcher (Cal
State LA), Åsa Burman (Stockholm), Esa Díaz-León (Barcelona), Alex
Grzankowski (Birkbeck), Ferenc Huoranszki (CEU), Michaela McSweeney
(Boston), and Asya Passinsky (CEU).
Course description: Philosophers are becoming increasingly interested in
real-world problems and in how their discipline is relevant to these
problems. The recent explosion of interest in social ontology is part of
a movement in philosophy to come down out of the ivory tower and engage
with issues that actually matter—issues concerning, e.g., race,
gender, and social justice. This course will introduce students to
ontology, and to social ontology in particular, by delving deeply into
numerous important issues in the field. Specific topics to be covered
in the course include the following: social justice, social
construction, groups, social structures, ideal vs. non-ideal social
ontology, social power, essentialism as it relates to social groups and
genders, metaphysical grounding in the social realm, issues pertaining
to mental health and moral responsibility, social theories of art,
rationality, and mental content, and issues in meta social ontology.
We invite applications from graduate students, postdocs, and faculty in
philosophy. A few places for advanced undergraduate students will also
be available. The application deadline is February 14th, 2023.
For more information and details on how to apply, please visit the
course website [1].

Dear all, please be invited to the following two events:
Barbara Muraca: Why protect nature? The multiple values of human-nature
relationships and their relevance for policy
Date: January 25, 2023
Time: 20:00 – 21.30
Location: Zoom
Sign-up: eva.hijlkema(a)univie.ac.at
Barbara Muraca is a Professor of Philosophy at The University of Oregon.
Her research focuses on Environmental and Social Philosophy, Process
Philosophy, and Political Ecology. Prior to working at University of
Oregon she was Assistant Professor of Environmental and Social
Philosophy at Oregon State University and Senior Researcher (Post-Doc)
at the Center for Advanced Studies 'Post-growth Societies' at the
Institute of Sociology of the University of Jena, Germany. From 2014 to
2020 she was co-director of the International Association for
Environmental Philosophy (IAEP). Since Summer 2018 she is a Lead Author
of the IPBES assessment on multiple values of nature (Intergovernmental
Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services).
Abstract:
For decades the question about why nature should be protected has had
two different answers: because nature matters for its own sake
(intrinsic value), independent of how it affects people, or because of
the benefits people derive from interacting with nature (instrumental
value). While the first perspective rejects instrumental justifications
for conservation and considers anthropocentrism as part of the problem,
the second one highlights anthropocentric arguments and employs economic
valuation to assess the importance of ecosystems to people. But does it
have to be one or the other? Recent research suggests a third
possibility: protecting nature because of the meaningful relationships
that connect people to nature, and to each other through nature. These
so-called relational values remain anthropocentric, but are not
instrumental justifications for conservation. Since its development, the
relational value framework has proven relevant for policy and in
valuation studies across disciplines and has been adopted by the
Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services
(IPBES). The lecture will present the policy relevance of this old
debate in environmental ethics and embed it into the way in which IPBES
operates at the global level.
