Public Event: AI and the Problems of Knowledge

Dear all, The Knowledge in Crisis<https://philosophy.ceu.edu/knowledge-crisis-project> Cluster of Excellence is hosting its first public event on AI and the Problems of Knowledge this November 16th. Event Description: Artificial Intelligence is in the process of transforming our society. But it also has profound implications for our methods of knowledge production and consumption. The products of recent AI machines like ChatGPT are linguistically impressive and convincing - but they are also full of factual errors which their creators euphemistically (and misleadingly) call 'hallucinations'. Given the extent to which we are starting to rely on AI, the question arises: how can we trust any of its outputs? How do we know what to believe? Is this is technical problem or a social and epistemological one? Technology is also beginning to change our conception of knowledge itself. If someone asks you whether you know a friend's phone number, you may say yes and reach for your phone. Do you really know it in this situation? And if so, what does this say about the concept of knowledge? These and other questions will be introduced in a public discussion, the first public event of the Knowledge in Crisis Cluster of Excellence. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Tim Crane, Director of Research for the Knowledge in Crisis Project, and the author of the leading textbook on the philosophy of mind and AI, The Mechanical Mind (first edition 1995, third edition 2014). *Call For Papers: Special issue of Research Ethics on dual use,****misuse, and research ethics*** The possibility of dual use and misuse of research results ("dual use research of concern (DURC)") posesseveralethical and legal challenges for researchers, research institutions and research funding institutions. On the one hand, it raises an ethical dilemma between ensuring freedom of research andminimizingthe possibility of misuse. On the other hand, the possibility of misuse is often theflip sideofsocially beneficialresearchresults. Dear Colleagues, The Reading Circle of the Research Group "Poststructuralism, Gender Theory, Psychoanalysis" at the University of Vienna cordially invites you to the next public event: Alexis Shotwell (Carleton University Ottawa): "Working or playing at freedom" Friday, October 20th 2023, 6-8pm, Hörsaal 2G (NIG), Department of Philosophy (and online) Lecture and Discussion Abstract: Ursula Le Guin thinks of freedom as an ongoing process, a practice rather than an achievement, something to be worked on rather than won. While our freedom can be stolen from us, in her work, it cannot be given to us: we each must manifest it through our unique, specific lives. Such freedom, she argues, is only really available in societies organized around justice and mutual aid. It does not fully exist yet. Perhaps along the way to social relations not organized to benefit some and oppress many, practicing freedom can open more possibilities for us individually and for our collective worlds. Because the work of creating such freedom is ongoing, Le Guin and others conceive of freedom as something we build in an ongoing way - we never stop working on it. The worry about such a accounts: They may reinforce ableist and productivist normative commitments that bolster capitalist value structures. In this paper, I elaborate those worries, and think with Le Guin and others about the connections among freedom, the idea that we each have worth in virtue of our uniqueness, and the promise of idle play as a form of creating beauty. Alexis Shotwell is a professor at Carleton University, on unceded Algonquin territory. She is the co-investigator for the AIDS Activist History Project, and author of _Knowing Otherwise: Race, Gender, and Implicit Understanding _and _Against Purity: Living Ethically in Compromised Times_. *IWM Lectures in Human Sciences with Seyla Benhabib* The intense interest in cosmopolitanism in the social and political sciences, cultural and legal studies dates back to the last two decades of the twentieth century. With the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the reunification of Germany, and the extension of the European Union to east and central European countries formerly under Communist rule, the Kantian cosmopolitan ideal of uniting diverse countries under the rule of law, respect for human rights and the free exchange of goods and services seemed to come alive. By the beginning of the new century, cosmopolitanism had fallen on hard times. This series will defend cosmopolitanism from below by engaging with the postcolonial critiques of Kantian thought, voiced by James Tully, Inez Valdez, Sylvia Wynter, and Walter Mignolo. The three lectures bearing the overarching title "The Changing Fortunes of Cosmopolitanism: Demos, Cosmos and Globus" will be held on 5, 11, and 19 October 2023 at the University of Vienna*. Der Technik kommt hier eine ambivalente Rolle zu. Einerseits trägt ihr Einsatz zu den Krisen bei, bringt sie zum Teil sogar hervor, andererseits steht Technik auch im Mittelpunkt von Visionen einer besseren, egalitären Zukunft. Überzeugt von der Relevanz einer transdiziplinären und vielschichtigen Betrachtung dieser komplexen Phänomene, fördert “Islands of Resilience” die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Wissenschaftler:innen, Künstler:innen, Aktivist:innen und anderen gesellschaftlichen Akteuren. Ziel des Projekts ist es, über die Kritik bestehender Verhältnisse hinaus zu gehen und Visionen für eine wünschenswerte Zukunft zu entwerfen sowie Wege aufzuzeigen, diese explizit zu machen. Wir wollen zum Prozess der Suche nach Antworten beitragen auf die Fragen: Wie navigieren wir gemeinsam in Richtung zukunftsfähiger Gemeinschaften? Welche Technologien können nach der Absage der Internet-Revolution heute Träger emanzipatorischer politischer Visionen sein und uns dabei helfen, Krisen zu bewältigen und wie wirken wir in Richtung besserer soziotechnischer Systeme? Welche Rolle kann und soll Wissenschaft und Kunst in Hinblick auf die politischen Aspekte technologischer Umwälzungen spielen? Dabei fragen wir an den zwei Veranstaltungstagen performativ nach den Potenzialen einer Public Philosophy und erforschen die Bedeutung kollektiver Imaginationsprozesse und Räume, um damit Impulse für das Aufbrechen und Erweitern herkömmlicher Strukturen des Nachdenkens über Zukunft zu setzen. Islands of Resilience – Public Philosophy for the Future We are currently living in a situation that can be described as a polycrisis: From the effects of the climate crisis, to unstable financial and economic developments, war and pandemics, to technological upheavals in the world of work and our educational institutions. Technology has an ambivalent role to play here. On the one hand, its use contributes to the crises, in some cases even creates them; on the other hand, technology is also at the heart of visions of a better, more egalitarian future. Convinced of the relevance of a transdisciplinary and multi-layered approach to these complex phenomena, "Islands of Resilience" promotes collaboration between scientists, artists, activists and other social actors. The aim of the project is to go beyond the critique of existing conditions and to create visions for a desirable future as well as to develop ways to make them explicit. We want to contribute to the process of finding answers to the questions: How do we navigate together towards sustainable communities? After the rejection of the internet revolution, which technologies can be carriers of emancipatory political visions today and help us to overcome crises, and how do we work towards better socio-technical systems? What role can, and should science and art play with regard to the political aspects of technological upheavals? During the two days of the event, we will performatively inquire into the potentials of a public philosophy and explore the significance of collective imaginative processes and spaces in order to set impulses for breaking up and extending conventional structures in thinking about the future. Reminder, World Congress of Philosophy, Section (50) "Philosophy & Psychoanalysis", 1.-8. August 2024

From August 1, 2024 to August 8, 2024 the 25th World Congress of Philosophy will take place in Rome, Italy. The title of the congress is “Philosophy Across Boundaries”. For the Thematic Section (50) “Philosophy & Psychoanalysis ” contributions with a maximum length of 1800 words, together with an abstract of 200 words and up to five keywords can be submitted. Contributions on all subjects and areas of the relation between philosophy and psychoanalysis are welcome. In particular contributions that deal with feminist/intersectional and phenomenological perspectives in the field of philosophy, psychoanalysis and psychiatry are warmly invited. A more detailed description of the thematic section is attached. Guten Tag! Das Center for Teaching and Learning veranstaltet am Do., 28.09.2023, 10:00-13:00h folgenden Kurs: Geschlechtervielfalt in der Lehre Wie kann ich ihr den ihr gebührenden Raum geben? Trans, inter*, nichtbinär, divers, cis, Pronomenrunde, all gender toilet ... Nicht nur der Staat erkennt Geschlecht mittlerweile als vielfältig an, auch an Universitäten kommt das Thema immer öfter auf. Aber was ist Geschlecht bzw. Geschlechtervielfalt eigentlich? Was bedeuten Begriffe wie trans, cis, nichtbinär etc.? In welchen Geschlechternormen bewege ich mich selber? Wie kann ich trans_inter*nichtbinären Personen in meiner Lehre respektvoll begegnen? Wie kann ich einen möglichst offenen, geschlechtervielfältigen Raum gestalten? In diesem Workshop haben wir 3 Stunden Zeit, uns mit dem Thema Geschlechtervielfalt in der Lehre aus verschiedenen Perspektiven zu beschäftigen: Neben einer Einführung in zentrale Begriffe und Konzepte stehen die Selbstreflexion der eigenen Geschlechterbilder und vor allem konkrete Fragen aus Ihrem Arbeitsalltag im Mittelpunkt. THE GEORG HENRIK VON WRIGHT,LECTURE 2023

Live stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLqQQsCi68E Georg Henrik von Wright acknowledged Eino Kaila and Ludwig Wittgenstein as pivotal to his philosophical growth, reflecting his deep engagement with Austrian philosophy from Mach to the Vienna Circle. His connection with Wittgenstein, both as successor and literary heir, strongly shaped his intellectual path. However, this should not overshadow his individual accomplishments in fields like induction, deontic logic, and ethics. His interactions with Austrian thinkers fit within the framework of “Austrian Philosophy,” which potentially would have led him to study under Viktor Kraft in Vienna instead of Cambridge if not for WWII. In this lecture von Wright’s intellectual journey from pre-war Vienna to the end of the 20th century will be illustrated, involving encounters with the Vienna Circle and the Wittgenstein community in Austria. At the end the question is raised whether Georg Henrik von Wright was a typical analytic philosopher. Professor Friedrich Stadler Friedrich Stadler is retired Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Vienna and is currently Permanent Fellow at the Institute Vienna Circle, which he founded and headed until 2018. He also acts as director of the Vienna Circle Society and as member of the Commission for History and Philosophy of Science at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He is the author of books on Ernst Mach and the Vienna Circle, editor and co-editor of a book series covering Logical Empiricism, history and philosophy of science, analytic philosophy, modern intellectual history and more. He has served as President of the European Philosophy of Science Association and of the Austrian Ludwig Wittgenstein Society.

Call for Papers: HOPOS 2024 at The University of Vienna, July 9-12, 2024 The International Society for the History of Philosophy of Science (HOPOS) will hold its biennial international congress at the University of Vienna, Austria, 9-12 July 2024. The Society hereby requests proposals for papers and symposia to be presented at the meeting. Submission deadline: Sept. 15, 2023. HOPOS is devoted to promoting scholarly research on the history of the philosophy of science. We construe this subject broadly, to include topics in the history of related disciplines and in all historical periods, studied through diverse methodologies. We aim to promote historical work in a variety of ways, but especially through encouraging exchange among scholars through meetings, publications, and electronic media. The program committee particularly encourages submissions on philosophical themes that cross time periods. The conference language is English. The conference will take place directly after "Paul Feyerabend and Austrian Philosophy: His Formative Years in Postwar Vienna," an international conference also to be held at the University of Vienna, July 5-6, 2024. Guidelines for Submissions: HOPOS 2024 accepts two types of submissions: contributed papers and symposia, which are topical collections of 3-4 papers intended to be presented in a single session. Rousseau und die Theokratie

Unser Seminar bildet eine politisch-theologische Diskussion zu Rousseaus Staatstheorie und ihrem historischen Kontext. In seinen beiden Preisschriften – "Abhandlung über die Wissenschaften und Künste / Discours sur les sciences et les arts" (1750) und "Abhandlung über den Ursprung und die Grundlagen der Ungleichheit unter den Menschen / Discours sur l’origine et les fondements de l’inégalité parmi les hommes" (1755) – und in seiner Erziehungsschrift "Emil, oder Über die Erziehung / Émile, ou De l’éducation" (1762) will Rousseau das Leid der Menschheit erklären: Dieses resultiere nicht aus der Natur des Menschen, sondern ‚hausgemacht‘ aus dessen gesellschaftlichen Konstrukten. Rousseaus Anthropologie und Geschichtsphilosophie sind bei dieser Problemschilderung tiefgehend theologisch geprägt, und so verhält es sich auch mit der Schrift, in welcher er die Problemlösung erarbeiten will: "Vom Gesellschaftsvertrag / Du contrat social" (1762). Wie er sich in seinem Argumentieren bereits vorher wiederholt kulturpolitisch auf den Calvinismus seiner Heimatstadt berufen hat, publiziert er auch diese Schrift dezidiert als „Bürger von Genf / Citoyen de Genève“. Seine zentrale Frage dabei ist, von welcher Religion ein Staat beschaffen sein muss, damit er als Gemeinschaft bestehen kann; so lautet das letzte Kapitel „Von der bürgerlichen Religion / De la religion civile“. Rousseaus bürgerliche Religion weist eine immense Wirkungsgeschichte auf: Sie ist maßgebliches Movens des "Kultes der Vernunft / Culte de la Raison" in der Französischen Revolution und prägt entscheidend die deutschsprachige Philosophie um 1800. Als Rousseau nach seinem literarisch so produktiven Jahr 1762 von der katholischen als auch von der reformierten Kirche verfolgt wird, legt er demonstrativ seine Genfer Staatsbürgerschaft nieder. Wir werden den Inhalt von Rousseaus politischen Schriften und deren praktische und theoretische Wirkung unter dem Stichwort ‚Theokratie‘ diskutieren, wobei wir sowohl auf den Calvinismus wie auch auf den Kult der Vernunft der Französischen Revolution eingehen. Begleitet werden wir von Rousseau-Interpretationen, die sich über Staël, Cassirer, Barth, Starobinski, Fetscher bis hin zur aktuellen Forschung erstrecken. Auch thematisieren wir Rousseaus Wirkung auf die Anfänge des Deutschen Idealismus anhand einschlägiger Texte.

[Call for Papers] Ethics and Politics of Imagination: Double Workshop

Mit besten Grüßen Sergej Seitz Call for Papers Ethics and Politics of Imagination Two workshops related to the projects The Limits of Imagination: Animals, Empathy, Anthropomorphism (P35137-G; funded by the FWF) and Prefiguring Democratic Futures: Cultural and Theoretical Responses to the Crisis of Political Imagination (PREDEF 101055015; funded by the ERC) * First workshop session: Oct 13th and 14th 2023, Innsbruck, Austria * Second workshop session: April 12th and 13th 2024, Vienna, Austria Organized by Martin Huth (Department of Philosophy, University of Innsbruck) & Sergej Seitz (Department of Political Science, University of Vienna) The concept of imagination plays a significant, yet sometimes underestimated or concealed role in the history of as well as in current debates in practical philosophy. Ethics problematizes whether or to what extent imagination forms a basis or at least an irreducible part of moral judgments and behavior. For instance, our treatment of people with non-normative embodiment (Garland-Thomson 2017) may depend on our capacity to empathize with them and to imagine their specific way of being in the world. While it is often claimed that this is easily possible, imaginative empathy is a complex phenomenon. An illustrative example is the case of epistemic injustice as analyzed by Fricker (2009). The tacit inability to imagine that, for example, people with cognitive disabilities can be capable knowers forms the basis of systematic exclusion and disrespect. Generally, hegemonic socio-cultural frames of the “deviant” tend to picture their way of being in the world through the lens of privation; hence, comprehension and perceptions are in some respect rooted in politically saturated schemes. This may well lead to paternalism, infantilization, or even dehumanization. With regard to non-human beings, current debates scrutinize whether and to what extent we are capable of imagining what it is like to be a pig, a lizard or a bat. Traditionally, we face widespread skepticism concerning this capability (Nagel 1974), which involves an inability to determine if and to what extent animals suffer in factory farms or during experiments, thus paving the way for the reification of animals. In politics, imagination is considered in its relevance for forming political judgments as well as in regard to how imaginary dispositives stabilize or destabilize the status quo of a given political order. The neoliberal-capitalist hegemony forecloses the very possibility to imagine institutions and political relations substantially different from the status quo. As Margaret Thatcher’s notorious TINA dictum ‘There is No Alternative’ suggests, ‘radical imagination’ (Castoriadis 1975) and a lively political sense of possibility are repressed. Following this line of thought, it seems urgent to rethink the political’s imaginary dimensions both in its stabilizing (ideological) as well as in its possibility-disclosing and subversive capacities. While the latter is classically explicated in terms of utopia, more recent work questions the blueprint character of classical utopias and focuses instead on how political movements enact and experiment with different forms of life and new relationalities. Much-discussed notions in this respect are prefiguration (van de Sande 2023, Sörensen 2023) and pre-enactment (Marchart 2019), pointing to how political imagination is not only a mental-pictorial, but essentially a practical and collective matter. This double workshop proceeds from the conviction that to thoroughly rethink imagination requires bridging and interweaving ethical and political perspectives. From the perspective of ethics, it is indispensable to tackle the problem of politically saturated schemes since they predetermine the possibilities and limits of perceiving, imagining, and comprehending others. In this view, ethics is not restricted to ethical criteria and deliberation, but is mindful of the bodily and pre-reflective prerequisites of ethical responsiveness. Political imaginaries constitute alternative frames of perception and comprehension as well as new versions of inclusion and (multi-species) cohabitation. In turn, from the perspective of politics, it seems indispensable to acknowledge different versions of living in the world as prerequisites for imaginaries that are considerable as meaningful alternatives to the status quo. Against this background, exploring the possibilities and limits of imagination is crucial both for comprehending the ethical aporias as well as the political antagonisms of our times. To this end, the double workshop convenes researchers from all fields of practical philosophy, political theory, sociology, pedagogics, and related disciplines, which tackle the following or further related questions: * How shall we describe the phenomenon of imagination and its ethical and/or political relevance? * What role does imagination play in moral decision making? What role should it play? * To what extent and in what way is imagination pre-determined by hegemonic socio-cultural frames? In other words, how is the relation between imagination and the imaginary to be conceived? * How can we determine the limits of imagination? Can we extend these limits, and if so, how is that possible? * How is imagination related to democracy? Is there such a thing as a specifically democratic imagination? Format The idea behind the double-workshop model is to provide a platform for more long-term exchange between researchers working on ethico-political questions of imagination. Therefore, we expect all participants to attend both events. We strive towards creating a true workshop atmosphere that allows for serious, productive, and collaborative engagement with each other’s work. Talks should be 30 minutes, followed by at least 30 minutes of discussion. The talk at the second workshop can be on the same or a closely related topic but should however reflect the feedback and criticism gathered at the first workshop. Therefore, this double event is particularly fitting for scholars who wish to present current work-in-progress. Venue and Accommodation The workshops will take place in-person at the Universities of Innsbruck (October) and Vienna (April). Online participation is not possible. There is no participation fee. The organizers are happy to give recommendations regarding travel arrangements. In individual cases, assistance with travel expenses may be provided. Publication We plan to publish the workshop’s proceedings as a special issue in a peer-reviewed journal and/or in an edited volume. Call for membership in the Working group against Racism at the Department of Philosophy

Dear All Drawing from best practices at Racism - Critical working group at the department of African Studies, we are planning to found our own working group on the topic of racism, especially in the university context. You can find more information of the group here: https://afrika.univie.ac.at/en/about-us/wg-against-racism/ In line with this, we invite you to join us for a first meeting and discussion organised with UPSalon. The working group highly encourages participation from all levels. This will be a yet informal group of people who care about and are interested in taking up the topic of racism in the university ecosystem. This working group is concerned with the kinds of work, ideas and activities that improves awareness, enhances visibility, initiates discussions and interventions among all levels and practices of the institution. You can look at the website attached for a brief orientation. It is important to re-iterate, that our goal in doing this is to create a working group that shares a relationship of care with the issue of racism and it is not a career-building exercise. This also implies that racism needs to be recognised as an issue that affects us all and yet, those experiencing racism might also be people to keep in mind as central to expertise seeking, intervention making and delegation of authority. The hope is to have something that can be made continuous at the Philosophy department regardless of the presence of specific members. Registration and further information: arantzazu.saratxagaarregi(a)uni-ak.ac.at PHILOSOPHIEN DER KOMPLEXITÄT Die Sommerakademie „Philosophien der Komplexität“ besteht in einem explorativen Reflexionsraum, dessen Ziel es ist, auf die wesentlichen Merkmale der Komplexität tiefgründig einzugehen. Erscheinungen der Komplexität in den sozialen Systemen werden explorativ beobachtet und analysiert zwecks Erlangung eines Verständnisses von angesprochenen Herausforderungen, die zu einer handlungsmächtigen Ethik und einer neuen Organisation des Denkens führen. Komplexität steht heute für die Bezeichnung einer schwer begreifbaren Situation. Sie hat damit zu tun, dass die globalen Ereignisse und Probleme, die sich in einem großen Rahmen (Pandemie, Krieg, ökologische Krise) abspielen, eine unmittelbare Wirkung auf die lokale Ebene ausüben. Sie scheinen unvorhersehbar und unbestimmbar. Große Unvorhersehbarkeiten machen die Entscheidungen schwierig. Vor der Überwältigung durch komplexe Probleme wird eine KI-Maschinerie erstellt, um Lösungen für komplexe Systeme zu finden. Allerdings bleibt die Unkenntnis immer noch eine Frage, die der Komplexität innewohnt und nicht von einem technischen Mittel gelöst werden kann. Insofern hat die Sommerakademie das Ziel, Komplexität nicht nur begreifbar zu machen, sondern die Handlungsfähigkeit aller sozialen Akteur*innen bewusst zu machen und ein agiles Denken zu fördern. Die Komplexität stellt heute die Frage, wie Ordnungen bzw. neue Ordnungen aus der Verflechtung von miteinander interagierenden Elementen hervorgehen. Diese Frage wollen wir in der Sommerakademie behandeln, mit besonderer Aufmerksamkeit auf: Wer trägt die Verantwortung für neue komplexe Ordnungen? Welche Erkenntniswege sind vorhanden und möglich, mit denen soziale Agenten die miteinander verflochtenen Phänomene, die die heutige soziale, ökonomische und ökologische globale Lage bestimmen, bewältigen können? Das Ziel dieses Projekts ist es, über die Epistemologie aktueller, sehr herausfordernder sozialer und wissenschaftlicher Paradigmen der Komplexität zu reflektieren. I. Ökologische Relationalität *PHILOSOPHIES OF COMPLEXITY* The Summer Academy "Philosophies of Complexity" consists of an explorative space of reflection that aims to delve deeply into the essential features of complexity. Phenomena of complexity in social systems will be exploratively observed and analysed in order to gain an understanding of the challenges raised, leading to an actionable ethics and a new organisation of thinking. Complexity is now used to describe a situation that is difficult to understand. It has to do with the fact that global events and large-scale problems (pandemics, wars, ecological crises) have an immediate impact at the local level. They appear unpredictable and unknowable. Unpredictability makes it difficult to make decisions. Before being overwhelmed by complex problems, AI machines are being created to find solutions to complex systems. However, uncertainty remains an inherent problem of complexity and cannot be solved by technical means. In this respect, the Summer Academy aims not only to make complexity comprehensible, but also to make all social actors* aware of their capacity to act and to promote agile thinking. Complexity today raises the question of how orders or new orders emerge from the entanglement of interacting elements. We want to address this question in the Summer Academy, with a particular focus on: Who is responsible for new complex orders? What ways of knowing are available and possible for social actors to manage the entangled phenomena that define today's social, economic and ecological global situation? The aim of this project is to reflect on the epistemology of current, highly challenging social and scientific paradigms of complexity. I. A “global war on women” marks a political shift in patriarchal understanding of power. Women’s killings cannot be considered in private and sexual, but in political categories, with the aim of perpetuating the claims to power of male alliances. Rita Laura Segato is an Argentinian-Brazilian academic who has been called ‘one of Latin America's most celebrated feminist anthropologists’ and ‘one of the most lucid feminist thinkers of this era’. She is known especially for her research on gender in Indigenous villages and Latin American communities, violence against women and the relationships between gender, racism and colonialism. Otto Neurath's democratic planning theory in the context of the climate crisis A cooperation between Institute Vienna Circle (University of Vienna), Vienna Circle Society (Vienna), Chamber of Labor (Vienna), FWF Project Isotype. Origin, development, legacy (P 31500), Wien Museum. Only a few years ago it was hardly imaginable that demands for planned economy measures would be raised and publicly discussed again. Now the time has come. Ulrike Herrmann's book "Das Ende des Kapitalismus. Warum Wachstum und Klimaschutz nicht vereinbar sind – und wie wir in Zukunft leben werden" (2022) is a bestseller. Her central thesis is discussed in numerous public media: The transition from growth-dependent capitalism to a social and ecological circular economy will only be possible through a "private planned economy". What she understands by this has striking similarities with the ideas of economic planning that Otto Neurath conceived even before the First World War and continued to develop until the end of his life in 1945. An important point of reference for Neurath was Josef Popper-Lynkeus. The latter justified the demand for overall social planning with a radically individualistic ethic. Seen from today, this combination is surprising and inspiring - not least because Popper-Lynkeus and Neurath were among the first to introduce ecological viewpoints into economics. A highlight of the conference will be the screening of the film "Land of Promise" (UK 1946). The film was conceived by Neurath as a "film argument" and directed by Paul Rotha. It argues for combating the housing shortage in post-war England with extensively planned housing programme. The arguments put forward in the film bear a remarkable resemblance to the arguments Ulrike Herrmann puts forward today for a "private planned economy" as a transition to a circular economy. Call for Papers Creative Bodies—Creative Minds The third international, interdisciplinary conference in gender research 25-26 March 2024, University of Graz, Austria Organized by: Sociology of Gender section, Department of Sociology, University of Graz, Austria; FH JOANNEUM– University of Applied Sciences Graz; Centre for Southeast European Studies, University of Graz. Theoretical discussions on creativity in the last two decades have addressed existing dichotomies in its conceptualization, such as professional/everyday and public/private. Cultural studies have then been critical of creativity being approached in terms of the individual talent and elite (“creative class”), in economic terms (“creative industries”) or in terms of exclusive locations (“creative city”)[1]. Gender scholars, in the meantime, have levelled criticism at the gendered definition of creativity, too often conceived as a property of a lone male genius, and at the gender bias of research on creativity that had tended to overlook activities in which women typically engaged [2]. Currently, in the European cultural/political space we witness a rise in the use of diverse artistic, creative, and playful tactics and practices in protests and everyday activism which challenge structural inequalities intersecting gender, class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, age and (dis)ability. Such examples of creative expression, including arts, crafts, participatory practices, and/or aesthetic interventions in public space [3], and in feminist and queer politics, in particular (e.g. “craftivism” [4], “artivism”[5]) challenge the common understanding of what constitutes political, as well as creative activities. Likewise, studies on socially engaged art in Southeastern Europe that have conceptualized “creative work […] as a labor of care and compassion” [6] make us think beyond the ideas of creativity in terms of individual self-expression. The third Creative Bodies—Creative Minds Conference 2024 will explore the gendered and political aspects of current, historical or everyday creative practices. DIY-making, as a form of everyday creativity, carries a different meaning in different political regimes (such as in the former Eastern Bloc, liberal market democracies, or post-colonial context). Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns exemplify how everyday creative practice is/was an adaptive response to external circumstances. We witnessed how digital media enabled sharing of creative responses to the constraints, including the use of humor (“from zines to memes”) to cope with the situation, express care and solidarity, and maintain relationships. We are interested in exploring creative adaptations to external circumstances across different political, economic and gender regimes. Keynote speakers: Věra Sokolová, Department of History, Charles University, Prague Milica Tomić, Institute for Contemporary Art, Graz University of Technology The areas of interest for the CBCM 2024 conference include, but are not limited to: * creativity and intersectional activism; * arts, crafts, play as activist and political tools; * reparative cultural and political practices; * creative living as an adaptation to different biopolitical regulations; * (everyday) creativity across different political, economic and gender regimes; * creative labor (precarity, rethinking work/productivity, collective organizing); * creative, playful, fun and politicized use of space and time (e.g. festivals, parks and clubs); * intersectional activism and digital media; * humor, playfulness and fun in feminist and LGBTQ+ activism; * creativity as care for others, collective and solidary creativity; * DIY, maker movement: from knitting, through home-making to open source; * material, processual and relational aspects of creative practices; * the place of creative methodologies and creative research in teaching and scholarly research in social sciences and humanities. We are inviting proposals for presentations from scholars, practitioners and postgraduate students from a wide range of disciplines including, but not limited to: sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, human geography, political science, gender studies, art, performance, history, literary studies, social studies of science and technology and environmental studies. APSE Talk by Peter Vickers on June 1st

Title: The Institute of Ascertaining Scientific Consensus, or, How to Measure Scientific Community Opinion and Influence People When/Where: Thursday, June 1^st , 3-5pm, HS 2H, NIG Abstract: A solid, international scientific consensus is the best signal humanity ever gets that a specific scientific statement articulates an “established scientific fact”. It is thus surprising that there currently exists no good way to measure the strength of scientific consensus regarding a specific statement of interest. Indeed, scientists themselves don’t know when a claim can be called a ‘fact’ (as Ernst Mayr used to complain, and as one IPCC author recently complained). A good method for quickly, efficiently assessing mass scientific opinion is urgently needed, especially given the rise in ‘fake news’ and misleading information in the public sphere. Perhaps most significantly of all, recent studies have demonstrated the power of expert-community consensus information to correct misconceptions of laypersons, and, crucially, impact upon relevant choices and actions of those laypersons (such as getting vaccinated against COVID-19). The Institute for Ascertaining Scientific Consensus (IASC) seeks to become humanity’s premier means for measuring scientific community opinion on a given statement of interest. In June 2023 it conducts its first mass survey, targeting 20,000 scientists across 30 different academic institutions. Best wishes, Franziska Reinhard (on behalf of the APSE unit)

Abstract: What makes pain problematic? The nature of pain is contested, and over the 20th century, researchers from biomedical fields as diverse as surgery, anesthesiology, physiology, and neurology have sought to develop a unified theory to represent its causes and effects. In the clinic, the status of pain is subjective. Over the last century, many efforts have been made to raise awareness of the under-examined aspects of pain and to objectify it through the standardization of its measurement. There remains, however, a gap between the knowledge of and intervention on pain that has troubled the evidence-based medicine paradigm. In this presentation I explain the nature of this gap as a result of particular discursive and institutional relations. In particular, I focus on the rise of clinical pain measurement scales alongside the professionalization of the subspecialty of pain medicine. Drawing on material from a broader genealogical project on the biomedical sciences of pain, I argue that the techniques of pain management were developed in relation to a particular shift in the notion of clinical judgment within the medical discourse. I will situate this knowledge development within the broader societal and institutional events that rendered pain problematic, focusing on the establishment of the first pain clinic in the USA and the International Society for the Study of Pain. Call for Participation - InterGender Course ""Learning to Read Differently" - October 2023

Dear all, together with several people all over the university and Manu Sharma from our own institute, I am organizing an InterGender – International Consortium for Interdisciplinary Feminist Research Training course for PhD and late stage MA students, which will happen in October and is entitled "Learning to Read Differently". You can even get 7,5 or 10 ECTS credits for it! Here's a short description: Much academic work relies on existing texts and their interpretation. As scholars, we necessarily build on these knowledges transmitted to us by others in order to try to better understand power relations and their modes of action, to form our own arguments based on the texts, to make sense of certain social phenomena and to contribute to thinking_feeling about the world. All too often, this process of reading becomes so normalized that we hardly think about the consequences and premises of these practices of reading themselves. Therefore, we want to dedicate this PhD and MA course to the goal of “Learning to Read Differently”. Throughout the course, we will engage not only with how we read “texts” as they are commonly understood, but also with how we interpret the fabric of reality and the situations and phenomena we encounter in our research and beyond. Together, we want to explore what we choose to read or not to read, as well as the political implications that arise from these practices. Thus, the course aims to support participants in exercising reading practices and research methods that enable them to critically reflect upon the “standard” practices usually governed by white euro-anglo-centric academia, to challenge them, and to try out different approaches. WORKSHOP INVITATION Pragmatic-Academic Event (VDP and UPsalon): "Combatting Gendered Exclusions - Good Practices for Philosophers"

The workshop will be facilitated by Stephanie Deig (University of Lucerne). We especially invite people with extensive teaching experience to share their perspectives and experiences on gendered exclusions and bystanding in academic settings. Brief workshop description: “The field of academic philosophy has a serious problem with the under-representation of women as well as persons who do not identify with the gender assigned to them at birth. This is due to structural forms of gendered marginalization and exclusion that create unsafe and harmful environments. In the first part of this workshop, participants will be introduced to how specific mechanisms, such as implicit bias, stereotype threat, as well as sexual and moral harassment manifest within philosophical settings: working, teaching, and learning, and how transforming certain conditions and practices could help combat them. In the second half of the workshop, participants will be given a theoretical introduction to bystander interventions and be encouraged (but not required) and given space to share their own experiences relevant to these questions to create awareness and discuss potential strategies that could be enacted locally. We will conclude by using these experiences as a basis for discussion about how bystanders can safely and productively intervene in instances of gendered wrongdoings. Even though the workshop focuses on gender-based exclusions, the convener seeks to create a space for discussing marginalization from an intersectional perspective." Otto Neurath's democratic planning theory in the context of the climate crisis A cooperation between Institute Vienna Circle (University of Vienna), Vienna Circle Society (Vienna), Chamber of Labor (Vienna), FWF Project Isotype. Origin, development, legacy (P 31500), Wien Museum. Only a few years ago it was hardly imaginable that demands for planned economy measures would be raised and publicly discussed again. Now the time has come. Ulrike Herrmann's book "Das Ende des Kapitalismus. Warum Wachstum und Klimaschutz nicht vereinbar sind – und wie wir in Zukunft leben werden" (2022) is a bestseller. Her central thesis is discussed in numerous public media: The transition from growth-dependent capitalism to a social and ecological circular economy will only be possible through a "private planned economy". What she understands by this has striking similarities with the ideas of economic planning that Otto Neurath conceived even before the First World War and continued to develop until the end of his life in 1945. An important point of reference for Neurath was Josef Popper-Lynkeus. The latter justified the demand for overall social planning with a radically individualistic ethic. Seen from today, this combination is surprising and inspiring - not least because Popper-Lynkeus and Neurath were among the first to introduce ecological viewpoints into economics. A highlight of the conference will be the screening of the film "Land of Promise" (UK 1946). The film was conceived by Neurath as a "film argument" and directed by Paul Rotha. It argues for combating the housing shortage in post-war England with extensively planned housing programme. The arguments put forward in the film bear a remarkable resemblance to the arguments Ulrike Herrmann puts forward today for a "private planned economy" as a transition to a circular economy. Nach dem Film sprechen Nikita Dhawan, Persson Perry Baumgartinger und Katharina Mückstein über Feminismus, Rassismus, Diskriminierung und auch über die Vermittlung dieser Themen sowie ihre Forschungsgebiete. Oktober 2021 Inhaberin der Professur für Politikwissenschaft mit Schwerpunkt Politische Theorie und Ideengeschichte an der TU Dresden. ÖAW: Hermann Cohens Persönlichkeit, 05.05.2023, 17.30Uhr

Hermann Cohen (1842-1918) war ein leidenschaftlicher Philosoph. Seine Leitfiguren waren Platon und Kant, Bachja Ibn Pakuda und Maimonides. Er war transzendentaler Idealist, Sozialist und als Jude ein am Gebetbuch orientierter Reformdenker. Seine intellektuelle und rhetorische Brillianz, seine Liebe zur Sache und der tiefe Ernst waren unangefochten, auch seitens derer, die ihm widersprachen. Cohen lehrte ab 1873 an der Universität Marburg, zuletzt an der jüdischen "Lehranstalt" in Berlin. Er hinterließ ein umfangreiches Werk, darunter ein mehrteiliges System der Philosophie und epochemachende Entwürfe jüdischer Theologie. Der Vortrag wagt eine Skizze dieser eindrucksvollen Persönlichkeit. Dr. phil. habil. Hartwig Wiedebach habilitierte sich an der Universität Kassel. Er lehrte bis 2019 Philosophie an der ETH Zürich, leitete das Hermann Cohen Archiv und ist Mitherausgeber der Werke Cohens. Vorher 12 Jahre Tätigkeit in der Sozialpsychiatrie. Abstract: Australia presents a complex example of a locale where there is increasing awareness about the moral and legal requirements associated with benefit sharing and acknowledgment of traditional knowledge, particularly Indigenous knowledge sources. After a brief overview on the history and current status of Indigenous communities in Australia, we present a series of vignettes associated with marine research in South Australia where different types of engagement or collaborations have occurred between academic and governmental researchers and local Indigenous communities. We use these vignettes to problematise typical Western scientific methods of giving credit and including local and traditional knowledges as part of knowledge production methods in scientific research, and explore a broader range of options such as diverse forms of benefit sharing that in turn can support a more robust vision of what is epistemically and morally relevant in these domains. Workshop: FUnding a PhD & Planning your Application

Dear all, The Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy and the Vienna Forum for Analytic Philosophy are organizing a workshop on the topic of Graduate Applications and Funding Opportunities for Early Career Philosophers *this Thursday, **April 20*. The workshop will be structured in two sessions: *§1 FUNDING A PHD* The DLE Research Services and Career Development will present national and international funding opportunities for early career researchers (PhD students, postdocs and transition phase). Among others, programs of funding agencies such as FWF and the European Commission will be presented and you will have the opportunity to ask questions to the Research Services team. *When?* April 20, 2023 – 15.00 – 16.30 *Where?* Room 3C, NIG, Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Vienna *break with snacks*: 16.30 – 17.00 *§2 PLANNING YOUR APPLICATION* Our panel of Forum Alumni will provide participants with suggestions on how to create an ideal timeline for applying to PhD programs and related funding.
