Lecture Series Winter semester 2022/2023
*Encountering Madness. Intercultural and Decolonial Approaches to the
Phenomenon of Mental Illness*
Organization: Cristina Chitu, Manu Sharma & Murat Ates
A cooperation between WIGIP, IWK and the Department of Philosophy
Lecture 11.11.2022, 6:30 pm, Location: Institut für Wissenschaft und
Kunst (Berggasse 17, 1090 Vienna)
*Mitha Karim (Edinburgh): Mental Health and Muslim Communities *
Abstract: Within any culture, there are paradigmatic views of personal
and communal experiences and understanding of social and natural
phenomena. This includes frameworks of understanding what is viewed as
“mental illness”. Whilst a sociopsychobio framework is largely the model
used to address mental health and illness amongst allopathic
practitioners, it is important to recognise that the lived experience
and therefore the understanding of experiences by individuals is
influenced by cultural frameworks. In relation to Muslims,
conceptualisations of mental health and illness is often viewed and
discussed in the literature in terms of “cultural formulations”, with an
almost Other-ed approach in viewing traditional and spirito-cultural
models of understanding mental health. That said, this approach neglects
recognition of the diaspora of Muslim communities, that faith is
practised across various cultural milieus and the therefore reductive
nature of a monolithic approach, and that social and contextual factors
can influence discourse on mental health. This talk discusses
contemporary approaches and debates pertaining to “Muslim mental health”
– noting common models of understanding of psychopathology, various
frameworks and coping strategies, and problematises current approaches
and whether they are adept/fit for Muslim communities. It also considers
current movements to “decolonise” mental health from the Muslim
framework, addressing intra-community debates pertaining to Muslim
mental health, as well as problematising current approaches to
addressing mental health needs amongst Muslim migrant communities.

Sonja Fiala

*Pursuing MPhil/PhD studies in **Philosophy**at Lingnan University**,
2023-24 Intake***
I would like to bring to your attention a very attractive PhD programme
that the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong has established,
i.e. /Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)/, and it would be great if
you could kindly help to share this information with your students and
graduates who may be interested. The Scheme is aimed at attracting the
best and brightest students from around the world to come for PhD
studies in Hong Kong, and I very much hope to have one of yours pursuing
this degree with us at Lingnan. Each Fellowship awardee will be provided
with an annual stipend of HK$325,200* (approximately US$41,690) and a
conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$13,600*
(approximately US$1,740) per year by the RGC. In addition, awardees’
full tuition fee for the first year of study will be waived by the
University. The intention is to make this Scheme prestigious and highly
international, hence hopefully attractive to you and your
students/graduates.
Lingnan, a global leader in quality education and high impact research,
is Hong Kong’s liberal arts university, whose relatively smaller size,
top international faculty and strong emphasis on close staff and student
relationships offer a unique environment for the pursuit of advanced
studies in this vibrant and energetic city. It ranks 3^rd for “Quality
Education” for two consecutive years in /THE University Impact Rankings/
2021 and 2022. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise 2020 conducted
by the University Grants Committee, Lingnan’s research in humanities,
business and social sciences was classified as “World Leading” (4 star)
and “Internationally Excellent” (3 star); while some research
disciplines under business and social sciences also came 1^st or 2^nd
among all public universities in Hong Kong in terms of the percentage of
“World Leading” research work. The University offers MPhil and/or PhD
programmes in the Arts, Business, Science and Social Sciences
disciplines. Our top value is student-centred learning, which ensures
close and supportive thesis supervision. At Lingnan, students establish
peer-type working relationships with world-class scholars who offer
expert and close-contact supervision in their respective areas. Our
compact working environment where research students relate as peers with
world-class scholars has enabled Lingnan to maintain an excellent track
record in the HKPFS.
To offer more diversified learning opportunities, especially for
interdisciplinary research studies, Lingnan has been offering a number
of full-time PhD programmes in collaboration with Mainland universities
since the 2021-22 academic year. More collaborative programmes with
Mainland/overseas universities are currently in the pipeline. For
further details, please visit our website at
www.LN.edu.hk/rpg/admission/list-of-programmes
<http://www.LN.edu.hk/rpg/admission/list-of-programmes>.
The Department of Philosophy at Lingnan currently has 17 faculty
members. Their expertise covers all of the main areas in philosophy,
including aesthetics, epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, history of
Chinese philosophy, logic, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of
science. The work of Lingnan philosophers has been published by leading
publishers (e.g. Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press)
and in top journals//(e.g./British Journal for the Philosophy of
Science/,/Ethics/, /Mind/,/Noûs, Philosophical Quarterly, Philosophical
Studies, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research/,//and/Philosophy of
Science/). Further information on our current staff list and interests
can be found at www.LN.edu.hk/philoso/?page_id=9
<http://www.LN.edu.hk/philoso/?page_id=9>.
Given the breadth and high quality of research done by Lingnan
philosophers, the Department is one of the best places in Asia for
undertaking doctoral studies in philosophy, especially in analytic
philosophy. The department is a place of lively philosophical exchanges
in our regular staff seminars and even more in informal and frequent
discussions.
Applicants may seek admission to our PhD programmes in two ways as follows:
·Outstanding applicants may seek admission via the HKPFS *by 1 December
2022 (Hong Kong Time 12:00 noon)*. Fellowship awardees will be provided
with a Fellowship with a monthly stipend of HK$27,100*, and will be

Hello!
My name is Martin and I’m currently the chair of the Vienna Forum for
Analytic Philosophy <http://wfap.philo.at/>. We are a student-led
organization that meets once a week to discuss philosophy papers on a
topic that we decide on once a year. At the end of the academic year, we
also organize a graduate conference
<http://wfap.philo.at/index.php/conferences/11th-wfap-graduate-conference/> on
that topic.
This year’s topic is *“Attention and Salience”* and we will meet for the
second time this year on *Friday, October 28 at 18:30 in 3F (3rd floor)
at the NIG (Universitätsstraße 7, 1010 Wien)*. The time and location
will stay the same throughout the academic year. Subscribe to this
mailing list <https://lists.univie.ac.at/mailman/listinfo/forum>to get
the papers we are reading every week. This week’s text will be attached
to this e-mail.
So if you want to hang out with friendly people and discuss some
philosophy of mind and action, please stop by and say hello! It’s really
no problem if you don’t have any prior knowledge on the topic – we don’t
either, that’s the whole point! It’s also no problem if you haven’t read
the text, we’ll go through it anyways! So really, no need to worry. Just
show up and say hello!
Looking forward to seeing you!
Martin

Dear Colleagues,
With the start of the new semester, we would like to recommence our
DocWIP Series and are now open to new submissions for talks!
The doctoral work in progress seminar (DocWIP) is a regular event run by
the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy (VDP), co-organized by Flora
Löffelmann and Jackson Sawatzky. DocWIP provides an informal space for
doctoral researchers to present ideas, receive comments, and socialize
with their peers. It is designed to help build a close-knit doctoral
community, in which researchers can benefit from each others' knowledge,
support, and constructive criticism. Meetings typically take place on
Wednesday afternoons, once a month, in Neues Institutsgebäude (NIG). For
meeting links, email updates, or requests to take part, please contact
Flora Löffelmann (flora.loeffelmann(a)univie.ac.at) or Jackson Sawatzky
(jackson.sawatzky(a)univie.ac.at). Presentations can be given in either
English or German.
The projected dates for this semester are the 2nd of November, 30th of
November, 11th of January, and 1st of February. Unless requested
otherwise, the time will be 16:45 - 18:45. This will allow a maximum of
30-45 minutes for a presentation, a short break, and then time for a Q
and A. Students preparing for their faculty presentation (FÖP) are also
encouraged to present, as are masters students who wish to give a talk
on their thesis or receive feedback on ideas for future doctoral research.
We strongly encourage interlocutors and presenters from all areas of
philosophy, and especially from underrepresented groups, to (regularly)
attend these sessions.
If you like to present at the DocWIP, we kindly request that you contact
us with your preferred dates. Nearer to the time of your presentation,
we would also request that you send a title and abstract, in order that
we can forward information about your talk to our community.
We look forward to hearing from you all!
